Everyone loves a comeback

story, and Gov. Christie believes

New Jerseys has just begun.
He touted the first steps of the
New Jersey comeback in front
of hundreds last week at the Had-
donfield Middle School auditori-
um. It was the 83rd town hall
meeting that Christie has hosted
since his tenure as this states
governor.
The last time he had been in
Haddonfield? May of 2009 when
he stood at the steps of the Had-
donfield Borough Hall and accept-
ed an endorsement for governor
by the then-governor of Massa-
chusetts Mitt Romney.
He returned the favor and en-
dorsed Romney for the Republi-
can presidential candidacy in Oc-
tober of 2011.
In the hot, muggy auditorium
Christie said the next 19 days for
the state would be him against
the Assembly Democrats in Tren-
ton. Its those Democrats, he said,
that are holding up the fiscal year
2013 budget, which includes in-
come tax relief for every New Jer-
seyan.
The Legislature is like a kid
with a book report, Christie said.
It got its assignment in January
with a June 30 deadline and has
waited until the final minute to
finish the report. For the 2013
budget, Christie proposed a $32.1
billion budget, which he said rep-
resents a smaller budget than the
fiscal year of 2008.
There are 19 days lefts for the
Legislature to provide tax relief
for the citizens of New Jersey,
Christie said.
In his budget address in Febru-
ary, Christie called for a 10-per-

The results are in, as the
state released its findings from
the 2010-2011 New Jersey De-
partment of Education Report
Cards. Haddonfield School Dis-
trict students once again per-
formed well in the statewide
assessments.
The annual New Jersey Re-
port Card study is a state-man-
dated program that districts
have been utilizing since 1995.
The department presents 35
different fields of information
for each school and compares
the results to district factor
group and state averages.
Several categories are con-
sidered within the study, in-
cluding district finances, stu-
dent performance indicators,
school environment, class
sizes, and the students them-
selves, according to depart-
ment representatives.
Haddonfield Memorial High
School students again outper-
formed the state average for
SAT scores, with Haddonfield
students averaging a total
score of 1,714. The average is
11 points lower than the 2009-
2010 school average, but is still
the highest score in Camden
County school districts. The
average state SAT total score is
1,508.

aged 577 in math, 568 in verbal,

cent income tax cut for all resi-
dents of the state to be phased in
over three years. The proposal, he
said, would give taxpayers $9.35
billion in relief over the next
decade.
The state has a June 30 dead-
line to pass the budget.
Now is the time for us to give
you money back. Its time for us
to cut taxes, he said to a round of
applause.
He chastised Assembly Majori-
ty Leader Louis Greenwald (D-
Camden/Burlington) for delaying
the proposed tax cut and de-
scribed Greenwald as wanting to
lower taxes by raising taxes for
state residents.
You know that bridge in Tren-
ton that says what Trenton makes
the world takes? Christie asked
the crowd. The only thing Tren-
ton makes these days is stupid
ideas. Thats our main export.
Christie addressed the state
health and pension costs that ran
rampant throughout New Jersey
prior to his term. To combat
costs, he signed into law biparti-
san pension and health benefit re-
form legislation, which saw state
employees contributing more to
their health insurance costs and
paying more into their pensions.
The majority of public em-
ployees in this state paid zero for
their healthcare costs, Christie
said, joking that if he offered that
right now to anyone in the audito-
rium they would jump at the
chance for the deal.
Through these pension and
healthcare reforms, Christie said
that the changes have allowed
Haddonfield to save $400,000 this
year alone.

