Focus skill(s)/knowledge: Reading, Listening Initial Situation The pupils dont know me. They are pretty good at English and they are used to discussing literature in class. They have recently done Geoffrey Chaucer and will also be doing some William Shakespeare. Because their teacher did some older literature, I decided to tackle something a little bit more recent. Outline of lesson
Time Needed 3 8 1 Lesson Objective Numbers Introduction Part of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas The teacher asks the pupils to make name tags for themselves. The teacher introduces himself. A snippet from the 1998 movie. From 44:30 to 50:00. Pupils are asked to find out what the movie is about. They are not told up front. Its a film about a journalist and his friend taking a trip to Las Vegas for a series of psychedelic escapades. Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro. Have the pupils heard the song that Johnny Depp plays on the portable radio, the song Benicio del Toro wants to hear? Have they heard what the song is about? Probably not. Were zooming in on this song: Pupils are handed out a paper with the lyrics to the song. Some words are left out. Pupils are asked to fill in the blanks. Its a song by the band Jefferson Airplane. When do pupils think this song was made? What kind of people are singing it? Which cultural subgroup? (Hippies) What is the song about? (drugs) How do we know this? Does the song remind you of something else? A book or movie? (Alice in Wonderland) Do the pupils see a connection between Alice in Wonderland story and drugs? What are some drugs the pupils know? They can just shout out some names, they are put on the blackboard: alcohol, marihuana, nicotine, speed, crack, xtc, LSD, heroine. Pupils get a handout with excerpts from Alice in Wonderland. They are asked to read the fragments and they should try to match the fragments to certain drugs that these fragments refer to. Topic Method Materials
