Welcome to the Poetry Cafe

Kennedy Elementary School students present poetry writings
By KEN GRABOWSKI
Staff Writer
MANISTEE Autumn Slawters fourth-grade class at Kennedy Elementary is living proof that creativity in the arts doesnt really have an age limit. Slawter recently held a Poetry Cafe with her class that allowed them to read poems they wrote to family members and friends. It was the first time she tried this concept in her classroom and the poetry her class created amazed the Kennedy teacher. I got this idea from a teacher in Troy who has her own website and she does a Poetry Cafe with her students, Slawter said. We decorated the media center area to look like a cafe with table cloths,

Some poems were serious and some were funny, but all were enjoyed by everyone.

Students proudly show off poetry books they created with their works. Each student was given a bare book allowing them to design the cover and illustrate their poetry. and then we provided coffee, tea and treats for our guests. The students then read their poems and we invited any of our guests to read their poems as well. It was fun and really gives the kids a purpose in their poems. They were very proud of their poems. We had an open mic for others to read their favorite poems, and I read one that I wrote in seventh grade. That poem Slawter read was published in the Flint Journal, but she pointed out what amazed her was the quality of the poems created by her students who were much younger surpassed her own. Their poems were really good and after I read mine, it surprised me just how well they compared to the one I wrote at an older age, Slawter said. Students studied a variety of poetry styles including verse, haiku, rhyme and metaphor poetry. Slawter Briske called Kathy Killie Tillie Tath. It read: Kathy Tillie Tath would not give poor Lulu a bath. Shed shower herself, brush her teeth, and even scrub underneath. Shed cook and clean, shed hike and grow beans, but she would not give her poor little dog a bath. Be sure to spot check your pooch (and yourself) after spending time in potentially tick-infested areas. Never try to remove a tick yourself. If the head or pincers remain under the skin, youll increase the chance of disease transmission. Apply a topical treatment that kills and repels ticks. If you prefer avoiding chemicals, try a combination of botanical oils that is deadly to ticks and insects but safe for pets and people. For example the natural ingredients in Sentry Natural Defense are peppermint oil, cinnamon oil, lemon grass oil and thyme oil. Spending time in the sun can result in more than just fun and games. For instance, many people find that as they age, their skin begins to show the appearance of some pigmentation commonly known as sun spots. These spots can increase in number as a person ages. Unfortunately, what many people dont realize is that some of these sun spots may actually be actinic keratosis (AK), a skin condition that affects 58 million Americans and has the potential to progress to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), the second-mostcommon skin cancer. The good news is an education effort is raising awareness about the problem and how to treat it. The campaign website can be found at www.SpotSignsofAK.com. Too Much Sun Can Be Risky AKs are rough-textured, dry, scaly patches on the skin that can range in color and vary in size. They are the result of years of cumulative sun damage and most often appear on parts of the body that are most exposed to sunlight, such as the face, scalp, ears, neck, hands and arms. AKs are most common in older adults who have spent a lot of time in the sun during their lives. However, even routine activities such as walking the dog or grabbing your mail can lead to sun damage. People

who develop AKs typically will not develop just one. The condition will present in numerous spots or will continue to present intermittently over time. An Effort to Raise Awareness Dr. Ellen Marmur a dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon is raising awareness about actinic keratosis by promoting the Spot Signs of AK campaign. The campaign is an initiative developed by DUSA Pharmaceuticals. Said Dr. Marmur, Education around melanoma and other skin cancers has been very strong, but actinic keratosis remains relatively unknown. Early Detection Is Critical According to Dr. Marmur, approximately 510 percent of AKs develop into squamous cell carcinoma within an average of two years. Since there is no way to know ahead of time which ones will become cancerous, it is very important to seek a dermatologists care. Frequent skin examinations are the key to early detection and prevention. The campaign website contains information on the condition and how to find a dermatologist, as well as information on the range of treatment options available. People who get AKs typically do not get just one, said Dr. Marmur. The years of sun damage affect entire regions of the skin. This is just further reason for adults who think they have AKs to speak with their dermatologist.
