The cost of having a cardiac surgery done in Fiji by visiting surgical teams is almost three times lower than the cost of surgery done in Australia and New Zealand via private insurance. This was revealed in a study undertaken for the Ministry of Health by Centre for Health Information Policy and Systems Research (CHIPSR) through a Fiji Health Sector Support Program (FHSSP) grant. The study said cardiac treatment via a visiting team costs $17,615.15 while private insurance evacuation cost was $51,547.54. Ministry of Health spokesman Peni Namotu said the study was a comparative analysis undertaken by the Fiji National University which had put the Health Ministry in a good position to secure better and economical cardiac treatment for Fiji. "It therefore provides a platform for future research for better and economical cardiac treatment for Fijians," he said in a statement. "The study has tried to ascertain the costs incurred due to cardiac treatment via three modes of health treatment delivery: via overseas evacuation through the Ministry of Health, via a visiting cardiac team and via overseas evacuation through private health insurance," he said. "Findings of the report have revealed that cardiac treatment via health visiting teams is the cheapest of the three options which is $17,615.15, however, limited by need for intensive and anesthetic care. "It is however not very much different from costs incurred by the Ministry of Health (MOH) for overseas evacuation which is $21,723.79 for a wider array of services possible. "Private insurance incurs the most cost, whereby treatment in New Zealand or Australia cost $F51, 547.54 and India cost $26,641.28." Mr Namotu said the study provided an insight of the costs incurred and the quality of treatment provided by the three modes of health treatment delivery.
Participants at the zumba display at TappooCity's walkway in Suva Hundreds of people were attracted to TappooCity walkway last weekend with the loud energetic music and people in fitness attire dancing to the beat. The one-hour long display was initiated by Tappoo City to help promote its zumba fitness program. "We have zumba workouts every Friday at level six of TappooCity and this display was basically to just let the people of Suva know about it," said Tappoo Group events co-ordinator Kaushik Ram. "Since Suva is being promoted as a healthy city, we wanted to let people know that Tappoo Group is doing what it can to help promote healthy living." Mr Ram said the response from the crowd was excellent with people coming in numbers to enquire about their weekly fitness schedule. "We had people from the market; shopping centres, in buses and those walking along the streets come and witness our display. It was very encouraging. "Zumba is for everyone, age is no barrier. It is a good way to get fit while enjoying and jiving to good music."
Media Outlets To Adhere To Code, Ethics: AG

All media outlets in Fiji must adhere to their code of ethics and practice, emphasizes Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. Sayed-Khaiyums response comes after there were speculations that Fiji TV Limited's licence would not be renewed. And this, according to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its partner the Pacific Freedom Forum (PFF) was due to a report by a Fiji TV news that had interviews with the deposed Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and the Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry responding to an earlier story in which Constitutional Commissioner Taufa Vakatale had blamed politicians of the past for Fijis
current state. The report stated that the Fijian government had stopped Fiji TV from covering members of the opposition. The order was not to broadcast comments or pictures of people including Qarase, Chaudhry and Felix Anthony. However Sayed-Khaiyum in a statement said he met with the chairman of Fiji TV Limited Isoa Koloumaira on May 25, this year. As far as news reporting was concerned, Fiji TV, like all other media organisations, needed to adhere to the Media Code of Ethics and Practice and be balanced and fair, not just in form but in substance, reiterated SayedKhaiyum.
FHL Increases Stake In Blue Lagoon Cruises

Fijian Holdings Limited has increased its stake in the Blue Lagoon Cruises from 70 to 93 per cent. A statement said this was executed through a Debt Capitalisation process which was resolved at a recent Extra Ordinary general meeting of shareholders of Blue Lagoon Cruises Ltd. FHL group chairman Iowane Naiveli said this is a strategic move by FHL. Following its original acquisition in 2001 at a cost of $FJ9.54 million, FHL has made steady loan advances which accumulated to $9.7m by May, 2012. Through a debt conversion, new fully paid up shares were issued to FHL for the value of $FJ3m. Currently BLC owns and operates the Mystique Princess and Fiji Princess along the Yasawa Groups and visits Lau Group three times a year. Acting group CEO Nouzab Fareed said to date BLC has been struggling due to a challenging and volatile tourism environment, thus we have decided to take the most appropriate strategy to capitalise debt and own more than 90 per cent of BLC. He further said restructuring plan is on the horizon for BLC in the coming months including a complete refurbishment plan for Mystique Princess. Following debt capitalization, FHL now owned 93.2 per cent of BLC and the rest is owned by 46 other shareholders. The board directors include Naiveli (chairman) Viliame Gavoka, Ulaiyasi Baya, Kemeueli Qoro, Rajesh Patel and Nauzab Fareed.
Fiji Passports Coming Next Week

Fijis passport supplier, Oberthur Technologies contract is likely to be maintained as the new 40,000 books scheduled to arrive in the country next Wednesday. Immigration director Major Nemani Vuniwaqa said the company had assured that the passports, with new features, would arrive as promised earlier. Oberthur Technologies promised that 40,000 books would arrive in the country in March since the company was awarded a five-year contract to supply Fiji passports. I can reassure members of the public that we have not acquired any problem as yet which means the passports are coming on this given date, Major Vuniwaqa said. He said they would need to work on a schedule on the issuing of the book. Major Vuniwaqa said once the new passports arrived members of the public whose applications had been pending would be advised when they could collect their book. As from last week we have received 13,700 applications, although we do not want to disappoint applicants, we advised them to refer to advertisements on when they can receive their passport, Major Vuniwaqa said. He said 5000 emergency passport applications had been received.

Fiji will soon reveal its new global destination brand following the decision to discontinue using Fiji Me, says the Ministry of Tourism permanent secretary Elizabeth Powell. She made the comments while addressing accountants from around the country at the annual Fiji Institute of Accountants (FIA) congress at the Sheraton in Nadi. Tourism Fiji will soon announce its new global brand, she said. We have stopped using Fiji Me and everyone (stakeholders) are working together on this. She added that making sure that Fiji and Fijians get the maximum amount of publicity and awareness around the globe as a truly wonderful destination. This is the main priority to make sure that we are able to relate to the different cultural, traditional and environmental aspects of Fiji, Powell said. She added that the outcomes currently being worked on is for the best of Fijians. The brand Fiji Me was launched in 2009 and has since been the backbone of Tourism Fiji's activities attracting visitors from all over the globe.

Cyclists Donate $12,000 To PM'S Flood Appeal

The Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum commended the efforts of a young group that cycled around Viti Levu to collect funds for the Prime Ministers Flood Relief Fund. Its wonderful what theyve done. Cycling around the island to raise funds for the Prime Ministers Flood Appeal shows the willingness to contribute to the flood appeal but also it tells all of us that it can be done, Mr SayedKhaiyum said. Many of these people were first time cyclists. Some of them trained just a couple of weeks beforehand. Its obviously good for the health too. So it could be an inspiration for all of us to be able to cycle around the island or at least remain fit. The nine member team left Suvas Holiday Inn on June 2nd at 9am and arrived June 9th at 2pm. They completed the 500 kilometer cycle around Viti Levu in their bid to assist the relief works for flood victims in the West. Team leader, Mr Howard Foster said their main objective was to do a fund raising appeal for the Prime Ministers Relief Fund. Ive been doing some research here and I thought of doing a fund raising appeal since the terrible flooding in the Western Division, Mr Foster said. It took us seven days to complete the 500 km of cycling around Viti Levu. We have collected $11,500 and BSP has assured us that they will top it up to make it $12,000, Mr Foster said. Mr Foster acknowledged all those who have assisted his team in making this 500 kilometer cycling a success. I would also like to thank all those who have contributed in kind or cash towards this cycling, Mr Foster added.

Fiji garment workers earn and live below the poverty line, say Fiji Trade Union Congress national secretary Felix Anthony. Anthony said this is nothing that Fiji ought to be proud of. His comment comes after the announcement by the president of the Fiji Textile, Clothing and Footwear Council, Kalpesh Solanki last month that the garment industry is poised for a $100 million boom. Anthony said this is definitely derived from the blood and sweat of the garment industry workers where 70 per cent are women who are forced to work on low and demeaning wages. The 2012 UNDP Survey for Vanua Levu shows that over 48 per cent of population there is living below the poverty line. Anthony said it has been determined time and again that one of the basic reasons for poverty in this country is due to the low level of wages paid to the employees. This is reflected starkly by the wages paid to the workers in the garment industry. Solanki said in his speech at the Fiji/ China bilateral technical assistance workshop last month that the Garment Wages Council was the very first wages council to agree to the increase in the minimum wages in April this year. He said through consensus it was agreed to increase minimum wages by nine per cent. This recommendation is before the Ministry of Labour at the moment.

