Strathmore is one of 20 communities across Canada vying for a chance to win the highly-coveted Presidents Choice BBQ Town contest. After originally being selected as one of 600 communities, Strathmore made it to the semi-final round in online voting, where they are ranked near the top of the 20 remaining finalists. I think that its really important that people vote, said the towns Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford. Were in the upper portion of the Top 10 as of (Tuesday afternoon) and its coming along really well. Its important people vote every single day. Everybody, please, take the time to vote. Its easy to vote and if you have any questions, call the (Town Office). The Grand prize is a BBQ event for up to 5,000 people, family entertainment, stage shows with Hedley as the headliner and a chance to set a World Record. There will also be $25,000 donated to Presidents Choice Childrens Charity. There are nine secondary prizes available, which includes a BBQ for up to 2,000 people. Its very special and a great promotion for the town, said Stanford. I want to thank the girls (at the town office) who spent a lot of time on it to try and encourage everyone to vote, because it will help the community greatly. In order to see our town make it to first place and win the grand prize, we need to get out and vote every day until June 11. The winning community will be announced on June 14. Go to www.pcbbqtown.ca to vote. The link for the PC BBQ Town Strathmore page can also be found on both the Strathmore Times and the Town of Strathmores Facebook pages. If we got that concert here, wow it would be great, he said.

Grade 6 students prepare for transition

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Making the transition from elementary school to junior high can be daunting. Suddenly you go from the top of the school, right back to the bottom. It can be tough and the staff at Crowther Memorial Junior High knows this, which is why they have their annual Grade 6 BBQ. We invite them because we want them to get a sense of what the school is before they start in September, and to meet their new teachers, to get a tour of the school, to meet the office staff, said Linda Tucker, associate principal of Crowther Memorial Junior High. We do this really cool digital scavenger hunt where they use their own iPhones or cell phones and iPads and take pictures around the school and submit it, and then at the end there are prizes. Its really just about welcoming them here and easing their fear before they come. Between the four schools invited; Wheatland, Westmount, Brentwood and Carseland there are approximately 170 Grade 6 students who attend the tour and BBQ annually.

Some will insure seasonal toys (bikes, H CommerCIAl quads, skidoos) and some will insure only antiques. Some insure just your bike. H reCreATIon Some insure out of province locations and some wont. Some companies wont even H lIFe insure a mobile home! Is your home high value? Or log? Or was it built in the fifties? H TrAvel What kind of heating do you have? Do you own horses, or pigs? Do you live in town Take ACTION or out of town? Do you use your vehicle for work? Do you store work tools in your Against High garage? Do you have an at home business? This is honestly one of the best days that we have in our school is Grade 6 BBQ day, said Tucker. Teachers Anne Paskevich and Colin Lenox organized the day, though all of the staff do get involved in some way, and the day led by the Grade 9 student leadership kids. Our leadership program is just such an important citizenship community program because its building these Grade 9 kids, its really building them into future leaders, working with kids and developing them and taking the lead on managing students and it just empowers their own communication skills, said Tucker.

Year End BBQ raises money for SHS alumni

it was that time of year again for Strathmore High School to host their annual Year end Barbeque, this past Friday, June 1. Different than previous years, the Student Leadership Council prepared a fundraiser with proceeds going towards SHS alumni, Kyle Ruppe, who has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The SLC had a slip n slide that students could pay to use, a cotton candy machine, and collected money around the school by passing around containers and asking for donations. Contributions can be made by visiting http:// www.KyleisBeatingit.com to help cover the expensive costs of the innovative treatments that the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota can offer Kyle.

RCMP look for suspects in liquor store robbery

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter On May 30 two suspects wearing Guy Fawkes masks entered a local Crowfoot Liquor Store. The only people in the store at the time were the clerk and one customer. The suspects, both armed, pointed firearms at both the clerk and customer and demanded money from the clerk. The suspects were described as being 56 to 58 tall. Both wore all black, including their clothing and shoes, and wore the distinctive Guy Faux masks. This isnt the first robbery in recent months, though RCMP cant confirm if the two are connected. We actually had one in March, I believe it was March 3, one of the other Crowfoot Liquor Stores was robbed. It was a different scenario but there are some similarities between the two, but we cant say that it was the same person or persons involved in that one at this point, said Cnst. Clint Chisan. We dont have any strong suspects at this point. The police statement reported that a mid 1980s GMC Jimmy or Chevy Blazer, with passengers, was seen nearby at the time of robbery. RCMP are asking anyone with any information to call either the Strathmore RCMP at 403-934-3968 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Cougar sightings in Wheatland County

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter After hearing of other attacks on horses in the Wheatland County area and the speculation of it being cougar attacks Nightingale resident, Fred Armstrong is convinced thats what caused the death of his horse. Late Tuesday evening, May 29, or early morning that Wednesday, Armstrongs horse Bill was viciously attacked and killed. We have two horses and the second horse was not touched. We didnt think it was a cougar until we heard that two horses in Rockyford were attacked. We just put two and two together, said Armstrong. By Friday, June 1 the Armstrongs decided to contact Wheatland Conservation and Wildlife Association to find out what could have caused Bills death. In an interview with CTV, Jim Songhurst with the Wheatland Conservation and Wildlife Association, said there have been cougar sightings in the area, but states they arent certain what attacked the horses. Neither of the two horses in Rockyford that were attacked was killed, but it will take time to recover from the attack. Cubs have been spotted in the Nightingale area. Anyone who spots a cougar or cubs in their area is encouraged to contact Wheatland Conservation and Wildlife Association at 403-9343422.