ran wild during the past 10 years
is of the utmost importance, he
said, and will help in reducing the
states high property taxes.
But while keeping these costs
down, Christie said its his inten-
tion to increase much-needed
funding to all of the state school
districts, instead of just the 31 Ab-
bott Districts.
About 63 percent of all school
funding goes to these 31 districts,
Christie said, while the remain-
ing 500 plus districts share the left
over 37 percent of state funding.
For 2013, Christie is proposing
that the Haddonfield School Dis-
trict receive an increase of more
than $208,000 in state aid, up to a
total of $846,128.
School aid will be increased in
Haddonfield by 32.5 percent, he
said.
While on the subject of school,
Christie addressed an audience
members question and said that
the state needs to do more to weed
out ineffective tenured teachers
that are costing the state millions
in taxes.
Tenure reform is incredibly
important, he said, and pointed to
the Newark School District. Right
now there are over 100 tenured
teachers in the district that are
being paid to stay at home be-
cause the district has determined
that its better to pay these teach-
ers than to let them be at the front
of a classroom and continue to do
a poor job.
After three years and a day
teachers have 100 percent job se-
curity for life, he said. Only 17
teachers lost their tenure last
year due to performance evalua-
tions.
Its important to reward the ex-
cellent teachers in the state, he
said, which is why he trumps
merit pay for educators.
If youre doing better youre
paid more. The unions, though,
say we cant figure out the effec-
tive and ineffective teachers in
the state, he said. It doesnt take
parents long to know if their kids
get the good or bad teacher.
Maybe by the first parent-teacher
night at the school.
Teachers in front of a class-
room are the most important fac-
tor in education and a school, he
said, the best should be paid bet-
ter than the ineffective.
As he took questions for more
than an hour from the assembled
crowd, he delighted the audience
when he called up a young third-
grade student named Rebecca
Casper to the front of the room.
My teacher asked my class
who the governor of New Jersey
was and I was the only one who
knew, she said, as Christie
laughed at her answer.
After more than two hours
Christie thanked the group for lis-
tening to him talk about the state
in the hot auditorium. Being gov-
ernor can be an isolating experi-
ence, he said, and many days the
only people he sees are his staff
and family. Getting out into the
fabric of a community in the
town hall meetings keep you
grounded, he said, and let you
know what is really affecting the
state.

Gold heads to U.S.
Open as caddie
One young Haddonfield athlete
is heading to the U.S. Open. Not as
a golfer, but as the manager, train-
er, and caddie for the youngest
athlete ever to qualify for one of
the most prestigious golf tourna-
ments in America.
Chris Gold, a 25-year-old golfer
and graduate of Haddonfield Me-
morial High School, has been
training 14-year-old Andy Zhang
for the past five months. Not even
old enough to drive, buy a scratch
off lottery ticket, or attend an R-
rated movie, Zhang will tee it up
on Thursday at 8:21 a.m. for the
first round of the 112th U.S. Open
at the Olympic Club in San Fran-
cisco.
Gold will caddie for Zhang dur-
ing the event. He caddies for the
young golfer as often as he can,
Gold said, but many of the junior
tournaments that he participates
in dont allow caddies.
Zhang is the youngest athlete
to every qualify for the U.S. Open.
To put it in perspective, Tiger
Woods, arguably the greatest
golfer of all time, was 20 when he
made his U.S. Open debut in 1997.
He was, however, coming off a
record setting Masters victory, so
he has Zhang beat in that regard.
Its been a fantastic few days,
Gold said, as the pair werent sure
that they were even going to be in-
vited to the U.S. Open. After win-
ning their way through the local
qualifying round, Zhang was one
of the top five finishers out of 83
Nationwide Tour golfers in the
sectional tournament.
Zhang shot a 69 in a local quali-
fier and then 70, 72 in two section-
al rounds. He lost in a playoff, but
was able to secure the fifth overall
finish and claimed the second al-
ternate position.
The championship event is the
only truly open USGA tourna-
ment, with amateurs like Zhang
able to play if they make the cut.
Other championship tourna-
ments are only open to golfers
with PGA or Nationwide Tour
cards.
Due to two golfers dropping out
because of injury, Gold said he re-

