ice has changed more in fifty years than it did over the past two centuries: its history advances, but its past remains.
n arriving by plane at the legendary airport of Nice-Cte dAzur, built on land reclaimed from the sea, where the worlds greatest stars have sparked thousands of flash-bulbs from pressmens cameras, you have a clearer view of the towns unique position, nestling amidst its hills, tucked into the unrivalled setting of the Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels). oure surprised to discover the flower-filled gardens of the Colline du Chteau (Castle Hill) and Place Massna, the majestic architecture of the grand hotels and the Promenade des Anglais. Nice bids you welcome, both elegant and friendly, lively and cheerful, proud of its long history of independence. You were probably thinking about its gentle climate and beautiful sights, - and you werent mistaken ! But this is a town that will also astonish you for its personality and dynamism, its liveliness by day and by night, its passion for art and culture. Did you know, for instance, that after Paris, this is the city that boasts the highest number of museums in France ? ice offers a thousand delights and surprises for all those who really get to know it : from the Sardinian neighbourhoods around the port to the Victorian avenues of Cimiez, from the breath-taking panorama at the top of Mont-Boron to the narrow, picturesque streets of the Old Town, from the footpaths that link up the hills, to casual strolls around de-luxe boutiques in the towns pedestrian areas.
his practical guide, produced by Nices Convention and Visitors Bureau, hopes to help you along the road to discovery and see that you get to know the city better... a city that offers such a wide range of attractions.

A SHORT
ISTORY
That situation continued until 1860, with two interruptions: from 1691 to 1731, when the County of Nice belonged to Louis XIV, and from 1792 to 1814, when it became part of the French Republic, then of the Empire, becoming for the very first time the Dpartement des Alpes-Maritimes. In 1860, the citys population enthusiastically welcomed the Treaty of Turin, signed by Napoleon III and King Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia, which stipulated that Nice would again become part of France.

rehistoric man already had the right idea! He found the perfect place to set up camp: the site known as Terra Amata, at the foot of Mont-Boron.
00.000 years later, its still attracting visitors ! Towards the 4th century B.C., the Greeks arrived by sea and settled on the Colline du Chteau, intending to make Nikaa a strategic trading THERMAL SPA OF THE ROMAN TOWN OF CEMENELUM centre... Twenty-four centuries later, trading is still topical! hen, just 100 years B.C., the Romans brought their stones here not just any old stones, either : they built a complete town on the hill of Cimiez (Cemenelum) with all they needed for the baths and entertainment (arenas, spas, shops...).
The towns expansion roused a lot of envy: over the next six centuries, Barbarian and Saracen invasions reduced this fine commu-nity to almost nothing. he Counts of Provence then took over the site first created by the Greeks. In the 14th century, the people of Nice grew tired of the continual political squabbling, and asked to be placed under the sovereignty of the House of Savoy.

rom then on, the little township was STATUE OF GARIBALDI, THE ITALIAN launched on the road to rapid REVOLUTIONARY AND NICES HERO development. It became a fashionable holiday centre, admirably served by the brand new railway. Today, Nice is the fifth largest town in France with a population of 400.000; the commune has opened wide its doors, not only to art and culture, but also to industry, science and high technology.
THE OLD CASINO-JETE IN THE BAIE DES ANGES
hanks to ambitious projects such as Acropolis, Palais des Congrs et des Expositions, an international airport ranking second after Paris, and an unequalled hotel structure, the city of Nice now enjoys the enviable reputation of being the international capital of tourism.

Nice benefits from an exceptional micro-climate which has contributed to its worldwide renown for almost 200 years. A town that faces the sea, it is protected from the wind, first by its hills and second by the Estrel mountains to the west, and the north-western barrier comprised of the Mercantour Alps. Thanks to sea breezes, the climate is always mild in winter and never too hot in summer. This is why one can often have lunch in a T-shirt in the middle of February on the restaurant terraces of the Cours Saleya, while the rest of France is shivering in the cold ! On the other hand, dont forget your sweater if youre going to the open-air jazz evenings in the month of July in the Arnes de Cimiez.

