Game Rules (Must be typed!)

Trait Sentences and paragraphs Exceptional Uses sentences of varying lengths and structures. Paragraphs indicate a shift in thought and are used to make sequence of events clear. Words are used correctly and precisely. Attention is given to audience and purpose. Academic content words are present. Spelling is correct, including complex and irregular words. Capital letters and ending punctuation are present throughout. A range of punctuation including commas, apostrophes, colons and semicolons is used accurately and effectively. Objective and procedures of the game are easily identified. Players can read the rules and completely understand how to play the game. Rules are written using stepby-step procedures. Rules are organized using headings and sub-headings. Acceptable Simple and some complex sentences are used. Some paragraphing to show sequence of events/ideas. Acceptable vocabulary, including some academic content words. Attention is given to audience and purpose. Spelling is generally correct. Periods and capitals are used correctly and punctuation is beginning to be used within the sentence. Amateur Sentence structure is usually correct. Simple sentences are used. Little attempt made to paragraph writing. Simple vocabulary. Unsatisfactory Sentences do not make sense. No paragraphing.

Word choice

Incorrect vocabulary.

Spelling Punctuation

Frequent spelling errors. Frequent punctuation errors.

Spelling errors interfere with understanding. Insufficient or lacks punctuation. Incorrect use of capital letters.

Purpose

Objective and procedures are not immediately clear. Some additional content is needed to understand how to play the game. Rules are written using stepby-step procedures, but lacks organizational headings and sub-headings that help with understanding procedures.

Objective and procedures are difficult to determine. Additional content is needed to understand the rules and objective. Major points are evident. Procedures and rules are difficult to follow and lack organization and structure.

Objective and procedures cannot be determined by reading the rules.

Organization

Rules lack focus and organization, making the player unable to understand the objective and rules of the game.

Math Concepts
Trait Math Questions Exceptional Game has a minimum of 25 math questions. Of the questions, only 25 % are computation. The other 75% are higher-order thinking questions. Questions have varying degrees of difficulty to challenge all players. Shows complete understanding of the problems mathematical concepts and principles Uses appropriate mathematical terminology and notations including labeling answer if appropriate Executes formulas and computations completely and correctly Shows complete evidence of at least one appropriate strategy that would correctly solve the problem Gives a complete explanation of the solution process; clearly explains what was done and why it was done May include a diagram or visual with a complete explanation of all its elements Acceptable Game has at least 20 math questions. Of the questions, at least 50% are higher-order thinking questions. Questions have varying degrees of difficulty. Shows nearly complete understanding of the problems mathematical concepts and principles Uses mostly correct mathematical terminology and notations Formulas and computations are generally correct but may contain minor errors Shows nearly complete evidence of an appropriate strategy that would correctly solve the problem Gives a nearly complete explanation of the solution process; clearly explains what was done and begins to address why it was done May include a diagram or visual with most of its elements explained Amateur Game has at least 10 math questions. Most questions are computation, requiring little higher-order math thinking and reasoning. Unsatisfactory Game has fewer than 10 math questions. Math questions require little to no high-order math thinking and reasoning. Questions are too easily answered. Shows limited to no understanding of the problems mathematical concepts and principles May misuse or fail to use mathematical terminology and notations Attempts an answer

Mathematical Understanding

Shows some understanding of the problems mathematical concepts and principles Uses some correct mathematical terminology and notations May contain major formula or computational errors

Math Strategies and Procedures Mathematical Explanations

Shows some evidence of an appropriate strategy that would correctly solve the problem Gives some explanation of the solution process but explanation is difficult to interpret, or does not completely match the solution process May include a diagram or visual with some of its elements explained

Uses an inappropriate strategy for solving the problem or strategy is difficult to identify Explanation does not match presented solution process.

Game Design
Trait Design Exceptional Game board and pieces are planned carefully. Group made several sketches prior to final project (prework). Group chose color scheme, designs, and graphics carefully. Group used space effectively. Project is unique, does not look like the others. Shows creativity that works; it is new and interesting. Contrasting colors and at least 3 original graphics were used to give the game pieces and game board visual appeal. The game is very easy to set up and play in the context it was designed for. Acceptable Game board and pieces are planned carefully Some pre-work is evident. Group chose colors, graphics, and designs carefully. Space is used mostly effectively. Project is nice and works, and was unique at times. Some items are similar to others projects. Contrasting colors and at least 1 original graphic were used to give the game pieces and game board visual appeal. The game is fairly easy to set up and play, but a few glitches are apparent. Amateur Some planning went into the game board and pieces. Little evidence of pre-work. Attempts to use space effectively. Unsatisfactory Little to no evidence of planning and pre-work. Space not used efficiently.

Creativity

Has a few unique qualities, but is quite similar to others projects.

Is not unique. Boring and predictable. Little or no color or fewer than 3 graphics were included. The game would take considerable effort to set up and play...more effort than it's worth.

Appearance

Contrasting colors and "borrowed" graphics were used to give the game pieces and game board visual appeal. The game would take a fair bit of effort to set up and play in the chosen context

Identifies and makes a complete list of tasks that need to be done. Divides work fairly to appropriate team members. Makes and keeps assignment deadlines. Completes individual tasks on time and works to help group meet deadlines. Acceptable Listens to, supports, and shares ideas with the group. Does not disrupt the efforts of the group. Shares ideas in every group discussion and activities. Attempts to locate additional resources and information. Amateur Does not consistently listen to, support, and share ideas with the group. Makes some efforts to be a team player. Participates in most group discussions and activities. Shares a few ideas.