The crew used the Sheraton Wedding Chapel to do a wedding scene for the film, being produced under the Next Gen Films (Fiji) banner. The film stars Bollywood hunk Neil Nitin Mukesh and beauty Sonal Chauhan as lead. A number of locals have also been selected to act in the film. Meanwhile, the film was also shot in several hot spots of the tourist town of Nadi. A 22-year-old man who had raped his seven-year-old neighbour in February last year was sentenced to ten years in jail by the Lautoka High Court. Justice Priyantha Nawana upheld the unanimous guilty verdict that was delivered by the assessors. In sentencing Justice Nawana said the accused breached the trust reposed on him by the father of the victim. Rape is a very serious crime. The nature of the crime is such that a victim is subjected to physical harm and psychological trauma at the behest of an offender for his ephemeral lust. Justice Nawana called on parents to prevent exposure of their children to this sort of vulnerable situations. The parents must be faulted and deserve to be admonished for exposing the child to a grave crime such as this. It is the duty of the parents and the guardians to prevent the children from exposing to this kind of vulnerable situations. Evidence, on the contrary, showed that

Radical groups that disrupt legitimate environmental conservation not welcomed by Fiji The Republic of Fiji takes very seriously the protection of its pristine environment, specifically with regard to the sustainable preservation of its waters and fisheries. Government is currently working with local and international conservation organisations and the fishing industry, which are assisting the Fijian Department of Fisheries with monitoring, education, and awareness. Together with these partners, Fiji is committed to sustainable development policies that aim to protect the countrys marine resources, while taking into account the socio-economic needs of Fijian citizens, in order to ensure sustainable livelihoods. Radical international groups, such as the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, any similar organisation or any other related party, which seek to sensationalize esoteric fishing practices, including on so-called "reality television," do so for purposes of self-promotion at the expense of disrupting legitimate conservation work. These groups are not welcome in Fiji and will not be tolerated by Government.

UTO ni Yalo captain Jonathan Smith believes Fiji citizens must become responsible for the ocean and ban plastic bags. We have witnessed so much damage to the worlds ocean and we come back home with a message for Fiji to ban the plastic bag, he said as the Pacific Voyagers arrived in Suva. If youre going shopping, take a bag from home with you. We came across a town that did not use plastic bags at all. People took their own bags to the supermarket and used environmentally-friendly and biodegradable bags. Captain Smith said covering 70 per cent of the planet, the worlds vast waters provided food, oxygen, jobs and more. Although we heavily depend on the ocean, new fishing technologies, pollution, lax regulation, and a growing global human population with its higher demand for fish have all put the oceans health at risk, he said. After sailing more than 50,000 kilometers more than once around the Earth at the equator to Fiji since March last year he said the ocean suffered because of overfishing and pollution. The trash we put into the ocean, whether from land or directly into the sea, has a tremendous impact. Wherever we sailed we found plastics all over, he said. We filled both hulls of the Uto with plastic bags of sorts and other rubbish that we found in the water between our voyage legs. The Uto crew rescued a struggling turtle because it had eaten a plastic bag. It is very sad to see what were doing to our ocean. Every little thing we do on land has some consequence in the water, he said. The Pacific Voyagers will rest in Suva before departing for Vanuatu and then to the Solomons for the Pacific Arts Festival.

E- Group For Pacific To Share Information On Ageing

Plans are underway to develop an E-Group that will enable information sharing among Fiji and its Pacific Island neighbors, says the permanent secretary for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Mr Govind Sami. He said the move is one of the major recommendations ensuing from HelpAge Network Asia/Pacific Regional Conference held last month in Myanmar. A total of 28 international and regional countries had discussions on the theme Rapid Ageing: A Caring Future and Forum on Voice of Older Persons. Mr Sami said E-Group would be an ideal platform for information sharing among actors on ageing. Having an E-Group means that countries will be able to share their views, plans and strategies to address ageing trend and this will strengthen pacific island network to develop a multi-sectoral approach at regional level, placing ageing as an important agenda for Pacific Island Forum, Mr Sami said. The conference also provided opportunities for Asia Pacific representatives to discuss the challenges and way forward in terms of addressing the needs of elderly. The meeting has taken the bottom up approach whereby we get to hear the voices of the elderly and then take the decision on actions to be taken. Some of the other emerging issues discussed at the conference were the need for social protection for elderly, health care plans and labour composition, where elderly will dominate the labour market. The conference heard that by 2030, we will have more older people than children in the world and it calls for policies to ensure the implications of ageing trend are addressed. For example, more elderly population calls for specialized health care facilities. It is also important for Governments to ensure that issues on elderly needs are captured into the social and economic plans, Mr Sami said. He said Fiji is the only country in the Pacific Region to have an Ageing Policy, which has a clear objective of cultivating an inclusive and supportive environment for elderly. Fiji will be able to provide a good response on its progress at the International Plan for Action on Ageing (MIPAA) meeting next year, Mr Sami added. Mr Sami was accompanied by the Executive Director Fiji Council of Social Services Mr Hassan Khan to this meeting in Yangon, Myanmar. The Madrid International Plan for Action on Ageing (MIPAA) is a comprehensive action plan for governments, civil society and others for building a society for all ages adopted by the UN General Assembly at the Second World Assembly on Ageing in Madrid in 2002.
The supply of yaqona from Taveuni has not been a problem over the past year, says farmer and buyer Vijay Singh. Mr Singh who has been a farmer for more than three decades said the supply had been constant and in some cases supply had exceeded demand. "The past year has been the best because I did not experience any shortage," he said. "I buy and supply yaqona from Taveuni to markets in Viti Levu and there is a huge demand out there, especially in the Western Division. "My major market is Sigatoka and I have not run short of supply as farmers flood the market with yaqona every week."

Mr Singh said farmers in the south and north ends of the island were his customers. It costs a lot to travel to villages as far as Vuna and Lavena but I go there to buy yaqona. "The new trend now is that a lot of farmers come to my home to sell their yaqona and this happens when they are in need of fast cash. "It shows how readily available cash is in our very own farms and when farmers need it, they just go sell their produce to the market." Mr Singh said the competition on the island had gotten better than when he first started in the 1990s. "Now, the price of yaqona is as high as $25 a kilogram of waka," he said.

Following the opening, Prime Minister Bainimarama toured international booths at the symposium and was assured by the Governor of Zhejiang Province that a Fiji Booth would be included in next years symposium. The Head of Government then visited the county of Shaoxing in the Zhejiang province. He was hosted by the vice Mayor of Shaoxing Municipality, Mr Xu Minguang. At the meeting, the Prime Minister was briefed that approvals had been given from Shaoxing to Tengy Cement to commence construction of the cement factory in Fiji and to further invest in iron ore extraction. Meanwhile, a dalo factory in Shaoxing has been given the green light to explore ways to purchase dalo from Fiji and look at ways to produce dalo products with the intent of setting up a factory in Fiji soon. Arrangements are underway to export dalo to Shaoxing immediately. There is a huge market for dalo in China and the Prime Minister is
particularly interested in providing a market for dalo to our farmers in both the rural or remote areas. Shaoxing also has the largest textile production in China with a total production capital of RMB89billion in 2012 and foreign trade earnings of USD33billion dollars. Talks are now underway to pursue similar operations in Fiji. Prime Minister Bainimarama thanked the Shaoxing Local Government for their support to Fiji and said that Fiji would be most willing to accept genuine investors from Shaoxing. He also invited food processing and fruit companies to come to Fiji to take advantage of available farming land. He concluded his meeting with the Vice Mayor by thanking the Government of China for being a staunch and genuine ally of Fiji when most of its friends deserted Fiji since 2006. In addition he stated that "China has been very supportive of our reforms and the Fijian Government is very appreciative of this; it is because of this support that we have been able to progress steadily over the years".

60 Year Old Jailed For Rape

A 60-year-old man has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment for raping his sister-in-law. The father of four pleaded guilty to two counts of rape before High Court judge Justice Salesi Temo in Suva. The court heard that on May 18, 2008, the victim went with the accused in his boat to drop her son off at school and returned via the same boat that evening. Only the accused and the complainant were in the boat which developed problems and drifted among a group of islands. Justice Temo said the accused gave the only blanket to the complainant to cover herself and later shared the blanket with the complainant. Justice Temo said the offence was a serious breach of trust, saying the accused was the elder brother of the complainants husband, who died in 2008. "The accused thereby stood in a position of trust to the complainant who was his sister-in-law," Justice Temo said. "He was supposed to look after her and care for her. Instead, he raped her when she was vulnerable in his boat out at sea at the time. "Furthermore, by committing the crime, the accused showed utter disregard to the complainants right as an individual, including her dignity. "The accused was extremely selfish in forcing himself on the complainant without seeking her consent." Justice Temo sentenced the man to seven years imprisonment for each count to be served concurrently. He also ordered that the accused serve a non-parole period of five years.

His Excellency the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau has urged parents to educate their children about the deadly epidemic of HIV/AIDS and the various issues related to it, as HIV education begins from home. Ratu Epeli, who is visiting Sigatoka as part of his nation-wide anti- HIV AIDS campaign, told students and teachers of Sigatoka Methodist College that HIV/ AIDS is very much a fact in all our lives today. He said students must be taught about these issues now in school so that they make responsible decisions in their own lives and inform others about this disease at the same time. Parents should by now have realized after 40 years that HIV/AIDS is not going to go away by just ignoring it and by avoiding talking about it. HIV/AIDS can only go away by our combined response in educating first the family and next the public at large about this deadly epidemic, for which there is no known cure, Ratu Epeli said. The President said that the public at large is being educated about HIV/ AIDS but it is the parents responsibility to play their part. Parents must reject stigma and discrimination. They must communicate openly about the risks and they must change behaviour norms. He stressed that teachers are there to assist in the teaching process but HIV education must begin with the parents. Ensuring safer sex reduces the spread of HIV. We need to get more people, particularly the youth, to adopt safer sexual behaviours. The catch word is to get it on before you get it on, he said. He also called on everybody to work together in ensuring there are zero new HIV infections, zero HIV discrimination and zero HIV/AIDS related death. Ratu Epeli re-emphasized the need for Government, the business community, faith based organisations and all Fijians to work together in raising the much needed awareness across all levels of our society. With international campaigns against the deadly disease gaining momentum, the support of the nation was critical in minimizing the risks associated with the spread of the disease. "You, parents have a more important role to play as the awareness needed to start from home," Ratu Epeli added.

