From 2800 B.C. to the 21st CenturyEngland, May, 2012

Part 6: Tallest Spire in 21st Century England to a 2800 B.C. Stone CircleAll in a Single Days Travels p y
Dave had a glass of London Pride bitter, which he very much enjoyed. Then it was off to find the cathedral. Again we probably didnt need the map because of the tall spire rising in the sky, along with the signs posted at intersections. About halfway to the cathedral, Dave realized After more walking than our legs appreciated, we were at the cathedral green and glimpsed the magnificent structure situated on it. Completed in 1258, this Gothic cathedral took only 38 years to build, extremely fast construction for the Middle Ages. My guidebook says they have a wonderful tour, ending with climbing the 330 steps to the tower, but we didnt have the 1-1/2 to 2 hours of the tour to devote here, as our goal was to sleep in Bath that night, and we had three other stops along the way. But its easy to do a shorter self-guided tour, with help from a good guidebook and the volunteers inside. Visitors wont want book Sarum by Edward Rutherfurd and knew we wanted to make a brief stop here. The Bronze-age human settlement (from about 500 B.C.) on this hill was later followed by the Romans, Saxons and Normans through A.D. 1220. Then it was moved to the present-day Salisbury. Seeing the foundation ruins here and viewing the Salisbury Cathedral spire in the valley below gave us quite a sense of history after reading Sarum. We both highly recommend reading that book, whether or not you plan to visit England. It really does make ancient history come alive. Next stop was Stonehenge, about 15 minutes north of Salisbury, and the roads

Leaving the Heathrow Airport area, we took the motorway M3 using a 1990 atlas that Ami and Ken had loaned us. It held fond memories for them because thats the atlas they used when taking Amis father on a road trip through England. It was a huge help to us because it had magnified maps of every part of England. We were heading to Salisbury, known for its cathedral and interesting history, which goes back to the Bronze Age, perhaps as early as 500 B.C. It later became a Roman town called Sarum. The current city of Salisbury was started when the old settlement outgrew the space on a nearby hill, and the people moved to this site on the river valley below the hill. We knew we wouldnt have a great deal of time to spend in Salisbury (population 45,000), but we wanted to visit the cathedral featuring Englands tallest spire (404 feet) and largest cathedral green (80 acres). First task upon arriving was to find a parking place, and took quite awhile. We ended up finding a space on a side street on a hill, across the street from the youth hostel, and a few blocks away from the town center. I had my photocopy from the guidebook of the towns layout, and we started walking downhill toward Market Square, since this was Saturday, and a market day, we could have found it without my map by just following our ears. It was a very festive, lively and noisy scene. Since we were hungry, we decided to eat first and found a pub listed in my guidebook, but they were not serving lunch that day, and they directed us to The Ox Row Inn. We enjoyed a lunch of vegetable soup and bread with a side order of chips (the tastiest chips we ate in England), and

to miss what is said to be the oldest working clock in existence (dates from 14th century), and in the Chapter House one can see one of the four original copies of the 1215 Magna Carta, which limited the monarchs powers, and is comparable in English importance as the Constitution is to Amerihed left his camera at the pub; so, I anxiously waited on a side street for his return, hopefully with his camera. After a short wait, he was back, with his camera, which was still lying in the booth in which wed dined. cans. Leaving the cathedral we walked back to our car, the last few blocks were uphill. I still remember feeling quite relieved to be seated and no longer walking uphill. We were on the road again. With the help of our friends atlas, we quickly arrived at Old Sarum, only two miles north of Salisbury. Wed read the

are well-signed. The parking lot held many cars and several buses, and more tourists than we were used to seeing. Having seen so much on TV regarding this site and being short on time, we did not purchase the audioguide here, which my guidebooks say is excellent. Stonehenge (built in phases between 3000 and 1500 B.C. and as old at the pyramids) is unique among Englands hundreds of stone circles because it is the only one that has horizontal lintels spanning the vertical stones, and the only one where the stones have been made smooth and uniform. Visitors here see what is a little more than half the original circle. It still functions as a very accurate celestial calendar, which helped the ancients know when to plant and harvest, and it is built at the precise point where six ley lines

intersect. These are theoretical lines of magnetic power that crisscross the globe. You can ask one of the guides here to demonstrate the ley lines with a pair of divining rods and decide for yourself. Another unusual feature here is that two different types of stone were used. The tall ones (most weigh around 25 tons) and lintels (about 7 tons each) are sarsen , yp stone, a type of sand-

