in Electrical Engineering (Electrical Power Systems) Introduction, Scope and Objective of Programme The recent advances in electrical power systems have enormous impact on the way of power generation transmission and distribution. The worldwide power sector is in the process of reforms through deregulation and restructuring. As a result the environment faced by electric utilities and their operating procedures have changed drastically. Extra high voltages are necessary for transfer of bulk amount of power over longer distances. The modern electrical power system is in the form of a large interconnected network for economy and reliable operation. For system interconnections between two or more independently controlled AC networks, HVDC links are preferred due to technical and economic superiority over equivalent EHVAC transmission links. This programme focuses on imparting education in the field of Electrical Power Systems viz Advanced Power System Operation and Control, Modern Power System Protection and Switchgear, Extra High Voltage AC and DC Transmission System, Power System Stability Studies, Analysis, modeling and simulation of power system equipments/ components, Substation Automation, Restructured Power System etc. Course Structure Semester-I Advanced Power System Operation and Control Advanced Protective Relaying and Switchgear Power System Dynamics EHV AC and HVDC Transmission Applied Linear Algebra and Matrix Computations Communication Skills for Engineers (Supplementary Course) Semester-II Computer Aided Power System Analysis Advanced Power System Stability Power Electronics in Power System Substation Engineering and Automation Power System Simulation Lab Energy Management Elective Power System Transients Digital Signal Processing and its Applications Power System Reliability Restructured Power System Semester-IV Major Project Part-II (full time)

Semester-III Major Project Part-I (full time) PG Project Areas

Following are some of the areas in which students can undertake their major project work: Power generation, transmission and distribution system Power system operation, analysis and simulation Power system stability Power system dynamics, control and optimization Modern power system protection, Instrumentation and control High voltage engineering aspects, HVDC Power system designing, planning and reliability Power quality and FACTs technology Smart grid, SCADA in power and energy sector Distributed generation Laboratory Facilities Well-developed laboratories having latest equipments being used by various industries. The experimental setups for explaining schemes of over current, distance, and differential protection relaying system,

synchronization of alternators, high voltage generation and testing enable students to carry out experiments and projects very effectively. The PG software laboratory is equipped with latest computing facilities including software tools like ETAP, MATLAB, ANSYS, MAGNET, PSIM and SPEED etc. The following laboratories are existing with all the latest equipments. Switchgear and Protection Lab. High Voltage Lab. Electrical Machines Power Electronics & Drives PG Software Lab. Advanced Microprocessor and Instrumentation Placement Foreseeing the multiplying demand of electrical power and upcoming power projects in the country and Gujarat, the proposed PG programme is designed to cater to the needs of such power infrastructure industries and utilities. The restructured power industry in Gujarat and in the country needs engineers to build plants and system, maintain its stability, offer minimum outages and ensure long life of the equipments. Hence, the intended course mainly focuses on protection of power system, switchgear, system, modeling, analysis and simulations of various equipments, components and conditions. The curriculum motivates student to solve problems analytically, develop research capabilities, visualize actual conditions / possibilities and ways to mitigate them. Students groomed under this programme will be technically fitting for the various job openings in some of the leading companies / organizations listed below: Tata Power, NHPC, NTPC, Torrent Power, Adani Power, Suzlon Energy, State Electricity Companies, ERDA, T&R, GEDA, ABB, Areva T&D, Jay Shree Insulators, Jyoti Ltd., Essar Group of Companies, Crompton Greaves, Reliance Energy, BHEL, Power Grid, CPRI, CERC, BEE etc. Faculty Name Prof. A.
