Sadguru (spiritual master) always functions with the power of a resolve. With this gift from God, he spiritually
lifts a deserving disciple just by a mere thought that his disciple should progress. A seeker / disciple of spiritual science
cannot reach the spiritual level of 70% unless he has the Guru’s grace and is guided by the Guru in the human form. This
is because in the earlier stages of our spiritual growth, we can progress just by following the basic laws of spiritual
practice. However, after a certain stage, the spiritual knowledge becomes so fine and subtle that one can be easily
misguided by negative energies (ghosts, demons, devils etc.) through the sixth sense. One needs a highly-evolved spiritual
guide in the human form to pave the way for further spiritual progress towards Sainthood. – Param Pujya Dr. Jayant Balaji

Meaning : Food , sleep anger and mating - these are equal in animals and humans. Dharma alone is distinctive between
the two. (Those) devoid of Dharma are equal to animals.

(c) Dharma Dhaara

(i) Upon achieving unison with Sadguru, a disciple accepts everything told by the Sadguru wholeheartedly.
Prior to this, a disciple should obey the Sadguru with a feeling that obeying Guru’s directives is his/her Dharma. Thus, a
disciple should be more devoted for his Guru. Until the dissolution of mind and intellect of the disciple is achieved, he has
an existence of his own. Thus, it is difficult for the mind to accept everything that the Guru (Master) says.

(ii) Once Ramakrushna Paramhansa asked his wife why a particular delicacy had not been cooked? His wife was
also his disciple. Teasingly, she said, “People are waiting outside for a Darshan (spiritual glimpse) and Swamiji is still
attached to the food.” Baba replied, “ There is no attachment of any kind left for me to live in this world. Hence, it is
with the support of this small attachment that I am spending my life.” As is said, “One who is about to drown may find
succour in clutching even to a straw.” Similarly, true saints may maintain a deliberate attachment to a tiny object and
remain in the physical form in this world to provide spiritual guidance to the people.”

(iii) The higher the spiritual level of a saint, the more their spiritual prowess and more the Chaitanya (divine
consciousness) in the words that they speak, rather than in the Mantra that they give. Let me narrate an incident in this
context. Once, our Guru’s Guru (the Master of our Master), His Holiness Bhaktraj Maharaj gave a Mantra, to a devotee
who used to be tensed about past incidences , Jo Hua So Hua” (Whatever has happened, has happened).” Due to Baba’s
spiritual ability, this phrase kindled his spiritual progress, although it did not contain any spirituality. That is why it is
said, “Mantra Moolam, Guror Vakyam”!(meaning the Master’s word is like the sacred chant ) Disciples of high-level
saints make progress not due to the prowess of the Mantra, but the Chaitanya inherent in the saint’s resolve for the
disciple to progress. Thus, an effort should be made to obey their order and perform Sadhana and engage in Dharma
Prasar.

(iv) Q: “Earlier, I did not fear my Gurudev. After continuity in Sadhana, why have I developed a fear for him?”

A: Saints are just like mothers. Hence, there is no need to be afraid of them. As we begin to learn more and
more about their powers and abilities, we develop a respect-based fear for them. Merely one glance from them can result
in achieving liberation from this illusory world, while one angry glance can also result in our spiritual degeneration. Once
seekers become aware of this, they simply develop a fear.

Till we are not aware that the person in front of us is not a saint, we can afford to be ourselves with them. But when
we become aware that we are with the Final Accountant of this universe, our hands and feet naturally start trembling.
However, such saints are a rarity in Kaliyug.

(v) A disciple gets liberated merely at the first glance of a saint. The sadguru (Master) says “ But because the veil of
mind, intellect and ego envelopes your soul, you can’t have this self-realisation, do Sadhana (spiritual practice), destroy
these three veils, and you will experience self-realisation,”

(vi) When one or two parts of a vehicle develop a snag, they can be replaced, but when all the parts start
malfunctioning and the vehicle becomes useless, it should be sold to a scrap dealer and a new car bought. Similarly, when
corruption and immoral conduct pervade all sections of the society no other option, other than a rebellion, remains.
Devastation followed by reconstruction has been an eternal process of the nature’s sustenance .

(vii) Those imparting education on spirituality must indeed impart education on Dharma(righteousness) and those
imparting education on Dharma, should also teach Raj Dharma (right conduct in statecraft). Otherwise the chaos will
continue from all across society. All the spiritualists and those who know Dharma, will have to shoulder the
responsibility and be answerable for the predicament.

(viii) One pseudo secular person said, “You are polluting the minds of Hindus through your Hindutva-based
writings. I said, ‘No, I am merely cleansing the polluted minds of so-called secularists and purifying my Motherland, so
that those who have swayed away from the path of the eternal Sanatan Dharma may merge with it and once again
become a Sanatani which is the original Dharma of all human beings.

(ix) Some of our friends say, ‘Never ever use the word ‘Hindu.’ The basic pillars of our Vedic Sanatan Dharma are
our self-realised saints. Since the 15th century, the word ‘Hindu’ has been used by many saints of the highest order. Thus,
in my view, there is no harm in considering this word to be a synonym for Vedic Sanatan Dharma. Since Saint Kabir
Das’s time, down to the present day, many saints have uttered the word ‘Hindu’ from their Holy mouth. So its usage
doesn’t require a greater certificate than that. However, I must also admit here that the phrase Vedic Sanatan Dharma
reflects the highly profound and basic form of Dharma.

(x) One of the virtues of God is fearlessness. If one wishes to be in unison with God, one will have to inculcate
this virtue. Death is certain. Anybody who is born will die as and when destined. Then why fear this eternal truth.
Leading a fearless life and treading the path of Absolute Truth, contributing one’s mite to activities of Dharma and
contributing one’s Karma (action) without a sense of doer-ship is called Sadhana and one follows it is a true
sadhak(seeker) .