Why is artificial turf being
considered, writer asks
I am writing to support Robin Potters
letter to editor. Why is artificial turf even
being considered as a playing surface for
any public area? Artificial turf is consid-
ered a toxic and painful playing surface.
The long-gone Veterans Stadium was de-
tested by professional athletes for many
reasons, one being the artificial turf.
This town needs a lot of things to be
fixed, upgraded and introduced.
Artificial turf is not one of them, espe-
cially to the tune of $500,000 in taxpayer
money.
Debbie Brodsky
Kasko was principled in calling
for more talks on fields
Gee whiz, you just cant know how tick-
led red I was when Mrs. (Tish) Colombi de-
clared herself a big fan of turf fields.
And with that, she and her sidekick, Eddie
Borden, voted to approve a raid on the bor-
ough treasury to help fund field upgrades
at the high school and the adjoining prac-
tice field owned by the borough.
Field quality has long been an issue
among sports advocates in Haddonfield.
That the fields in focus are in deplorable
condition speaks loudly to the need for im-
provement.
But those enhancements should not be
made at the expense of the democratic
process. Not everyone in town is a sports
fanatic, like the mayor and me. Commis-
sioner Jeff Kasko took a very principled
stand, calling for more public discussion
than this legislative railroading allowed.
While for the betterment of the main
field, I am opposed to using public money
on the practice field. Seriously, in this case,
we are talking about practice.
In these economic times, you gotta have
a loaf and a half, not just the whole loaf ?
People can decide whether or not to sup-
port private efforts to fund main field im-
provement.
Borden and Colombi deprive opponents
of publicly funding the practice field a
voice in how their tax dollars are expend-
ed.
Jack Kirkwood
Voters should remember
disregard for public
In the June 6-12 issue of The Sun, Com-
missioner Kasko apologetically discussed
the secretive process by which the borough
commissioners and school board decided
to allocate upward of $600,000 of taxpayer
money toward installing artificial turf
fields.
It is probably safe to assume many Had-
donfield residents like us were blindsided
by this decision and, to put it gently, feel as
if they have just had their pockets picked.
Curiously, the Haddonfield Turf Field
Committee letter to the board of educa-
tion dated May 7, (posted on the Haddon-
field Schools website) is the only docu-
ment available to the public outlining the
committees case for favoring artificial
turf.
If the letter does, indeed, outline the
case for artificial turf, it is grossly inade-
quate. Relying on a single study, performed
by a highly partisan group, however well
intentioned, is an inadequate basis to
make a decision that will cost not only
$600,000 up front, but well over $130,000 a
year (annualized capital cost to replace the
fields in eight years).
The most egregious omission from the
letter is any evidence that the committee
made a comparison of artificial and natu-
ral grass. This is a relatively simple capital
allocation decision, which cannot be made

in our opinion
T
he state Department of Educa-
tion recently released its annu-
al report cards, reviews of
every school in New Jersey. And if
anything, they reveal just how com-
plex a system it is to run public
schools.
From budgeting to cost-per-pupil
numbers to maintaining test scores to
ensuring theres adequate technology
in schools and classrooms, theres no
doubt its hardly an easy task to main-
tain excellence in schools.
Yet what we found is quite promis-
ing, especially in high schools in towns
we cover.
SAT scores in all three categories:
verbal, mathematics and essay are
very strong. In most cases, the average
scores were at or above the states aver-
age. Some were well above average.
The same can be said for HSPA test,
which all high school students must
take and pass before graduating. The
average scores, for the most part in our
readership, are solidly at or above state
averages, especially in the proficient
and advanced proficiency categories
for both mathematics and language
arts.
This is a true representation of the
diligent work of most students, and its
an indication of the hard work of most
teachers and administrators in New
Jersey.
While youll see in our report card
stories this week that most superin-
tendents of schools and other school
officials are happy with results, we
were also pleased to see some of the
same leaders not content with the sta-
tus quo, and making it clear that as
well as districts have performed,
theres still much more room for im-
provement in all areas.
Often, teachers and school adminis-
trators mostly unfairly are knocked
by the public. There are too many in-
stances to list here. Yet one thing is
abundantly clear from the local results
of the 2010-11 report cards: Theres
much more to celebrate than there is to
be concerned about.

