WHAT IS DESIGN ?...!!

Design is a part of our everyday life. It is there for us to see and experience all the time

It affects everybodys lives.

Nature has been lavish in good design

Open your eyes to the extraordinary world around you

WHAT IS DESIGN ?...!!

A creative activity it involves bringing into being something new and useful that has not existed previously - Reswick The imaginative jump from present facts to future possibilities Page

Realisation of our intentions in a desirable manner that can give us a better future

WHAT IS CREATIVITY ?.. Act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality

If you have ideas, but don't act on them, you are imaginative but not creative.

We are naturally creative. but,.. as we grow up we learn to be uncreative.

COMPONENTS OF DESIGN

DESIGN COMPONENTS

Commodity Firmness Delight

Function Stability, Strength Aesthetics

Objective - Subjective

Objectivity Subjectivity

Controlled by left brain Controlled by right brain

Design requires whole brain thinking; Right brain - Imagination, artistry and intuition. Left brain - logic and planning.

DESIGN THEREFORE, IS
A Rational, Logical, Sequential Process Is a Solution to a particular problem within a set of Constraints. A Creative Process that occurs in many settings

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROCESS

1.

"program", or set of needs that a building needs to fulfill.

Understand the Context Goals, site Understand the User's Needs Requirements

Programming - is the activity of determining the

Who will use the space Use(s) of the space; what activities will take place there How private or public should the space be Which other spaces should be adjacent to that space What type of mood should the space create How large should the space be

Understand the User's Constraints

MAXIMUM BUDGET
ZONING AND BUILDING CODE RESTRICTIONS AVAILABILITY OF MATERIALS, SITE CONSTRAINTS

2.

Define Working Criteria / Goals

Sort out what problem you are trying to address Write a brief about the problems to be solved Spell out what the design must achieve

3.

Research and Gather Data : To gain some new

information and knowledge, through
Literature - Books, Standards, Internet Case study Site study. Any other special study if required

4. 5.

Brainstorm : Generate Creative Ideas through discussions Analyze : Combine your ideas with information obtained from
research to suggest several possible design solutions

5.

Schematic stage: The focus is on the "scheme", or

overall high-level design
Select an approach. (Concept) Create a Coherent Solution that encompasses the project as a whole. Concentrate on Macro Level ( Site) strategies.
Site analysis Zoning of various activities Interconnection of various zones Visual imagery

Ignore Minor details.

WHAT IS A CONCEPT ?
An idea timeless, abstract and broad. A generalised idea John Locke
Why is a concept important?

Concept induces thinking. Without concept only factual learning occurs.

How are concepts acquired?

From instances / incidences/ occurrences Abstraction of nature, various features. Hypothesis

Abstraction

Concepts inspired by nature

TURNING TORSO
- Calatrava

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE

- Jorn Utzon

6. Design

Development Stage:
- The scheme is developed further
Focus on individual attention Detail out each zones in the project. Concentrate on Micro Level ( Building level)
- Orientation of the building - Circulation (Function) - Inter- relationship between each space - Lighting, Ventilation - Build a model ( 3D views ) - Application of materials

. Refinement

Stage: - The scheme is refined into final design

- Make A Decision - Check if the design satisfies all the parameters
- Prepare working drawings

TIPS TO BE A GOOD DESIGNER

Observe Read as much as you can Brainstorm Exercise your brain Appreciate Express yourself Listen to good music Spend sometime alone Be simple, humane Enjoy life

Design is a process of creating things for clients, who may not know what they want, until they see what you've done, then they know exactly what they want, but it's not what you did. - Anonymous
