Creating zones with Garmin MapSource

In this tutorial, the simple process of creating a zone for the URANOS RadarSim will be explained step-by-step. Dont forget to save often! Required for this tutorial Garmin MapSource (or Garmin BaseCamp) with Topomap BeNeLux installed EditPad Lite MS Excel BeLux BDRY.gdb

Setting up MapSource 1. After installing MapSource and unlocking Topomap BeNeLux, open the Properties window, which can be found in the Edit-tab 2. Under the Units-tab, select Nautical (nm, kt, ft) as desired distance and speed indicators 3. Under the Position-tab, make sure Longitude/Latitude hddd.ddddd is selected as grid 4. On the main screen, right-click the toolbar and make sure edit track is active Creating regular waypoints 1. 2. 3. 4. Open a new file on MapSource Right-click anywhere on the map Select New Waypoint Enter a name for the waypoint, the desired coordinates and pick a symbol. You might find it easy to number your waypoints(e.g. EBBE TMA 4 01) and to use one type of symbols for regular points and another type for circles Click OK to close the window, the newly created waypoint is now visible in the list on the right-hand side of the screen Copy the waypoint by selecting it in the list and pressing Ctrl+C Double-click the waypoint and change the name and coordinates to those of your second point, click OK to close the window Paste the first waypoint in the list by pressing Ctrl+V Keep doing this until all waypoints have been created

Creating circles 1. Follow the steps as described in Creating regular waypoints 2. When entering the waypoints properties, also enter the desired proximity. This will create a circle around the waypoint 3. If necessary, adjust the radius of the circle so it crosses the start and end points when zoomed in to 80ft Creating a track 1. Center your view on the first waypoint and zoom in to 80ft 2. Using the Draw Track button, click in the center of the waypoint to create the first trackpoint 3. Move to the next waypoint and do the same The easiest way of doing this is by zooming out and centering your view on the next waypoint before zooming back in to 80ft 4. When the description of a waypoint states an arc of circle, put the zoom in such a way that you can see the dents in the circle (about 500ft) Click on each dent to create a smooth arc of circle 5. When the description of a waypoint states along the belgian- border, open BeLux BDRY.gdb and copy-paste the required track(s) in your file Use the Divide track and Combine tracks buttons to cut the required part of boundary track from the BeLux BDRY track and add it to your track 6. Keep doing this until the complete zone has been tracked 7. Double-click on the track in the list to change its name and color (pick a bright color to make the track more visible) Converting Garmins .gdb-file to a useable .txt-file 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. Open the .gdb-file Save it as a .txt-file Open the .txt-file with EditPad Lite Delete everything before the first Trackpoint Select the first Trackpoint N, press Ctrl+F and use the replace all function to replace it with nothing (an easier way of deleting it) Do the same for E, ft, nm and tru Replace all spaces with tabs and all . with , Copy everything and paste it in MS Excel Delete everything but the first two columns Use Cell properties to give all coordinates 12 decimals Copy the two columns and paste them back in EditPad Replace all tabs with spaces and all , with . Save the file as a .txt-file You have now created a file which is useable with the URANOS RadarSim