the SAT.
Superintendent Dr. Rich Perry
said that he was pleased with the
results of the NJASK tests
throughout the district. Haddon-
field students, he said, again per-
formed above the state averages
for the standardized tests and in
some cases outperformed other
schools in the same District Fac-
tor Group. Haddonfield again is a
J district in the DFG rankings,
which compares students per-
formance on statewide assess-
ments across demographically
similar school districts.
Perry said that the district
looks closely at the needs that
arise from the results of the NJ
ASK test and use them to shape
curriculum.
Its really a collaborative ef-
fort between the district, commu-
nity, parents and everyone that
supports us in a variety of ways.
Were very proud of the efforts of
all those involved and we appreci-
ate the help of the community,
parents, and teachers, Perry
said.
Included in the report cards
were the results for the 2010 No
Child Left Behind reports. All five
schools in the district made their
adequate yearly progress status
and no schools were classified as
being in need of improvement.
Classroom sizes stayed about
the same, but all are still higher
than the state average. Haddon-
field Middle School had the high-
est classroom size average, with
23 students per classroom. The
state average for middle schools
is 19.1.
The high school averaged the
lowest classroom size, with 19.1
students per room. The average
equaled the state average for high
schools.
Central Elementary School av-
eraged 19.6 students, Elizabeth
Haddon Elementary School aver-
aged 20.2, and J. Fithian Tatem El-
ementary averages 19.7 students.
The state average for elementary
schools is 19.1.
Tatem Elementary again had
the highest enrollment total for
elementary schools in the district
with 473 students, up from 439 in
2009-2010.
Elizabeth Haddon had the sec-
ond highest with 344 students,
down from 361 in 2009-2010.
Central School had the lowest
enrollment of any of the elemen-
tary schools, with 313 students.
The enrollment decreased by two
students from 2009-2010.
Even with the high academic
standards and programs provid-
ed by the district, Haddonfield av-
erages a smaller total cost per
pupil than districts of similar
budget types, according to the re-
port cards.
In 2010-2011, the district aver-
aged about $14,723 for total cost
per pupil, about $3,000 than dis-
tricts with similar budgets. The
district 2010-2011 total cost per
pupil decreased by about $200
from the 2009-2010 total.
The Haddonfield Board of Edu-
cation takes great care to find al-
ternate revenue streams, Perry
said, and has been able to in-
crease the district revenue over
the past few years by putting an
emphasis on bringing in more tu-
ition students to the school dis-
trict.
Next year were going to have
some challenges in regard to the
new teacher evaluation system,
which will be fully initiated the
following school year. Were look-
ing at curriculum core content
standards as well. We have some
transitions in administrative po-
sitions as well, so we have a lot
going next year and we want to
maintain the progress weve
made over time, Perry said. But
were very excited about whats
happening at each level.

Serving South Jersey for over 20 years
Call us to make it fun!
ceived an interesting phone call
on Sunday.
Jeff Hall from the USGA told
us we moved from number five to
the number two alternate on the
list earlier this week. He said it
would be a good idea for us to
come out here, he was hinting it
to us, but he didnt outright say
anything. He simply said it
wouldnt hurt to come out, Gold
said. We came out Monday, we
landed in San Francisco at 1:30
p.m. We were on the putting green
Monday afternoon when I got the
call. He said that were in the
tournament.
Withdrawals of Paul Casey
(shoulder) and Brandt Snedeker
(ribs) opened the tournament up
for Zhang.
The duo didnt have much time
to process the information, as
they were scheduled for a prac-
tice round 7 a.m. last Tuesday
with PGA pros Bubba Watson
and Webb Simpson.
Watson of course won the 2012
Masters Tournament this past
April.
Gold was introduced to Zhang
when Zhangs father approached
him at the driving range at Re-
union Resort golf in Orlando,
Golds training course. Zhang is a
member of the country club and
his father was looking for a young
professional/trainer to help mold
his sons game.
I was on the range at Reunion
Resort, hes a member there and
Andys dad came up to me and
asked me if I could help him out.
It started out as being two to three
days a week, but then expanded to
five and six, Gold said. I love
being on the course, I love being
around kids, I want to play pro
golf, but this cant hurt at all. You
need money and I have a tight
budget. Its great experience.
Gold attends lessons with
Zhang, tutors him on the driving
range, and takes notes during
Zhangs tournament to help im-
prove his performance.
He plays well over his age and
never gets nervous, Gold said,
which is a wonder for a 14-year-
old.
Hes a fantastic ball striker, its
his best strength, and Gold said
that if he plays his best he could
most certainly make the cut in
the U.S. Open.
He made the same comment to
Tony Kornheiser and Mike
Wilbon last Tuesday afternoon,
co-hosts of ESPNs sports show
Pardon the Interruption, and
Gold said they immediately blew
his statement out of proportion.
PTI burned me up, Tony was
killing me. I said that hes not
going anywhere; hes going to be
here for a while, and they took it
to mean that I said he was going
to maybe win the tournament,
Gold said, laughing. I will say
that were not here to miss the
cut. He qualified; hes good
enough to play, obviously.
Local man will caddie for
14-year-old golf prodigy