Strathmore named best small community for business

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Strathmore has can add another item to its boasting list after being named the No. 1 overall best small community for business in Western Canada in Alberta Venture Magazine. Alberta Venture Magazine got a hold of us a couple of months ago, probably in about February, and they talked to us about what is going on in town, said Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford. Stanford said administration sent material to the magazine about what was happening in town after being told Strathmore was being considered as one of the top 25 best small communities for business. Approximately a month ago the town was contacted and told Strathmore had in fact made it into the top 25. Alberta Venture Magazine credits fast development processes, the business property tax rates and industrial land prices as some of the reasons Strathmore is the place to be. The new Wildflower reservoir, the Wastewater Treatment Plant and the connection to the Calgary regional waterline are other bonuses to investing in Strathmore. The town is business friendly, we try to help the builders, developers, investors because we want the town to grow so we can have more tax money. Particularly industrial and commercial because they produce good tax money that we need to help out our budget, said Stanford. There is currently a 10-day maximum wait time for development permits, but Stanford states often theyre done within two days. Last year development permit num-

bers were good, though building permits have been lower in the past few years, something Stanford thinks is going to change. He said he thinks the building permits will improve substantially because of developers like Rencor Developments and Brett Wilsons Prairie Merchant Corp. and the many others who want to invest in Strathmore. Ron Renaud, president of Rencor Developments, which built the shopping centre where Wal-Mart and Sobeys are located, will be moving forward with its newest commercial development in Strathmore this year. Renaud said in an interview with Alberta Venture magazine that Strathmore is a great place to do business, the costs are reasonable, administration is accommodating and willing to work with the developer and the entitlement process is streamlined. Its not known yet which businesses will be coming first to the new development which will be on the east side of George Freeman Trail.

Roots of Empathy expanding as far as sponsors and volunteers are supporting

Jenna Campbell Times Contributor Empathy is a trait that everyone can improve on, and is the same trait that students are learning in classrooms throughout Strathmore and area through the Roots of Empathy program. Roots of Empathy is an award winning, charitable organization that teaches students from kindergarten to Grade 8, the important virtue of empathy. In order to do so, a parent and infant visit a classroom for frequent visits over the course of the school year. A trained Roots of Empathy instructor will also be present to help aid the classrooms attention to the small baby to assist the class to understand why the baby may feel a particular way. The instructor will help the students identify what can be done to create a positive outcome for the baby, and in doing so, the students learn nurturing skills. The interaction between the class and the young child can often be integrated within the required school curriculum, while at the same time, it teaches the students social and emotional literacy, as well as problem solving. The Roots of Empathy program was created in 1996 by Canadian Mary Gordon, who had firsthand experience working with families that had endured child abuse, neglect, and domestic violence. Gordon saw the absence of empathy in a lot of the familys homes and therefore saw the need to create the experimental program. Gordon outlined the initial Roots of Empathy program in 1996, and it was piloted in a few classrooms throughout Toronto. The Roots of Empathy program has expanded significantly over the past 16 years, and has reached beyond Canadian borders. Roots of Empathy programs currently are situated in the United States, New Zealand, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and in the Isle of Man. According to the Roots of Empathy website, www.rootsofempathy.org, over 450 000 Canadian students have been taught by through the Roots of Empathy program over the past 16 years. The Roots of Empathys mission is to create caring individuals that can recognize the feelings of others, igniting an internal and external awareness. In a long term perspective, the Roots of Empathy states on their website that the desire is to break the intergenerational cycle of violence and poor parenting. The gap between young children becoming responsible parents may appear to be large, but since the year of 2000, there have been nine independent evaluations of the effectiveness of the program, and two whole reviews of Roots of Empathy that are able to support the organizations claims. The key findings in all of the studies have showed a consistent increase in emotional literacy and pro social behaviors, and furthermore, a decrease in aggression. In the Wheatland County region, there have been eight Roots of Empathy programs during the 2011-2012 school year including: a couple of Grade 1 classes, several Grade 5 classes, a split class of six, seven and eight, and a Grade 8 class. Schools currently affiliated with the Roots of Empathy include: Westmount, Trinity Lutheran Christian Academy, Standard School, Brentwood, and Sacred Heart Academy. Sandy Vigrass, the Roots of Empathy Provincial Manager in Alberta, who has also been an instructor herself, said that

The Roots of empathy Baby Celebrations were held at the FCSS office on may 17. Parents, babies, teachers and instructors who have had the programs in their classes/have taught the class were all invited for a final gathering of the school year. Jenna Campbell Photo

the Wheatland County Schools demand for the program is exceeding what can currently be accommodated. Because we dont have as much funding to cover the training costs, costs to run the program, or peoples change their careers, some of our instructors are volunteers and they dont volunteer forever, so we have to replace them. Funding is definitely something that restricts the expansion of the program, she said. Vigrass stated that the success of each year has been greatly dependant on getting the message out there; Roots of Empathy need volunteers. Roots of Empathy receives some funding from the Government of Alberta from the Human Services Ministry but, the success of the program has been largely attributable to generous donations from sponsors. In Strathmore, weve had generous support from Wheatland County and FCSS (Family and Community Support Services), and its what helps us to be able to maintain and increase the number of programs in Strathmore, said Vigrass. This years group of Roots of Empathy programs in Strathmore and area are soon to come to an end, and a new wave

of programs will be implemented in classrooms in the upcoming school year. Where each program is to be designated is established at the school level, where the school believes the program can be the most effective. Its a universal program. Its not meant for the victim kids or the bullied kids, its meant for a whole classroom of children. It is most effective when the classroom teacher is keen, enthusiastic and, is willing to incorporate it in within their regular Alberta education curriculum thats required, said Vigrass. For the 2012-2013 school year, Roots of Empathy is recruiting families with an infant born in June, July, or August, who are willing to visit a classroom nine times throughout the school year. Community members, support staff from schools and social serving agencies who are interested to train as a Roots of Empathy Instructor are most welcome to apply. Almost ready to hit the links