New Later Medical Clinic Hours

Oroville Hospitals Medical Walkin Clinic, also known as the Annex, has changed its hours to 3 PM to 11 PM to better serve the communitys needs. Oroville Hospital saw the need in Oroville to provide walk-in services after normal business hours. Now the community will have medical services available when they need it. Jennifer Meyers, Outpatient Clinic Manager, was an advocate of the change, We want to provide walk-in service for patients who are unable to come in during the day; we strive to provide the best care possible in a way that is most convenient to our patients. To accommodate walk-in patients from 8 AM to 3 PM, patients can still go to Oroville Comprehensive Care Walkin Clinic located at 900 Oro Dam Boulevard or call their primary care provider to see if they can get them in. Another option is to use our medical concierge service, which will help set patients up with a provider almost immediately. Patients can call 532-8035 to take advantage of this service. The Emergency Services Department is also available if medical attention is needed after 11 PM. We are encouraging patients to try their primary care provider first if they need help during normal business hours. Most of the time we can fit patients in the same day or get them into another provider in the same office. We know how important everyones time is and want to make sure we accommodate our communitys needs, said Jennifer. The Annex is located directly across from the Emergency Room on the north end of the hospital. You can call them at 532-8220 if you have any questions.

stone, which is found about 20 miles from the site. The middle, shorter bluestones came from the south coast of Wales (240 miles away). Why did they want stones from 240 miles away? How did they get those to this site, or the 25-tons and 7-ton ones from 20 miles away? Mysteries still abound regarding Stonehenge We left Stonehenge headed for Avebury, about an hour north. You may remember that this was Daves first day of driving on the English side of the road and shifting our manual trans, rather than automatic, car with his left hand, rather than the U.S. right-handed shifting. This went very well, as long as we were on a major motorway. But the drive to Avebury had some startling moments in it! The rural roads in England are VERY narrow, and they have no shoulders. What they do have are short curbs, and since Dave was instinctively driving more to the left of the center line on these very narrow country roads, he bounced us off of the curbs a few times and tree branches hit my window a few times, as well. A little gasp would escape from me, when that happened, which annoyed Dave, but it was a natural, spontaneous reaction on my partit was my side of the car that was bouncing off the curbs and having tree

Trust Parking Lot, which is about a threeminute walk from the tiny village. There is no public parking in the village. Unlike Stonehenge, Avebury is a prehistoric, open-air, stone circle museum, where visitors can walk and actually touch the stones, and Avebury dates to 2800 B.C., six centuries older than Stonehenge, and 16 times the size! We had a hard time getting our heads around 2800 B.C., six centuries older than Stonehengeits tough to grasp We arrived there late afternoon and were soon overwhelmedthis felt like we walking on land where we could almost feel the ancient Neolithic peoples presence. We walked through a portion of it and rubbed the texture of the stones with our fingers. (We did have to watch where we stepped, since there are sheep roaming in this fenced-off area circle of stones.) Dave and I were immediately entranced, and we didnt even get to the Ritual Procession Way to the Sanctuary (thought to be 1,000 yrs. older than most of the sights here and the beginning of Aveburys huge stone circle), Silbury Hill (more than 4,000 yrs. old and the largest man-made object in pre-historic Europe), or West Kennet Long Barrow (the best-preserved Stone Age chamber tomb in England). It was late afternoon, when we arrived there, and we both strongly considered spending the night there, because there is so much to learn/experience here. However, there is very limited lodging, and if we were unsuccessful in finding lodging, that would put us much later in terms of traveling on. So, we left Avebury, heading for Bath and wishing we had scheduled 5 days in a rental car, rather than four.

Tips for Enjoying the Fireworks

Make your Lake Oroville Experience comfortable and safe! Here are a few tips: There will be no bus service this year so plan to come a bit earlier. Parking areas include: The Upper Overlook parking lot which is located above the Dam on the north side of Royal Oaks Drive between Canyon Drive and the roadway to the Hyatt power plant. The Lower Overlook parking lot day use area which is located on the north end of the Dam - beyond the spillway gates, near the spillway launching area. This parking lot will be accessible until the top of the Dam closes at 3pm to oneway traffic only and to all traffic at 5pm.

