Car Accident Discussion Questions


1. In real conversation, short answers are often used with:

sure, as a matter of fact, to tell the truth, and Im afraid.


2. For example: Can you drive? -- I sure can.
or: As a matter of fact, I can. or: Im afraid I cant.

3. Note that sure goes between the pronoun and verb. 4. Use sure for yes answers. Use Im afraid for no answers. Use As a matter of fact.. and To tell the truth.. with either.
Instructions: Interview your partner. Use the expressions above in your answers.

1. Can you drive? 2. Do you have a BC drivers license? 3. Do you have a car? 4. What kind of car is it? 5. Did you drive in your country? 6. How does driving here compare with driving in your country? 7. Have you ever had a car accident?
Where did it happen? When was it? What happened? Was anyone injured? Whose fault was it?

Write a page telling about a real car accident.

B. Listen and answer the following: (You may have to listen several times.) 1. When did the accident happen? 2. Where was Pam headed? 3. What were the roads like? Why? 4. What was the first sign an accident had happened? 5. Whose fault was it? 6. Were there any injuries? Who was hurt? 7. How much damage was there? 8. What did the drivers do before exchanging information? 9. Who did Pam call to report the accident to? 10. Who did she make an appointment with? 11. Why did she go to the police station? 12. What did the estimator tell her? 13. Where did Pam get her car repaired? 14. Why did she have a lousy day? 15. Why was she lucky? 16. Will her insurance rate go up? Why/why not? C. You have a good point, but You may be right but I'm not so sure I agree. I don't entirely agree. I'm afraid I don't agree. I couldn't disagree more.* No way*. (*very strong) If you ask me I think so too. I would say I agree with you. In my opinion You're absolutely right. As far as I'm That's what I think too. concerned I'm with you. It seems to me Definitely./Exactly. Personally I think I couldn't agree more. Personally I feel/believe 1. Pam called 911. 2. If you phone ICBC*, you don't need to report it to the police. 3. The other driver got upset at Pam. 4. It isn't always a good idea to give the other driver your ID. 5. Pam's boss was upset at her for coming in late. 6. Only one driver has to report the accident. 7. Pam wasn't driving defensively*. (* carefully, watching the other drivers) 8. Most places report accidents differently. 9. If the other driver offers to pay for the accident under the table*, Pam shouldn't report it. (* without telling the authorities) 10. Car repairs are very expensive here. 11. Pam called her husband right after* the accident. (* immediately after) 12. Pam phoned ICBC before she called her boss. 13. Most drivers are very honest. 14. Car accidents are a big headache even if it isn't your fault.
