CURRICULUM VITAE
Dr. Hisham Mohamad
Senior Lecturer
Department of Geotechnics & Transportation Faculty of Civil Engineering Universiti Teknologi Malaysia 81310-UTM Skudai Johor Bahru, MALAYSIA Tel: +60 19 7547876 Fax: +60 7 5566157 Email: mhisham@utm.my, hisham.mohamad@cantab.net

A brief introduction of myself: (Upon graduation of my bachelor degree in Civil Engineering (with First Class Honours) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), I joined UTM in 2002 as a graduate Tutor in the Department of Geotechnics and Transportation. I was awarded with scholarships by the Malaysian government agencies to continue my studies for a Masters degree (Imperial College) and a Doctoral degree (Cambridge) which I successfully completed in 2004 and 2008 respectively. I am now a Lecturer in UTM, teaching advance geotechnical engineering design and modelling for final year undergraduate and Masters students as well as conducting research and supervising several PhD students. My field of expertise in which I developed during my PhD course at Cambridge is the research and development of a new strain sensing technology in geotechnical structures using fibre optic sensors. The technique of measuring strains in the form of 'continuous' rather than at discrete or local such as the conventional strain gauges is called Brillouin Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (BOTDR). The technology allows strains to be measured at every point along a standard telecomuncation optical cable for up to 10 km long with an accuracy of 10-30 microstrains. Hence, it has the potential of becoming a low cost instrumentation and suitable for long term monitoring applications.)