Civil servants planning to take up diplomatic positions need to understand Fijis foreign policy settings and the agendas, which have matured and organically developed since 2006. Public Service Commission chairman, Josefa Serulagilagi was speaking at the Diplomatic Induction Training for civil servants looking at a career in Fijis growing network of diplomatic presence, a course designed and conducted by Fijis Ambassador to Japan, His Excellency Mr Isikeli Mataitoga. He said the level of independence shown by Fijis foreign policy agenda and practice will need to be maintained with bilateral and regional relations to be on a new footing, as the new power balancing needed to be taken into account. Mr Serulagilagi also said that human resource development cannot be separated from economic progress and there were several advances in
technology that many die-hard civil servants were still grappling with. He said there was still a preference for the long laborious tasks of pushing pens and punching files, rather than pressing touch-go buttons that reduces work durations immensely. There is no denying that it is very important for all Government agencies to bring into full play the role of skills development and training, in improving the quality and capacity of workers, Mr Serulagilagi said. This is vital because we expect ownership and commitment, to carry the agenda through, despite the many challenges we have faced and those that await us in the future. The week-long programme will see diplomats from countries such as India, the United States of America and Papua New Guinea speaking to the participants.

Australia Donates $8.2M To Pacifics Disabled

The Australian Government has donated $FJ8.2 million to the Pacific Disability Forum. As announced by Australias Foreign Minister, Senator Bob Carr, it has to empower people with disabilities to reach their full potential. People with disability are often invisible and shut out of community life. The Pacific Disability Forum brings people with disability together to have a stronger voice for their rights with governments, civil society and development partners at local, national and international levels, said Senator Carr. The Pacific Disability Forum is the regional umbrella network of Disabled Persons Organisations in the Pacific, and today in Fiji it helped to stage an important event that brought together stakeholders from across the Pacific to discuss community-based rehabilitation approaches. It provides leadership training for men and women with disability to lead social change in their countries and activities to increase community awareness and recognition of the needs and aspirations of Pacific people with disability, said Senator Carr. Over the past year, Australias partnership with the Pacific Disability Forum has helped 13 Disabled Persons Organisations across nine Pacific Island countries to raise awareness about disability rights in the Pacific. Chairman of the Pacific Disability Forum Seta Macanawai, in a statement, said they have been very pleased to have a genuine and equal partnership with AusAID from the start, which is empowering to people with disabilities. The Pacific Disability Forum appreciates the steps taken by the Australian government for responding positively, effectively and generously to the aspirations of Pacific people. As a result, people with disability have been able to participate equally in developing national disability policies in Niue, Tuvalu, Palau, Tonga and Kiribati.
Amputee Awarded
A 32-year-old Labasa sports instructor who lost both his legs in a road accident in 2007 has been awarded a compensation of $667,722 by the High Court in Labasa. Zahid Afwaz Ali won the case against the Patterson Brothers Shipping Company Limited, Prasad Holding Limited, and the two bus drivers who were involved in the incident. Presiding judge Justice Pradeep Hettiarachchi in delivering judgment said the plaintiff is entitled to damages for pain and suffering. In assessing damages for pain and suffering, court takes into account not only the suffering which the plaintiff had suffered immediately after the accident, but also the future suffering that he will have throughout his life. At the time of the accident the plaintiff was 27 years of age, was a young and dynamic person and had a very cheerful life. However, his promising future was ruined by the accident and no amount of compensation can bring back the normal life that he had before the accident. Unquestionably, he would have also experienced excruciating pain and discomfort when he was being trained to wear artificial limbs in a hospital in India. The defense challenged the suit with the explanation that no receipt was produced by the plaintiff in court. The court heard that the plaintiff explained that the ticket that was on him was lost after the bulldozer pulled him free from the wreckage. Justice Hettiarachchi concluded that although the plaintiff had failed to produce any receipt to justify transportation cost to Labasa hospital. It is common knowledge that no one is issued with receipts when he or she hire a taxi in Fiji. Therefore, the plaintiff cannot be expected to have receipts issued by the taxis. Patterson Brothers Shipping Company Limited, Prasad Holdings Limited and Sabir Hussein, a bus driver, were jointly ordered by the court to pay $667,722 to the victim. The court had heard that Ali had accompanied his students to a sports competition in Suva. They took a return trip via the Nabouwalu route by the Spirit of Harmony when the bus that Hussein, the bus driver, tried to overtake the bus on which Mr Ali was travelling on. At Tabia, they collided resulting in the rear end of the bus breaking apart and hitting a Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) post. Ali was sitting in the middle of the bus and his legs were struck between the metal of the bus and the FEA post. His legs were finally freed, by a bull dozer half an hour later but both his legs were crushed and his right leg was hanging above the knee. Adi Samanunu Cakobau Talakulis death is a great loss, says her cousin Adi Finau Tabakaucoro. She was the eldest daughter of the late Ratu Sir George Cakobau. Adi Finau said Adi Samanunu, 72, was a role model for most of us. She was beautiful and gracious and when she needed to make a tough decision, she did it with courtesy, said an emotional Adi Finau. Adi Samanunu has been sick for a while and last month when I spoke to her she said the doctor told her that she has some liver problems. She was Minister for Fijian Affairs in 1994 and 1995, and was considered as a candidate for the Vice-Presidency in 1997. She became Fiji's High Commissioner to Malaysia and Ambassador to Thailand and the Economic and Social Commission
for Asia and the Pacific in 1999. She got appointed to the Fijian Senate in June 2006 as one of nine nominees of the Fijian government; Talakuli was also appointed to the Cabinet as a Minister without portfolio. As the eldest child of the last Vunivalu of Bau, she was considered the seniormost chief of the Kubuna Confederacy; however she was not a member of the Bose Levu Vakaturaga. Adi Samanunus siblings include Ratu George Cakobau Jr, Adi Litia Qalirea Cakobau, and Ratu Epenisa Seru Cakobau. She is survived by her husband Manasa Talakuli, who was the first Fijian to be commissioned into the British Army and her only son. Her funeral is expected to be held next Friday.

3 Ghana Students Plead Guilty To Fiji And Kazakhstan Tie To Boost Fraud Charges Tourism
Three Ghana nationals have pleaded guilty to the charge of illegal use of personal information from credit cards from November 30 last year to January 8 this year Marvin Opoku Agyemang, Boakye Vincent Kwame, and Isaac Velison entered their guilty plea before Magistrate Yohan Liyange in the Magistrates Court in Suva and admitted using credit card information of at least six different people. Agyemang, Kwame and Vellison were represented by Legal Aid lawyer Senikavika Jiuta. Attorney for the State Taina Leweni read out the summaries of facts for the trio. The court heard that the three first arrived in Fiji as part of a group from the World Harvest Social Club in Accra, Ghana in November last year. With their student visas they entered the country and supposedly came to do internship in Eco -Tourism in Fiji. Before arriving in Fiji they also travelled through Kenya, India, Singapore and Papua New Guinea. According to prosecution while in Fiji, the three stayed at various hotels. Seamus Chang an employee of Vodafone Fiji Limited, noticed some irregular activities on the Vodafone online shop of recharges of $100 and reported the matter to the Westpac Bank to verify whether the transactions were authorized. Upon investigations made by Westpac employee Jasmeen Bhan, verified that the transactions were not authorized by the legal owners of the credit cards. The trio was arrested after a related incident was reported at the Samabula branch of Court Fiji Limited, where they had used fake American passports for purchases. The court heard that upon a search of the house where they stayed revealed credit card information of six peopleone from United States of America, one from Australia and the four of unknown origins, which the three are, said to have used dishonestly. While pleading guilty, the three asked Magistrate Liyanage for time to make their mitigation submission. Magistrate Liyanage also ordered that Boakes medical certificate be presented in court when the case is recalled as Boake claimed that he was suffering from cancer and did not hesitate to take his t-shirt off and show the swelling on his chest. He stated that he did not get medical attention although this was approved by court. The case resumes on June 22. Fiji is looking to boost diplomatic relations with Kazakhstan, which include a visa arrangement between the two countries. The Republic of Kazakhstans NonResident Ambassador to Fiji, Beibut Atamkulov, met Foreign Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola in Suva last week to discuss avenues that would boost diplomatic relations between the two countries. Kazakhstan, one of the 15 independent states seceded from the USSR in its dissolution in 1991, is keen to look at opportunities for co-operation within the Asia Pacific region. "First, we need to ease Kazakhstan and Fiji nationals access to either country. By that, the two countries will be looking at a reciprocal visa arrangement. "In this way, Kazakhstan and Fiji nationals will be free to visit each other without any worries about visa requirements," Ratu Inoke said. Mr Atamkulov said he was appreciative of the visit to Fiji because it was an opportunity for him to learn about the country and witness its beauty. "I am most happy to be here and to witness the beauty of nature in Fiji," Mr Atamkulov said. He stated a group of Kazakh businessmen would be invited to come to Fiji to look at possible business prospects, especially in the tourism sector. Mr Atamkulov is also keen to study Fijis aviation sector after discovering Fijis national airline now offers three weekly flights to Hong Kong. "For the 500,000 Kazakh tourists that leave their country for warmer places during winter, the news about these weekly flights is indeed promising," Mr Atamkulov said. Kazakhstan recently played an important role in regards to both trade and world markets because of its oil and natural gas reserves. Within the next decade, Kazakshstan is projected to become one of the worlds largest oil producers and exporters.

