03/04/2012 Mohamed 03 BS/12/03/05 03 Finding out the concentration of iron in an Unknown iron sample is by Titration with a Standard Solution of KMnO4 Ansar Mohamed

Theory The Two half Reactions are;

5e + 8H+ + MnO4 Fe+

Mn+ + 4H2O Fe+ + e

The Balanced Equation;

8H+ + MnO4 + 5

Fe+

Mn+ + 5 Fe+ + 4

H2O

The Ratio between

1:5

MnO4 and

Fe+

is

Because

of that the amount of Fe+ moles is five fold than the MnO4 moles.

Solutions 0.02 M KMnO4 25 Cm Fe+

Distilled water

Phosphoric Acid (H3PO4)

Procedure

Prepare 50 Cm of 0.02M KMnO4 Pipette a 25 Cm Sample of an Unknown Fe+ solution into a 250 Cm Erlenmeyer flask. Add 50 Cm of Distilled water and add few amount of H3PO4 into the flask.

Fill a burette with the Standard solution and record the initial burette Reading. Titrate the sample with the Standard KMnO4 to a faint pink end point and record the final burette reading. Calculate the Volume of KMnO4 Used.

Discard the ferrous Solution down the drain and repeat the titration with a new sample of the ferrous solution for a total of 2 trials. Do blank Analysis.

Blank Analysis Procedure

Weigh the KMnO4 mass by using the electric scale. (keep the KMnO4 solid on the watch glass and weigh) Transfer that amount of KMnO4 into a volumetric flask.
6

Add water while shaking the volumetric flask.

Transfer the KMnO4 solution into the burette by using a funnel. (add 25 Cm )

Add 250 Cm of water to a volumetric flask.

Do titration between KMnO4 and water. Read the starting volume of KMnO4 in burette. Then add slowly KMnO4 to the flask and shake it. While shaking see the real color of KMnO4 take place. When the real color came stop adding KMnO4 and read the final volume. Get the volume used for this titration. Remove the water in the flask and do it again. (2 or 3 Trials)

The ratio between KMnO4 and Fe+;

Fe+ moles titrated = 0.000116 5 = 0.00058 mol

[Fe+] = 0.00058 mol 25 Cm

The two half reactions

5e + 8H+ + MnO4 Mn+ + 4H2O Eo = +1.51 V 5 Fe+ 5 Fe+ + 5e Eo = +0.77 5 = +3.85 V

Add the two equations together; 8H+ + MnO4 + 5 Fe+ H2O Eocell = + 1.51 + 3.85 = + 3.85 V Mn+ + 5 Fe+ + 4

Eocell > 0 (Eocell positive) so the reaction is spontaneous.

Conclusion
The purpose of this practical was to obtain the concentration of an unknown iron sample.it can easily find out by using KMnO4. in here no need to use any indiacator. Because color change can be seen after the titration has finished. The very pale green solution turns pale pink which indicates clearly, the end point of the titration. To be familiar with the colour we use to do a blank titration. From the equation we come to know about the stoichiometry between KMnO4 and Fe+ is 1:5. That means the mole ration them also 1:5. by using the mole of KMnO4 easily we can find out the concentration of Iron sample.
