Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit learners should: 1. Know different types of organisations in the music industry
PRODUCTION COMPANIES: recording companies (major and independent), broadcasting (TV and Radio), concert promoters, distribution companies SERVICE COMPANIES: facilities hire companies (studio, rehearsal), light, sound and scenic hire, transport AGENCIES: Artists representation, booking, personal management, financial management MEDIA: Music journals, TV, Radio PROFESSIONAL ORGANISATIONS: Performing Rights Society (PRS), Mechanical copyright Protection Society (MCPS), Musicians Union, Equity.
Assignment Scenario: A recent informal survey of KS3 students showed that most do not intend to continue their music studies into the KS4 level. Mrs Chase and other music teachers have suggested that this maybe due in part to students lack of understanding of the Music Industry and the ever-increasing number of career opportunities which it has to offer. As a BTEC Music student and budding music advocate, you are to develop a page within your portfolio website which will seek to inform its visitors about some of the areas and job roles within the music industry that are of particular interest to you. Assignment Description: The Webpage is to have three sections: A. ORGANISATIONS (P1, M1, D1) This section should focus on an organisation within the music industry. It should describe the organisation and explain to your site visitors exactly who and how the organisation works with other organisations, the performers and other professionals in the Music Industry Unit 1: Working in the Music Industry 2
B. PERFORMERS (P2, M2, D2) This section should focus on a performer within the music industry. It should describe the profession they are and explain to your site visitors exactly who and how they need to work with others to ensure their success C. NON-PERFORMER (P3, M3, D3) This section should focus on a non-performer within the music industry. It should describe the profession they are and explain to your site visitors exactly who and how they need to work with others to ensure their success
These assignments cover the assessment and grading criteria at PMD1, PMD2 and PMD3. Where a student is currently working at pass or merit level, an opportunity to improve this level will be given as part of assessor feedback, along with a date for re-submission.
