SOTHEBYS LONDON EVENING SALE OF OLD MASTER & BRITISH PAINTINGS TOTALS 32,268,650 / $50,600,470 / 40,174,408
Willem van de Velde the Youngers Historic Dutch Naval Battle Scene Sells For 5.3m / $8.3m / 6.6m - Twice Its High Estimate and Returns to Holland Six New Artist Records Set

LONDON, Wednesday 4th July, 2012 Tonight Sothebys Old Master & British Paintings Evening Sale realised a total of 32,268,650 / $50,600,470 / 40,174,408, comfortably within the pre-sale estimate of 26.7 - 40.4 million. The evenings top lot was a historic naval scene by Willem van de Velde the Younger, The Surrender of the Royal Prince during the Four Days Battle, 1st- 4th June 1666, which sold for 5.3m / $8.3m / 6.6m after nine minutes of intense competition among four bidders. This fascinating example of a war artist at work 350 years ago was considered of such national importance that the precursor of the Rijksmuseum attempted to buy the painting when it was offered for sale in 1800, but was outbid. Tonight it was bought by a private Dutch collector, and so will return to Holland. Alex Bell, Sothebys Co-Chairman, Old Master Paintings, Worldwide, commented: These are exciting times for the Old Masters and British Paintings market. We saw strong prices tonight in an extremely dynamic sale, in which collectors were prepared to go head- to-head

for the very best works. The auction attracted an encouraging number of new clients to Sothebys and we saw consistently strong participation from the new markets. HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS EVENINGS SALE: Pieter Brueghel the Youngers The Battle Between Carnival and Lent, the artists most accomplished work to come to the market in recent memory, achieved 4,521,250 / $7,089,772 / 5,628,948 (est. 4-6 million). Depicting the Brueghelian themes of the folklore and customs associated with the Shrovetide festival as well as the contrasts of human nature, the panel is in an exceptional state of preservation.

The sale featured two masterpieces of the German Renaissance: Lucas Cranach the Elders The Feilitzsch Altarpiece, sold for 4,297,250 / $6,738,518 / 5,350,068 (est. 4-6 million). This remarkable work, commissioned around 1511 had belonged to only three families in its 500-year history and had never before appeared at auction. Hans Baldung Griens panel The Virgin as Queen of Heaven Suckling the Infant Christ, sold for 2,113,250 / $3,313,787 / 2,630,992 (est. 1-1.5 million). Appearing at auction for the first time in more than 30 years, the panel had previously been in the collection of the Electors of Hohenzollern and of Robert Von Hirsch, one of the greatest collectors of the 20th century.

Other Notable Results: Christ Amongst the Doctors, a rare example by sixteenth century Italian artist Orazio Borgianni, a favourite of the European aristocracy, sold for 3,401,250 / $5,333,500 / 4,234,550 (est. 400,000 - 600,000), setting a record for the artist. The painting has a notably early provenance, having been listed in the inventory of a Spanish diplomat in 1631. Travellers Halted at a Country Inn, most likely a unique example of a collaborative work by the Ostade brothers, Adriaen and Isack, sold for 2,169,250 / $3,401,601 / 2,700,712 (est. 1.8-2.5 million). Portrait of Edward VI from the Circle of William Scrots sparked animated competition and sold for 1,777,250 / $2,786,906 / 2,212,673, more than twice its estimate of 500,000 700,000. A 15th century French-school portrait of Louis XI, the only surviving lifetime portrait in oil of the king, eclipsed its estimate to sell for 735,650 / $1,153,573 / 915,883.

Auction records were also set this evening for:

Global Buyers Battle for Treasures at Sothebys London

Estimates Defied as Collectors Pursue Exceptional Works in Treasures, Princely Taste Sale Svres Vases soar above expectations to more than 1.7 million Shah of Persias Elephant Automaton Clock sells to Asian Buyer for 1.6 million

WEDNESDAY, 4th July 2012 This evenings sale of Treasures, Princely Taste at Sothebys London saw collectors from across the globe compete vigorously for exceptional works of art and furniture. Many of the works in the sale were pursued to prices well in excess of pre-sale estimates, chief among which was a pair of gilt-bronze-mounted Svres porcelain vases (c. 1788-1790); realising 1,777,250, they tripled their pre-sale estimate of 600,000.* Close behind the vases was the Shah of Persias musical elephant automaton clock (c. 1780), which sold to an Asian collector for an impressive 1.6 million, at the high end of its 1-2 million pre-sale estimate. Together, the 39 lots offered this evening realised 9,507,800 / $14,909,181 / 11,837,193, with 72% sold by lot and 84%

sold by value. 44% of the works sold in this evenings sale realised prices in excess of their pre-sale high estimates. Mario Tavella, Sothebys Deputy Chairman, Europe, commented: The superb results this evening confirm the continuing demand for the rarest and highest-quality furniture and decorative arts. Buyers from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East competed for beautiful works with noble heritage. In particular, a pair of Svres porcelain vases saw spirited bidding, realising a phenomenal 1.7 million. Having concluded our third year of Treasures sales, I am delighted with the results which are testament to the enduring strength of this market.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SALE:

The Svres vases, referenced above: the vases rare sky-blue colour was developed by Svres specifically for Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette for the decoration of the royal Rambouillet estate. The gilt-bronze mounts can be almost certainly attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire, who made pieces for Louis XVIs bedchamber at Compigne and for Marie-Antoinettes apartments at Versailles.

The Elephant Clock, referenced above: the magnificent automaton clock of a rare and impressive scale was most probably acquired by Naser al-Din Shah of Persia (183196) in London in the 1890s, and typifies the intriguing and inventive objects produced in London in the late 18th century for the Chinese market.

Five exceptionally rare masterpieces of 16th and 17th century silver from a European princely family, which originally formed part of the collection of Fernando II, King of Portugal, realised a combined total of 1,053,850. The top lot of the group was a magnificent silver gilt flagon from the first half of the 16th century, which realised 565,250 seven times its pre-sale estimate of 80,000.

A pair of Chinese celadon Vases aux Tritons circa 1770 sold for a remarkable 577,250, nearly quadrupling its pre-sale low estimate of 150,000. The elegant pair of celadon vases with exquisite gilt-bronze mounts is extremely rare and highly desirable amongst collectors, and was acquired by the Rothschild family in the second half of the 19th century.

A Swiss parcel-gilt silver drinking cup in the form of a lark, Nicholas Matthey, Neuchtel, late 17th century, achieved 433,250, soaring above its estimates of 200,000-250,000. This ancestral drinking cup of the von Lerber family is in the form of a skylark, a charge of the family coat-of-arms and intended to be drunk from at guild festivities.

A gilt-bronze and patinated-bronze ink stand by Juste-Aurle Meissonnier, Louis XV, circa 1735, realised 361,250 against estimates of 200,000-300,000. This superb encrier is a perfect early example of the 18th century Rococo vogue, of which Meissonnier was a pioneering and influential figure.

A chessboard with pagoda figurines and chess pieces in mother-of-pearl and aventurine glass circa 1720-30, realised 445,250, well in excess of its estimates of 200,000-300,000. The chessboard comes by repute from Frederick Augustus III (1750-1827), Elector of Saxony, who according to family tradition presented it as a gift to Comte Louis Gabriel du Buat-Nanay in 1772. The king and queen figures, in the form of seated Chinese men and made of white Meissen porcelain, reflect the enthusiasm for Chinoiseries and the exoticism of the East.