(d) Essence of Bhagvad Gita

swadharmapI chaavekshy na vikampiturmahasi

dharmyoddhi yuddhachyoNyakshatriyasya na vidyate

Meaning: Thus, as per your own Dharma too, you are not worth cultivating a fear; meaning you should
not be afraid; because for a Kshatriya (warrior), there is no other prime duty than fighting a Dharma-based
war.

Implied meaning: There is no place for emotions in spirituality. Here, Shri Krushna is telling Arjun,
that he should follow his Dharma as per his Varna(class). And the Dharma of a Kshatriya is to fight a war,
even if the enemy side includes his kith ad kin, for, there is no bigger duty for a seeker than following the
Dharma. Any seeker who does not do his/her Karma, trapped by the six foes viz “desire, anger, greed,
attachment, ego and jealousy actually does Adharma. In spirituality, one must understand the difference
between Bhav (spiritual emotion ) and Bhavana (emotion, or feeling), only then can one progress on the path
of Dharma. Emotion means what our mind says and Bhav (spiritual emotion) means what God wants us to do.
This is what Dharma recommends. Here, Arjuna is overpowered with emotion on seeing his close relatives,
teachers and friends as his opponents in the battlefield and his emotions envelope him. Hence, Lord Krushna
has to remind him of his Dharma as per his Varna and let go off his emotions. Thus, He, motivates him to fight.
To imbibe the difference between Bhav (spiritual emotion) and Bhavana (feeling), the seeker must analyse
every incident if his action will please the God and also if it is in accordance with Dharma. Thus, after making
this kind of attempts with consistency, the seeker is able to control his emotions and can follow Dharma on the
basis of prudence and discrimination.

2. Basic principles of spiritual practice

We will take a look at what benefits one accrue in the company of saints.

Saint Eknath Maharaj has said that the pleasure that an ordinary person gets in the company of a woman, the
same kind of pleasure is derived by a seeker in the company of saints who has a perfect control over all worldly
pleasures.

The less desires a person has, the more enjoyable is his company. Inspite of the desires being present in a
subtle form in children they are very lovable. Then why should one consider it impossible for one whose desires
have totally been destroyed by The Lord’s grace to impart Bliss to others when in His company ?’ Saints emit
vibrations of Bliss. Every seeker experiences them once he is able to perceive the subtle dimension beyond the
five senses, mind and intellect.

In the company of an evildoer an individual begins to consider unhappiness, for instance stealing,
drinking alcohol, etc. as happiness. In the company of a saint however happiness appears like unhappiness.
Actually this is detachment (vairagya). Saints destroy the very desire for happiness. Similarly in the company of
a saint, due to the acquisition of strength to endure unhappiness even that appears like happiness. Hence no
unhappiness is fel; only Bliss is experienced in Their company.

Just as cancer cells are destroyed with certain radiations, so also dissolution of the mind and intellect
occurs after exposure to vibrations of Bliss from a saint when in His company for a long time. In other words,
the subtle and causal bodies and nescience are destroyed, and the individual experiences inner Bliss.

Through an instance, we will see what happens in the company of a saint. Once, a disciple went to his
Guru and said, ‘I have been trying to meditate regularly for the past 12 years; but am not able to focus my mind.
I have come to you for the resolution of my problem.’ Smiling, the Guru said, “Stay here for a few days. Then
I will convey the solution to your problem. After seven days, the Guru summoned the disciple. As soon as the
Guru looked at the disciple, he lay prostrate at the Guru’s feet and after paying his obeisance, said, “Master ! I
have got the answer to my question. Ever since I have come in your company, my mind has become totally
thoughtless. Even if I want, thoughts do not stay for long.” Such are the results of being in the company of
saints !

3. Practical guidance on implementation of spirituality


What should one do when the Guru comes to one’s home?

A.) When the Guru comes home, one should decorate the house with flowers, light up lamps (of oil or ghee
and avoid lighting up candles, as they are Tamoguni (spiritually impure) and by elegantly drawing designs on the
floor made of special white powder and colours (Rangoli). One should remember Saint Tukaram Maharaj’s
words, “The day saints come home is in itself the day of Divali or Dushehra”. This also facilitates the
development of spiritual emotion (Bhav) towards the Guru.
Just before His expected arrival, one should keep at the entrance half a bowl of milk, a tumbler of lukewarm
water to wash His feet and a towel to wipe them. Similarly, a platter containing sandalwood paste (gandha),
turmeric (haldi), vermilion (kumkum), consecrated rice (akshata), flowers, a lamp (niranjan) with clarified butter
(ghee) and an offering of some sweetmeat or sugar should be kept ready for performing His aarti (the ritual of
waving lit lamps).
One should wait on the road, outside the home, to receive the Guru at the scheduled time of His arrival.
When He arrives, one should escort Him to one’s home with honour. One should enter the house before Him and
request Him to step onto a wooden platform (patla) placed outside the threshold of the door. Then one should
pour milk from the bowl on His feet with the left hand and with the right hand rub the milk onto them. Keeping
the cup of milk aside, one should then pour lukewarm water from the tumbler over His feet with the left hand and
they should be washed with the right hand. In cities, due to tiled flooring there is a likelihood of collection of
water. So instead of a wooden platform, the Guru should be requested to stand in a big plate (parat). In such a
case, His feet should be washed only with a spoonful of milk and then with water. Since there is a likelihood of
the milk and water accumulating in the plate and of making the Guru’s feet greasy, less milk should be used. The
Guru should then be requested to take one or two steps with wet feet and then they should be wiped with a towel.
The big toes of both the feet should then be ritualistically worshipped in the usual way, with sandalwood paste,
consecrated rice, flowers, turmeric powder and vermilion. This worship should be repeated on the forehead of the
Guru midway between the eyebrows, and He should either be offered a flower or garlanded.
Then He should be offered an Aarti with a lit lamp (Niranjan) waved around His head thrice. Finally, a
peda or any other sweetmeat should be offered or fed to Him. Lastly, after offering obeisance (namaskar)