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Chinook Credit Union and the Foothills Advocacy in Motion Society are busy planning the final touches for the second annual Chinook Credit Union Charity Golf Tournament on July 6. The golf tournament was an idea that was thought of and brought to fruition by Craig McKenzie, program manager with the AIM Society and Bill Crawford, former branch manager for Chinook Credit Union. Crawford has moved on from the credit union but his replacement, Larry Betts, is just as enthusiastic about the partnership. I think the AIM Society is a great organization, it really helps people, it helps those adults with disabilities be active in the community and be part of the community and I think thats important, said Betts I think its important to be involved in our local community and thats kind of one of my passions or missions. One of my goals is to have a strong presence in the community with not just myself but I think its important that the team that I work with are involved in various capacities. Cory Szmydt is an AIM Society client and is happy to have them in town. I feel like really excited (about) how they came by to help me get another position right now at Canadian Tire and I have already talked to people about putting more hours in and already this week I did. Another thing Im excited for (is) new trips and maybe one day go back to school if possible and sorts of other different things too, said Szmydt. The AIM Society is a support system for people with disabilities and is there to help each person achieve success no matter what it means to them. The school system helps people with disabilities until theyre 18 years old at which point AIM will take over if requested.

Gleichen dam gets upgrade

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Wheatland County councillors approved a motion to develop a fenced parking area, washroom facility and garbage cans around the Gleichen Dam, with signage posted to indicate to individuals about potential safety risks. There were concerns because the residents were using the area for recreation purposes like fishing. The problem wont go away, said Councillor Ken Sauve, who put forth the motion to develop the area with appropriate conditions and signage to monitor the site. The vote to develop the area was not unanimous and three councillors felt the site should be off limits to recreation use. Its their drinking water. There are complaints in the town. They say youre allowing people to swim and fish. Now we are bringing toilets in. I am not in favour, commented Councillor Alice Booth. Post signs that trespassers will be charged. We arent Glenmore Lake. Public works manager Gerry Van Oostwaard said fishing would not affect the water quality but he had other concerns. I am worried about vandalism, garbage and people falling through the ice in the winter,Oostwaard said. Dave Churchill, Manager of Infrastructure and Transportation said there is also the worry of gas spilled, from the augers used to drill holes for ice fishing, polluting the water. Several councillors and the public works manager noted that people often dont obey No Trespassing signs even if they are posted and suggested if it were upgraded for use, the county would have more control over the site. Fishing will continue to go on regardless, unless we post a guard there, said Councillor Ken Sauve. We need to minimize our risk. Councillor Glen Koester said that he has No Trespassing signs on his land, but was still liable if people get hurt. In previous developments we have had similar issues. When we allow development, it allows more control, said Koester, giving an example of Severn Dam. He stated that to date there had not been accidents on the ice. As far as liability, he said there is not just the dam to consider. Council obtained legal and insurance liability information, which outlined the steps that were needed to protect the county and the ratepayers. Churchill stated that because of new water developments in the area, the upgrades might be better held for a future date. In two to three years we wont need the raw water anymore. We may be able to open it up. If we gave this time, we could build a lot and make it a recreational area, and condone people using it, Churchill said. Councillor Ken Sauve said if fishing was not allowed, the site must be policed and infractions must be enforced. For safety sake, postings could be done to notify users of unsafe ice thickness. Fencing would be put up to prohibit users from driving vehicles up around the dam.

Canmores Hillbillies
Pat Fule Fule for Thought A hillbilly is defined as a free living white citizen who lives in the hills, has no means to speak of, dresses as he can, talks as he pleases, and drinks whiskey when he gets it. I think I was a hillbilly kid growing up in Canmore. I dont mean we wore straw hats and ripped clothes, or ran moonshine in souped up cars. I just mean, that in the mountains of a small, coal mining town named Canmore, the Fules were not rich, and we had some quirks! My dad was a coal miner and my mom was a chambermaid. Both immigrants, they could only get menial jobs because of their problems with English. My parents struggled and saved until we had a chance to leave the collection of Company Houses in Mineside to move to The Promised Land called Townside! While building our 950 sq.ft. Dream House, we stayed at the company house in the mountains near the mine. I was four, and stayed with mom on days when my dad worked. She even took me to her workplace, where I would color/play as she worked. One early morning, my dad had come home from the midnight shift of the mine. He saw a black bear rooting through our burning barrel! Back in these days, all garbage/paper went into a large barrel, where once a week, it would be burned. My dad still had his lunch pail, mine clothes, and steel toed boots on, when he decided to sneak up on the bear. With a swift, hard kick, dad made contact with the bears behind. I think the bear was shocked, embearassed(get it?Hah!), and hurt, because it jammed itself into the barrel and, howling and yowling, made for the woods. It hit a tree, shook off the can, and disappeared into the woods! Another reason I wonder about my hillbilly status had more to do with my dads Hungarian brother-in-law, whose family lived across from us in Townside. My Uncle Jim (false name) and his family lived across the street. He was a large, powerful man who could be very strict. Although strict, he also believed many things that he was told. For example, he was told that having raw eggs cracked on his thinning head would help re-grow his hair! I sat amazed one Saturday morning as my uncle sat with a towel wrapped around his head, and my aunt cracked three eggs on his head. She rubbed the gooey yolk into his scalp, but most of it ran down the towel and down his neck! I wondered if this would make his back hairy I mean, hey, I was five! My uncle and my dad enjoyed a good drink. My dad made us Root Beer and at the same time, his own beer! He would fill beer bottles with both root beer and beer. As kids, we thought we were so cool walking around town, drinking Root Beer, while the neighbours thought it was beer! My uncle, however decided to build a still and make his own whiskey! In the early 60s and NOW, this is frowned upon by the Law. One day, he heard the RCMP were on to him, and he panicked. He loaded his truck with the still, and delivered the pieces to OUR house! I watched in shock as he carried all the stills parts down to our basement. My dad was working in our garage at the time, so he didnt see this. My uncle ran up and down our stairs, telling me not to answer the door, and he even mentioned RCMP a few times. Even at five, I knew this was NOT good! As he left, I started to race around I was NOT ready to go to the big house, the slammer, the joint! I mean Shawshank Redemption hadnt been WRITTEN yet! I ran to find a hiding place and settled on our vacuum closet, closing the folding door behind me. Im not sure how long I was there, but I felt a little like Anne Frank! Finally my dad came in and made his way downstairs. All the way back up, he was swearing in a mix of English and Hungarian (it was almost poetic how he strung swear words together!). I came out of the closet (now THAT sounded different!) and my dad assured me I wouldnt go to jail. Then he called my uncle to tell him to get the #*!#*! still out of our basement! The illegal hooch business needed a new location! The last reason I think a little of the word hillbilly, was that my dad had a rifle, and every New Years Eve, hed fire off a few blasts. I knew there was no war going on, but he still shot that rifle off at certain special occasions! My dad was also not a pet lover; he felt there had to be a PURPOSE to have a pet. We never got a dog until I was 10, but for some strange reason we had pigeons in the garage and rabbits in a hutch. I used to think the rabbits were pets, and I fed them produce scraps from the grocery store. Now, almost 50 years later, I wonder. Were they pets, or were they part of The Fule Food Chain? Hmmmm we did seem to eat a lot of poultry when I was young you dont think?? Nah, it couldnt be, but I still have a little tear when I watch Bambi and see cute, little Thumper the bunny!! (Fule for Thought is a slice of life humourous column that will appear in the Strathmore Times, written by long-time resident, town councillor, high school teacher, coach, husband and father of two Pat Fule. Thought for the week ~

