A Case Study
One of the client was having a Excel base quotation generator / price calculator.

3.1 Current applications challenges/problems

Sales people are distributed at various locations Company was not able to check whether sales person is using updated version of Price Calculator or out dated one. Sometimes, if the older version is used and price ref. is not updated in such condition Sales people were quoting lower price. Once quotation is released company was losing revenue due to under pricing. The Calculator was dependant on several other modules for design specification. Like Noise calculation, Strength calculation etc. All these calculations were based on Size, Temperature, specified standard or the instrument and other parameters. These calculations were part of other module and needed to feed values from spread sheet to the relevant module and again the results from those modules needed to consider back before releasing the quotation. When end customers ask for some special requests on his order, these things are supposed to be verified by the Head Office and price calculation may differ in certain case. Once order is taken the relevant data needed to feed to ERP / CRM system. Old quotation / order placed were not quickly searchable. Sometimes quotations were needed to update at later stage and client was willing track changes in records done by whom and when.

3.2 How the .Net Application improved process/performance

WPF form based application improved GUI and Client was able to control application version easily. All the lookup and reference tables went to Central repository so, under pricing, obsolete product specification etc issues were resolved. Any update in product specification or price is quickly reflected.

User rights were defined so data becomes more secure and any changes in quotation were recorded in the system. As soon as sales person upload quotation to central system, HO is able to make notes and update the quotation if needed for any special request. Pending quotation can be taken care by Sales Manager easily. Now sales team performance measurement is quickly done. Strength/Noise Calculation etc. are done through previously developed add-on modules and these add-ons can be upgraded without altering the .Net Application. Application will be able to get update if there are any update in .Net Framework. Whenever HO approves any Quotation and if customer accepts the same it will be quickly feed to ERP/CRM system. Benefit of WPF: o o Rich application text on the form makes GUI more attractive. WPF help the GUI making it device in-dependant, like we used to see webpage on large screen desktop, laptop, net top, tablet, mobile without hurting content orientation (Flexible content model). It can take advantage of accelerated GPU power. Data Binding is more powerful then windows form. Separate Business logic from UI logic using XAML. It helps to make application robust and reduces changes of bug introduction.

Benefit of .Net Framework: o o o Direct support of security. Run time diagnosis support, like event logging, performance counters. The program code is managed source code so all the thread, program memory etc. are managed by .Net Framework. Hence no more memory leak and will not crash/unstable clients systems. Installation is simpler, mean conflict of dependency issues will not be there or lesser. .Net Application can take all the benefit of current new operating system as well as future operating systems.