Terra Amata to the architectural follies of the Belle Epoque, Nice has preserved numerous traces of its eventful past. The Old Town contains a treasure-trove of baroque art from the 17th and 18th centuries. Visit the Palais Lascaris and the many churches and chapels dotted around the narrow streets, but take your time, while enjoying a pleasant stroll. At the limits of the older neighbourhoods, you can also admire some fascinating buildings typical of 19th-century architecture : the Palais de la Prfecture, Palais de Justice, Opera House...

CHAPELLE DE LA MISRICORDE
(Cours Saleya)
hile wandering about the Old Town of Nice, take a look at the pointed arches above some of the shops, dating back to medieval times. They have been carefully restored, especially in Rue du Pont-Vieux and Rue de la Prfecture. You can also see many examples of stone lintels on the faades of private houses.
The first stone was laid in 1740, and the chapel was given over to the Brotherhood of Black Penitents. Magnificent architecture, both inside and out, devoted to the baroque style, a lovely golden colour and a distinct preference for curved lines.
Adam and Eves House, a striking example of decorated houses that brightened up the Old Town of Nice. Bas-reliefs executed in cameo tones in 1584 adorn the faade.
PALAIS DE JUSTICE
(Place du Palais)
EGLISE SAINT-GIAUME
(1 Rue de la Poissonnerie)
Law Courts built in neo-classical style at the end of 19 th century. The Courthouse annex occupies Caserne Rusca, former barracks across the square. A very lovely pedestrian square lies between the two buildings.
Generally known as the Church of Sainte Rita, patron saint of hopeless causes, it was rebuilt in the 17th century and dedicated to Saint-Jacques (Saint-Giaume in Niois dialect).
Formerly the Palais Royal, built at the beginning of the 17th century to accommodate the Governors and Dukes of Savoy when they came to stay in Nice. After Nice was reunified with the rest of France in 1860, the building became the headquarters of the Prfecture des Alpes Maritimes. Since the inauguration of the new administrative centre to the west of Nice, it has been home to the President of the General Council and the Prefect of the AlpesMaritimes. At N 18, rue de la Prfecture, there is a very fine house dating back to the 16th century.
In 1614, the Senate was the equivalent of todays Courts of Appeal. Religious services were performed in the adjoining Holy Shroud Chapel (chapelle du Saint Suaire) which belonged to the Red Penitents, and where the senators reserved galleries for their own private use.
LES PONCHETTES
Situated between the Cours Saleya and the sea, this row of buildings features two vaulted 19th-C. rooms which have been converted into art galleries by the Municipality of Nice.
Todays Opera House was built on the site of the former municipal theatre, destroyed by fire in 1881. Inaugurated in 1885, it is a typical example of Belle-poque architecture.
COURS SALEYA
Every morning (except Mondays, which are reserved for antique dealers), youll find the fruit and vegetable market and, throughout the day, the famous flower market. The numerous restaurants and boutiques add an extra touch of liveliness.

HTEL DE VILLE
(5 Rue de l'Htel de Ville)
Built in 1730, this building was successively used as a diocesan seminary, hospital and barracks. Since 1860, it has played host to the Town Hall.
The nort-east corner of this square dates back to the 16th century. In the 19th century, it was the terminus for the courrieras (stage-coaches). It still bustles with activity, and a raucous morning fish market (except Mondays).
PLACE SAINT-FRANOIS
MAIRIE ANNEXE
(Rue de la Terrasse)
In this building dating back to 1730, one can admire a very fine interior staircase decorated with elegant stucco. The Town of Nice acquired the building and it is used today by various municipal departments.