LifeStyLeS
Shelby Collett, a Strathmore bride who attended a bridal show Jan. 22, says that she wishes she would have been more organized since the bridal shows are so interesting and huge. Collett recommends going with a list of specific things to check out because although there are an array of things to see, it can be a little overwhelming and it can be hard to stay within your budget. Bazant said writing a list of what you need, or even to decide on your one splurge item whether it is the cake, or the decor, or the venue, is the best strategy because it helps you stay focused. Once you have your main idea, it makes a bridal show much more enjoyable. Bazant explains that there are a large amount of giveaways that you can enter at bridal shows, but recommends creating a separate website or email exclusively for the purpose of your wedding, so you can be contacted separately with wedding inquiries. I would recommend [the shows] to other brides, says Collett, it was really great. There is a fall bridal show to be held in Strathmore on November 3, 2012, for brides who are eager to experience all a bridal show has to offer.

Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, youll start having positive results

Bridal Shows, where do you start and what are they about?
Rebecca FRiesen Times Contributor Bridal shows are often considered essential for every woman planning on getting married, but they can leave guests feeling overwhelmed. Since June is considered the unofficial wedding month, owing mostly to warm weather and the Roman goddess of weddings, Juno, wedding talk is abundant, and brides are ecstatic to be planning an upcoming wedding, or tying the knot soon. Bridal shows are a great opportunity for businesses to showcase their services and product, as well as give brides a chance to see new styles and trends. Amanda Bazant, an event and wedding planner who owns Studio B Events in Strathmore, says that bridal shows are an excellent resource for brides and can provide many unique ideas and inspire a wedding. However, Bazant agrees that bridal shows can be intimidating and recommends a few things to try. Have a plan before you go in, Bazant suggests. If you only need to know about the florist, or decor, well then thats where you should be putting all your focus on.

Couples will all agree it is hard to plan a budget for their special day, but even harder to not over-spend, especially when tempted by all the amazing details that can be used in their wedding. The average cost of a Canadian wedding is estimated to be about $20,000 - $30,000 dollars. Amanda Bazant, who owns Studio B events, says she would estimate a local wedding to be in that price range. Bazant says weddings can get totally out of control and wedding planners can assist with keeping on budget since they notice where the money is being spent and can pull things back to cut costs. Bazant says you should look at the wedding planners website to get a feel for what their style is and meet with them to make sure the communication is good and they can envision what you want. Certification is also very important when looking for a planner, Traditionally, weddings were paid for by the brides family, and the grooms family would take care of the honeymoon, but Bazant says this is rarely the case any more. I think its huge when the couples pay for themselves, Bazant says, it shows how important this day is to them. Bazant says the amount of decor is often overlooked at a wedding, and she suggests having a smaller wedding and use lots of decor to give your guests a great experience. She also says having a theme to the wedding will help keep focus on necessary purchases rather than indulgences. You can do so much with a little bit of money, especially do-it-yourself projects. Bazant also recommends wedding insurance, which is usually a few hundred dollars. To take an average wedding and make it unique, Bazant said the venue, lighting, decor and food are all extremely important. Thats your biggest chunk of your wedding is your food, Bazant said. Make your menu a part of your theme. Kim Lund, of Kims Katering in Strathmore,