After 5pm, exit from the Spillway lot will be via the road down the right abutment end. No re-entrance will be allowed. ADA access is at the south end of the Dam via Canyon Drive. ADA placards are required for access to this area and access will be strictly monitored. Contained BBQs are allowed ONLY in the Spillway day use and parking area. No open fires are allowed. No fires of any kind are allowed in other parking lots or surrounding areas. No fireworks of any kind are allowed. Fireworks are legal ONLY within the Oroville City limits. Fireworks are allowed at Riverbend Park, which is located at the foot of Montgomery Streets and is within the city limits. There are permanent restrooms at the South end of the Dam and port-a-potties will be available along the top of the Dam. FOR YOUR COMFORT: Sunscreen and hats are recommended and it is suggested that you bring a sweater or light jacket because frequently there is a cool breeze on the Dam after dark. Absolutely NO SWIMMING at the spillway. The Oroville Dam Spillway will be in operation on the Fourth of July, making swimming near the spillway dangerous and potentially deadly. NO SWIMMING OR BOATING is allowed between the buoy line and the Dam or Spillway. HAVE A FUN & SAFE FOURTH OF JULY! HAPPY 236TH BIRTHDAY USA ...

Get Your Outdoor Spaces Ready For Summer Living

(StatePoint) Theres no better place than your own backyard for relaxing, entertaining and enjoying the outdoors. And theres no better time than summer to spruce up your space. If youre looking to upgrade a humdrum yard into something special, here are some things to consider: Comfort Trees and awnings arent just great adornments for your yard; they provide much needed shade for you to sit outdoors comfortably and safely. Avoid summer mosquito bites by placing birdbaths and other standing water structures far from lounging and eating areas. Install LED yard lighting for night, which is less likely to attract mosquitoes than incandescent lights. Safety When planning your space, make safety a top priority. Since evenings are primetime for summer entertaining, lighting is an essential safety measure. Start by considering where you need to increase visibility. Choose post-mounted lanterns near driveways and wall-mounted lanterns next to doors for ease of access and to welcome guests. If underground wiring is required, consult an electrician or experienced landscape lighting contractor. For deck stairs or terraced paths, dont forget step lights to aid in navigation. And thoroughly check outdoor railings, steps, decks and porches to make sure they are steady and that no nails or boards have come loose.

Beauty Your yard is an extension of your home, so dont let design and style fall by the wayside when planning its look. For a touch of natural beauty, consider planting a flower garden to attract butterflies and humming birds. Illuminate paths and define edges where the garden or grass meet walkways, says Jeff Dross, corporate director of education and industry trends for Kichler Lighting, a leading supplier of outdoor and landscape lighting for consumers and contractors. The interplay of light and shadow adds magic to the night. By carefully placing accent lights at upward or downward angles and using wall wash lighting, you can silhouette trees and direct shadows. Capture the nighttime loveliness of water features like ponds with LED lights specially built for underwater illumination. For best results, consult a landscape lighting expert. More information on landscape lighting can be found at www.kichler.com or www.landscapelighting.com. You can also receive referrals to Kichler-certified landscape lighting contractors by clicking Need a Contractor? Energy-Savings Dont let your exterior spaces drive up your homes energy bills. New LED deck and landscape lights are low-maintenance, cost effective options. Lasting up to 40,000 hours -- about 15 years -- these fixtures use 75 percent less energy than incandescent lights. Since outdoor lighting is often left on all night or for many hours at a time, savings from LED lighting can really add up, Dross says. Remember to avoid cheaper LED lights with a bluish cast that many find unattractive. Opt instead for a warm white light, such as Kichlers Design Pro LED landscape lights. Dont just dream about the perfect outdoor space. For a great season, transform your yard into a beautiful, fun place.

Asthma Sufferers: Get Informed!

(StatePoint) If youre one of the estimated 25 million Americans who suffer from asthma, you know what its like to experience symptoms such as coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. To raise awareness and understanding of this serious and growing health problem, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation and Genentech have joined with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) to launch The Asthma Express, an educational awareness program to help bring allergic asthma to the forefront. The program highlights the increasing number of people suffering from the disease and how it affects them. The program encourages people to get screened to help determine if their asthma is uncontrolled and to talk with an asthma specialist, like an allergist or pulmonologist, about their results and if they should be screened for allergic asthma. The Asthma Express is stopping in selected cities across the U.S., educating people at community health fairs about asthma, allergic asthma and some available testing options. In each city, the educational experience features: Interactive iPad stations where people can learn more about allergic asthma. Free testing options to see if your asthma is uncontrolled and if allergens may play a role in your asthma. A take home educational kit to help people talk with their healthcare provider about the disease. Many things can trigger or worsen asthma symptoms, leading to uncontrolled asthma that may vary and recur over time. Of the different types of asthma, allergic asthma is the most common form affecting approximately 60 percent of all asthma sufferers in the U.S. Allergic asthma is caused by sensitivity to year-round allergens in the air that trigger an allergic reaction that can lead to asthma attacks and symptoms. It is also associated with IgE, a type of antibody responsible for most allergic reactions. Typically your healthcare provider will use a skin or blood test to see if your asthma is caused by allergens in the

