INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS WEEK: Doing Business in China (Shanghai / Hongkong) in cooperation with Fudan University www.ti.bfh.ch/emba-im
Course description: Every fifth inhabitant of the earth is Chinese. The economy of the country has been booming with an annual growth of round 10% for some years now. Individual business capitals are growing much more intensely. Throughout the world, China is the country with the strongest economic development at present. For most of the Swiss companies, the question to enter into a commitment in this large and booming market of China will sooner or later arise. In order to be able to answer this question, the decision-makers must be able to understand the possibilities of business activities in China, and assess the prospects and risks connected therewith. Wherein lays the attractiveness of this country for foreign companies? In addition to the high market growth, China has tremendous human resources at its disposal. The government invests heavily in education, and is, therefore, bringing about a rise in the level of education. Indeed, labor costs are increasing, but are still comparatively low. Many Chinese want to improve their status, and are ready to contribute an extraordinary work-input for that. Thus, for Swiss companies, China is gaining in importance on one or more levels along the value chain of procurement, production and distribution. Ba in Design Management
Title of Study programme: Ba HSLU in Design Management Course description: The BA Design Management is a unique course, which enables students to apply their design and organisational skills to the management of design projects and the tactical design planning in design agencies and companies. It combines theory and practice from various disciplines like design, business and economy, engineering and communication in order to provide a profound understanding of the areas where design, technology and management meet. And it teaches the necessary skills to manage the interface between these fields and to facilitate their collective actions concerning design. It is develops the knowledge of pragmatic design practice, which enables students to manage design projects by using processes and methods based on clear argumentation and reasoning. It is completely taught in English and students from Switzerland, Europe and overseas are welcome: a multicultural classroom will therefore create a real 'live' learning situation, in a discipline that is increasingly becoming economically viable world-wide. What is design management? The goal of design management is to support companies in such a way that they can achieve their strategic goal - for instance to create a loyal and motivated customer-base, or providing a consistent brand experience - through the optimal employment of design. To achieve this, design management undertakes various tasks on all levels in business (from operational through tactical to strategic) and in all its activities (from research to sales and service). Design management plans, coordinates and steers all design activities, safeguarding that they all serve the strategic goal of a company, business or brand. Design management uses design methodologies in the fields of products, services, brands, corporate identities and communications and optimizes the interdependent processes, from market evaluation to market introduction. Design management is an elementary part of a companys vision creation and caters for coherent and consistent customer experience at all touch-points. Why this course? Design management, as well as design driven innovation and design thinking, is actually still quite a new concept: many companies only recently have experienced that, in view of increasingly demanding consumers, tougher market conditions and shrinking resources, competitive advantage can be achieved through the strategic deployment of design, as opposed to applying it as decoration. Design has become a central part of a companys strategy to solve these challenges and with that to remain relevant for customers and stakeholders. This has led to an increased demand towards design as a function: next to providing out-standings design-skills, design also has to understand and speak the business' language, so that it can act like a business function. In here design management comes into play - it enables the optimal interaction between design and corporations and enables design to become a (corporate) business function. That is why the bachelor course DMI (Design Management, International) puts the emphasis on the ability to think, plan and act in an interdisciplinary and people-oriented way: the students are educated to become generalists in the field of business administration, development and design, but they acquire a specialization: they understand how designers work and reason and share their empathy for human needs. That's why they can enable design as a strategic resource and tool, by which companies can achieve a coherent, consistent and relevant display of value to the market and their customers. This specialization forms the basis for their actions as a facilitator, driver or leader of design activities within companies, depending on the seniority level they operate. Ma ZFH in Composition/Theory
Title of Study programme: Ma ZFH in Composition/Theory, in cooperation with Berne University of the Arts (HKB)
Course objectives Composition/Theory is one of the three main areas of tertiary music education, comprising performance, teaching, and creation. The interactions between the various Masters degrees in these areas are decisive for every modern conservatory. These dynamics promote competition amongst students and successfully enhance their skills: those composing music for others develop a better understanding of performance; those conversant with how works are composed today can better appraise their own performance and the historical repertoire; those learning to reflect on their own skills will be able to better convey content. Such skills development presupposes solid all-round musical training, which the BA courses existing at both universities provide. The MA Composition/Theory is run jointly with Berne University of the Arts (HKB). The various core subjects complement each other perfectly. Students also benefit from the MA course being based at the ZHdK, which by assembling all the arts, theatre, dance, film, media and design under roof is a powerhouse of arts education and cultural development, providing students with outstanding conditions. MA Composition/Theory students thus benefit from the singular opportunities afforded by two Swiss arts universities championing interdisciplinarity. Employment opportunities Composing is an exacting profession, requiring excellent practical skills, creative potential, and comprehensive knowledge of contemporary production. Composers must be able to produce music expediently for a broad range of events, needs, and audiences. Coursework allows students to deepen their own aesthetic stance and idiom, and leads them to future professional roles. Students must be able to tackle assignments with utmost precision and formulate answers with as much acumen. Composing contemporary music (in a narrow sense) and producing music for more ready use demand both skills. The course places great emphasis on practice-oriented interdisciplinary training. Course structure The MA Composition/Theory combines those courses focusing on composition and music theory. The notion of composition covers the traditional practise of writing music down on paper over setting pictures to music to computer-based sound synthesis to composing music for stage performance. Specialization Composition and Theory Composition and Media Technology Core subject Composition (HKB, ZHdK) Thtre musical (HKB) Theory (ZHdK) Electroacoustical Composition (ZHdK) Sound Engineering (ZHdK) Composition for Film, Theatre, Media (ZHdK) Jazz Composition & Arrangement (HKB)