agrees that food can really enhance a wedding. A good caterer will ask about the colours and decor [of the wedding] and try and fit the meal to go with what the couple wants, says Lund. Kims Katering provides free services with their catering, such as serving the head table and free refills on punch and hot drinks, but Lund says not all catering companies do this so it is important to ask. A lot of caterers charge for additional salads, veggies or buns, Lund says, we try to include some of these in the price. Lund says Strathmore will usually run between $14-$30 dollars per plate, while in the city it will range from about $25-$70 dollars a plate. A good caterer will provide free samples and be flexible on the menu, and Lund suggests talking with your caterer to get unique ideas and make your vision come true. Lund said it is becoming more common for couples to save up more money for their weddings and try to cut as much cost where they can. In terms of catering, Lund said to make sure you have your budget planned before you start shopping for food, and to ask questions and communicate with your caterers to make sure there are no unexpected costs popping up and that you are satisfied with their service. Bazant suggests picking one splurge item and focusing extra money on it to be the extra unique thing at the wedding, whether it is the brides dress, the venue or the cake. Find the one thing that makes your wedding unique. If you like to travel, make your cake look like a stack of suitcases. Bazant also says that there are a few things that are over-rated in a wedding, such as the typical arrive in a limo which can cost hundreds of dollars. It does give your guests that wow factor when you arrive, but half of them wont even see you arrive. Bazant suggests talking as a couple to decide which things are most important to them. I had a couple who had a normal budget, but they spent $5,000 on a photographer, because that was their special thing, Bazant explains. Organization is key to a great wedding, says Lund.

Whos your farmer?

Jenna Campbell Times Contributor A foodshed is everything about and between local food, from the hands of the producers to the plates of the consumers. Foodshed: An Edible Alberta, is the name of dee Hobsbawn-Smiths new book, whose message insists know your farmer! Hobsbawn-Smith has been spreading the word on her Rural Routes road trip throughout Alberta, May-June 2012, including Strathmores local organic farm, Heritage Harvest, on Sunday, June 3 for a reading and tour. Foodshed is a book that is arranged alphabetically by ingredients, from A for asparagus to Z for zizania (wild rice), and includes 26 of HobsbawnSmiths favorite original recipes. I was focusing on things that are being raised in Alberta for local consumption, not for the export market, the people who are feeding Albertans. I believe that food is a circular continuum, growers need consumers as much as consumers need growers, she said. Hobsbawn-Smith quoted founder Carlo Petrini of the Slow Food Movement, the revolutionary promotion of local cuisine: the consumers are co-producers. From an article written by Peter Popham , Carlo Petrini: The Slow Food gourmet who started a revolution, published by The Independant, Petrini is quoted: by being informed about how our food is produced and actively supporting those who produce it, we become a part of and a partner in the production process. In addition, the book also contains a total of 76 profiles of Albertan meat producers, ranchers, fisherman, market gardeners, cheese makers, fruit and wine makers, bee keepers, you name it. I think we have missed the connection of community in how our food is produced, its important to know who is growing your food. Another message is growing food is hard work. Otherwise we would all be doing it. (The book) is also politics, the issues, the challenges, and the triumphs these 76 families illustrate, and in a greater sense, these are the issues that transcend borders and are common to farmers everywhere in North America. Hobsbawn-Smiths background in the Alberta food scene dates back to when she was a Calgary resident for 27 years. Dee was deeply involved with the food community as soon as she arrived and described her background as being, in the kitchen, I am a chef. Hobsbawn-Smith was a former restaurateur coowner and chef from 1992-1994 of the Calgary restaurant, Foodsmith, which only catered locally raised ingredients. Dee wrote a column for the Calgary Herald, The Curious Cook, for eight years and in support to the Calgary Slow Food Movement, she advocated The City Palates an-

nual bus tour for twelve years, the Foodie Tootle, which featured local growers and ranchers. I had people writing to me as a result of my columns, in the Calgary Herald, saying, where do I find this grower, how do I know what questions to ask, how do I know whats good food? Those are all big questions, and eventually by 2006, I realized the information I was gathering from my road trips and from my writing, and from my background in my restaurant were all pointing towards a book about local growers. The entire process of writing and collecting information to create Foodshed took HobsbawnSmith years, through her many travels and experiences with local food producers, which she described as the smartest people around, some of the most ingenious people around and, some of the most persevering and tenacious people around. Dont ever underestimate a farmer, you know it takes brains and guts and hard work to stick that particular job out. The farmers I know are so committed, the majority of them unfortunately have a second job off farm to subsidize their farm life. The emphasized message, know your farmer, is key, as Hobsbawn-Smith believes that if we do not support our farmers now, we will not have them in later years. We spend our money on whats important to us. In other parts of the world, we spend a higher percentage of our income on food than we do in Canada, so maybe we want to examine the role that food plays in our lives. After all, we are the sum total, only and entirely what we eat, so food a pretty important thing. Carlo Petrini quote taken from: http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/foodand-drink/features/carlo-petrini-the-slow-foodgourmet-who-started-a-revolution-1837223.html

Standard junior high students say Your Butt Stinks

Manny EvErEtt Times Contributor Students from Standard School join with BLAST (Building Leadership for Action in Schools Today!) to inform fellow students about the hazards of smoking. Since 1996 the BLAST program has used interactive and engaging methods to challenge Alberta youth in Grades 7-9 to think critically about the tobacco industry and its products, as well as the social, global and health effects of tobacco use. Heather Lisney and Barb Borkent, both program specialists with The Lung Association of Alberta and NWT came to Standard School to give some presentations and update students on the effects of tobacco in all its forms. They engaged the students in their power point presentations and had prizes for students who correctly answered some tough questions. The Junior high students were divided into four color groups and wore T-shirts that were given to them with the theme for the day Your Butt Stinks.

