The common twobanded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris) is an important fish in the marine ecosystems of the NW Atlantic and Mediterranean. In southern Portugal it is a major fishery resource being targeted mainly by the artisanal fleets Fish ecologists have used geochemical values in otoliths to examine habitat use, migration, and population connectivity for decades. However, it remains difficult to determine an unambiguous dietary
These results are congruent both for the endemic species, S. aiensis and for the cosmopolitan species. Finally, we found that, for S. lagocephalus, the cosmopolitan species, New Caledonian samples are close to western Vanuatu samples, the latter two being well differentiated from the eastern central Vanuatu samples. (Gadidae) All measured otolith morphometric parameters (length, width and mass) were linear with fish age. The linear model explained between 61.3% and 69.0% of the variation in age. The most precise age estimations of analysed population were obtained from the otolith mass, followed by the otolith width and length Comparison of the otolith core chemistry utilised Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca, Mn/Ca and Mg/Ca and Zn/Ca. LDFA for the otolith core chemistry also achieved accurate classification for samples from Sesimbra (73%), but there was high overlap of otolith chemistry between samples from Faro and Sagres (47 and 43% classification accuracy respectively)

Herring along the west coast of the British Isles are managed and assessed as a series of discrete stocks. The relationship between the spawning components, mixed (feeding) aggregations, and juveniles in nursery areas for these stocks was modelled by discriminant

Carbon isotope values in otolith and muscle samples were highly correlated within and among coastal habitats. Moreover, d13C values of otolith AAs provided a purely
analysis and integrated stock mixture analysis based on otolith elemental composition data Stable isotopes of d18O and d13C in sagittal otolith carbonates were used to determine the stock structure of the polynemid Eleutheronema tetradactylum (Shaw) across tropical northern Australia, where this species is an important component of inshore commercial and recreational fisheries

The Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios of a subsample of 14 otoliths showed that half of the fish killed were Acoustic estuarine residents, and the rest survey, originated from marine and Laboratory freshwater habitats. The multiple tested. causes involved in this fish kill implied that Sampel herring additional unknown factors (C. harengus) influenced the mullet populations on a large scale and induced them to move quickly and gather at this estuary

Results suggest that most west coast herring belong to interconnected populations subject to mixing and that populations are not discrete, so the current practice of assessments based on

Accurate knowledge of fish age and growth is crucial for species conservation and management of exploited marine stocks. In exploited species, age estimation based on otolith reading is routinely used for building growth curves that are used to implement fishery management models..

The significant differences in the isotopic signatures of E. tetradactylum demonstrated that there is unlikely to be substantial movement of fish between these locations. The spatial separation of these populations indicates a complex fine spatial scale stock structure across northern Australia, with at least 11 stocks or management units present. The population subdivision of E. tetradactylum was evident along expansive stretches of open beach systems and within coastal embayments with no physical barriers such as headlands.

The results provided evidence that growth parameters inferred with VBGF must be used with high caution. Hence, VBGF turned to be among the less accurate for growth prediction irrespective of the dataset and its fit to the whole population, the juvenile or the adult datasets provided different growth parameters.