air. It is important to understand what could trigger your allergic asthma to help better control your disease, says Dr. Travis Stork, ER doctor and host of the Emmy award-winning talk show The Doctors. Many people living with asthma and allergic asthma have triggers. Identifying your triggers can help you work with your doctor to determine the most appropriate course of action. The one thing I always tell patients: Empower yourself. When it comes to asthma, find out if your asthma is allergic asthma. Only your healthcare provider can tell you if you have allergic asthma. Be sure to talk to your doctor. To find out more about allergic asthma and when The Asthma Express may be coming to a city near you, visit www.AsthmaExpress.com. Dr. Stork is being compensated for his participation in this educational campaign which is sponsored by Genentech and Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation.

Get Ready For Summer Cycling

Whether youre a casual rider or a serious cyclist, there are some important steps to take before you hit the trails and streets this summer. If its been awhile since you last used your bike, you may want to do a quick tune-up to ensure its in great shape for riding. Check for loose parts, inflate your tires, and lube the chain. Ensure your quick release levers on your wheels are closed and that your brakes work. Dont leave the house without testing your rear and front lights. You dont want to be caught after dark without working lights. Now your bike is ready for an outing! Dont forget to wear a helmet, apply plenty of sunscreen, and keep yourself hydrated.

Replace Your Old Light Bulbs This Season

CFLs Unlike incandescent bulbs, CFLs contain minute amounts of mercury gas which produce invisible ultraviolet (UV) light. When the UV light hits the white coating inside the fluorescent bulb, it changes into the light you see. CFLs use up to 75 percent less energy than incandescents and last up to 10 times longer. But because they operate with a delayed start, they can take up to three minutes to reach full light output. Opt for CFLs anywhere full-brightness isnt immediately needed, like bedrooms and common areas. For enhanced ambiance and energy savings, try a dimmable bulb like GEs new Energy Smart Dimmable Spiral CFL, which allows you to dim your lights down to five percent. Halogens Halogen bulbs have a tungsten filament just like standard incandescents, but use 28 percent less energy. When lit, tungsten from the filament evaporates into the bulbs gas, providing illumination. Halogen bulbs are traditionally used for high-intensity reading lamps, outdoor lighting, and display lighting, but are now commonly used for general purposes too. Hybrids For the energy-savings of CFLs, but the look, and instant brightness of incandescents, try a hybrid. For example, GE Lightings Bright From the Start Energy Smart CFL, an ENERGY STAR qualified Bulb, is housed in an incandescent-shaped bulb and hides an instant-on halogen capsule inside the swirl of a CFL. LEDs LEDs are small light sources illuminated by movement of electrons through semiconductor material. Though still considered an expensive option, this technology will pay for itself. LEDs last more than two decades, as much as 25 times longer than incandescents and halogens, and up to three times longer than CFLs. LEDs allow for compact, design-forward fixtures and are ideal for illuminating areas where homeowners dont have to worry about changing the bulb often. Opt for a design like GEs Energy Smart LED bulbs, which allow light to be directed all around, not just in one direction like most LEDs, and have incandescent-like dimming capabilities. More information on energy efficient lighting, including an energy savings calculator, can be found at www.gelighting. com/lighttransforms. How many facts does it take to get you to change your light bulb? Make a big impact with small actions now.