Reports Highlight Worst Form Of Child Labour
Fiji And India Trade Talk

Talks have begun between Fiji and India on co-operation in the area of trade standards. This has been confirmed by the Permanent Secretary for Industry and Trade, Shaheen Ali. Mr Ali, during the Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC) in Yeosu, Korea, had bilateral discussions with the director general of Bureau of Indian Standards, Alinda Chandra. The preliminary discussions with the bureau has been around the establishment of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Department of National Trade Measurement and Standard of Fiji and the Bureau of Indian Standards, he said. The MOU is expected to enable Fiji get assistance in standards development, through access to standards and technical assistance for further enhancement of Fijian standardization activities. Mr Ali said India has been involved in standardization since the 1947 and Fiji stood to gain a lot from the Indian experience. The advantage with having cooperation with India in the area of standards development is that Fiji will be able to adopt developing country perspective in sectors like the knowledge industry, he said. To date, Fiji has had cooperation with Standards Australia which has been valuable and much appreciated. Mr Ali believes India also stands to gain from Fiji and the Pacific, through having a better understanding of the market needs and standards priorities of the region. This will in turn facilitate Indian industries entering into the Pacific market, he said. Fijis attendance of the PASC meeting has led to a resolution to be taken up the PASC Executive Committee on progressing standards infrastructure in the Pacific. Fiji would provide an update to the forthcoming PASC executive committee meetings on the strategies to further this initiative. Mr Ali said this would be done after undertaking extensive consultations with its fellow Pacific Island countries. We will then highlight to the PASC members, the level and the type of cooperation and assistance required, he said. Mr Ali stressed the Fijian Government had taken the decision to review Fijis standards administration and laboratory under the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The Minister for Industry and Trade, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum is keen to explore the regional approach in this review, he said.

More than 500 children are involved in the worst form of child labour in Fiji. According to recent reports from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) some of the worst forms of child labour in the country include commercial sexual exploitation of children, drug trafficking, begging and hazardous work where children under the age of 15 are involved. Speaking during the World Day Against Child Labour celebrations in Suva, the Director for ILO South Pacific Countries, David Lamotte said the main contributing factors to child labour in Fiji were poverty, family breakdown, education, unemployment, internal migration and crisis situation. "Programs to withdraw and prevent children from the worst forms of child labour have found that many children are out of the education system, having dropped out of school from a few months to at least five years ago," Mr Lamotte said. He said the lack of social support services and relevant education programs for child labourers and school dropouts posed a challenge to effectively removing children from the worst forms of child labour. Fiji's Ministry of Labour, Child Labour Unit manager Atish Kumar said a child in Fiji could start work from the age of 15 but should not be exposed to hazardous working environment. "A child in Fiji can qualify to work in any environment once he or she is 18 and above and provided he or she is getting paid in accordance to the minimum wage rate." With the minimum wage rate in Fiji being $2.75 an hour, Mr Kumar, however, said children's main priority should be education. "Children are the future of our society. We are currently withdrawing them from work and admitting them in schools because through education they will be able to get better jobs," he said. Issuing a stern warning to those who employ under aged children, Mr Kumar says the ministry is working on some cases to prosecute employers who are employing under aged children and those who do not pay them a minimum wage. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labour Deputy Secretary Samuela Namosimalua said an individual can be fined $10,000 and more than $50,000 for a corporate business if found employing under aged children. Mr Namosimalua also assured that as part of the Millennium Development Goal, Fiji is trying to reach the target to eliminate any worst form of child labour by 2016.

Banks Warn Customers On Scammers

crimes and cheque frauds. Last week, ABIF warned customers to be wary of online scams saying they were on a rise. "People should never give out their personal confidential information, even to their close family and friends," Westpac Fiji general manager Adrian Hughes said. "Because we issued you those passwords and personal identification numbers (PINs) and the like in the first place, Westpac would never email or text customers asking them about their online banking details and passwords. "Even if we need to verify a transaction, we'll call the customer but we would never ask for those personal details. "We've got a strong sound system to protect our customers money. However, controls and security of personal details are compromised if a customer gives out their personal details to unauthorized third parties. Its like them giving the key to their house directly to the criminal." Mr Hughes said cases of recent online fraud have shown scammers are using more creative ways to extract customer information. Emails, phone messages masquerading as customer satisfaction surveys, advertisements for jobs at a bank or financial institution and even lucky customer prizes that then proceed to ask for customer details, sometimes to supposedly allow them to deposit the money as fronts for scams. ANZ Bank said it offered a range of security measures to ensure that customers transactions and personal information were protected. These included: ANZ Internet Banking guarantee When using ANZ Internet, security measures are in place to protect against any unauthorized transactions. If one is a victim of fraud, the bank guarantees reimbursement for any unauthorized transactions. The guarantee also extends fraud transactions on credit cards. Fraud detection system - a sophisticated technology to monitor internet Banking and credit card transactions to identify suspicious activity and alert customers. Firewalls - a firewall mechanism to prevent unauthorized access to and from the network. Automatic time outs - within the internet banking system, sessions can remain unattended for a maximum of 15 minutes. After this time, the system automatically logs off and ends your session. Account aggregation - Unless the account services are provided or referred to you by ANZ, ANZ does not authorize, promote or endorse the use of account services offered by parties other than ANZ to access your ANZ accounts. ANZ head of electronic banking, Apenisa Seniloli said customers should keep their computers safe by having up to date security software and to also check that they are only using trusted sites for purchasing items. They should not open emails they are not sure about, he said. "Keep your computer browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox), and product software (Microsoft Office/ Adobe flash, etc) up to date. Software providers frequently develop updates and patches to address new and developing security threats. "Report anything you are suspicious of immediately, especially if you think your card has been stolen, a suspicious transaction is on your bank statement, or your mail has been accessed by someone," he added.
ONLINE scammers are becoming more creative and local banks have warned customers to be careful. "Customers need to be alert but not alarmed by these scammers. They should keep a close watch on their accounts and report any suspicious transactions immediately to their financial institution," Association of Banks in Fiji (ABIF) general secretary Rasiklal Jogia said. Online fraud or scams refer to any type of fraud that users email, web sites, chat rooms or message boards to present fraudulent propositions to prospective victims mainly to solicit money from their accounts, the ABIF said. Banking fraud, it added, could also involve card skimming, where information from the magnetic strip
of a credit or ATM card is copied. Once scammers have skimmed a card, they can create another card with the stolen information and run up charges on a customers account. This is also a way identities are stolen where the scammers can take out loans using this information. According to the ABIF, fraudsters are also calling people pretending to be bank officers and asking questions about customers' personal details. There is also a growing trend of mule recruiters those who advertise fake jobs. Last year, at the Anti Money Laundering workshop, the Fiji Police Force estimated that collectively locals lost about $1million in a visa scam after responding to an advertisement by a man who offered permanent residency in Australia and asked for bank card details. Heavy downpour in Fiji's Western Division has caused flash flooding in some parts of Nadi and Lautoka. The current situation is due to an active trough of low pressure just to the west of Fiji which is gradually moving eastwards towards the group. According to the latest bulletin issued by the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi, a heavy rain warning remains in force for Viti Levu, Kadavu, Southern Lau, Yasawa, Mamanuca Group and Lomaiviti. The Commissioner Western's office is advising people to take extreme caution and contact the relevant authorities if they feel they are insecure. Operations officer Jiuta Waqavonovono said they have toured areas in Sigatoka, Nadi and Lautoka and rain has eased. However, the water level in the Nadi and Sigatoka rivers are rising and people living in low lying areas are being advised to move to high grounds.

"We are monitoring the situation closely and have our people on the ground. There was flash flooding in some areas but nothing major has been reported," said Waqavonovono. "We are closely working with the District Officers and Police and so far no decision has been taken on opening evacuation centres but we will be making an announcement after monitoring the situation." "My only advice to people is not to panic but be very cautious and contact the authorities if they need any help." '"As it stands, the rain has eased but we cannot predict the weather and things can change anytime and we are anticipating the water levels to rise in the main rivers after high tide which is around midnight." Fiji TV License To Be Renewed For Further 12 Years
Fiji Television Limited confirmed that it has been given formal assurance from Communications Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum that Fiji TV's broadcast license will be renewed for a further 12 years. Fiji TV Chairman, Isoa Kaloumaira said that Sayed-Khaiyum himself had written to the company in a letter dated October 14. 2011 confirming the renewal of Fiji TV's license for a further 12 year period. Kaloumaira said that Fiji TV management has had meetings with the
ministry officials and the information sought included the coverage area, number of hours of local content, hours of prime time broadcast, ethnic language based programs and other relevant program and technical information. Sayed-Khaiyum told us that he will comment on certain statements and reports about the conditions allegedly set out for the renewal of Fiji TV's broadcast license. The International Federation of Journalists and the Pacific Freedom Forum claim that the government has raised concern about the coverage given to the opposition by Fiji TV. The people in the opposition lineup according to these organisations include Laisenia Qarase, Mahendra Chaudhry and others. The international federation and the Freedom Forum say in their statements that the management of Fiji TV has been put on notice that all the station's content will be monitored this month and will influence the decision regarding the renewal of Fiji TV's broadcasting license, due at the end of this month.

Davendra Naicker who allegedly murdered a taxi driver in Nausori last year will reappear in the High Court in Suva on July 20. Naicker, 30, has pleaded not guilty to the charges with one count-each of murder and driving a motor vehicle without a proper licence appeared before Justice Paul Madigan.

