Course Description MGNT 4595 is intended to be a challenging and exciting undergraduate capstone course for the management degree. First and foremost, it is a course about "strategy" and about" managing for success." The course is centered on the theme that a company achieves sustained success if and only if its executives and managers (1) have an appropriate strategy game plan for running the company, and (2) implement and execute that strategy excellently. We shall stress how and why a well-conceived well-executed strategy enhances a companys long-term performance. Course Objectives 1. To develop your capacity to think strategically about a company, its business position, how it can gain sustainable competitive advantage, and how its strategy can be implemented and executed successfully. 2. To build your skills in conducting strategic analysis in a variety of industries and competitive situations and, especially, to provide you with a stronger understanding of the competitive challenge of a global market environment. 3. To acquaint you with the managerial tasks associated with implementing and executing company strategies, drill you in the range of actions managers can take to promote competent strategy executing, and give you some confidence in being able to function effectively as part of a companys strategy-implementing team. 4. To integrate the knowledge gained in earlier management courses, show you how the various pieces of the business puzzle fit together, and demonstrate why the different parts of the business need to be managed in strategic harmony for a company to operate in a winning fashion. 5. To make you more conscious about the importance of ethical principles, personal and company values, and socially responsible management practices. 6. To enhance your ability to effectively communicate the results of your analyses and appropriate recommendations that address your findings.

If you are not present you will be unable to participate in graded activities of case analysis and current events. Each student is expected to be an active participant and to make meaningful comments on readings and cases being discussed. Your grade on class participation is something to be earned via consistent, daily contribution to class discussion. You should, therefore, make a concerted effort to attend class discussions of cases and to be sufficiently prepared to contribute to the case discussions. Merely coming to class is not sufficient; attendance is not participation.

Please come to class prepared to participate, every day. It will be highly unusual for you not to be called on. Your informed response will result in credit toward your participation grade. Peer review will be part of your evaluation. Once peer review scores are submitted, there will be no changes. Policies Regarding Make-Up Exams If you are unable to take an exam when scheduled, you may take a make-up at yours and the professors convenience. However, your score on that make-up exam will be discounted 10% per week for each week beyond the scheduled exam time. The only exceptions will be absences for officially sanctioned SPSU events where you are an official participant. Students with Disabilities Students with disabilities who believe they may need accommodations in this class are encouraged to contact the counselor working with disabilities at 770-528-7226 as soon as possible to better ensure that such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion.
