The reality is that Middle Way could not serve the more than 2,000 clients annually who turn to the agency for assistance without the volunteers. Without them crisis line calls would go unanswered, children would not have the benefit of individual tutors after school, abused women would have to navigate the court system alone. Each day volunteers walk in and out of the emergency shelter and the transitional housing facility, and each of them has an impact. By the end of that September day, we could look forward to the contributions of 64 new volunteers who were ready to embark on the adventure of working at Middle Way House. Some of these individuals will volunteer for a semester and some may stay for many years. Some may volunteer with children, and some may volunteer to do office work. Regardless of the length of time they volunteer or the position they take, all 64 will be appreciated as they begin to participate in one of their most important contributions to the community, volunteering. - Debra Morrow Community Programs Coordinator

Building Challenge Update

Public Radio Fund Drive

Our transformation from a historic Coca-Cola Bottling Co. plant to an eco-friendly domestic violence shelter continues. Pictured above is our rooftop garden. Produce grown there is available to all Middle Way House residents. WFIUs Fund Drive is coming up. One of the options for donors is a broadcast day of dedication. Please consider writing a dedication for Middle Way House now in its 40th year of providing life-saving services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Thanks to our wonderful supporters and the good folks at Weddle Bros., the lien on the New Wings property has been allowed to lapse. We will continue to raise funds to pay Weddle and to meet our obligations relative to the larger mortgage.

Mark Your Calendars for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

This October, Middle Ways participation in Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2011 means bringing the most underreported crime in the nation to the communitys attention. Each year, we try to improve our local outreach, and this year is no exception. Were especially excited about Voices Against Violence, celebrating Middle Ways 40 years of service to the community. Two concerts will feature popular local talent, some with international reputations, at the historic Buskirk-Chumley Theater. Between the performances, there will be free music and belly dancing by Dark Side Tribal and a silent auction. Proceeds from the concert and auction will help our organization continue to offer services to survivors of domestic violence. So come out and help us silence the voices of violence with inspiring, hopeful songs.