LE JARDIN DES ARNES DE CIMIEZ
Nices oldest garden comprises, together with the Esplanade du Paillon, Square Leclerc and Promenade du Paillon, an oasis of greenery stretching over 2 km from the seafront towards the hills. In the 6th century B.C., the gardens of Babylon were a source of delight for King Nebuchadnezzar ! In Nice, the idea was taken up in the Corvsy and Place Mozart Gardens and in the 12,300 m2 of the Promenade du Paillon. At the bottom bloom azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons, higher up there are parasol pines and Phoenix palms overhanging Mexican, tropical and Asiatic gardens.
The backdrop for many of Nices traditional ftes. Its a pleasant experience to hear the fifes and drums in the middle of this lovely olive-grove.
Fountains mingle with the play of light in this restful and flowery esplanade between the Old Town and the centre. A magnificent perspective : a forum, a central pond of 1,500 m2 and a gently undulating area to the east comprise the main features.
With 142 acres planted with Aleppo pines in 1866, 11 km. of marked pathways, its rare species of flowers (wild orchids, lentiscus, miniature carnations...), the Forest Park of Mont-Boron is a favourite haunt of joggers, botany fans and casual strollers, come to admire the magnificent view of Saint-Jean Cap Ferrat to the east, the Bay of Angels to the west.
LE PARC DU CHTEAU
PARC CHAMBRUN
One can play at getting lost in this maze of greenery where, in summer, one particularly appreciates the coolness of the fountain and shrubs. Lift to the top of the Castle hill t 04 93 85 62 33 (open 7 days a week - October to March 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. April, May, September 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. - June, July and August 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.).
Situated in the residential area of Saint-Maurice to the north of Nice, surrounded by streets whose names recall great 19th-C. poets, the Parc Chambrun is greatly appreciated for its tranquillity and its temple of love, a little masterpiece of romantic architecture.
LE JARDIN BOTANIQUE
(78 avenue de la Corniche Fleurie) Classic collections of Mediterranean flora (broom, rockrose, etc) and a conservatory.
An amusement park for both young and old : little train, mini-golf, giant chessboard, wooden huts... It is also a treasure-trove of discoveries for lovers of botany. (page 45)
Peace and harmony reign supreme in the Monastery Gardens. In the spring, the ancient pergolas are covered with climbing roses and masses of flowers perfume the air.

PLANT LIFE
PLANT LIFE
EGIONAL FLORA
he mildness of the Mediterranean climate made it possible to cultivate a rich and highly varied vegetation. As well as olive-trees, pines, cypresses, lavender and laurels, numerous species of tropical flora were imported to the Riviera during the 19th century to adorn private gardens and coastal paths.
CARNATIONS
Cultivated on the hills around Nice, carnations comprise the largest production of fresh cut flowers in the AlpesMaritimes.
It was in the 19th century, with the arrival of the English, that palm-trees were acclimatized on the Cte dAzur. They have since become it symbol.
PALM TREES
Grown in Nice since the Middle Ages, citrus trees can now be seen in many of its private gardens. Orange trees are omni-present, but Nices clementine are particulary prized for their very special taste. The cultivation of lemon trees was once a veritable industry : even today, 70% of Frances lemons are produced here.
CITRUS TREES
OLIVE TREES
Antiquity, they thrive all over the hillsides around Nice and even in its gardens. The olive-groves of the surrounding areas ensure the production of Nices famous Olive Oil.
Yuccas and agaves (flower opposite) are the most common varieties. Cactus plants clinging to rockeries flourish in the heat af the sun. Resembling a large daisy, gerbera can be found in a range of colours including yellow, orange, pink and even mauve. Lots of other flowers are cultivated on the Riviera, including lilies, gladioli, cyclamen and especially roses, whose hybridization is a local specialty.
GERBERA
ALEPPO PINES
Originally from Australia, mimosa belongs to the acacia family. It blooms between January and March, though one variety, the Four Seasons, flowers several times a year.
52
MIMOSA
Bending over the shoreline or climbing the hills, the Aleppo pine is here a familiar sight. It is the Mediterranean tree par excellence, cultivated for many thousands of years. Parasol pines, the fragrant eucalyptus, persimmon, medlar and cypress are the trees most often found in the Rivieras gardens. Graces the hedges around the loveliest villas, together with wisteria and pittosporum.