(StatePoint) The way you light your home could be putting a needless strain on your pocketbook and the planet. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, if every household replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, we would save enough energy to light three million homes for a year, trim $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent nine billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions yearly. And just think how much you can save if you swapped all your old incandescent light bulbs for new, energy-efficient ones. If youve heard the terms CFL, halogen and LED, you know you have options when it comes to efficient lighting. But if youre unsure whats right for you, spend a moment, brushing up on the different types of bulbs and where they work best in your home:

Protect Your Skin All Year, Not Just During the Summer
The sun is out and the days are warmer. This means more time spent outside swimming, camping, gardening, exercising, and barbecuing. Adults should protect themselves from excessive sun exposure while enjoying these activities and be especially vigilant to protect children because severe sunburns in childhood may greatly increase risk of melanoma in later life. Sunburns damage the skin and the damage can lead to skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, accounts for less than 5% of skin cancer cases, but it causes the most skin cancer deaths and is more likely than other skin tumors to spread to other parts of the body. According to Aimee Myles, Health Education Specialist for Butte County Public Health Department, It is important to follow these steps to prevent sunburns that can do lasting damage to the skin. Encourage children to play in the shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the suns rays are the strongest. Adults should also limit their time in the sun during these hours, and apply sunscreen liberally if out in the sun during this time. Apply sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher 30 minutes before going outside every day. Reapply every two hours and after swimming, sweating, or toweldrying. Check the expiration Slap! on a hat that shades the face, neck, and ears. (Recommended by the American Cancer Society) Check with a doctor before sun exposure if you are taking any prescription drugs. Some medications interact with the sun to produce rashes or other side effects. Beware of reflected sunlight; Ultraviolet (UV) rays reflect off water, sand, and snow. UV rays also reach below waters surface. When caught early, skin cancer is very treatable. It is recommended that people do a skin self-examination which consists of regularly looking over the entire body, including the back, scalp, soles of feet, between toes and on the palms of the hands. If there are any changes in the size, color, shape or texture of a mole, the development of a new mole, or any other unusual changes in the skin, you should see a dermatologist (a doctor specializing in skin) immediately. For more information about skin cancer and sun protection contact a local dermatologist or the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345, or visit the American Academy of Dermatology website at www. aad.org.

Burglaries Rise In Summer Months

(SPM Wire) Summer is the time for sun-splashed vacations. Its also busy season for burglars, as time away from home or an unlocked door or window could be a cue to strike. According to the FBI, July and August have the highest burglary rates. And burglaries typically are crimes of opportunity. Homes without security systems are about three times more likely to be broken into, the Electronic Security Association reports. A popular choice these days is the ADT Home Security System, which comes with motion detectors and 24-hour alarm monitoring. Call 1-800-429-2144 to learn more about ADTs systems and the companys free offers and guarantees. Then enjoy your summer with increased peace of mind.

Second Annual Links for Literacy Golf Tournament Raises $4,804 for New Childrens Library Books
The second annual Links for Literacy Golf Tournament Fundraiser, held at beautiful Tuscan Ridge Golf Course on Monday, June 18, was a great success by all accounts. The tournament, sponsored by the Chico News & Review, raised $4,804 for new childrens library books, and involved many community library supporters for a day of fun in the sun. The weather was just right at the 18 Hole Scramble, for which a new car, motorcycle, or years worth of groceries would be awarded for a perfect Hole in One. Library volunteers monitored the Hole in One opportunities with as much enthusiasm as the golfers trying their best for the big prizes. A raffle of community donated items was held immediately following the tournament, as well as an award ceremony for teams with the longest drive, shots closest to the pin, and more. Since the organization of the first Links for Literacy Golf Tournament Fundraiser, the Chico News & Review ad team defined a clear goal of nurturing the love of reading among our area youth. Childrens books purchased with the funds will be divided equally among all six Butte County Library branches in Biggs, Chico, Durham, Gridley, Oroville, and Paradise. The children of each community will benefit from the generosity of the tournament host, organizers, and sponsors when they find brand new library books to read at their nearest branch. Patrons may visit branches during regular hours, or visit the library website 24 hours a day, seven days a week at http:// www.buttecounty.net/bclibrary to check account status, renew loans, request books from other branches, access databases and tutors, check out eBooks, and much more.

