Q.2]

Answer the following: Distinguish between Youngs Modulus, Bulk modulus and Modulus of Rigidity. Explain Poissons Ratio. Discuss its limiting values. Explain an expression for the modulus. State SI unit and dimensions of K. Show that strain energy per unit volume of a strained wire is (stress) (strain).

12 M

Answer the following: [Any Two] 6M Find the maximum load which may be placed on a tungsten wire of diameter 2 mm so that permitted strain must not exceed 1/1000. [Ytungsten = 35 1010 N/m2] Calculate the strain energy per unit volume in a brass wire of length 2.0 m and cross sectional area 0.5 mm2. When it is stretched by 2 mm and a force of 5 kg.wt is applied to its free end. A mass of 2 kg is hung from a steel wire of radius 0.5 mm and length 3 m. Compute the extension produced. What should be the minimum radius of wire so that elastic limit is not exceeded? [Elastic limit of steel = 2.4 108 N/m2 , Ysteel = 20 1010 N/m2] 4M
