2012

The UCD Applied Language Centre (ALC) provides a variety of courses in English for non-native speakers. In 1997, University College Dublin opened the Daedalus Building at the heart of the Belfield Campus. This facility is one of the first in Ireland to be built specifically for language learning. It was designed to provide the best possible learning environment for students, and for optimum integration of the latest technology in language education. University College Dublin is a dynamic, modern university where cutting edge research and scholarship provide a stimulating intellectual environment - the ideal surroundings for learning and discovery. Dublin is one of Europe"s oldest cities. In terms of atmosphere, nightlife, visitor attractions, activities and shopping, Dublin has very few rivals among its European counterparts.

Classes are offered at all levels of ability, from beginner to advanced, and there are no more than 14 students in a class (the average is 10 to 12). Students who are beginners are advised to take a 3-week General English course (20 hours per week). Classes generally take place in the Newman or Daedalus Buildings. A Social and Cultural programme is included in the course fees. This consists of afternoon visits to places of cultural and historical interest, evening social events, and day trips at weekends; there is an extra charge for trips scheduled at weekends. Occasionally, due to circumstances beyond our control, access to certain college facilities may be restricted. All required course materials are provided for the duration of the programme. Course participants must be 18 years of age or over. Students who are aged 17 may occasionally be accepted, provided they have written authorisation from parents or guardians, and at the discretion of the Director.