The students were then encouraged to participate in different sessions before being dismissed for a lunch break. Agrium from Standard generously provided a BBQ hamburger lunch in support of the day. The afternoon was spent with outside activities to encourage students to be physically active. Today, BLAST continues to offer many opportunities for students and teachers to become actively involved in tobacco education. From FREE half-day, in-school Mini-BLAST workshops and teacher professional development opportunities, to a FREE 2.5 day tobacco awareness conference in the fall, participants are trained in building school and community leadership skills while developing project planning and advocacy techniques. Former Olympic boxer continues Terry Foxs journey

Jenna Campbell Times Contributor Running a route that stretches from Thunder Bay, Ontario, across Canada to Vancouver, British Columbia, three time Olympian boxer Mike Strange made a pit stop at the Best Western Strathmore Inn on Friday, June 1, and continued westward to Calgary on Saturday, June 2. Strange chose to begin his journey on April 12, in Thunder Bay because that was the same day when Terry Fox began his journey, and the same location where the journey ended in 1980. Stranges mission is to help create childrens cancer awareness and raise funds, with proceeds going to Childhood Cancer Canada. Strange and the Box Run team have raised roughly $30,000 and hope to raise $100,000 come the end of the trip across Canada. Strange will have stayed in Calgary for three nights where he will have visited the Calgary Science School to do a presentation. In addition to running across Canada, Strange and his team have been stopping along the way at schools and hospitals to continue to raise cancer awareness. Strange was also looking forward to meeting his boxing idol, Willie de Wit, during his stay in Calgary. Strange described the 84 Olympian as being the reason why he went to the Olympics in the first place. Strange compared his excitement level to that of a young hockey fan who is about to meet professional ice hockey player, Sidney Crosby. Moving forward and beyond Calgary, Strange is aiming to reach Golden, B.C. by June 10. Were on day 52 of about 82 days, and everyone has been so great. Back 30 years when Terry did it, it was out there but not what it is now. Every three minutes, they say cancer picks a fight with another Canadian, something has to be done about it, said Strange. The initial idea to run across Canada sparked from Stranges successful fundraiser, Heaters Heroes which took place in Niagara Falls, ON, last August. The one day charity event raised over $26,000 with proceeds going to the local Tender Wish Foundation. Heater was (Robert Lavelles) nickname. He was like a second father to me and a mentor. He did a lot for me in the Olympics, he helped other Olympians, and he helped charities and children in the Southern Ontario region. Heater passed away three years ago from pancreatic cancer, so in his honour, we held this event called Heaters Heroes Run for Children. The Heaters Heroes charity event helped 16 children through the local wish foundation. One 13-year-old girl in particular, Kelsey Hill of Stevensville, ON, became close friends with Strange and passed away due to a cancerous brain tumour. Kelseys passing inspired Strange to run across Canada, as well as 11-year-old Matteo Mancini of St. Catharines, ON, who had lost part of his left leg to cancer. I thought, what can we do to make a difference for these kids? Has anyone run where Terry Fox hadnt? I didnt want to run where he ran out of respect for Terrys footsteps, I kind of wanted to pick up where he left off and run where he didnt run. As a previous Olympic boxer, Strange was accustomed to training that involved short and fast spurts, never long and strenuous runs. Strange however, described himself as always being a strong runner.

Whats cooking?
With a menu of lazy mans cabbage rolls, hot German potato salad and apple kuchen for dessert, this weeks Cooking Together program, which is held at the Lord of All Lutheran Church, all the participants enjoyed their delicious German-themed food. Rebecca Friesen Photo

Ive done a few races, a half marathon, a couple of ten kilometer, fun races. Ive never ran a marathon in my life, and people are saying, youve never ran a marathon in your life and youre practically running one every day! Since the beginning of his trek across Canada, Strange has been running roughly around 40 km each day, which he described as being tough, but your body gets used to it. I dont think about the end, I just take it by day by day. Today is day 52 and I am just going on from there. At the end of every day, Strange will record a YouTube video and will dedicate it to someone who has been affected by cancer. In addition, an inspirational word of the day is written on a Canadian flag which is pinned to the ground to mark the end of the day, as well as the beginning of the next. Some obstacles that have been thrown in Stranges way have been some physical pain, including injury in his legs. Since going to chiropractor Sean Bourasa in Medicine Hat, Strange says his shin splints have improved by about 90 per cent. It was probably 4-5 days of excruciating pain, but I am so glad I went through him and I am doing exercises so I dont get them again. But, I am worried about going into the mountains in B.C. Weight loss has become a problem as well. In the beginning, Strange was excited at the thought of losing

some extra weight, but cannot afford to lose any more. With the total of weight lost reaching 20lbs, Strange described having limited energy in the past several days, but has since been taking a high calorie, carb boosting powder. The external complications of the weather have been challenging, all factors included: wind, rain and snow. Strange recalls being stuck in a snow storm on the Trans-Canada Highway in English River, ON, where the first 5 km were a foot and a half deep. Strange successfully managed to complete 28 km for that day. Its not as physically tough as it is mentally, youre lonely out there. Having people come out and run with me really helps me out and make the time go a lot faster. I have my MP3 player but its tough, listening to the same songs like Running on Empty by Jackson Browne. Its stuff like that that keeps your going. Many more events to raise money are on the agenda in Vancouver and back in Stranges home in Niagara Falls. I dont have superman blood in me, it is just determination and perseverance that have helped me and gotten me throughout the Olympics and running across Canada. You can follow Stranges journey and donate to Childhood Cancer Canada by visiting the website, http:// www.boxrun.ca/ which also links to his Facebook page and twitter account.

