Each member in a 5-student group will assume the role as purchaser, baker, cake decorator, entrepreneur, or documentarian (as desired); but as a group, they will collaboratively plan and compete against other groups to win. Student products will be displayed in a school cake bazaar for judging, public viewing, and prospecting for potential buyers this Christmas season. Students project output will be presented in a slide presentation. Recommend for innovations on how to improve the taste, texture and design of cakes. Estimate the cost of ingredients and compute for the suggested selling price of the cakes. Bake and decorate a creative fancy Christmas cake. Join the schools Bake-a-Cake and Sell contest. Use various written and visual presentation tools to effectively communicate learning and present the project output in an effective slide presentation.

Assessment Summary
Before the project begins, K-W-L charts, brainstorming and project plans will be used by students to think about what they know about baking a Christmas cake, note what they want to know, and finally record what has been learned and is yet to be learned, to generate ideas about baking and form creative connections between prior knowledge and new possibilities. They will identify goals, design strategies to meet goals, create timelines, and

define criteria for assessment in their project plans. On-going updates will be recorded regularly in a project notebook and informal observations and anecdotal will be collected from students. Moreover, photo journals and video will be used to capture visual documentation of progress, reactions and reflections or to demonstrate skill development.

Instructional Procedures Phase 1. Getting Started

A. Present the essential question: How can we be creatively productive? Students will discuss
their ideas about being creative and productive. The teacher will then follow-up by presenting the unit question: How can we create a good-tasting Christmas cake that will compete in the market?

B. The teacher will present an overview of the project: Bake-A-Cake and Sell! Contest (A
School Cake Bazaar). Students will answer the K-W-L Chart to assess their initial knowledge about the project. The students will register and post their thoughts in a wiki page http://vktevar.wikispaces.com/ C. The students will brainstorm on the making of their project plans. They will reflect on their plans in the same wiki page given. D. Students will answer the Project Portfolio checklist as they go along with the activities in each phase of their project making. Phase 2. Gathering of Resources Students will research on the basics of cake baking and decorating. They will brainstorm on the ways to procure and make a checklist of all the needed materials and resources for the project. They may use the wiki site for collaborative sharing of their ideas and resources with other groups. Phase 3. Acquiring the Skills At this point, students are expected to have acquired the knowledge they need to proceed in baking and decorating of cakes. They are to bake and decorate their proposed cake design, and document the step by step processes using video or digital camera. Students may take turns in their role assignments so as to gain more skills they need acquire. Finished products will be evaluated using a rubrics for Cake Baking and Decorating. Students anecdotes will be written using the Anecdotal Sample Form or they may choose to log their report using the journal form. Phase 4. Skills Enhancement Mastery of the baking and decorating techniques is necessary to achieve excellent products, so students will create as many cakes as they can possibly bake (in a week or two) and work on their entrepreneurial skills this time. They will design a marketing strategy that will help them sell cakes faster. They will compute for the unit costs and mark up prices of their cakes. They will design advertisements and posters, good selling practices and product packaging. Phase 5. Showcasing At this point, students are ready for the contest Bake-A-Cake and Sell Contest! On a scheduled

date and time, all participating groups will gather in a venue (prior arrangements must be made before the contest date) for a simultaneous cake decorating contest. The cake to be used must be baked the day before. Judges will evaluate students work using the rubrics for cake decoration. Decorated cakes will be displayed in a bazaar, each with a poster advertising the quality and selling price of the product. Documentation of the project will be presented in a slide presentation with movie clips and photos as desired. Accommodations for Differentiated Instruction
