Courseslike`DiscreteStructures,`DataStructuresandAlgorithms,Theoryof ComputationandAlgorithmsandComplexityhavebeenmyfirmfavorites.Ifind theproblemsinTheoreticalComputerScienceparticularlyappealingbecauseof theflavorofabstractmathematicsthatIlovesomuch.Atthesametime,the problemsinthisfieldhaveaconcretebasis,originatingfrompracticalproblemsin ComputerScience.Thisaddstotheirappeal. Recently,alotofexcitingdevelopmentshavetakenplaceinthefieldof approximationalgorithms.TheMarkovchainapproachandtheprimal/dual approachhaveemergedaspowerfultechniquesforthedevelopmentof approximationalgorithms.Morerecently,semidefiniteprogramminghasbeen usedtoobtainapproximationalgorithmsforOptimizationproblems.Aninteresting connectionwithresultsinInteractiveProofSystemshasyieldedlowerboundson theapproximabilityofvariousproblems.Ibelievethatthesemethodshavealotof potential.MembersofthefacultyatStanfordhavedonealotofthepioneering workintheseareas.Prof.YYYhasbeeninvolvedintheworkonInteractiveProof Systemsandsemidefiniteprogramming.Ihavereadabouttheseresultsinthe courseofmyseminar(JuniorThesis),mysummertrainingattheTataInstituteof FundamentalResearch(TIFR),Bombay,andmyB.Tech.Project(SeniorThesis).I findthemveryfascinatingandintendtoworkwithproblemsofasimilarflavor. TherearetworeasonswhyIbelievethatgraduatestudyinareputeddepartment, suchasyours,isimportantforapersonaspiringforaresearchcareer.Firstly, workingforathesisundertheguidanceofanexpertwhoseworkcanserveasa modelisthemosteffectivemethodoftransformingastudentintoalargely independentresearchermakingsignificantoriginalcontributions.Secondly,the emphasisofgraduatestudyonintensiveandindependentstudyofaspecialized areaisanidealwayofmakingastudentcapableofreachingthefrontiersof knowledgeinasubfieldquicklyandkeepingabreastofthelatestdevelopments.
