CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background Of The Study Language is a tool of comunication. English has become an international language for along time. It means, English has been used by humans across culture and nationality to share informations and knowledge. That is way English become an important language to master. Today many students learn English around the world. Part of them learn it as their first language, part of them learn it as their seconds and part of them learn it as their foreign language. Based on that fact there is ESL and EFL. ESL is English as a second language, learned by unnative students in native social environments so the students can use English to survival in their daily comunication. EFL is English as a foreign language, learned by unnative students in unnative social environmet so the students doesnt practice it to use the language in their daily life. (Paul :2003) of course both of them have different of difficulties. In Indonesia, students learn English in EFL formally class since elementary school somewhere since kindergarten to senior highschool. At least Indonesian student has been studying English for not less from 12 years when they come to the college. The students are expected to mastery three first of four levels of literation: Performative, functional, informational and epistemic in the end of senior high school level.

In the performative level students are expected to be able to read, write, listen, and
speak.

In the functional level students are expected to be able to use English in daily activities such as read news paper, manual book or direction.

In formational level students are expected to be able to accesing knowledge using


their language ability, and in the epistemic level the students are able to expressing their knowledge in the language. (Wells, 1987).

Baiquni MA said that language of a person will show his mind and character so important to learn the rules of a language.When someone take a conversation with the other, or share his idea written in grammatically correct of a language it can show the persons good education, show the persons respect to the others and then gain the respect from the other too. It can be a good communication because all the idea can be delivered clearly without any missunderstanding. In the other hand the insufficiency of mastering grammar can rise the opposite effects. Learning English is like learning another language, it is a complex process. In learning any languages we need and always need good memorizing, work hard, or repeat and rational intelligence. ( Dr. Astini Suud, 1990: 40 ). Learning a language oblige the student to memorizing many things such as vocabularies and the rules and then practising. The rule of English also called grammar alone has many parts of discussions, one of them is Gerund. The simple definition which most student give to gerund is V 1 + ing form use as a noun, but the uses of it in a sentence has some details rules. Many rules of English grammar some time take the students in a confusing. In the town around the school of SMA N 1 BANDAR such as Pekalongan and Batang district there are many English courses that can help the students to solve their dificulties of English. Of course there are many students of that town learn English in the courses after their time school is finish. But SMA N 1 Bandar is placed in a rural district, only small part of its students who get in English courses out of school. Based on the fact the researcher chose the school to take a valid result of experiment study which the title is THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CHAINDRILL TO STUDENTS ABILITY IN WRITING SKILL OF SENTENCE USING GERUND AT SMAN 1 BANDAR YEAR 2012/2013

B. Identification of the problem From the background of the study above the writer would like to identified the problem as follow : 1. Is the emplementation of chaindrill effective for developing students ability in writing skill of sentence using gerund?

A. Limitation of the study Based on the identification of problem above, it will need so much time and so much energy to do if the research is held in all class of that school.A problem limitation is determining the scope of the problem that is identified and suitable with the aim. ( Suharjono, 1997:24). So the study will be limited focus on The effectiveness of chaindrill to studenst ability in writing skill of sentence using gerung in SMA N 1 Bandar grade II academic year 2012/2013 B. Formulation of the problem Problem formulation is constructed based on the background of the study. It is question that will answer by finishing the research and construct its conclusion. So based on the explanation above the problem will be : Is the emplementation of chaindrill effective for developing students ability in writing skill of sentence using gerund in SMA N 1 Bandar grade II academic year 2012/2013? C. Objective of the study Based on the formulation of the study above, its objective is to know the the effectiveness of chaindrill to studenst ability in writing skill of sentence using gerung in SMA N 1 Bandar grade II academic year 2012/2013 D. Significance of the study At least there is three implications that reseacher wish by do the research : 1. For the reseacher, to know the effectiveness of chaindrill to studenst ability in writing skill of sentence using gerung and their problem about it that can be base of further study to be a creative teacher in the future. 2. For the students who will be the subjects, the reseach can be a new experience of studying English in unnusual learning form that can increase their motivation. 3. For the school of the subjects, the result of the reseach can be motivation to the teachers to improve their method of teaching so that they can help the students to increase their ability of English.

E. Definition of the term

To giving limitation of the study and avoid missunderstanding of the terms in the study , the reseacer find that the definition of the term is necessary. 1. Chaindrill is a kind of teaching technique ussually use to help the students to memorize vocabularies that is formed as speaking game. 2. Gerund is V 1 + ing form that use as noun with few rules to use it in sentences. 3. The students, is the subject of research , the third grade of SMA N 1 Bandar. 4. SMA N I Bandar is one of state schools in Batang district area located at Jl. BladoBandar KM 03 that will be the location of the research.