Angelina E. Ablonczy
June 11, 2012
Angie, age 92, on June 11, of
Haddonfield, formerly of Colonia,
N.J. Beloved wife of Paul L., Jr.;
Loving mother of Janice Cokos
(John), Jerelyn Ablonczy (Eric
Brosz) both of Haddonfield and
Joanne Popeson (Dennis) of Lin-
wood, NJ; Devoted grandmother
of Paige Rienzo, Brie Cokos,
Maria and Paul Ablonczy and
Spenser Popeson; Great-grand-
mother of Xavier, Luke and Nico;
sister of Eleanor Cobo, Jennie
Maraziti and Virginia Hulmes.
Born the second of six children
on May 1, 1920, in Morristown,
N.J., Angie enjoyed 92 years of
loyal service to family and coun-
try. Despite her numerous acco-
lades for volunteerism, her active
political life as a Democratic
Committee woman for 40 years,
and her unique talents as a mas-
ter seamstress, Angies greatest
pride and passion was her family.
She was famous for her un-
matched tomato sauce and apple
pie as well as her uncanny ability
to soothe babies. Her ability to
sew anything from curtains to
wedding gowns was legendary
and her home was always filled
with a variety of her hand-made
clothing, draperies and fabric-
crafts. Angie was a very proud
American, famous for her phrase,
love it or leave it! She made air-
craft radios for warplanes during
WWII and continued as Ameri-
can Legion Auxiliary President.
She also gave over 6,000 hours of
volunteer service to Perth Amboy
General Hospital, sewing dolls
and gifts for hospital residents
and taught sewing at Woodbridge
High School to adults. She was
immensely proud of her daugh-
ters, their accomplishments, ca-
reers, and families. Her generous
spirit of service and selflessness
lives on in her survivors memo-
ries and hearts forever.
In lieu of flowers, the family re-
quests donations be made to the

allocation decision, which can-
not be made responsibly without
thoroughly evaluating all op-
tions.
The most responsible means
for determining the true life
cycle cost of renovating the
fields would have been for the
borough to request, from a neu-
tral group, perhaps through the
borough engineer, a comprehen-
sive study for both artificial and
natural turf grass (comparing
costs of field preparation, instal-
lation, maintenance and replace-
ment costs).
There are many resolved is-
sues: increased rates of certain
types of injuries, environmental
impact, and player preference
(the NFL and MLB are going to
natural grass), and whether this
is the best use of limited funds,
just to name a few.
The committee also claims
synthetic fields can be used more
heavily, including in the summer,
while according to the Sports
Turf Managers Association
(STMA) Guide, 2008 edition:
High field temperatures may be
experienced by athletes on
sunny days. Surface temps as
much as 95 to 140 Fahrenheit de-
grees higher on synthetic than
natural grass. High humidity
coupled with high heat can cause
a high heat index indicating lim-
ited time exposures for athletes
and can contribute to serious
heat-related health problems.
Conversely, natural grass has
been shown to be a temperature
reducer, with temperatures
rarely rising above 85 Fahren-
heit degrees, regardless of air
temperature.
Further, a little research chal-
lenges the validity of the com-
mittees cost estimate (obtained
when they consulted extensive-
ly with an experienced and rep-
utable contractor).
One cost estimate from one
contractor was taken at face
value by our elected officials?
The estimated replacement cost
presented is $1 per square foot.
The STMA Guide estimates
the cost at $6.50 to $7.80 per
square feet. This discrepancy
alone screams for further review
before committing funds.
Commissioner Kasko ac-
knowledges in his recent article
that the process to approve the
field renovation was rushed,
and that the turf field resolution
was not published or adequate-
ly publicized by the borough
ahead of time.
This blatant disregard for the
public over such a costly propos-
al is irresponsible and calls into
question the integrity and sense
of accountability of the commis-
sioners and board.
Hopefully, it will be remem-
bered by the voters in future elec-
tions.

