Introduction to Facial Feminisation Surgery (FFS)

Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS) is the term given to a set of surgical procedures that aim to modify a masculine face or one with highly pronounced features in order to achieve a softened and harmonized reflection, more in accordance with modern standards of femininity. In recent years the facial skeleton has been treated almost exclusively by maxillofacial or craniofacial surgeons. What to keep in mind
The objective of the FFS specialist is to harmonize aspects of the facial skeleton which are predisposed by genetics or conditioned by hormonal impulses in puberty to become over-developed.
We should emphasize the importance that the feminization specialist thoroughly evaluates each case on an individual basis, since facial dynamics and proportions vary widely. It is not correct to apply the same treatment to all faces, instead of only the precise procedures truly needed. For example, some women require prominent jaw angles as they are consistent with the rest of the facial architecture, while others require a refining of the mandibular contours to obtain balanced proportions in accordance with a more oval face. Bone Sculpture Maxillofacial & Craneofacial

By working directly on the bone surface, the surgeon is able to modify the shape and volume, sculpting it into the desired form.
The bodys skin, fat, muscle and tendon (soft tissues) suffer exposure to numerous destructive agents such as repeated contraction, liquid retention, gravitational effect, loss of elasticity and cohesive properties and more. These factors make it difficult to predict the long-term effects of a surgery on these tissues. In comparison, the skeleton is not sensitive to the same change vectors, meaning the sculpted bone remains unchanged over time. The Facial Team Experience

Welcome! A Typical Surgical Visit in Spain
Day 1 : Preoperative Consultation Preoperative exams are performed early in the day. Depending on your flight, you may come directly to the Hospital where your pre-operative consultation takes place. During this meeting with the surgeons you will confirm the treatment plan and discuss the procedures in fine detail. The patient coordinator will help you with the schedule during this week.

Normally, hospitalisation is for 1 to 3 nights, depending on the extent of surgery and your recuperation.

Day 2 : Surgery You will meet with the surgeons prior to the surgery for pre-op planning. One hour before surgery, the patient coordinator will accompany you to Admissions. Immediately after surgery, a specially designed cooling mask is applied and kept on for 24-hours. After a few hours in observation, the patient is transferred to their private room. The postoperative stay in hospital is usually 1 to 3 nights, depending on the extent of the surgery and your condition. The surgeons, nurses, anaesthesiologist and the patient coordinator will be visiting you routinely during your stay in the hospital.

Day 3-4: Return to Hotel If you come alone, a taxi will take you to your Hotel with the option of having a nurse escort initially. Our patients coordinators are in contact 24hours a day so you may rest comfortably and safely. Day 4 -9: Aftercare Check ups will be required periodically. You will always be only one phone call away, 24 hours a day, as we will lend you a mobile phone. Day 10 - 14: Stitch Removal & Departure You will be evaluated by the surgeons prior to leaving. The nurse will remove any stitches, staples and bandages remaining. The patient coordinator will give you any authorizations and medical prescriptions needed. Follow-Up: The coordinator will maintain contact in the event of any doubts. Upon request, we will provide a before-after photo collage. We recommend an evaluation of results at 3, 6, and 12 months, preferrably in person, but also possible by phone, Messenger, Skype and emailed photos.

The patient coordinator will take care of any authorisations or prescriptions you may require, as well as support you in organising the visit.

Virtual FFS*
A Digital Vision of Results
As part of the evaluation process, we may recommend the creation of a photo simulation of the estimated results. This is a digital surgery* produced by Alexandra Hamer, master in facial gender differences who also provides a professional second opinion completely independent from FACIAL TEAM. Although an approximation, Virtual FFS combined with our surgical evaluation gives patients a highly-qualified global perspective regarding their own FFS. Ask for details.

The Postoperative Period

Swelling and Bruising - We utilize a special cooling mask, placed immediately after surgery and used almost constantly for the first 24 hours. This mask keeps the surface tissues at the optimum temperature to reduce swelling, bruising and alleviate discomfort due to the operation.Bruising and swelling will peak 2-3 days following surgery and will subside about 7-10 days later. Some swelling may be evident for several weeks after surgery; especially following augmentation or bone reconstruction surgery. However, any residual swelling lasting more than a month is minimal and not usually noticeable to others. Pain - The pain is surprisingly moderate with facial feminization. Most patients will experience discomfort more than pain, which is usually perfectly controlled with normal painkillers. However, if you continue to experience pain, you should inform us. Pain medication is generally not needed after 1 - 2 weeks. Work and Sports - We highly recommend total rest and relaxation for two full weeks following surgery. Travelling is permitted after one week. After two weeks you may resume: high-demand driving, sedentary work, and light exercise like slow walking. Intense exercise (i.e. running, Pilates) may be resumed 6 weeks following surgery, depending on your recovery. Yoga, especially upside-down poses, should be avoided for 8-10 weeks. Ask us if you plan to do any high impact or full contact sport soon. Sun Avoid sun exposure to the surgical area for six weeks and use sunscreen, even on cloudy days on incisions for at least one year. Smoking - As smoking counteracts the healing of wound, we strongly recommend not smoking 3 weeks before and after surgery.