Police Reassures Visitor Safety

Police have arrested and charged a man in relation to the alleged attempted rape of an international volunteer last week. Assistant police spokeswoman west Naina Ragigia confirmed a man has been charged with attempted rape and that a search was continuing for two other men. The police said the three men tried to rape a 22-year-old US volunteer on June 3 in the new Field 40 subdivision. The woman has since returned to the US. Earlier this week, the police expressed concern at the way the overseas media sensationalised the incident by reporting the volunteer was kidnapped. Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said in a statement a report of a different nature was lodged with the police regarding the volunteer. "However, due to the non-cooperation of the complainant, our officers could not conduct their investigation thoroughly and ascertain the true nature of the report," she said. "The Fiji Police Force stands ready to investigate matters brought before us. However, we can only do so much if complainants are not willing to work with us. "It's worrying to note that no attempt was made to get a balanced story and we can emphasize once again that Fiji is a safe place for our volunteer workers who we value and treat as our very own fellow citizens and always welcome as a part of the Fijian family." Ms Naisoro gave an assurance that the safety of people visiting Fiji was paramount.

Fijian Soldiers Guard Basra

Fijians soldiers have voluntarily stayed back in Iraq providing security for the United Nations (UN) at Basra. This was confirmed by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) spokesman and Land Force Commander, Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga. He said a request was made by the United Nations to the Fiji Government last November when the Nepalese military contingent had ended their tour. Colonel Tikoitoga said the request was received just before the departure of the Fijian contingent at the end of their tour of duty. According to Colonel Tikoitoga they responded positively to the invitation and asked for volunteers. He said 41 Fijian soldiers volunteered to stay back to replace their Nepalese comrades. They were subsequently transferred to their posts in Basra. Fijis Ambassador to the United Nations Peter Thomson handled all the negotiations and according to Colonel Tikoitoga was very pleased with the positive remarks from the UN. He said 21 Fiji soldiers will arrive in Nadi next Wednesday after their extended tour of duty in Basra. The other 20 will arrive into the country next Friday. Colonel Tikoitoga said it was a testament to RFMFs credibility that the UN turned to Fiji to replace the Nepalese troops. Basra is a port city situated 549 km southeast of Baghdad and Kirkuk, anoil province 250 km north of Bagdhad. According to Colonel Tikoitoga our soldiers had undertaken both static and mobile duties that involved guarding UN buildings and providing security to UN convoys in Basra and Kirkuk. He said Fijis involvement in Basra had been good and our soldiers were diligent in the execution of their operational duties.
Rotary Distributes Vegetable Seedlings To Small Farmers

The Rotary Club is assessing small vegetable farmers in Lautoka to determine whether the organisation can further extend help as farmers' lives continue to return to normal. Called the seedling project, the group has assessed farmers living in floodhit areas, mainly Drasa Seaside, Lovu Seaside, Paipai, Vakabuli, Buabua, Qalitu, Vitogo Village. Project officer Allan Lockington said they were also targeting individual families that opted to plant their own vegetables. "We are working very closely with the Ministry of Agriculture on the project. They will be supplying us with the seedlings that we will be giving to the farmers." "We will be buying the seedlings from the Ministry of Agriculture using the money that was donated by Rotary New Zealand. "The money that we got for the project is more than $100,000 with the view to increase that amount with the help of the New Zealand AID," he said.

Bill On Sikh Marriage Registration Passed

Now Sikhs will be able to register their marriages under the Anand Marriage Act instead of the Hindu Marriage Act, with President Pratibha Patil giving her assent to a bill passed by Parliament in the Budget session. Although the Anand Marriage law was enacted in 1909, there was no provision for registration of marriages which were registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. "The Anand Marriage (Amendment) Bill, 2012 after having received the assent of the President on June 7, 2012, has been published as corresponding Act in the Gazette of India," a Law Ministry statement said. Sikh groups have maintained that members of the community face problems abroad as their certificates are issued under the Hindu Marriage Act. Besides Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists are issued certificates under the Hindu laws Sikh marriage ceremonies are known as 'Anand Karaj' (blissful event). According to the Anand Marriage (Amendment) Bill, couples whose marriages have been registered under this Act, will not be required to get their marriage registered under the Registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths Act, 1969 or any other law for the time being in force.

'Accidental Millionaire' Pleads Guilty
The man dubbed the "accidental millionaire'' has pleaded guilty to seven charges of stealing from a bank before he fled overseas. Hui "Leo'' Gao pleaded guilty to seven charges of theft totaling almost $6.8 million when he appeared at the Auckland District Court. The charges relate to offending between April 24 and May 5, 2009 in Rotorua and Auckland. Gao originally faced 16 charges. The reasons for the change are suppressed. He has been remanded on electronic bail until his sentencing in Rotorua in August. Judge Roy Wade said bail did not mean Gao would necessarily avoid prison. According to the police, Gao applied to Westpac for a $100,000 overdraft in 2009 for his struggling BP petrol station in Rotorua. The overdraft was approved. But the bank accidentally transferred a $10m overdraft in to his account. A day later Gao discovered the mistake.

Chamanjot Singh had slit his wife's throat with a box cutter at least eight times and then strangled her after their marriage deteriorated in 2009, according to a report. However, the jury at the Supreme Court in New South Wales accepted that the accused was provoked by his wife after he testified she had told him she had never loved him and loved another man. Authorities were considering charges after a man allegedly became disruptive aboard a US Airways flight from Charlotte to Los Angeles, an FBI spokesman said. The 29-year-old man was believed to have been intoxicated and was refused alcohol aboard Flight 705, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said. The man, whose name wasn't released, got out of his seat at one point, according to Eimiller, and was eventually restrained. There's no indication the incident was terrorism-related and there were no reports of any injuries. A rare letter written in English by Napoleon Bonaparte in captivity after losing the Battle of Waterloo has been sold at an auction in Paris for a whopping USD 400,000. After a fierce bidding war, the letter was bought by the French Museum of Letters and Manuscripts in Paris. The sale of the letter at the auction house Osenat in Fontainebleau, south of Paris, was more than five times the anticipated price. Napoleon wrote the letter in 1816 when he was trying to learn English during his exile on the South Atlantic island of Saint Helena. Napoleon was exiled to Saint Helena after his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The one-page letter, dated March 9, 1816, is addressed to Napoleon's companion in exile Emmanuel, the Comte de las Cases, who had been teaching him English, as reported. In the letter Napoleon refers to a ship due to dock in St Helena within seven days, bringing news from Europe. However, it is littered with errors, for instance it says: "He shall land above seven day a ship from Europe that we shall give account from anything who this shall have been even today of first January thousand eight hundred sixteen." Napoleon appears to have written the letter during a bout of insomnia, putting at the end: "Four o'clock in the morning." The letter is one of just three in the world known to have been written in English by Bonaparte. The former emperor died on St Helena in 1821 age 51. The Comte de las Cases wrote a book about his time on the island, and recalled how Napoleon had wanted to learn the language of his British captors.
Only those British nationals or residents with an annual income of at least Rs 16 lakhs will be able to bring spouses from the Indian sub-continent and other countries outside the European Union from July 9, the government announced. The new restrictions are part of the David Cameron government's efforts to reduce migration from outside the EU. The curbs on non-EU spouses are also intended to clamp down on bogus marriages and family visas, with migrants ending up on benefits from the taxpayer. Officials insist the proposal is not intended to censor casual or private conversations, but instead to crack down on loud, profanity-laden language used by teens and other young people in the downtown area and public parks. "I'm really happy about it," Mimi Duphily, a store owner and former town selectwoman, said after the vote. "I'm sure there's going to be some fallout, but I think what we did was necessary." Ms Duphily, who runs an auto parts store, is among the downtown merchants who wanted to take a stand against the kind of swearing that can make customers uncomfortable. "They'll sit on the bench and yell back and forth to each other with the foulest language. It's just so inappropriate," she said. The measure could raise questions about constitutional free speech rights, but state law does allow towns to enforce local laws that give police the power to arrest anyone who "addresses another person with profane or obscene language" in a public place. Strippers To Be Stripped Of Work Visas: Kenney

With the passage of its massive budget Bill C-38, the government says it will end giving work visas to foreign strippers once and for all. In Opposition, Stephen Harper was against a Liberal program that effectively expedited work permits for foreigners intending to work in the adult entertainment industry. Though the Conservatives trashed that program soon after taking office, roughly 100 of those visas have been renewed each year since 2006. "The problem is, under the current Immigration Act we don't have the legal authority to deny people visas based on the industry they're working in," Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Jason Kenney said. "Now we have the power, which we'll begin using as soon as those regulations are done this summer, to deny visas to people who we think ... might have a high chance of trafficking or exploitation." Together with other legislation passed this year, provisions under Bill C-38 will take it one step further -- all existing temporary work visas to foreign-born strippers will be cancelled, all new applications will be denied and all "open" work visa holders will be barred from working in the adult entertainment industry. Asked if this could result in mass deportations, an immigration ministry spokesperson said, "We don't comment on hypotheticals." Strippers vow not to take these changes lying down. Tim Lambrinos, president of the Adult Entertainment Association of Canada, is considering challenging the legislation, saying it will only drive these women to work underground. "When I say 'exotic' what do you think of?" he asked. "Foreign, right? Non-indigenous. That's the kind of entertainment people want to see."
Immigration Minister Jason Kenney thinks Canada's new failed-refugee program deserves a chance as it could save taxpayers money in the long run. The government's controversial immigration and refugee bill will now make its way to the Senate despite opposition outrage. Bill C-31, the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, cleared the House of Commons Monday by a 159132 vote after the Conservatives used their majority to pass the bill. The Tories say the bill follows up on an election commitment to bring in "legislative tools to combat human smuggling criminals who want to treat Canada like a doormat." "We hope that this bill will become law before the summer break as it passes to the Senate," Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said. "This bill will also further strengthen our reforms of Canada's asylum system to make sure that it's fast and fair, and will allow for us to improve immigration security screening significantly through legislative authority for biometric visa collection. So it's very important legislation." The legislation will allow the government to detain "irregular applicants" unable to provide identification upon arrival. Once the identity of a claimant is established and a refugee claim is approved, they will be released. Under the terms of the bill, most refugee claimants will have their cases processed within around seven months, though claimants from designated "safe" countries will get a decision faster - within six weeks. The Tories recently agreed to allow judicial reviews of detentions at 14 days and six months, instead of at 12-months as they originally proposed. NDP immigration critic Jinny Sims said the government's bill erodes the foundation of Canada's immigration and refugee system, and breaks domestic and international laws. The B.C. MP takes issue with a number of components in the bill, including the terms surrounding mandatory detentions. "I think it is one of the key pillars in this legislation that is so draconian," she said. "This is really about punishing the most vulnerable citizens when they arrive here, putting their lives at risk and when they get here we're going to throw them in prison."

