Communication through Information Technology Computer technology and telecommunication links via satellites have brought revolutionary changes

in the field of communication. Barriers of space and time have collapsed. New information technology is quicker, safe, and less prone to distortion or misrepresentation. I. E mail:

1. It is the popular name for electronic mail. 2. It involves sending messages via telecommunication links. 3. If two computer terminals are connected on network, it is possible to send messages from one to the other (irrespective of distance). 4. The message is typed on a computer screen at one end and is conveyed to the other end through electric impulses. 5. The receiver at the receiving end is alerted by a signal that he has received a message and the mail is in the electronic mailbox. 6. The message is either flashed on to a screen immediately or is stored and attended to at leisure. 7. If the computer has fax, telephone or telex facilities attached to it, E mail can be used even to transmit telephonic messages or to fax important documents. 8. To use send or receive E mail one needs to have an access to a network area, a PC, a telephone, a modem with its software and the basic knowledge of using this software. 9. Sending E mail is quite cost-efficient. Advantages of E mail: 1. It is a quicker means of transmitting messages. 2. Cheaper rates for long distance communication. 3. It does not thrust itself upon the receiver. (a phone call is highly disruptive causing interruption) 4. It does not depend upon the availability of the receiver. 5. The message can be sent anywhere, anytime no barriers of any kind. 6. The message can be sent to large number of people simultaneously or selectively depending on the situation. 7. If both the receiver and the sender are simultaneously sitting at the terminals, clarifications can be sought and offered and additional information conveyed immediately. 8. It can be easily stored for future reference. 9. The chances of tampering with the messages are much fewer than in the case of messages conveyed through conventional modes.

II.

Internet:

1. It is defined as a global collection of people computers linked together by telephone lines, radio links or satellite links. 2. It is extremely versatile and fast. 3. Its popularity increases day by day. 4. It is used to send E mail across the world. 5. It is used for publicity and advertisement. 6. It is used for teleconferencing. 7. We can have an electronic copy of journals and magazines from the internet. 8. With the help of the internet we can be in touch with people around the world. 9. Customers can be provided with technical support through the internet. 10. It helps in electronic commerce. III. Teleconferencing or videoconferencing:

1. It allows people to meet and work collaboratively without having to be together in one room. 2. It has made distance immaterial. 3. Through it we can see and hear each other, and share information with one another as if we were all placed together in one room. 4. It leads to substantial saving both in terms of money and executive time. 5. In this era of globalization when multinationals are simultaneously operating in several countries separated from one another by thousands of kilometres, teleconferencing can prove to be a very effective means of mutual consultation. IV. Fax (Facsimile)

1. Many companies prefer facsimile (fax) transmission facilities. 2. The fax machine is very useful for transmitting visual material such as diagrams, illustrations, photographs or copies of artwork visuals. 3. The fax machine must be connected with a telephone. 4. The document to be transmitted is fed through the machine and is electronically scanned and signals are transmitted to the receiving end, where an identical copy of the document is reproduced on a blank sheet of paper by the receiving machine. 5. It is a quick means of transmitting information. 6. The finally prepared document is inserted in the machine and almost instantaneously copy of the document comes out at the receiving end. 7. Charts, graphs and other visuals can be sent through fax.

8. Faxing a document is like instantaneous transmission of a photocopy of the document. 9. If a document is generated on a computer, it can be sent directly using a fax modem, bypassing the need to print the document first. 10. Important documents, certificated, degrees, testimonials, agreements and contracts can be sent from one place to another at the speed of a telephone call.