He should be escorted to His Aasan (seat) or room in the house. If the Guru says the gross worshipping is
not required, then the disciple should obey the directives and do the whole process at the subtle plane when the
Guru arrives. At times, many disciples come together when the Guru arrives at a seeker’s place. Then it is not
possible for all of them to do the Paadya Pujan (ritualististic worshipping of the Guru’s feet); therefore the other
disciples can do the Paadya Pujan at the subtle plane.
If the Guru looks tired after a long journey, then instead of making Him stand at the doorstep, He should
be offered a seat in the house and then worshipped ritualistically. If He is very tired, then instead of worshipping
Him immediately, one should allow Him to rest. Ritualistic worship can be performed after some time.
However, while doing all this, one should remember the basic point that rather than external decoration,
doing spiritual practice as advised by the Guru is more important. The Guru is appeased faster with internal
decoration ie. with one’s spiritual practice. The importance of decorating the house when the Guru comes,
preparing His favourite dishes etc. is not even 1% in contrast to doing the spiritual practice advised by Him,
which has 100% importance.

B.) Throughout the duration of His stay at the seeker’s place, the Guru should be worshipped every morning just
like other deities. If not the entire ritual, at least sandalwood paste (gandha) and vermilion (kumkum) should be
applied to the Guru’s forehead daily. Since it is important to serve the Guru when He is staying at one’s place, the
disciple often does not find time to ritualistically worship the Guru’s photographs and deities as usual. It does not
matter if one does not perform that worship for that duration. But if possible, one may ask someone else to do it.
When the Guru is departing from one’s home, vermilion (kumkum) should be applied on His forehead and He
should be offered Aarti with a lit-up lamp (Niranjan). Whatever offering one makes to the Guru should be
preferably done when He is worshipped either on arrival, or before departure. If that is not possible, then it may
be done during worship on any other day during His stay.

C.) One should take leave from the workplace and remain with Him constantly.

D.) Water for His bath and His clothes should be kept ready. After His bath, He should be ritualistically
worshipped, as described above by applying sandalwood paste (gandha) to His forehead and offering flowers and
consecrated rice (akshata) at His feet.

E.) Separate towels for wiping His face, hands and feet should be kept. After He washes His face and hands, He
should be offered the towel meant for wiping His face and hands. His feet should be wiped outside the bathroom,
if He happens to stand there, or otherwise, after He sits down.

F.) The meals prepared for Him should include His favourite dishes and should be in accordance with the dietary
restrictions that He follows. If one is unaware of what they are, then one should ask one of His close disciples.
After the meal, He should be offered water to wash His hands and a towel to wipe them.

G.) One should wash the Guru’s clothes oneself and iron them as well. One should not get them washed by a
servant, or ironed in a laundry.

H.) When fanning the Guru, it should coincide with His or one’s own breath and should not be mechanical like
the electric fan which operates without any spiritual emotion.

I.) One should welcome everyone accompanying the Guru cordially.

J.) When the Guru comes home, with His permission one should invite the other disciples of the Guru and also
those who like to pay their respects - obeisance- to saints. All those coming for the Guru’s darshan should be
offered tea, snacks and meals courteously. Their accommodation etc. too should be looked after. This is because
they have come to visit the Guru, and are not unwanted guests.

4. Anubhutis (spiritual experiences) of seekers


Today, we will take a look at the Anubhutis of Shri Muktesh Singh Manhar from Karnavati (Ahmedabad) India.
(i) “I came to know about you (Tanuja ) through Facebook and started reading your posts. I have been
associated with several spiritual personalities. However, the information contained in your articles is unique and
amazing. I began making efforts to invite you to Karnavati after understanding your efforts towards Dharmjagruti
(spreading awareness about Dharma), but I don’t know why my efforts went in vain. Finally, when I learnt that
you are arriving in Karnavati, I left all my work to meet you.
I live all by myself here as my family lives elsewhere in Gujarat. I do not roam around with friends; but go
around at times and also used to eat in hotels. Since I first met you and after talking to you, a change has come
about in my thoughts and nature. Since that day, I have taken a resolve not to consume non-vegetarian food (which
I used to eat rarely). Food cooked in most places outside, particularly in hotels, is Tamasic (spiritually impure).
After I learnt this from your discourse, I have started cooking myself at home.”
Analysis of Anubhuti: Due to troubles by negative energies, some seekers like to eat non-vegetarian food. By attending
the discourse of a spiritually evolved, spiritual healing takes place automatically and the negative energy that causes
troubles and satiates its own desires, either gets destroyed due to the energy of the discourse, or they attain Gati
(momentum after life). Muktesh is basically a sattvik natured seeker and due to the troubles caused by negative energies,
he felt like eating non-vegetarian food at times. Upon attending the discourse, spiritual healing was done on him and he
stopped eating non-vegetarian food. Implementing the issues told in a discourse is called seeker-hood. Food from hotels is
primarily Raj-Tam (spiritually impure) oriented. His realisation, and making an effort to cook his own food since he stays
alone is a sign of seeker-hood. Other young seekers, who live alone, must learn from him.

(ii) “By February-March, I had become a regular reader of your posts and used to share this knowledge with other
family members. My younger brother’s examinations were just round the corner and as per your advice on
facebook, I asked him to chant this Mantra “सरAवती नमAतW
ु यं वरदे कामY?पणी ?वPारEभ कZर[या6म 6स?Gभ7वतु मे

सदा” ॥ (Saraswati namastubhyam varade kamaroopini, vidyarambham karishyami siddhirbhavatu mey sada)

along with a prayer. He started doing it and his interest, attention in studies and concentration began to increase,
which surprised the entire family.”

Analysis of Anubhuti: As I have told earlier, during the present times, 50% of the ordinary people and 70% seekers are
experiencing troubles caused by negative energies. The members of Muktesh’s family too are seekers. Hence, all of them
are facing problems caused by negative energies. Negative energies cause disturbance in studies. By praying to Mother
Saraswati, Her Grace was shifted to his brother and his concentration improved. Sanskrut shlokas (couplets) too have the
ability to do spiritual healing and their recitation removes the black veil surrounding our mind and intellect.