Retirement In Need Of Reinvention

(NAPSI)Retirement is a concept thats constantly being reinvented. A comfortable retirement wasnt even a widespread economic goal until after World War IIand its changing again, as the economy is making that goal more difficult to reach. Fortunately, seniors do have options. According to executives at The Lifeline Program, seniors must now look well beyond traditional tools if they want some sort of retirement. For most seniors, the notion of ending their work life at age 65 with a golf course membership and a gold watch is no longer the norm. Recent studies show that most seniors are working longer with little hope of an idyllic retirement. Traditional sources of retirement income can no longer be relied on. Pensions have become rare and many seniors have not saved enough. The recession and housing crash have hurt retirement accounts and housing values. Financial-planning experts suggest saving more, but thats not always possible. Other options do exist, though, and its important to do your research. For example, performing a reverse mortgage on a home, selling a life insurance policy through a life settlement and exploring alternative investments are all tactics that can add financial security and help seniors realize some of their dreams for retirement. For Joan Clary (age 70), a substitute schoolteacher from Oakhurst, Calif., the dream was to meet actress Betty White. Fortunately, Clary won the recent Lifeline Meet Betty White Facebook contest and was flown to Los Angeles to meet the actress. Clary was thrilled to win. As I turn 70, I realize Betty is one of my last role models. Its a joy to meet her after admiring her for so many years, said Clary. Founded in 1989, The Lifeline Program offers life settlements as a new financial planning option to baby boomers and retirees. The company partners with insurance agents, broker dealers and financial planners to establish life settlement business lines. For more information, visit www. thelifeline.com, follow the company on Facebook at Facebook.com/LifelineProgram, on Twitter at twitter.com/LifelineProgram or on YouTube at youtube.com/user/ TheLifelineProgram. Gardening with Alex

Alexandra Heath Garden Art
A garden is a thing of beauty and a job forever. Anonymous
Every garden, even one that is full of rocks and cactus, is a thing of beauty. But gardens, as such, are planted and tended by human beings (for the most part) and it seems a particularly human desire to want to embellish their surroundings. Im no different and have decorated my garden with a variety of arty objects. Now that summer is in full swing and there is little to do in the garden every day except water the planting beds and pots, harvest the vegetables and cut owers for the table, you might want to decorate your garden as well. Using the four elements earth, air, re and water--as a guide, here are a few suggestions to enhance the beauty of your garden. Earth Art: Stepping-stones and poetry stones are very popular and most craft stores have kits for making one-of-akind cement stones. Having children and grandchildren create handprint stones is a way to interest them in the garden, as well as give it a sense of legacy. A variety of natural objects, such as small pebbles, or pieces of glass or colored marbles can be used to add texture and visual interest. For those on a budget, painted stones are a nice addition. All that is needed are some at round stones (river rock is a good choice,) some paint and your imagination. In my garden, there is a weathered stone painted white with the Chinese symbol for Energy in black on the surface. Quick, easy and cheap! Air Art: Nothing brightens a garden like the sound of wind chimes! There is such a wide selection available that there is something for every budget, from unique sand-cast bells to tiny chimes. If youre looking for a garden project to do with your children this summer, you can have them collect some seashells, bits of cones and bark and string them together to make a wind mobile. Whirligigs and windsocks capture the air and add both color and motion to the garden. Even a bit of cloth attached to a long pole is enough to catch the wind, and long strips of brightly colored cloth on long thin poles are typical in Japanese gardens. Native American prayer ties are a way to bring both Air and Spirit into the garden. These are small pieces of cloth usually red annelin which a tiny amount of tobacco is placed. The corners are gathered together to make a pouch, the neck of which is tied closed with a piece of string. Then the bundles are tied to tree branches or to long, sturdy plant stalks along with prayers of thanksgiving, gratitude and peace. Fire Art: For some of us, the only re we use in the garden is to light mosquito coils or citronella candles so we can enjoy evenings outdoors. But the sun is the ultimate source of re and we can capture its energy using solar collectors. A couple of years ago I found solar Chinese lanterns at Big Lots on sale for $2 a piece. What a bargain! Im still using them in the garden. There are so many choices for solar garden art its hard to know where to begin. Look for bargains and take them out of the garden during winter and they should last for many years, although you may have to replace the Ni-cad batteries eventually. Water Art: Gardens use water, theres no doubt about it, but so do the many little creatures that live thereand not just mosquitoes! Fountains are lovely and create both sound and watering holes for birds, bees, butteries, lizardseven dogs and cats. Years ago, when we got a puppy, I found him sitting in the water fountain one day! For those on a budget, shells lled with a bit of water make wonderful birdbaths, since birds prefer only 1-2 inches of water in a basin. I recently found an article about making a leaf birdbath using a large leaf and cement. The project costs less than $10 and you can nd directions at www.squidoo.com/ garden-crafts-birdbath. So while youre waiting for the tomatoes to ripen this summer, use your imagination, a bit of ingenuity and the guidance of the four elements to make your own garden truly a thing of beauty.