Over the past 14 years, the Had-
donfield Alumni Society has hon-
ored 73 former students and 28
teachers from the Haddonfield
school system by bestowing a
Lifetime Achievement Award
upon each of them.
The criteria for an individual
to be considered for the award re-
quires that he/she:
Other than a teacher candi-
date, must have attended one of
Haddonfields public schools, but
not necessarily have graduated
from HMHS.
Has been out of Haddonfield
schools (as a student) for at least
20 years.
Has distinguished him/her-
self during the course of their
adult lives.
If a teacher, must have taught
within the Haddonfield public
school system for at least seven
years.
There is an abundance of wor-
thy alumni and teachers. If you
know of someone that you deem
to be worthy of this award, speak-
up. Make a commitment to give
back to the people who deserve
it, to your school, and to your
community!
The deadline for submitting
the names of nominees to be con-
sidered to receive a Lifetime
Achievement Award is June 30.
Send your submissions, and
list your reasons for recommend-
ing those individuals, to:
Haddonfield Alumni Society,
c/o HMHS (Lifetime Achieve-
ment Awards), 401 Kings High-
way, Haddonfield, 08033.
We have created a recommen-
dation form, which we prefer to
use for this process. The form is

The advent of the Food Net-
work and such shows as TLCs
Cake Boss and Fabulous
Cakes has revolutionized
desserts. Words like fondant and
pulled sugar have become a part
of ones everyday vocabulary and
cakes have become works of art
especially when it comes to spe-
cial occasions.
According to Classic Cake ex-
ecutive pastry chef Robert Ben-
nett, This is a really exciting
time for pastries and desserts.
Clients are looking to experiment
with new flavors, compositions
and accents. They are ready to let
their imagination and taste buds
stretch beyond the traditional.
Chef Bennetts Top Five
When asked the top five ingre-
dients for the ideal wedding cake,
Bennett is quick to reply. After 30
years of creating extraordinary
desserts for special occasions, he
is well prepared to answer.
Start planning early To pro-
vide time for the creative process
and avoid any conflicts, couples
should begin as soon as the wed-
ding date is set.
Request a tasting Pastry chefs
are proud of their creations and
will prepare tempting tastings,
which can include gluten, dairy
and sugar free options upon re-
quest.
Consider the time of year
Wedding cake consultants will
help select flavors for any season
like peaches in the summer or a
pumpkin sponge with chestnut
cream for fall.
Discuss the cake size It is im-
portant to consider if the cake
will be served as the actual
dessert or is a symbolic supple-
ment that guests may taste or
take home.
Have a budget in mind When
choosing your cake design, a bak-
ery should be able to provide a
minimum cost. Often edible
pieces of art, intricacies and de-
tails impact time and expense.
Yet, it comes down to being
true to ones self. Says Bennett,
The most important point I tell
any couple is this is their day and
the cake should please them not
the guests nor the in-laws.

Have you seen those neon laces
walking around town lately?
Well, theyre not just a new fash-
ion trend, theyre also a fundrais-
er for a great cause. As most of
you already know, Jason
Garstkiewics, a seventh-grade
student at Haddonfield Middle
School, was diagnosed with bone
cancer in December. After he was
diagnosed, his friends reached
out to the Go4theGoal foundation
and ordered a few neon yellow
laces for the kids around town to
wear and show their support.
Little did they know that they
would have to order an additional
3,000 laces due to such an over-
whelming demand. Now, you see
almost every pair of sneakers
with a pair of bright yellow laces.
Recently, the seventh-grade stu-
dents at HMS made a wonderful
project in art class in Jasons
honor. These art projects were
tiny clay shoes, with a pair of
Jasons laces weaved through. Ms.
Gehringer, the art teacher at HMS
said that this project was a way to
show support for Jason, and to
let him know how much everyone
cared about him.
Gehringer says that she
thought of this when she heard
about what Jason was going
through, and she wanted him to
know that we all care.
Maisy Dewey, a seventh-grader
at Haddonfield Middle School,
said the art projects were, a
great idea, and it was a great sur-
prise for Jason when he got back
to school.
If you would like to purchase a
pair of shoelaces, you can buy
them at Haddonfield Running Co.
or Hersport downtown.