Shri Muktesh Manhar

(iii) “On May 22, 2012, during a conversation with Didi , she told me to display her photo with a particular hand
mudra in my mother’s room . I went home on May 26 and after placing Didi’s picture in the room, I found that the
environment in our home had started improving from that day onwards. The same evening, we could perform the
Atmashanti (peace for the departed soul) ceremony for our Buaji (paternal aunt), which we had not been able to
conduct for quite some time!”
Analysis of Anubhuti: His mother too suffers from troubles caused by negative energies. Hence, I had asked him to
look at the Mudra and do spiritual healing. The divine consciousness projected by the Mudra and the Bhav (spiritual
emotion) of all the family members brought about a change in the house although I have met Muktesh and his father
merely once.

(iv) “This incident happened on May 27, 2012. My father told me over the phone how Didi came in his dream and
explained how to attain Siddhis (supernatural powers). The entire next day, my father could smell some fragrance of
chandan or jasemine everywhere. Cow’s urine is sprinkled in my house every day. But still the fragrance could be felt by
him even in the middle of work in office, in the market; near the temple, while reading religious scripture for the entire
day. My father felt that the fragrance was perhaps emanating due to the sprinkling of essence-water but even after
washing the hands, the fragrance would still be there. Strangely, my mother could not feel the smell of the same
essence.”
Analysis of Anubhuti: I do not possess any Siddhis (supernatural powers) and neither have I ever tried to attain any. Nor
do I have any desire to possess them ever. If my Shree Guru ever granted me some Siddhi for work pertaining to Dharma,
he never told me so. The seekers get such Anubhutis, which can enhance their faith on Guru Tattwa (Guru principle).
The fragrance that his father could smell was a Tarak (benevolent) smell and this kind of Anubhuti is connected to the
Prithvi Tattwa (Earth element).

Now, we will take a look at the Anubhuti of Shri Manish Sehgal from Agra.

“I used to keep reading in the Anubhutis of seekers that Tanuja Didi can read the thoughts in our mind; or when she
feels that one is remembering her fervently; either her presence becomes imperative, or she contacts us over the phone by
herself. On June 1, 2012, I too underwent this experience. I always used to celebrate my birthday according to the English
calendar, after reading Didi’s articles on Facebook, this year, I celebrated my birthday according to Hindi tithi(date) and I was
just thinking that I should send an SMS to Didi that for the first time, I have celebrated my birthday according to the Hindi tithi
and Indian culture. As soon as this thought crossed my mind, Didi contacted me over the cell phone and I was surprised ! Had
Didi learnt about my internal desire? I was feeling really blissful, as if I had received a precious gift without asking for it on the
auspicious day. Let me tell one thing that Didi calls me up once in two months meaning that it is not that Didi keeps calling me
up frequently. I express my gratitude to Didi and pray that may she continue to shower her affection and blessings upon all of
us. Analysis of Anubhuti: Anubhuti is that, which inculcates, or enhances a seeker’s faith on the Guru (Master), God and
spiritual science. The type of Anubhuti that will provide Gati (momentum) to his/her Sadhana (spiritual practice) of a seeker,
God grants the seeker only that kind of Anubhuti. In the third edition of Soham, I had mentioned a speciality of Manish, that
whatever he reads in my articles, he tries to implement it. This is what is known as seeker-hood. Just as the mouth gets
sweetened on eating jaggery (Gurh), similarly performing Dharmacharan (abiding the code of conduct as per Vedic Dharma),
the Grace of Guru (Master) and God is easily appeased and if need be, also grant us Anubhuti accordingly.

5. Spiritual healing vis-a-vis negative energies


Who all can suffer from troubles by negative energies ?

First of all, let me tell you that today entire human race is suffering from the problems afflicted by evil forces. Let’s see it
by making a three-fold classification:

1. Those who do not do spiritual practice.


2. The seekers who do some kind of spiritual practice;
3. Saints.

Today, why are all the three categories suffering ? The condition of those who do not do spiritual practice is the most
pitiable, they are entirely under the control of negative energies .

Today’s semi-clad models, corrupt leaders, homosexual people, rapists, killers, egoistic persons, the Hindus who follow
the western culture blindly, drunkards – all these people are the ones who are most controlled by negative energies, or to
put it in other words, the physical bodies are theirs and the mind and intellect are of negative energies.

In contemporary society, more than 30% of the people are suffering from normal to severe impact of negative energies.
These forces trouble those who do spiritual practice, so that such people are deflected from the path of practice and their
mind may have negative thoughts about dharma, spirituality, saints and Gurus, so that their practice can be disturbed and
the evil forces may take control of such people. In today’s society, more than 50% of good seekers are troubled by
negative energies.

Why do saints experience problems?

The subtle body of the saints becomes one with the unmanifest form of God, implying that their subtle bodies are in
unison with the society . Thus, they too face problems.

How to realise that one faces problems due to negative energies ?

In this connection, a few points should be taken into consideration– if something is happening that is abnormal and is
bad, it is due to negative energies because common people do not possess the ability to transform the normal things into
abnormal . If good things are happening and it’s beyond the mind and intellect to analyse them then it is due to saints or
some positive energies as they only possess this kind of capability. Similarly, if something bad is happening, and if the
intellect cannot comprehend it and despite making physical, intellectual and mental efforts, no special success is being
achieved, it must be understood that it is due to negative energies, be it health-related, connected to relationships, or
income-related.

What are the problems that can be inflicted due to negative energies ?

Depression, suicidal thoughts, excessive anger and in such a rage loss of self-control, lust-filled thoughts
occupying the mind all the time, sleeplessness, excessive sleep, pain in any part of the body and such a pain not
being curable through any medicine, extremely restless mind, perennial losses in business/profession, obstacles
during examinations, family discord at all times, regular miscarriages, incurring heavy financial losses without
any reason, genetic diseases/disorders, being addictive, accidents at frequent intervals and obstacles in job, or
means of livelihood. Gang-rapes, homosexuality, dreaded sexual diseases, all these are caused due to the people
who are possessed by negative energies.

