Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australi an Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editi ons as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edit ion, and any
amendments thereto.
Full details of all Australi an Standards and related publications will be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publications; this informati on is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australi an
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives detail s of new publications, new edit ions
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggesti ons for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head offi ce of Standards Australi a,
are welcomed. Noti fi cati on of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

This Standard was issued in draft form for public review as DR 74110.

PREFACE

This standard was prepared by the Association’s Committee on Polytetrafluoroethylene

Products.

The standard specifies the normal commercial tolerances for finished parts of
fluorocarbon. Closer tolerances than those specified can be achieved, but will generally
cost more, and in most applications will be unnecessary. Unless the part designer has
a sound background in fluorocarbon technology and parts design, assistance should be

sought from manufacturers of the base fluorocarbon material or the semifinished

product.

Parts made of fluorocarbon resins exhibit cold flow, which means that in constrained
conditions the parts will ultimately flow to conform to the configuration of the
restraining member. Designers should take advantage of this property to, for instance,
relax the extremely tight dimensions required for interference fit of metallic inserts
(say a bearing). A fluorocarbon bearing of normal commercial tolerance could perhaps
be used.

Closer tolerances should bot be requested unless the application requires such
tolerances and in any case should then be restricted to only those dimensions which
are critical.

1 SCOPE. This specification lays down the normal commercial tolerances on

finished parts made from fluorocarbon resins produced by —
(a) machining;
(b) automatic compression moulding; or
(c) injection moulding.
It applies to parts produced from virgin, reprocessed or filled fluorocarbon resins.
NOTE: The need for and the use of closer tolerances is discussed in the Preface.

2 APPLICATION. The tolerances specified herein apply to parts made from the
full resins, viz—
(i) polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)
(ii) fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP); and
(iii) related fluoropolymer resins such as—

chlorotrifluoroethylene ((CTFE)
ethylene trifluoroethylene (ETFE)
ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene (ECTFE)
perfluoroalkoxy (PFA)
polyvinylidene fluoride.

3 CONDITIONING. All samples for compliance testing shall be conditioned for

24 h at 23 ± 2°C and measured at that temperature.
NOTES:
1. Part s made of fluorocarbon resins do not absorb moisture; therefore humidity control is unnecessary.
2. Part s made of PTFE undergo a transit ion duri ng which there is a signifi cant volume change. The
greater part of this change occurs between 19 and 20°C; therefore machining of PTFE should not be
carr ied out in this temperature range.

4 METHODS OF MEASUREMENT. All dimensions and tolerances shall he

measured with conventional measuring equipment except knife-edged or point contact
instruments. All measurements shall be carried out at 23 ± 2°C.
NOTE: Parts made of fl uorocarbon resins deform easily and part icular care is necessary to prevent such
deformation. The use of measuring gauges and suitable measuri ng ji gs is fr equently agreed upon by the
suppli er and purchaser for a part icular fi nished part .