CBC refuses to say how much each executive received but did reveal that the top bonus for fiscal 2008-09 was $165,090 or 3.5 times the average income of a full-time Canadian worker. That bonus was also paid out at a time when CBC was having to layoff hundreds of workers to deal with the global recession.
Alleged victim a 55-year-old woman from Japan attending school in Canada A Calgary woman has been charged with defrauding an immigrant to Canada out of more than $2 million in property and cash. Police allege Melissa Holman, 40, duped the victim last summer into believing it was unsafe for her to have local assets while staying in Canada on a student visa. The alleged victim is said to be a 55-year-old woman from Japan who was attending school in Calgary. The victim was persuaded to turn over the deeds to two properties one in Signal Hill and one in Springbank and provide the culprit with access to her bank account, police said.
The woman had been living in one of her two properties while attending school. Since the arrest of Holman, deeds to the two properties have been returned and $90,000 has been recovered. Police say $320,000 taken out in bank drafts has not been found. At the time of the offences Holman was president of the Temporary Foreign Workers Association of Canada (TFWA). Police began investigating the matter last September and say Holman was not previously known to them. Holman was arrested last week and faces charges of fraud and theft. Her next court appearance is set for Aug. 21.

Subsidized Bike Share System Worries Rental Shop Owners

Vancouver's plan would see 125 bike stations throughout the city The City of Vancouver is looking at giving the go-ahead to a subsidized, public bicycle sharing system. By spring of 2013, you could be renting one of 1,500 bikes to get to work for around $5. The plan calls for 125 stations scattered throughout the city, each holding around 20, seven-speed bikes apiece. This concerns Joe Kainer at English Bay Bike Rentals, who's talked to people at rental shops in Montreal, where bike share was introduced in 2009. "Pretty much immediately after this was implemented, they had huge kiosks with up to 100 bicycles right across the street or just down the street from their operations and severely under-cutting their prices," he notes. Geoff Sharein is at Spokes Bicycle Rentals on Denman. His main concern is that the public bike share is going to unfairly compete with private rental operations that already exist. "There are at least a dozen of those kinds of businesses, 10 of which are primarily rental shops. It's a lot of people who's pay cheques and longterm ability to work rely on the fact that we can continue to operate," believes Sharein. He says the idea might work if the bikes are designated for short trips versus long sightseeing trips. "I think a properly designed system that serves that market would be a positive step for any city, provided that factors like helmet rentals were sorted out," Sharein adds. "My concern is that perhaps planners of the city hadn't taken into account some of the unique features of Vancouver." Vancouver does say its bike share plan will be promoted for commuting, not tourism. The plan is expected to go to council this fall, and if approved, would launch next spring.
Premier Clark Commits To Redeveloping St. Paul's Hospital
Ruling Clears Way For ICBC Workers To Strike, But Drivers Won't Be Affected
The union representing ICBC workers says it will serve strike notice in a matter of weeks. COPE 378 vice president Jeff Gillies says a Labour Relations Board interim ruling has cleared the way for 72-hour strike notice starting July 1. Gillies says drivers won't be affected. "We want to take a wise and cautious approach to job action. As we have said to ICBC repeatedly, our interest is to take some escalating job action to put some pressure on them to come back to the table and negotiate." Gillies says they could stand down if the corporation returns to the table to talk monetary issues. The workers have been without a contract for two years. ICBC is also calling the interim labour ruling a win. Spokesperson Mark Jan Vrem says the board ruled the union can't threaten essential services with a strike. "We are gratified to note that the Labour Relations Board agreed without application, and they have indeed deemed those essential services, so if the union does take any sort of job action, customers will still continue to be well served." Jan Vrem says the union has to tell ICBC what job action they will take and serve notice well in advance. He says the company hopes negotiations will conclude before the board issues a final ruling.
Premier Christy Clark announced that the redevelopment of St. Paul's Hospital is moving ahead with finalizing the concept plan. "St. Paul's Hospital delivers worldclass care to families in Vancouver and from across British Columbia," said Premier Clark. "Finalizing the concept plan is a critical milestone that will lay a strong foundation for a redeveloped hospital that ensures patients and families continue to receive that worldclass health care for years to come." The Ministry of Health and Providence Health Care will immediately begin work to finalize the redevelopment concept plan, noting the detailed planning will need to account for the complexities of maintaining necessary care for patients on the current site when the project gets underway. It is expected the final concept plan and a more detailed business plan will be complete by 2014. The redevelopment timeframe will be determined through the business plan process. "Patients and health-care professionals can have confidence that our government is addressing the renewal of St. Paul's Hospital," said Health Minister Michael de Jong. "Across British Columbia, we are building better patient care for future generations." It is anticipated the redevelopment will include construction of a new outpatient care tower on the northwest corner of the current St. Paul's Hospital site as well as essential site infrastructure upgrades
and selected renovations such as seismic upgrades to existing buildings. By consolidating and expanding outpatient programs and services, and upgrading existing facilities, the renewal of St. Paul's Hospital will provide more accessible, efficient care, allowing for improvements in health outcomes, while keeping pace with growing demands. "Its welcome news that the government is committed to redeveloping St. Paul's Hospital," said Providence Health Care CEO and President Dianne Doyle. "We look forward to working with the government around the next steps." Since 2001, the Government of British Columbia and its funding partners have invested more than $80 million in renovating and upgrading St. Paul's Hospital. This includes $17.2 million to replace aging electrical infrastructure and elevators; $14.7 million for emergency department renovations; $9 million on cardiac services, ambulatory redesign, ambulatory care clinic; $4.6 million for site consolidation and hemodialysis machines; and, $2.1 million for redesign of the surgical procedure rooms and outpatient department. What if there was something in there that didnt relate to that particular job at all? Many physically abusive parents and caregivers insist that their actions are simply forms of disciplineways to make children learn to behave. But there is a big difference between using physical punishment to discipline and physical abuse. The point of disciplining children is to teach them right from wrong, not to make them live in fear.

Promotion at the workplace, which is generally accepted as good news for one's wallet, is beneficial for health as well, a new study has revealed.
Those working in departments with high promotion rates were 20 percent less likely to develop heart disease as compared to those with little chance of improving their situation. Researchers studied the employment histories of 4,700 Whitehall civil servants and found those in departments with double the rate of promotion had around a 20 percent lower chance of being diagnosed with heart disease over the 15-year period of the study, from 1985 to 1999. The researchers, Sir Michael Marmot from the University College London and Michael Anderson from the University of California, Berkeley, took the existing prevalence of heart disease and the grade at which employees joined the civil service into account. This meant it was not simply the case that researchers found heart disease was less common in people who were originally healthier and from more privileged backgrounds. Previous research had found that Oscar winners outlive runners-up, Nobel Prize winners outlive nominees and baseball players who reach the Hall of Fame live longer than those who fall short. Sir Michael said the survey showed that 'favourable shocks can positively impact health'. They showed that a test called ocular pulse amplitude (OPA) could reliably detect carotid artery stenosis (CAS), a condition that clogs or blocks the arteries that feed the front part of the brain. It's a known risk factor for stroke. The OPA test could be performed by ophthalmologists ' physicians who treat eye diseases ' during routine exams. The study confirmed that patients who had the lowest OPA scores also had the most seriously blocked arteries. People with severe CAS are much more likely to suffer stroke. Physicians would like to catch and treat CAS before that can happen, but because CAS has no symptoms and an efficient test is not currently available, the disease often goes undetected. The Swiss research team used a device called the dynamic contour tonometer to check the OPA of 67 patients who were assumed to have CAS. The OPA score is calculated by finding the difference between the two pressure levels that occur inside the eye during the two phases of the heartbeat - the systolic and diastolic. The tonometer measures the two pressure levels, then instantly computes the patient's OPA score. When blood flow to the eye is blocked by CAS, there is not much difference between the two pressure levels, so the OPA score is low. The study confirmed that patients with the lowest OPA scores also had the most seriously blocked arteries. The researchers used ultrasound exams to corroborate that each study participant had CAS and to detail the severity of his or her blockage. 'Our results show that ocular pulse amplitude is a reliable, safe screening test for carotid artery stenosis. We recommend further study to confirm the value of using OPA to detect and assess the severity of CAS and to define its use in stroke prevention,' said lead researcher Pascal Bruno Knecht, M.D. A research review performed for the U.S Preventive Services Task Force indicated that if an efficient screening test for CAS were available, the incidence of stroke and fatalities due to stroke could be substantially reduced. The review stated that the test should be able to detect clinically significant CAS, defined as 60 percent to 99 percent blockage of the carotid arteries. Some high-tech tests, such as magnetic resonance angiography and color duplex ultrasound, already meet this standard, but they are expensive and not widely available. Their primary use is in diagnosing patients who already have symptoms of stroke. It could be efficient to perform the OPA test during a standard eye exam, if the ophthalmologist is already using the dynamic contour tonometer to screen for glaucoma. This type of tonometer is not widely used in the United States, although it is in Europe. The researchers say that other than CAS, very few diseases could cause low OPA scores, and that an ophthalmologist could easily rule out these other diseases during an eye exam.

