We have further developed and extended our fishing rod programme for the 2008 season on the basis of our existing programme. Individual rod series have been expanded at the request of our anglers and new rods designed for successful angling methods. They are all in conformity with the worldwide recognised SPORTEX tradition with their unique action character and their high quality and fine finish. What one should know about fishing rods:
Rod material:
The fishing rod is one of man's oldest hunting tools. In Europe these "fishing rods" were still made out of willow, hazelnut or juniper until about 150 years ago. Since at the time fishing reels had not been invented, they could only be fitted with a line the same length as the rod made out of braided hemp or silk with which the bait was presented, either sunk or dipped. One of the most important criteria of a fishing rod is its bending performance the action. For practical angling use, as a rule rods with semiparabolic action are the right choice.

As a result of our HT- rossWinding C blank winding technology SPORTEX rods have a semi-parabolic action which guarantees rod speed, casting precision, stamina and feeling with maximum energy transmission. We combine this semi-parabolic action with a purposeful tip action in our special rods such as TEAM WALLER, our contact rods for Zander and for jerk bait angling.

The worldwide, unique quality and action of our rods is based on the one hand on the choice of the best carbon material with a high volume percentage of fibre and on the other in the careful processing during manufacture. At SPORTEX the carbon fibres are installed in one direction around the core of the rod, so that they run as far as possible parallel to the rod axis. This increases the stability and strength of the blank. With high modular carbon bands wound crosswise, this compound is tempered in stages. As a result the blank is hardened specifically and retains its elasticity and resilience even with extreme use over many years. Only very few manufacturers use this very time-costly process, but for SPORTEX rods it guarantees their well-known longevity and reliability. You can recognise our rods by their visually striking cross winding. It is not decorative winding, but a constructional power winding which guarantees resilience and stability.

Line guides
The first guides were made of brass, nickel or steel wire, which basically corresponded with our rings nowadays in design as guide or coil rings. They were substantially heavier and in addition, only partly able to deal with the friction of the flowing line. Many of our older anglers are still familiar with the first guides with ceramic inserts. After longer periods of angling these guides cut and were responsible for fish losses as a result of the damage to the line. Nowadays, aluminium oxide (Hardloy) is used as the insert for inexpensive standard guides. Rings with silicon carbide (SIC) or Alconite inserts are better and lighter. As a result of their extremely smooth surfaces and the high level of heat dissipation these materials comply outstandingly with the exacting requirements demanded by monofilament and multifilament lines for guides. For the guides of our SPORTEX rods we only use high quality Fuji SIC guides, the even narrower SIC gunsmoke guides or alconite guides. The high level of heat dissipation of these inserts is the requirement for our rods being equally well suited for the

Care of your rod

You should follow a few basic rules for handling and taking care of your rod so that you can enjoy it for many years to come: - Clean the rod under running water and dry after each use in saltwater. - From time to time you should protect the rod surface with rod wax or Ballistol. - High quality carbon rods are extremely break-resistant but sensitive to impact. Check for cracks or pressure marks after the rod has been hit or dropped. In these instances the rod could also break subsequently after long use. Try to avoid dropping your rod onto hard ground or stones. Check the guides for possible damage to the insert. - The carbon material is electrically conductive. For your safety avoid angling under current conduction and do not fish during thunderstorms.

The first big step for our modern rods which facilitate casting the line with a reel was the invention of the spliced rod by a Mr Higginbotham, who glued cut splices from imported wood in a triangular shape and consequently prepared the way for dynamic casting rods. Today, in modern rod building materials such as carbon fibre, kevlar, glass fibre and their compounds are used. The choice of these materials is of paramount importance for the quality of the rods and their price. Here, the density of the warp threads and weft threads of the matting and the quality of the resins used with which this fibre compound is processed for the rod blank are decisive.

Tip action:
The rod works principally in the tip section. The remaining section of the rod hardly moves at all.

Semi-parabolic action:
The rod bends from the tip to approximately half the rod. The lower section remain slightly stiff. The ideal action for fast rods.

Parabolic action:
The design of the blank is calculated in such a way that the rod builds up its dynamics and energy for casting starting from the tip through the middle section into the hand unit. The entire rod bends when playing the fish.

These high quality spinning rods 275 to 365 cm in length with an ideal casting weight of 80 g have the SPORTEX specific, semi-parabolic action, which facilitates the sensitive guidance of heavy spoons and twisters and which work throughout from the butt to the tip whilst playing the fish. The lb specification corresponds with the weight which is necessary in order to bend the tip of a rod held horizontally downwards exactly at 90. You can determine the maximum casting weight in gram by multiplying the specified test curve weight (e. g. 2 lb) with 453.6 (907.2) and dividing it by 16, i.e., a rod with a test curve of 2 lb has a maximum casting weight of 56.7 gram.
