Incorporation and Processing Instructions

These additives can be incorporated during any stage of the production process including post-addition.

Solvent-borne coatings BYK-370 BYK-371 BYK-373 BYK-375 BYK-377 recommended suitable Solvent-free coatings Aqueous systems Topcoats containing OH-groups UV-reactive topcoats

Function
These additives orient to the paint surface and can be crosslinked into the polymer network due to their reactivity, and are therefore fixed at the paint surface. These additives improve slip, solvent resistance, weather resistance, anti-blocking and provide less dirt retention. When crosslinked to the paint surface by their reactive groups, the aforementioned properties are maintained for a longer duration in the paint system than what can be achieved with standard, non-reactive silicones. These additives reduce surface tension and thus improve substrate wetting. They also improve flow and leveling and avoid Bnard cell formation.

Special Features and Benefits

BYK-370 BYK-370 reacts via its primary OH-groups with the binder and is preferably used in solvent-borne two-pack polyurethanes. It can also crosslink with the following binder systems: alkyd/melamine, polyester/melamine, acrylic/melamine, self-crosslinking acrylates, and epoxies. BYK-370 increases the surface slip. BYK-371 is acrylic functional and therefore suitable for all UV-reactive systems (i.e., wood and furniture coatings, paper varnishes). BYK-371 supports the orientation of flatting agents and yields a uniform flatting effect. Improved substrate wetting is demonstrated primarily in UV-curing roller varnishes; in UV-curing flow coat systems, BYK-371 stabilizes the curtain. BYK-373 is hydroxy functional, as is the functionality of BYK-370, however, it contains an increased number of OH-groups in each molecule. Therefore the reduction of the surface tension and the increase of surface slip are notably less. It can be used in the same binder systems as BYK-370. Furthermore, this product can be used in UV-crosslinkable wood and furniture coatings. In this application field, BYK-373 greatly improves leveling and, for curtain coating systems, stabilizes the curtain. When BYK-373 is used in UV-crosslinkable systems, the reactive component of the additive is not activated. BYK-375 is especially suitable for use in aqueous systems with a low amount of co-solvent, and displays excellent compatibility with these systems. It reacts with the binder via its primary OH-groups and therefore is preferably used in crosslinking systems. It can react into the following binder systems: two-pack polyurethane, alkyd/ melamine, polyester/melamine, acrylic/melamine and acrylate/epoxy-combinations. The product improves substrate wetting and leveling at low dosages. In most cases only half the amount of a conventional silicone is needed to optimize substrate wetting, slip and tape release of UV curable, 2 pack PU, polyester/melamine and waterborne topcoats. Due to the good compatibility in common binder systems, the production of highly transparent varnishes is possible. Typically it does not cause turbidity in clearcoats. Sanding is required for recoat adhesion. The OH groups of BYK-377 can react with polyisocyanates.

Special Note
BYK-370 BYK-371 BYK-373 BYK-375 If these additives are used in paint systems in which the reactive groups are crosslinked into the polymer network, please note the following: Before recoating, the surface has to be sanded carefully and uniformly to ensure sufficient adhesion. In exterior coatings, the additives are removed (together with the uppermost layer of the resin) relatively quickly from the coating surface due to the normal weathering process. With the above conditions in mind, the longterm effectiveness of the particular binder system (in combination with the additive) must be evaluated. Due to its OH-functionality, BYK-375 retains its excellent properties (such as high surface slip) even after sterilization/pasteurization, as is the case with many aqueous can coatings for exterior use. BYK-377 is OH-functional.
