PREFACE
This standard was prepared by the Associations Committee on Electrical Equipment for Hazardous Locations for the guidance of manufacturers, users, statutory authorities and associated interests, and for use with the SAA Wiring Rules. It prescribes requirements in respect of the design, construction and marking of electrostatic paint and powder sprayguns and associated apparatus and includes a section on testing. In its terminology, definitions and general treatment of the subject, this standard takes into account a similar standard issued by the British Approvals Service for Electrical Equipment in Flammable Atmospheres (BASEEFA), viz BASEEFA Standard SFA 3010, Electrostatic Paint and Powder Spray Guns. Acknowledgement is made of the assistance received from this source. The standard requires reference to the following standards: AS 1020 SAA Static Electricity Code AS 1021 Protection by Purging of Electrical Equipment for Explosive Atmospheres AS 1593 Increased Safety of Electrical Equipment for Explosive Atmospheres AS 1825 Pressurized Enclosure of Electrical Equipment for Explosive Atmospheres AS 1826 Special Protection of Electrical Equipment for Explosive Atmospheres AS 1829 Intrinsically Safe Electrical Apparatus for Explosive Atmospheres AS 1939 Classification of Degrees of Protection Provided by Enclosures for Electrical Equipment AS 2210 Safety Footwear AS 3000 Part 1SAA Wiring Rules AS C98 Flameproof Enclosure of Electrical Equipment for Explosive Atmospheres AS C100 Approval and Test Specification for Definitions and General Requirements for Electrical Materials and Equipment BS 2050 Electrical Resistance of Conductive and Antistatic Products Made from Flexible Polymeric Material BS 5451 Electrically Conducting and Antistatic Rubber Footwear

SECTION 1. SCOPE AND DEFINITIONS

1.1 SCOPE. This standard specifies requirements for the construction and testing of handheld and hand-operated electrostatic paint or powder sprayguns and associated apparatus, which are used to spray paint which may give off flammable gases or vapours, or to spray powders which are liable to give rise to a dust explosion. It also applies to handheld and hand-operated electrostatic guns used for spraying flock onto surfaces coated with flammable adhesives, and to automatic guns which are part of fixed apparatus. The standard includes appendices which recommend conditions of use with flammable paints or powders, and which apply without prejudice to any statutory requirements applying to paint or powder spray areas and to the use of flammable liquids. 1.2 DEFINITIONS. For the purpose of this standard, the following definitions apply. 1.2.1 Explosive gas/air mixturea mixture of combustible gas or vapour with air, under atmospheric conditions, in which, after ignition, combustion spreads throughout the unconsumed mixture. 1.2.2 Explosive dust/air mixturea mixture of combustible dust, fibres or flyings with air, under atmospheric conditions, in which, after ignition, combustion spreads throughout the unconsumed mixture. 1.2.3 Hazardthe presence, or the risk of the presence, of an explosive mixture of a combustible material with air. 1.2.4 Hazardous areaan area in which explosive mixtures of combustible materials are or may be expected to be present in quantities such as to require special precautions for the construction and use of electrical apparatus. 1.2.5 Flameproof enclosure (Ex d)an enclosure for electrical equipment which will withstand, without damage, an explosion of a prescribed flammable gas or vapour within the enclosure and prevent the transmission