How to safeguard ourselves from negative energies ?

Follow righteous conduct according to the vedic culture and avoid imitating the western culture for the
sake of becoming ‘modern’.

1. Dress up according to Indian culture, remember that dresses pertaining to Bhartiya sanskruti and
hindu dharma provide us protection against evil forces and divine attributes are attracted towards us.
Hence, women should wear ‘saris’ and men should wear Dhoti, kurta, or kurta-pyjama. Women
should not wear male attire. This results in women experiencing problems pertaining to the
reproductive organs.
2. Apply a Tilak on the forehead. This too prevents negative energies from entering our
Adnya chakra (the midpoint between the two eyebrows).
3. Males should sport a Shikha and if the sacred thread ceremony has been done, then wear
a sacred thread too.
4. Ladies should not, even by mistake, either drink or smoke. The reproductive organs of
such ladies become easily prone to attack by evil forces and children born from such ladies suffer
from spiritual problems caused by evil forces since birth.
5. As far as possible, avoid wearing black-coloured clothes. This too causes problems from
evil forces.
6. Avoid eating cooked food from outside, particularly tinned and canned and hotel food. If
consuming food is a necessity, it must be eaten after making a prayer and Naam Jaap (name
chanting).
7. Avoid staying awake after 11 pm.
8. Stay away from tasting any sort of things that can lead to addictions.
9. Instead of non-vegetarianism, turn to vegetarianism.
10. Take a bath with salt water and a spoonful of cow’s urine, followed immediately after by
a normal bath.

11. Avoid deodorants and pungent smells as these have an intense ability to attract evil
forces.
12. Avoid wearing synthetic and leather clothes.
13. Do not devote more time than is necessary to television and internet. Such equipments
project raj-tam and negative vibrations.
14. Avoid watching horror films and serials.
15. The regular use of salt-water treatment destroys the black veil on the mind and intellect
and it helps in concentration and keeping the mind peaceful.
16. Pure and traditional ornaments pertaining to Hindu sanskruti must be worn.
17. While sleeping, the room should not be totally dark.
18. Do Naam Jaap(chanting) as much as possible.
19. Avoid keeping photographs of ancestors in the house.
20. Make efforts to receive the grace of saints and do practice, as recommended by them.
21. A bath, equivalent to a dip in the Ganga or taking a bath in the sea, must be taken at
home. This also reduces the troubles given by evil forces.
22. Efforts must be made regularly to purify the atmosphere of the house. Hence, all
measures for Vaastu Shuddhi (purification of house architecture) must be done on a regular basis.
23. If possible, keep a Desi (Indian breed) cow in the courtyard.
24. Offer a part of your earning towards Dharma related work.
25. Read scriptures and try to implement them in your life.
26. Converse in your own language inside and outside the house. Sanskrut is known as
Devbhasha (language of the Gods). Hence try to learn it yourself and also teach it to the children.
27. Practice Yogasana (yogic postures) and Pranayam regularly. This destroys the black
energy accumulated in our body; and the physical form and Manodeh (mind) is purified to some
extent. This keeps us physically healthy.
28. Avoid listening to film songs and especially western music for long duration. Due to
this, black energy enters our body.
29. Women should keep long hair and not grow nails. Women should not leave their hair
untied.
30. Do chanting 15 minutes before sleeping and seek a protective armour from the
worshipped deity before sleeping.
31. To remove your faults, note down your mistakes in a diary on a daily basis and make
efforts to ensure that the same type of mistake is not repeated.
32. Completely avoid unnecessary talking, abusing etc

6. Clarification of doubts
Q.1) Why shouldn’t photographs of ancestors be kept in the house? - Reena Dixit, Guwahati

With any manifest form (roop), word, touch, smell, taste and energy is concomitant. Hence, if ancestors do not get
Gati, that picture begins to project black energy in the house. Thus, within some time, the vibrations of the house get
disturbed and several types of problems are caused. Thus, we should not put up photographs of ancestors. Only
saints can tell us which ancestors have got Gati and which ancestors have not. Therefore, rather than flowing along
with emotions, Dharmacharan (abiding by the code of conduct as per Vedic Dharma) must be abided. Many a time,
if the ancestors have got Gati and if they are in Pitru Lok (one of the nether worlds), or in any other Lok (world) and
if we keep looking at their picture again and again and by remembering them again and again, they have to come
down from the subtle world to the earth. At times, this becomes very tough for some ancestors. Thus, by doing so,
we unknowingly create hurdles in their onward journey. For this reason, sometimes they also curse us. Thus, the real
tribute to those who have passed away is by treading the virtuous path of conduct shown by them and doing
appropriate Sadhana.

Q.2) I heard in an audio clip in your website www.vedicupasana.com that photographs of ancestors should
not be kept before the sight or in place of worship. I have kept the photographs of my departed parents in my
drawing room, if the photographs are to be removed from the drawing room, where should they be kept and
what to do with those photographs? - Anurag Singh, Kanpur

The best solution for the photographs would be to immerse them in clean water, and retain a scanned copy of the
photographs for future records or if u want to see them sometimes or if you have to show them to the next
generation.If your mind is not prepared to that extent, wrap the photographs in a white cloth and keep a photograph
of Lord Shiva between the photographs and keep the photographs in an almirah. On the day of Shraddha (annual
ritual for departed souls) or in Pitru Paksha (annual fortnight of the ancestors), you can take them out from the
almirah, garland them and after the performance of Shraddha, wrap them again in the white cloth and keep them
back in the almirah.

