DRUGS Date Ordered: Generic Name: Hydrocortisone Classification: Corticosteroids, Glucocorticoids, Adrenal Cortical Steroid Dosage: Route: TIV

INDICATIONS Severe inflammation Hematologic Disorder

ACTIONS Enters target cells and binds to cytoplasmic receptors; initiates many complex reactions that is responsible for anti-inflammatory actions.

SIDE EFFECTS / ADVERSE EFFECTS


Side effects: flushing sweating edema diarrhea tachycardia vertigo

NURSING CONSIDERATIONS
Note degree of involuntary movements, muscle spasm/rigidity and drooling Provide patient safety when vertigo is present

PATIENT TEACHING
Ask the patient to rise slowly from a supine or sitting position to avoid orthostatic hypotension Encourage adequate fluid intake and foods to provide sufficient bulk and exercise as tolerated Ask patient to avoid performing activities that require mental alertness

Monitor for consistency, color, and amount of stool. If patients develop urinary hesitancy, assess for bladder distention
