Annie Oakley's gun $143,400 at auction

A shotgun that once belonged to Western sharpshooter and entertainer Annie Oakley sold for more than $143,000 at an auction in Dallas. The trove of about 100 of the icon's items headlining Heritage Auctions' "Legends of the Wild West" event brought in nearly $520,000, according to the auction house. The items included several guns, her Stetson hat, photographs and letters. Oakley's great-grandnieces put up the items and had inherited them from their mother, who died in 2009.

1792 Silver Center Cent Makes $1.15 Million at Heritage Auctions $29 Million+ Central States Event
In an auction that made international news, one of the first coins ever struck at the United States Mint an experimental 1792-dated copper cent with a small silver plug in its center realized $1,150,000 as the centerpiece of the Central States Numismatic Society (CSNS) Platinum Night Auction, conducted in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg, IL,. Prices include 17.5% Buyers Premium. There are only 14 known surviving silver-center cents, and this is the third finest known, said Todd Imhof, Executive Vice President of Heritage Auctions. In 1974, this same coin sold for $105,000 and now it brought $1.15 million. The coin was sold to a dealer from Southern California, Mr. Kevin Lipton, who was representing a group of investors. The Heritage CSNS Auction, altogether, realized more than $29 million, with a sell-through rate by value of 91.66%. Collectors went after the offerings in PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC CAC , among the finest Proof examples surviving, which brought $207,000. An 1898 $20 PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC CAC, tied with three other coins for Finest Certified one of just 75 pieces struck, and one of just 35-40 known to still exist flirting with the $200,000 mark by realizing $195,500 after spirited bidding. A 1900 $20 PR67 Cameo NGC, CAC, tied for Numerically Finest Graded 1900-dated double eagle, was the subject of intense collector interest, to the tune of $195,500, a price that was matched by an 1887 $20 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS, CAC, Proof-Only issue, Ex: Dr. Loewinger, sole Finest Certified. Further highlights include, but certainly are not limited to: 1863 $2 1/2 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC, CAC: Realized: $195,500. 1836 $2 1/2 PR64 Cameo PCGS Secure, CAC: Realized: $195,500. 1921 $20 MS63 PCGS: Realized: $178,250. 1897 $20 PR67 Cameo NGC: Realized: $161,000. MOUNT CRAWFORD, Va. A pattern-molded and engraved sugar bowl and cover, attributed to Bakewell, Page & Bakewell and made circa 1820-1835, soared to $8,625 at an auction dedicated to 18th and 19th century glass and lighting held May 19. The bowl and cover were the top lot of the 882 items sold.

this auction with particular energy, resulting in superb overall prices realized, said Greg Rohan, President of Heritage Auctions. While the gold market has been up and down in the last few months, there was no lethargy at CSNS. After the 1792 cent, the top lots of the auction were dominated by high-grade, rare late 19th Century American gold, with a superb Gem Proof Cameo 1885 $20 PR67 NGC, CAC leading the waywith a price realized of $241,500, followed by an immaculate 1899 $20

Rare letter in English by Napoleon sells for $404,757

A rare letter in English written by Napoleon Bonaparte -- and replete with errors -- fetched $406,445 at auction. The one-page letter, dated March 9, 1816, penned by Napoleon during his post-Waterloo exile on the South Atlantic island of Saint Helena, was one of just three known in the world. Addressed to the Count of Las Cases, Napoleon's companion in exile, the letter was acquired by the private Museum of Letters and Manuscripts in Paris and originally estimated to fetch just $75,000 to $100,000. In his "Memorial of Saint Helena", Las Cases wrote about how Napoleon began in March 1816 to correspond with him in English in order to practice the language of his jailers that he had begun learning a few weeks earlier. The Count also wrote in particular about the auctioned letter, saying: "The emperor did not sleep that night -- during his insomnia, he decided to write me a new letter in English. "He sent it sealed to me, I corrected his errors, and replied to him, in English also, by mail. "He understood the letter, and that convinced him of his progress and proved to him that he could, completely, correspond in his new language." Despite Las Cases encouraging words, Napoleon's writing required some guesswork. After his defeat to the British at the 1815 Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon was imprisoned and then exiled to Saint Helena where he died in 1821 age 51.

Mutant Ninja Turtles Illustration Brings $71,700 At Auction

The first-ever full artwork of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird the illustration that launched one of the most successful character franchises in history sold for $71,700 on Friday, May 11, at Heritage Auctions in Dallas as part of a Vintage Comics & Comic Art Auction. It sold to an anonymous buyer. The drawing was consigned by Turtles Co-Creator Kevin Eastman, who drew it with Laird one night in late November, 1983. Eastman has designated an undisclosed percentage of profits from the auction proceeds to benefit The Hero Initiative, a non-profit he is active with that provides a financial safety net for comic artists and writers (www.heroinitiative.org). What an incredibly exciting week this has been! The Turtles have been blessed with the best fans on the planet, so I chose this event to make available personal historical TMNT items for those really hardcore supporters but WHOA what a response! wrote Eastman in a statement to the auction house. My many, many, thanks to all the fans that have given me the best job in the world, and for their love for a great, goofy, bunch of green guys that just wanted to be normal teenagers Mutant Ninja ones anyway!

A private island of 1.4 acre on Florida's Caloosahatchee River, has been put up for auction for an estimated price of $42,000

The small, densely-wooded island in Fort Myers, Florida, is a 30 second boat ride away from the mainland and is up for sale for just four days as part of an online auction. The island boasts of 'breathtaking 360 degree riverfront views and proximity

to luxury waterfront estate homes,' people who buy it would also need a substantial amount of spare cash as the land has no buildings or utilities. Under current zoning laws, the highest bidder will be able to build a single family home on the island, along with other facilities such as a boat house or dock.