(1956) and Guru Dutt classics such as Pyaasa (1957), 12 O'Clock (1958), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. Her other notable works include Solva Saal (1958), Baat Ek Raat Ki (1962), Kohra (1964), Guide (1965), Teesri Kasam (1966), Aadmi and Khamoshi (1969). Early life One of the most prominent actresses of the golden era, Waheeda Rehman was born into a traditional Urdu-speaking Muslim family in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, India. She and her sister learnt Bharatnatyam at Mumbai's Sri Rajarajeswari Bharata Natya Kala Mandir, where Guru T. K. Mahalingam Pillai, taught and performed on stage together. Her father, who was a District Commissioner, died while she was still in her teens. It is a common misconception that Rehman was born in Hyderabad. Its a long story, she says, When I was in Chennai, I did three to four Tamil and Telugu movies. In the first one, Kaalam Maari Pochu along with Gemini Ganesan a bilingual film which was made in Tamil and Telugu as Rojulu Maraayi, I did only a folk dance number in both Tamil and Telugu versions. However, it went on to become a hit! I was in Hyderabad celebrating its success and Guru Dutt happened to be there. He was on a lookout for new faces and heard that I could speak in Urdu. It is because he spotted me in Hyderabad that people
assume I was born there. Her dream was to become a doctor but, due to circumstances and illness, she abandoned this goal. Instead helped by her supportive parents, she hit the silver screen with Telugu films Jayasimha (1955), followed by Rojulu Marayi (1955) and Tamil film Kaalam Maari Pochu (1956). It is in Vijaya-Suresh combines Ram aur Shyam (Remake of Telugu movie Ramudu Bheemudu) in 1967 that Waheeda acted again under the direction of the topnotch Telugu director Tapi Chanakya who incidentally directed her movies Rojulu Maaraayi in Telugu (1955) and Kaalam Maaripochu in Tamil (1956). Career Waheeda Rehman, started her career in films in 1954 and her first successful films were the Telugu films Jayasimha (1955), followed by Rojulu Marayi (1955) and Tamil film Kaalam Maari Pochu (1956). In the success party of Rojulu Maaraayi, Guru Dutt noticed her and decided to groom her and make her act in Hindi Films. Waheeda considered Guru Dutt as her mentor. Ranbir Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha might not have acted in a film together, yet they were seen chatting throughout their flight to Singapore. Of course, they have a lot in common. Besides being star kids, they are both young, successful actors. It seems that on their way to Singapore to attend the IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) awards, Ranbir and Sonakshi unwittingly ended up on the same flight. And once they spotted each other, there was no stopping them. Sonakshi and Ranbir bonded throughout the flight. Talking on a serious note, the story of Rowdy Rathore goes illogical to some extent, but it won't disappoint you at all due to its desi packaging. Akshays moustache and garish look in the film as Rowdy works for the character and his action skills were never doubted by anyone. The film reaches an all time high due to the fun, action And Akki's dialogues. Verdict: Overall, Rowdy Rathore has the potential to set the cash registers ringing, provided it delivers what it promised. Rowdy Rathore is a total paisa wasool film, hence it's a must watch. Oh, and let us not forget Noomi Rapace as one of the team in grave peril from the moment she enters that strange landmass that is full of evil. A sense of foreboding devastation builds considerable tension throughout Prometheus. Done in both 2-D and 3-D here the effects arent as mind blowing as those found in Avatar. Still, as a space opera with full value horror suspense, Prometheus is a winner for fans of the Alien series sure to delight those into thinking adventures.

Canada Best G20 Country To Be A Woman, India Worst

Policies that promote gender equality, safeguards against violence and exploitation and access to healthcare make Canada the best place to be a woman among the worlds biggest economies, a global poll of experts showed on Wednesday. Infanticide, child marriage and slavery make India the worst, the same poll concluded. Germany, Britain, Australia and France rounded out the top five countries out of the Group of 20 in a perceptions poll of 370 gender specialists conducted by TrustLaw, a legal news service run by the Thomson Reuters Foundation. The United States came in sixth but polarized opinion due to concerns about reproductive rights and affordable healthcare. At the other end of the scale, Saudi Arabia where women are well educated but are banned from driving and only won the right to vote in 2011 polled second-worst after India, followed by Indonesia, South Africa and Mexico. India is incredibly poor, Saudi Arabia is very rich. But there is a commonality and that is that unless you have some special access to privilege, you have a very different future, depending on whether you have an extra X chromosome, or a Y chromosome, said Nicholas Kristof, journalist and co-author of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, commenting on the poll results. The poll, released ahead of a summit of G20 heads of state to be held in Mexico June 18-19, showed the reality for many women in many countries remains grim despite the introduction of laws and treaties on womens rights, experts said. In India, women and girls continue to be sold as chattels, married off as young as 10, burned alive as a result of dowry-related disputes and young girls exploited and abused as domestic slave labour, said Gulshun Rehman, health programme development adviser at Save the Children UK, who was one of those polled. This is despite a ground breaking progressive Domestic Violence Act enacted in 2005 outlawing all forms of violence against women and girls. TrustLaw asked aid professionals, academics, health workers, policymakers, journalists and development specialists with expertise in gender issues to rank the 19 countries of the G20 in terms of the overall best and worst to be a woman. They also ranked countries in six categories: quality of health, freedom from violence, participation in politics, work place opportunities, access to resources such as education and property rights and freedom from trafficking and slavery. Respondents came from 63 countries on five continents and included experts from United Nations Women, the International Rescue Committee, Plan International, Amnesty USA and Oxfam International, as well as prominent academic institutions and campaigning organizations. Representatives of faithbased organizations were also surveyed. The EU, which is a member of the G20 as an economic grouping along with several of its constituent countries, was not included in the survey. Canada was perceived to be getting most things right in protecting womens well-being and basic freedoms. While we have much more to do, women have access to healthcare, we place a premium on education, which is the first step toward economic independence and we have laws that protect girls and women and dont allow for child marriage, said Farah Mohamed, president and CEO of the Canada-based G(irls) 20 Summit, which organized a youth gathering that took place in Mexico in May, ahead of the G20 leaders meeting. Experts were divided on the situation in the United States. Civil rights and domestic violence laws, access to education, workplace opportunities and freedom of movement and speech were positive. But access to contraception and abortion were being curtailed and women suffered disproportionately from a lack of access to affordable healthcare, some experts said. Many of the gains of the last 100 years are under attack and the most overt and vicious attack is on reproductive rights, said Marsha Freeman, director of International Womens Rights Action Watch. BARRIERS TO DEVELOPMENT It is more vital than ever to protect womens freedoms at a time of political upheaval in several parts of the world, some experts said. Times of political transition, weve learned the hard way, can also be times of fragility, and when rights for women and girls can be rolled back instead of advanced, said Minky Worden, director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch. Womens rights are particularly under attack in G20 host country Mexico, which ranked 15th in the survey. Mexico has a culture of male chauvinism, high rates of physical and sexual violence and pockets of poverty where healthcare and other services are no better than in some of the most marginalized communities of Africa, experts said. Women are also victims of drug-related crime. Some 300 women were killed in 2011 in the violent border town of Ciudad Juarez with almost total impunity, said Amnesty USA. The violence affects men and women but often women disproportionately, added Worden. Mexico is a place where law enforcement remains a challenge, and the government has an obligation to protect women, but often fails in that obligation, as it does to protect men. Putting womens rights on the global agenda is the key to progress and to effective development, said Kristof. Countries that restrict womens rights and freedoms or fail to protect them from injustices will suffer long-term, socially and economically, he added. While the poll was based on perceptions and not statistics, U.N. data supports the experts views. The Gender Inequality Index (GII), which looks at reproductive health, the labour market and empowerment of women through education and politics, named the same three countries as the worst places for women, although Saudi Arabia ranked the absolute worst in the GII, followed by India. The GII, however, does not include gender-based violence or other elements such as the fact that many women carry additional burdens of caregiving and housekeeping. When it came to what country was best, the expert perception did not match U.N. data. The GII ranked Germany, France and South Korea as the top three countries, in that order. Canada came seventh and the United States was in tenth place. Activists were not surprised by the experts favourable view of Canada, however. Having an understanding of Canadian culture and tracking the work theyre doing around violence against women and gender equality, I believe that Canada really has been emerging as a model for what most countries should aspire to for a long time, said Jimmie Briggs, journalist, author and founder of the Man Up Campaign that works to engage youth to stop violence against women and girls. From the Opera House you can then take a leisurely walk through the Royal Botanic Gardens and on to the Domain, where the Art Gallery of New South Wales stands. You should see what the Art Gallery has to offer and view at least one of its many art displays such as the permanent exhibition of Aboriginal art at the Yiribana Gallery. Entry to the Art Gallery, except for certain special or visiting exhibitions, is free. Lunchtime? There is a fine restaurant at the gallery itself or you can cross the road to Pavilion in the Park.
At Darling Harbour there's the Chinese Garden, the Sydney Powerhouse Museum, Australian National Maritime Museum, Sydney Aquarium, Sydney Wildlife World, convention centre, exhibition halls, promenades, pubs, restaurants, shops, ferries, sailing ships.

