EXP # 8 MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) Characteristics & NMOS Amplifier circuits
OBJECTIVES: To test the MOSFET types N or P and identify its terminals. To study experimentally the static characteristics of the Mosfet & estimate its parameters. To understand the Transistor modes of operations. To Test the basic configuration of single stage Amplifier circuits of NMOS common source and common drain. To understand how to analysis practically the DC (VD, VG, VS) and AC (Am , Ri, Ro) parameters for Amplifier circuit REQUIRED EQUIPMENT: Breadboard. Function Generator CRO. DMM. (10k , 35k ,10meg and 100 meg) resistances. 0.1F and 470F capacitances. MOSFET CD 4007. : (PART (A): The MOSFET Parameters( Vt &K PROCEDURE:

Using computer software (Excell), we will obtain a curve between .( ID Vs VGS ) of N-type MOSFET (NMOS) Enhancement Curve :Using the following data table find .(Find Vt parameter value graphically (intersection of X-axis -1 .Plot (ID & VGS) to find K parameter value (slope) graphically -2

Note: For the MOSFET is in saturation region {ID =K (VGS Vt)^2} (not * linear equation). To converted to linear equation we have to take the square root both side >>{ID =K (VGS V t )} = {ID =K (VGS )K(V t)} .(>>Y =( m X-C Note: K = m = slope = (ID /VGS) >> To find the K from the graph * .(ID &VGS) >> we take (slope)^2=K=..mA/V2 .Note: Vt is the thermal voltage * ID (m A) = Y axis 0.00 0.02 0.08 0.18 0.32 0.50 0.72 0.98 1.28 1.62 2.00 2.42 2.88 3.38 3.92 4.50 VGS (v) = X axis 2.00 2.20 2.40 2.60 2.80 3.00 3.20 3.40 3.60 3.80 4.00 4.20 4.40 4.60 4.80 5.00

PART (B): Transfer Characteristics Of The NMOS Circuit::

Fig. 2 PROCEDURE:

Setup the circuit as shown in Fig. 1.Note Pin 14 to 10V.

DC measurements of the Common Source circuit: Switch OFF the F.G. and measure the DC-Voltages VG , VS and VD. 2. State the mode of operation for the MOSFET.
1.

AC measurements of the Common Source circuit: 1. Switch ON the F.G and apply sine wave signal. 2. Use the CRO to display both the input (CH#1) and output (CH#2) waveforms.

Measuring voltage gain Am experimentally: 1. Set the CRO to XY position.

3. Find the phase shift . 4. Back to time domain and measure the midband gain Am=Vo/Vs. 5. Plot to scale Vi and Vo versus time on the same axes from the CRO and measure the voltage gain. B. Measuring input resistance Rin experimentally:

1. Connect a resistance of 51k ohms in series with Vs. 2. Measure the new voltage gain Am1 =Vo1/Vs. 3. Calculate the value of the input resistance. 4. Remove Rd from the circuit.

C - Measuring output resistance Ro experimentally

1. Connect a decade box in series with a 99f capacitor from the output terminal to the ground terminal with the resistance set to 10k (Vo should not exhibit any distortion). 2. Measure the new voltage gain A2 =Vo2/Vs. 3. Calculate the value of the output resistance. 4. Remove the decade box from the circuit.

D- Calculation of the current gain (Ai) Ai=Io/Ii=(Vo/Ro)/(Vi/Ri)=(Vo/Vi)*(Ri/Ro)=Am*(Ri/Ro)

PART (C): AC and DC measurements of the Common Drain (source follower) Amplifier circuit:

Fig.3 PROCEDURE: AC measurements of the Common Drain circuit: Set up the circuit in Fig.2.Note pin 14 connected to 5V. 2. Use the CRO to display both the input (CH#1) and output(CH#2) waveforms.
1.

1. Connect a resistance of Rd = 2 M ohms in series with Vs. 2. Measure the new voltage gain Am1 =Vo1/Vs. 3. Calculate the value of the input resistance. 4. Remove Rd from the circuit.

C - Measuring output resistance Ro experimentally

1. Connect a decade box in series with a 99f capacitor from the output terminal to the ground terminal with the resistance set to Rd = 1k (Vo should not exhibit any distortion).