Standard Grade 9s P .A.R.T.Y. in Calgary

Manny EvErEtt Times Contributor The visit to Calgary was anything but a Party as the Grade 9 students from Standard school participated in the P.A.R.T.Y. program, which stands for Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth, as part of their health curriculum. P.A.R.T.Y. focuses on making smart choices. Students going to the program would encounter some people who unfortunately made some pretty bad choices, or who had someone make a bad choice for them, and are now living with the consequences. The students and parent volunteers and teachers spent the day learning about traumas incurred by impaired driving, the realism of drugs and their unfortunate availability to todays youth and the consequences that can happen if they participated in recreational drug and alcohol use. The morning started with a definition of each of the terms used in the P.A.R.T.Y. acronym. The students were told that 95 per cent of the accidents that occurred are preventable. The students learned about the stupid line, which is an imaginary line in your brain that divides your thoughts into good decisions and bad decisions (much like the devil and angel on your shoulders). The students learned about safety in driving, including the recent addition of the distractive driving law while operating a vehicle. The laws are enforced for the safety of everyone. Lunchtime proved to be a challenge as students were assigned a disability such as a brain injury, blindness, tunnel vision, no use of hands, or a spinal injury where they had no use of thumbs and a neck brace and needed assistance to eat. Lunch was a powerful and very real example of the consequences that can happen with bad choices. The group was introduced to the Emergency and Intensive Care units at the Foothills Hospital, and was led through a series of events that would happen when someone was admitted

Grade 9 students Corrie Stewart, Stephanie Larsen and TeddiAnn Skibsted participating in an adjusted lunch situation after being assigned a disability due to an accident that occurred while driving under the influence.

to these units. Students heard true life stories from trauma survivors that made an impact and solidified the mornings events in that they were faced with the reality of trauma, putting a face to the situation. The P.A.R.T.Y. program doesnt prevent trauma from happening but gives the students the opportunity, when faced with making choices, to make the right choices based on what they had seen and heard.

Entertainment at Relay For Life

Joey Kauenhofen Relay For Life When a loved one is diagnosed with cancer a feeling of helplessness sets in and is often overwhelming. I lost my Mom to a rare form of gall bladder cancer almost one year ago. Volunteering for the Relay for Life has been part of my healing process. I have never been involved with Relay before but decided that my energy would be better spent on doing something productive than harbouring the anger I still so often feel. So, I not only entered a team, I decided to help with the organization of the event. My name is Joey Kauenhofen and I am this years entertainment chair. I am very eager to see how everything is going to come together on June 15! I have tried my best to plan great entertainment as well as fun contests and games. My goal is to keep everyone energized and motivated throughout the night. There are three ceremonies that will be featured throughout the evening. We will begin the evening with our Survivor Ceremony where cancer survivors will be acknowledged after being treated to a special dinner. At approximately 11 pm our Luminary Ceremony will take place as loved ones will be remembered by lighting luminaries along our walking track and in the morning, to wrap up the night, we will participate in a Fight Back Ceremony. Activities will be spread out during the course of the night to keep our participants motivated and encouraged. Several groups are coming out to perform for us including Jumphouse Gymnastics. There will be a talent showcase titled Relays Got Talent starting at 9 pm, all participants will be entered into a prize draw, as it is non-competitive. We have games and contests planned such as a scavenger hunt, pizza eating contest and wacky trike races. Also, theme laps, like a p.j. lap, chicken dance lap and three-legged lap. Monopoly money will be given out to winners and will be used for buying prizes at our prize auction being held in the morning. I have included participants with children by providing a game area and bounce house that will be available during the evening and I have also incorporated a healing room equipped with relaxing music, comfortable seating, soft lighting and free massages provided by volunteers from the Alberta Massage Training of Alberta. Uplifting music will be played all night by our Emcee, Matt Redderburg. Teams are still encouraged to sign up but if you cant commit to the whole evening, volunteers to help with the contests and games would be greatly appreciated. To volunteer please register on-line so you can receive a wrist bracelet and t-shirt, allowing us to treat you to supper. Visit www.cancer. ca/relay I am still looking for folks with talent! If you would like to participate in the talent show please contact Joey at joeyksupermom@hotmail.com. Obviously, pledges and donations are always welcome as well. To pledge a team please visit: cancer.ca/relay or to donate services and products feel free to contact me at the above email address or Kristel Lang @ 403-901-8450.

Busy times with Hussar Beef Club

Cole Brown Hussar 4-H Beef Club Reporter In April we had Toni Comstock come to our meeting to do a presentation on how to do demonstrations. We held our Mini Show at Kaisers on April 28; we had a multi judging clinic, and a grooming and showing clinic. Thank you once again to the Kaiser family for hosting another one of our 4-H events! Gleichen Community Development Council wraps up

Ian Mast Gleichen Community Development Council May was a busy month in Gleichen with the promise of much more to come as the summer heats up. Due to the inclement weather on the first weekend in May, the Gleichen Community Clean Up was rescheduled to Saturday, May 12. The efforts of residents at maintaining their own blocks and back alleys allowed those who came out on Saturday to focus on some of the high traffic areas of the downtown and other vacant lots around the community. Everyone gathered back at the fire hall for a hot dog lunch put on by the Kids Club and the Gleichen Fire Department. We wish to thank Wheatland County for their assistance with the woodchipping zone at the transfer station and donation of garbage bags for the cleanup. Additional thanks for their donation of time and goods go out to the Communities in Bloom, Gleichen Fire Department, the Gleichen Kids Club, Central Bow Valley School and Gleichen Family Foods. The second annual Community Garage Sale took place on Saturday, May 26. Once again, held in conjunction with Arrowwoods annual garage sale, several households took advantage of the fine weather to do a little spring cleaning and make a little money too! Due to the unsettled weather throughout the week, we were uncertain if the sales would go on, as a result we were unable to prepare the maps listing those sales taking place. We hope to be able to offer this again next year as plans are already in the works for Garage Sale 2013. Up next for the Gleichen Community Development Council will be our hosting of the annual Show & Shine at this years Fall Fair & Rodeo, Saturday August 18. In addition to the annual car show, we are hoping to have some outdoor exhibition events as well as the return of the Redneck Olympics. For further information, check out our website at gleichen.ca. We encourage all those taking waste to the transfer station to make use of the new designated area for organic wood waste [branches, shrubs, hedge cuttings]. Wheatland County will be providing a woodchipper throughout the summer which will provide homeowners with mulch for your plant beds. The Community Development Council will continue to work with Wheatland County and Drumheller Waste to improve recycling options locally for citizens. As we head into another summer of uncertainty surrounding the fate of Central Bow Valley school, the Gleichen Community Development Council will be looking at hosting a Town Hall meeting, giving residents one more opportunity to obtain answers to many questions and concerns that some feel have yet to be resolved. Notices will be sent out to all residents in the near future with further details on the meeting and giving people an opportunity to submit questions they may have to the various government and school representatives we hope to have in attendance.