Acura TSX up front in luxury sport sedan scene

"When all is said and done, Acuras real trump card with the TSX is its price."
The 2012 Acura TSX isnt defined so much by what it does have, but by what it doesnt have. Regardless of what trim you opt for, its easy to overlook the TSX, with it residing in a segment that includes the iconic BMW 3 Series and other worthy competitors such as the MercedesBenz C-Class, Audi A4, and more. Acuras sedan gets even more of a handicap considering its last major redesign was back in the 2009 model year. Since then, the second-generation model has received some changes, including the addition of Acuras new beak grille, as well as the option of a six-cylinder engine to keep up with what competitors offer. This weeks tester is the more fuelefficient and more affordable fourcylinder model, equipped with the Tech Package. Its this powertrain option that puts the TSX closer in line with similarly-equipped European juggernauts and fellow Japanese upstarts. Considering its relatively small displacement, the naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre offering under the hood of the TSX - the same engine that now resides in the Honda Civic Si - provides decent power for average everyday driving. Its rated at 201-horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque, and I wont lie - a little extra torque would certainly go a long way in keeping up with competitors. Opting for the Tech Package means you wont get a choice of transmissions; the only one offered is a five-speed automatic. Despite every competitor offering at least a six-speed, if not more, the five-speed holds its own, providing quick and smooth upshifts and downshifts. That said, the TSX lives and dies by the paddle shifters that come standard with the automatic transmission. Just like you wouldnt bring a knife to a gunfight, you wouldnt bring a strictly auto-only transmission to the luxury compact sport sedan segment. The best fuel economy numbers for the TSX are provided by the automatic, and while those numbers are indeed better than those of its competitors, Im sure an extra gear would help things immensely. Even my impressive final average of 8.7 L/100 km is admittedly assisted by a generous amount of highway driving. Handling is very good, with the vehicle exhibiting little body roll when pushed through corners, and speed-sensitive power steering is nice and direct. That said, BMW, Infiniti, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz all offer rear-wheel drive in their sedans, with the TSX only available in front-wheel drive. The Acura also isnt particularly shorter or lighter than others in the segment. Despite the sport sedan moniker, these vehicles clearly have a bias toward luxury, and the TSX is no exception. Ride is pliant over broken asphalt, and the sporty front seats, while extremely supportive for more performance-oriented driving, are still very comfortable and afford easy ingress and egress. Although the TSX is longer than a lot of competitors, stretching out the wheelbase would help with the good, but not great, passenger space. Rear door cut-outs dont make for easy entry

to the back seats, but once situated there, Im comfortable enough, with the top of my head just barely missing the ceiling. Ive always preferred the more hightech look in vehicles, so the interior, with its brushed metal, white stitching, single-tone black, and lack of wood is right up my alley. As with all cars under Hondas umbrella, its worth noting the TSX cockpit is very buttonheavy. I like this setup, but its a stark
contrast to interfaces such as BMWs iDrive or Audis MMI. When all is said and done, Acuras real trump card with the TSX is its price. While still a fine vehicle, it simply doesnt have the same cachet as other offerings, specifically those from Europe. And to truly reach the upper-echelon of luxury sport sedans, Acura needs to offer more of what drivers want. As it stands, the TSX is only partway there.

Andrew passed away at Surrey Hospital after a short illness. Funeral was held at Valley View on Sunday June 10th. Approximately 1150 people attended to pay their last respect. Andrew was the grandson on Late Mr. Budh Ram Singh and Mrs. Shiu Kumari Singh of Surrey BC and Mr. & Mrs. Ram Govind Singh of Calgary AB. He will be sadly missed by parents Jiten and Pratima Singh, brothers Jason and Nick Singh and beloved pet Junior and all those who loved him. Russia Fined For Fans' Attacks

UEFA fined the Russian soccer association $150,000 after its fans attacked stadium stewards following a match at Euro 2012. The incident occurred in Wroclaw, Poland after a 4-1 win over the Czech Republic on Friday as Russian fans were filmed fighting with stadium staff. Four stewards were treated for injuries at a hospital, although none were considered to be serious. In addition to the fine, Russia could be deducted six points in its Euro 2016 qualifying group for a repeat offense. Russia is also being investigated for claims that its fans racially abused Czech Republic defender Theodor Gebre Selassie, who is black, while further "improper conduct" charges could follow for the behavior of Russian fans during a 1-1 draw with Poland on Tuesday.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman presents the Conn Smythe Trophy to Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick after his team defeated the Devils in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup final at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, To the surprise of absolutely no one, Jonathan Quick was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as most valuable player in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Really, there wasnt another choice, was there? Oh, Captain Dustin Brown had terrific playoff moments and was a huge part of the Los Angeles Kings' dominant 6-1 win over the New Jersey Devils Monday night, and Drew Doughty has once again confirmed his place as the next great defenceman in hockey. But over four rounds, and 16 wins by the Kings, it was the goaltender Quick who was the constant game-to-game, series-to-series Quick ended the playoffs with a miraculous 1.41 goals against average and a post-season leading .946 goals-against average, making it the second straight year that an American goaltender was awarded the Conn Smythe without any real debate. In the four wins by the Kings in the final, Quick allowed three goals in almost 14 periods of play. In winning the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe, something he can now share with his goaltending coach, Bill Ranford, who won both himself, the soft-spoken and often unemotional Quick talked about the journey that took the Kings from also-rans to Stanley Cup champions. He also talked about winning the first three games of the series, thinking it was over, then losing two straight and clawing their way back to victory Monday night. You keep pushing (the Stanley Cup) out of your mind when youre on the ice. It will creep back in (your head). Especially when you get that four goal lead. You know, its hard for it not to creep into your head a little bit. But I just reminded myself how dangerous they were. And then he celebrated, first by winning the Cup, but before Commissioner Gary Bettman gave that out, he presented Quick with the Conn Smythe. If it wasnt for him, were not in the playoffs, said Willie Mitchell, the veteran Kings defenseman who was in tears on the ice post-game. He was our MVP in the season, our MVP in the playoffs. The right guy won the award.

L.A. Kings Win First Stanley Cup In Team's History

The Los Angeles Kings' 45-year Stanley Cup quest ended in a triumphant flurry of blood, sweat and power-play goals. After missing two chances to claim the title last week, the long-suffering Kings are NHL champions for the first time. Hooray for Hockeywood. Jeff Carter and Trevor Lewis scored two goals apiece, playoff MVP Jonathan Quick made 17 saves in his latest stellar performance, and the Kings beat the New Jersey Devils 6-1 Monday night in Game 6 of the finals, becoming the first eighthseeded playoff team to win the league title. Captain Dustin Brown had a goal and two assists for Los Angeles, which ended its dominant postseason run before a frenzied bunch of its heartiest fans, incessantly waving towels and glowsticks. The crowd including several dozen Kings faithful who have been at rink side since the team's berth as an expansion franchise in 1967, waiting for one glimpse of the Stanley Cup. After taking a 3-0 series lead and then losing two potential clinching games last week, the Kings finished ferociously at Staples Center just when the sixth-seeded Devils appeared to have a chance for one of the biggest comebacks in finals history. One penalty abruptly changed the tone of the series. Brown, Carter and Lewis scored during a five-minute power play in the first period after Steve Bernier was ejected for boarding Rob Scuderi, leaving

Featherweight champ Jose Aldo has been forced to withdraw due to injury from his title defense bout against Erik Koch originally slated for the July 21 event. Top billing will now go to an interim bantamweight title bout between Urijah Faber and Renan Barao. The Faber-Barao tilt was originally slated for UFC 148 on July 7 but was moved to shore up some top names to a Calgary card that has been plagued with injury and lineup changes. Earlier in the week, Thiago Silva was scratched from the co-main event against Mauricio Shogun Rua due to injury. Rua was subsequently removed from the card to headline the UFCs Aug. 4 event in Los Angeles against Brandon Vera. An injury also forced Brit scrapper Michael The Count Bisping from his fight against Tim Boetsch. UFC newcomer and former Bellator and Pride veteran Hector Lombard will replace Bisping. Thiago Alves who was originally set to face Yoshihiro Akiyama until an injury forced the Japanese fighter from the card was himself injured and removed from the Calgary show. Us Open: Paul Casey Replaced By Andy Zhang Aged 14
A 14-year-old will replace injured Englishman Paul Casey in this year's US Open which started on Thursday. China-born Florida-based Andy Zhang, who had missed out on qualifying in his own right in a play-off, is the competition's youngest player since the Second World War. Casey, 34, dislocated his shoulder snowboarding on Christmas Eve and is not fully fit to play in San Francisco. "It's affecting my ability to be ready for the test of a major," he said. Zhang, who was second reserve, beats the record of Tadd Fujikawa, who was 15 when he qualified for the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot. "[When I got the call] my mind just went blank," said Zhang. "Then, I said "Wait! What? I am in the US Open?" He is due to play a practice round with Masters Champion Bubba Watson on Tuesday, prompting his caddie Christopher Gold to say: "You can play with whomever you want. Why not Bubba?" Zhang's coach Andrew Park said: "Andy hits it miles and miles. "He's got a very good head on his shoulders. He couldn't speak any English when he got here, and now we can't keep him quiet."