7. Efforts made by seekers for spiritual progress


Efforts of a seeker Shri Satish Kulkarni of Karnavati (Ahmedabad) at Vyashti Sadhana (spiritual
practice at an individual plane) and Samashti Sadhana (service of spreading spirituality at societal plane) are
extremely praiseworthy!
I happened to go to Karnavati (Ahmedabad) for the first time in February 2012 and through a Facebook
friend, my three-day sojourn had been arranged at the residence of Shri Satish Kulkarni. Satish reached the
airport, along with Shri Kshitij Dhanak to receive me. Looking at the Bhav of both of them, I felt as if both of
them have been doing Sadhana and have known me for years, whereas I was meeting both of them for the first
time. When I reached Satish’s place, I learnt that he has been a worshipper of Brahmaleen (the saint who had
left His physical body and is in unison with the Supreme Principle) saint Gondawalekar Maharaj. The Bhav of
both the husband and wife was good, but their house had problems caused by negative energies (during the
present times, 70% of the seekers suffer from medium-to-severe level troubles caused by negative energies). I
told them 12 points pertaining to Vyashti Sadhana(individual spiritual practice). Both the husband and wife
started following and implementing all the 12 points seriously and with continuity. As a result, they started
experiencing Anubhutis. Some years ago, his wife had done Sadhana under our Shree Guru; but owing to
unavoidable circumstances, she could not continue. In the company of her husband, she blissfully resumed her
Sadhana. On February 18, I heard the sound of Om from the place of worship in Satish’s house. Initially, I felt
that perhaps he might have switched on chanting on some equipment; but when for the third time I heard the
chanting and began looking for the equipment, then I perceived that the subtle sound was that of Naad
(primordial divine sound); that was emanating from the photographs of saints and deities in the place of
worship.
The virtues of obedience and perseverance in Satish are admirable. He often has to travel to other
districts in connection with his official responsibilities. Despite all this, he has maintained continuity in all
efforts at spiritual solutions and chanting.

Shri Satish Kulkarni

Since the day he has understood the importance of Dharma Prasaar (spreading spirituality), he makes an effort
to tell all his near and dear ones, friends and acquaintances about Sadhana. His affection and gratefulness
towards the friend through whom he got in touch with me is an evidence of his seeker-hood. When I told him
and his friend (Shri Kshitij Dhanak) about organising a public discourse, both of them gave evidence of their
wisdom and with extreme ability, organised the programme.in a very efficient way.

When I asked him to take over the Seva (service) of hosting the programme, he got ready for that too. And
he rendered that service also without too many mistake as he had taken extra efforts to prepare the script at
home and rehearse it. Due to his accurate planning, when I reached the venue just 10 minutes before the
programme, all the preparations had already been made. Normally, seekers make many mistakes in organising
the discourse for the first time; but in the discourse at Karnavati, upon making an effort to spot mistakes, I could
find only four mistakes. Three of these four mistakes were pointed out by Satish himself after the discourse.
Merely in four months, through his Vyashti Sadhana and Samashti Sadhana, he has attained 1% (one per cent)
spiritual progress. He has also prepared an Excel Sheet to maintain continuity in Vyashti Sadhana. I am
attaching it along with Soham on your email ID. Perhaps his efforts might provide inspiration to all of you.

8. Anubhutis during Dharma Prasaar and dharmayatra


Soham – the spiritual magazine is a medium of Dharma Prasaar (spreading spirituality). Today, we will take a
look at the Anubhuti of the seeker from its editorial department, Shri Himank Kothiyal, who looks after the proof reading
of the magazine in Hindi and also performs the Seva of its translation into English.
“On 31.5.2012, when I sat down to perform the Seva of the 9th edition of Soham at 7 pm, I possibly got up in
between to wash my face just once and went to sleep only after completing the Seva at 2.30 a.m. However, despite doing
the Seva for 8-1/2 hours, neither did I have any discomfort in the eyes, nor any body-ache. Sitting down for so long and
completing the Seva would not have been possible without divine blessings. Otherwise, sitting in front of the computer
continuously for five hours (remaining 3-1/2 hours of Seva of translation was done with pen and paper) would have been
no easy task for me .
Every day, I perform Puja (ritualistic worship) during mornings and evenings without fail. If I do not do so, there
is a feeling of guilt for I have been doing this since my childhood. Until I have to go out of town, I do not allow this
sequence to break. However, in performing the Seva of Soham 9, the sequence of performing the Puja broke for the first
time. Yet, there was no guilt in the mind for I felt that this Seva was no less than a Puja. Now I am always waiting as to
when Tanuja Didi will be sending the next Seva.”
Analysis of Anubhuti: Performing any Seva of Dharma Prasaar gives bliss. The importance of chanting is 5%, that of
Satsang (transition period) is 30% and the importance of Seva is 100%. Due to the Chaitanya (divine consciousness) in
performing the Seva, Himank ji did not experience any physical discomfort. Being above the spiritual level of 50%, he
derives bliss in performing the Seva and this is in accordance with his spiritual level.
Performing Sandhya as per Karm-Kaand (ritualistic worship) is Vyashti Sadhana, meaning it leads to our spiritual
progress. Contributing one’s mite in performing Seva of Dharma Prasaar is Samashti Sadhana. In Kaliyug (age of Kali),
the importance of Sadhana is 30% and importance of Samashti Sadhana is 70%. Thus, Samashti Sadhana leads to
spiritual progress and also grants bliss.
Samashti Sadhana means serving Nirgun Guru (Formless Master) that is serving the Almighty; so in performing this
Seva, if at times Vyashti Sadhana cannot be performed, it does not lead to incurring any sin. However, regularity in
Samashti Sadhana can only be maintained when the foundation of Vyashti Sadhana is profound.

At times, there is a time-limit while performing Samashti Sadhana, like bringing out Soham punctually is imperative.
Thus, if one has to forego Vyashti Sadhana, the amount of bliss remains the same. As per the level of Himank ji, mental
Sadhana, meaning chanting and Seva is qualified Sadhana. Thus, through the medium of this Seva, God took him to the
next level. In spirituality, when we complete one level of Sadhana, we proceed to the next level. And when we reach the
next level, there is no feeling of guilt, but an experience of bliss.