SPRING LOAN SALE

Maybe its time to think about a new car. With loan rates as low as prime + 1%, now is the time to visit our great team here at Chinook Credit Union so they can get you into that new set of wheels, and out of hot water. But our special rates dont last forever, so stop in before June 30th and talk to us about how you can take advantage of our spring loan sale. As always, conditions may apply and rates are subjefct to change. Contact your local branch for more details.

Lacrosse teams clash at Redneck Rumble

Jason Glabik Times Contributor Local youth played hard fought games in the Redneck Rumble Lacrosse tournament held in Strathmore last weekend. The sixth annual tournament was held June 1 - 3 at the Strathmore Family Centre. Planning for the event began in February and the popular tourney was successful this year, according to Michelle Brown, Strathmore Lacrosse Club chairperson. Weve got positive feedback from everybody, she said. The Strathmore Venom fielded one team in each division: novice, peewee, bantam and midget. There were 15 teams at the event, each with 15 to 20 players. The Redneck Rumble is a popular lacrosse tournament in the area and organizers always havw lots of teams wanting to take part, Brown said. Strathmore teams faced fierce competition this year, she said. The Rockyview Rage took first in the novice division and the Strathmore team took fourth. In the peewee and bantam divisions, the Calgary Knights took first, with the Venom teams hot on their heels in second. The bantam team lost by only one point, Brown said. The midget Venom team emerged victorious over the Calgary Axemen 2 and took first place. The bantam and midget games were especially fierce, Brown added.

Kirstyn Johnson, right, receives a silver medal for the junior womens long jump.

Kirstyn Johnson, left, michael Pringle and michael molina competed in provincials for track and field this past weekend, June 1 and 2.

Hawks soar at provincials

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter It was a record-breaking track season for Holy Cross Collegiate who sent three of their top athletes to compete in track and field provincials in Edmonton last weekend, June 1 and 2. Kirstyn Johnson earned a berth in provincials when she took first place at zones in Calgary in May for both long jump and triple jump. Michael Pringle finished in second for long jump and Michael Molina finished in second for high jump. For Johnson and Pringle, both Grade 10 students, it was their first time attending provincials for track and field. Molina, a Grade 11 student had attended for high jump last year. I think it was definitely more intimidating on the first day when I did triple jump because they (other competitors) were all so good and they knew what they were doing, said Johnson of the experience. I ended up faulting on my first two jumps and it was just really nerve wracking but the second day for second event was better because I knew what to expect so I feel like next year I will be better, not as intimidating. It was insane

to see the amount of dedication put into it, from our point of view we do track for two months in practice. They practice all year round and are just insane at what they do. Johnson brought home a silver medal for the junior womens long jump. Pringle placed in the top eight long jump, and is unsure of what he placed in the triple jump. It was interesting because there were records broken that have been held for 30 years, said Pringle. I think it is more nervewracking than a different sport because in other sports youre with a team and its not all on you to win. All three are already athletes in other sports. Johnson is well known for fastball among other sports, and both Molina and Pringle can be seen on the basketball courts during the season and participating in a number of other sports. I wouldnt do it (track) all year round. Other sports give us the advantage of working on (certain skills). Like me with basketball I work on jumping as much as possible and then thats how I got into high jump, said Molina, who had originally tied for second in his event, but walked away in sixth in the end.

Spartans battle in semi-final

RogeR gilbeRt Spartans Head Coach The Strathmore Boys High School soccer team wrapped up their season this week in the semi-final playoffs. After three away games last week (a win, a tie and a loss), the boys team had a 4-4-2 record and sat in third place in the Foothills Conference Soccer League. On Monday, they traveled to Okotoks to take on second ranked Holy Trinity Acadamy. The Spartans played an amazing first half with goals by Captain James Nakamura and another by season leading scorer Shane McCarten. The amazing 3-0 lead was not to last, as Holy Trinity stormed back in the early second half to equalize 3-3. Another late goal by Trinity could have deflated the Spartans. However, down 4-3, the Spartans put the ball in the net, to tie, but that goal was disallowed by the referee. It took until the final five minutes of the game before Shane McCarten scored his second tally, and all of a sudden the somber Spartan bench was alive again. A 4-4 tie brought two overtime periods, and finally a shoot-out to determine the winner. Each team gets five shooters. The first two Trinity players scored and the Spartans missed twice. Finally, two saves by substitute goalie Chuck Lee, and a goal by Taylor Keegan keep the Spartans hopes alive, down 2-1. But the Spartans could not capitialize and fell to defeat in the shoot-out. It was a great game that everyone enjoyed. Our guys played very well against a talented opponent, said coach Roger Gilbert. We succeeded in our season goals of enjoying each other, enjoying soccer, and winning plenty of games. All our loses came to the top two teams, Canmore, and Holy Trinity. Congratulations boys on good memories and a great season.