9. Guru Poornima special

• 3rd July is the gurupoornima day, the most important festival for all the gurubhakts (devotees
of a guru ) !
• Gurupoornima Day - the day to offer our gratitude to our guru !
• On this day the guru-
guru-principle is thousand time more active !
• The seekers get one thousand times more benefit from the offerings made to the guru at
physical, mental and monetary plane.
• Whatever we offer to the Divine Sadguru is insufficient and mean as He gives bliss which is
beyond the words to describe and also help us progress spiritually .

and unmanifest forms of guru, is the best medium to offer our gratitude

My shreeguru knew I love to spread spirituality

Once in 1997 when I was returning after His Darshan, my omniscient Guru simply said while bidding farewell –
“You start taking discourses.” Even before my meeting Him, whatever little knowledge I had of spirituality, I used to
tell it to my friends and acquaintances. He was aware of this attribute of mine. Thus, He permitted me to take discourses.
The usual system in Sanatan Sanstha (my Shreeguru is the founder) is that first of all the holy text written by Shreeguru
– ‘An introduction to the science of spirituality’is given to a seeker – and the seeker is asked to take discourses from it,
so that while explaining the subject to the people, the seeker too is able to understand the fundamental topicsof spirituality
and is able to practice them in life. However, the first book that I was asked to take discourse from was – “Shishya’
Granth” ( Disciple). This book helped a lot in refining the inner pupilage in me – by seriously studying every issue
explained in the book. I started to practice the tenets in my life by offering my body, mind, intellect and wealth for
spreading spritualty the sole aim of my Shreeguru’s mission . Within a few months, I made my goal that I have to
become a disciple – by attaining 55% spiritual level. What is 55% spiritual level? To understand this point, it is
necessary to understand the concept of spiritual level. I will tell you about this topic in brief. This issue has been dealt
with, in detail, in the holy text – “An Introduction to the science of spirituality” written by Shreeguru

It is necessary to know the concept of spiritual level to understand my memoir .Hence, I will explain it in brief.
The whole Universe has been created by God, thus, living, non-living and other beings possess some amount of Sattvikta
(purity), non-living things have 1-2%, animate plant life has 5%, and animal kingdom has about 10% of Sattvikta and to
be born as human being, a minimum of 20% Sattvikta is required and the saints who have achieved communion with
Godare at 100% spiritual level. A person having 20% level is akin to an atheist and has no interest in spirituality, deities
or Dharma. At 30% level, a person starts doing regular worship following rituals, visiting pilgrimages, reading hymns.
On achieving35% level, a little interest in spiritualism in the real sense starts to get awakened and the seeker tries to start
some spiritual practice. On reaching 40% level, the seeker tries to start chanting mentally and on achieving 45% level,
interest in spiritualism begins to increase and from many spiritual practices, the seeker’s starts concentraiting in one type
of spiritual practice . On realizing 50% level, the seeker starts giving more importance to spiritual life, in comparison to
practical life, and starts performing spiritual acts like attending discourses and performing service on a regular basis along
with this worldly responsibilites. At a level of 55%, a true Guru enters his life and he starts to dedicate 55% of his body,
mind and money to the Guru for any spirituality-related activities. At 60% spiritual level, service in the true sense begins.
At a level lower than this, services are offered by understanding spirituality at intellectual level. At 70% level, the seeker
attains the status of a saint and at 80% is placed on the level of a Sadguru and at 90% - ‘Paratpar Pad’ is attained.

After understanding the level-wise concept of spiritual practice, I began to sacrifice body-mind-money
accordingly with a view to attain the disciple status – which meant aiming for a 55% level. By God’s grace, just after one
year, on July 21, 1998, I got the permission to become a full time spiritual practioner under the guidance of my
Shreeguru. I was sent for spreading spirituality to Faridabad in Haryana . In August 1998, I was thinking that His
Holiness had said in one of his discourses that every seeker should try to first reach the level of 55%, so I have – so I felt,
now what? Gurus are omniscient. A confirmation of this will be reinforced by the following sequence of events. Only
two days had passed, when this thought had crossed my mind, when a senior seeker handed over a book written by His
Holiness Dr. Athavale - “Gurukrupayog”(Path Of guru’s grace) and said that it is a new book, tomorrow, this is to be
submitted for obtaining the ISBN no. (International Standard Book Number), so if you want to have a look at it, you can
do so. I started to read the book at night, when first of all a topic caught my attention and that was – “The level of a Guru
and accordingly – the qualifying level of the disciples”.

It mentioned that to be a disciple of a saint at 90% level – or more, the disciple’s level must be at least 80%. The
book mentions several instances which make it clear that His Holiness Gurudev is a saint at a level above 90% and thus
one with a level of 80% can become His true disciple. Having read it, my heart sank for a few moments, as it meant that
to become a disciple of my Guru, not a level of 55%, but that of 80% level must be targeted.

Since my childhood, I have always had a habit of working with fixed targets in mind and for the last few days, it
had been crossing my mind as to what should be my next goal in spiritual life . I immediately understood the reason
behind His reminding me about the issue. From that day onwards, I decided that now I would have to make efforts to
attain the next target, for becoming the disciple of His Holiness Gurudev was the sole objective of life. His Holiness too
had recognized this goal of mine. The reality too remains that Gurus provide the goal – and it is only they who get it
accomplished, we are but a mere medium…..!

He too had identified in reality my attitude and thus, set a goal for me and I too from that year onwards, began
making efforts in that direction and a time came, when I became engrossed in spreading spirituality without a viewpoint
of spiritual progress. It was then that my Guru reminded me of my goal through the ‘subtle’ medium and also provided
me guidance to move ahead in this direction.

He gave the order to preach spirituality instead to serving the manifest form

In August 1997, I had gone to Sion Ashram in Mumbai for a ‘Darshan’ of His Holiness. After His ‘Darshan’ and
guidance, and I was returning home in bliss, when His Holiness began asking me – “How much time do you take to come
from your home to the Ashram?” I said “One hour and twenty minutes” and “How much time does it take to return?” I
said – “While returning, night sets in, thus, there is less traffic, so it takes an hour ” He further asked – “How much time
do you stay here?” I said – “Generally One and a half hour”……So now you tell me, how many people can you educate
about spiritual practice in the same span of time? I replied – “I can surely tell 40 people about spiritualty in this much
time frame.” He then said – “Don’t come here from now onwards, stay there and tell the people about spiritual practice.”
I had been associated with him for just four months. Hearing this, I started my returning back home, a bit disappointed.
Coming downstairs from the Ashram, I asked my Guru subtly – “If I don’t meet you, how will I learn about spiritual
practice and our scriptures (Shastras)? How can I make progress in spiritualism”? Then, He subtly told me – “Wherever
you are, I will teach you everything at that very place itself.” I said how will my gross service be fulfilled?

He replied – “You have completed service of the manifest form in your previous birth. Now in this birth, you
have to do only service unto the unamnifest form (ie. Spreading spirituality). The fact is that in the last 12 years of my
spiritual practice, I had the good fortune of serving the saints only on just two occasions for two days each and since that
day, perceiving my Master in every seeker, I have been rendering as much service as I can. That day onwards, He keeps
educating me through various mediums, scriptures or Sanatan Prabhat, or subtly, even before I ask Him

He clarified all my doubts through His silence !!

Since my childhood, several questions used to pop up in my mind about spirituality and Dharma and I could not
find a satisfactory answer to them. Several times I used to ask questions from my father to get the answers – and he on
his part, used to make efforts to resolve all my doubts. My father was a gentle, householder, with seeker-like instincts.
He was a devotee of Goddess Durga and before I had an audience with my Guru, he was my ideal. At times, when I
would not be satisfied with the answers given by him, he would read my inner thoughts – and would try to make the
answers more evident. One day after I asked him a question, he said with simplicity – “My dear, increase your devotion.
One day, someone will come and will resolve all your queries.” His words came true, my Shree Guru entered my
life……and in reality, all my doubts were resolved.

I had gone to Sanatan Sanstha for the resolution of my doubts. However, after having an audience with my Shree
Guru, no doubts remained in my mind. According to the method of spiritual practice followed at the organization, our
leading seekers used to visit the centre where we were serving, to guide us in our spiritual practice. One problem that I
used to face was what questions to ask from them.

The day I had my first audience with my Guru, questions stopped coming to my mind since that day – and if
questions did creep up, I used to receive satisfactory answers to them through some medium or the other spontaneously.
Thus, asking questions used to be a problem for me. Adiguru Shankaracharya has said in Dakshinmurti hymn – “Gurostu
Maunam Vyakhyanam, Shishyastu Chhinnasanshayah” – meaning the Sadguru taught his disciples through silence and
resolved their doubts. By God’s grace, I had been experiencing the feeling of this element and I had a first-hand
experience of the authenticity of the elements mentioned in the scriptures.

In May 2004, I was in the company of His Holiness Gurudev at Ramanathi Ashram, situated in Goa, (being a
Hindi-speaking person, the area of propagation of spirituality for me used to be north India – and once a year, we had the
opportunity to go for a few days to Goa, where our Shree Guru used to live). One day it suddenly came to my mind as to
why questions are not cropping up in my mind – is it that my curiosity to learn spiritualism is dwindling?

Fortunately, when this thought came to me, I was near Shree Guru’s room. I was filled with self-remorse, for
there is an adage of Baba (His Holiness Bhaktaraj Maharaj – that is the Master of His Holiness Gurudev) - - “The curious
one is the who deserve Absolute knowledge.” I felt that realizing God was my goal, but the basic virtue of a seeker –
curiosity is not there in me, so how will my spiritual progress take place? I thought – “I must go to His Holiness and tell
Him of my shortcoming.” Hesitatingly, I told Him my apprehensions.” His Holiness smiled and replied – “Anyway, it is
good now you can learn beyond words.” This eloquence kept ringing in my ears for long.

A few days after this incident, it struck me that every time I used to think of a question to ask from His Holiness,
but every time I would get the answer to all my questions either from within, or through some medium – or the other even
before I could ask the question.

10. Why is it so in Vedic Sanatan Dharma?

A. Why should Arti be performed both, in the morning and evening?

Arti is meant to be performed at sunrise and sunset. At sunrise the raja-tama predominant atmosphere
present throughout the night is destroyed and the absolute fire element frequencies of Deities arrive in the
universe. Hence, Arti is to be offered at sunrise to welcome them. The 'tarak Chaitanya' (saviour form of
Chaitanya) transmitted during the arrival of the frequencies of Deities at sunrise is to be welcomed by the
worshipper through the medium of the Arti, whereas at sunset, the Arti is performed to destroy the raja-tama
frequencies and to invoke the Deities' 'marak Chaitanya' (destroyer form of Chaitanya). That is why Arti should
be performed twice - at sunrise and at sunset.

B. On waving the Arti platter in front of a Deity: Why should an Arti platter be waved in a full circle in
front of the Deity?
When offering Arti, using a lamp with five wicks (also called pancharti), the platter containing this lit lamp
should be waved in a full circle in front of the Deity. This results in a speedy circular movement of sattva frequencies
emitted by the flame of the lamp. These sattva frequencies then get converted gradually into raja frequencies. They
appear like ripples in the water. A suraksha kavach (protective armour) of these frequencies is formed around the
embodied soul of the worshipper offering the Arti and is known as a 'Tarang kavach' (literally 'ripple armour'). The more
the spiritual emotion of the worshipper offering the Arti, longer this armour lasts. As his sattva component is enhanced, he
is able to absorb more Divine frequencies from the Universe. This increases his spiritual emotion and he perceives the
reflection of his soul in the form of a blue spot of light (also known as Atmabindu) in front of him and a ripple of raja
frequencies emanating from this Atmabindu.

C. Why should the names of various Gods be acclaimed after performing Kapoor Arati (Arati performed with
camphor)?

‘Udghosh (acclamation)’ means the intense call of the embodied soul from its navel . Whatever can’t be achieved
through the entire process of aarti can be achieved by the pronouncing the names of deities at the end of the aarti .
