Administration for Children and Families Region II 26 Federal Plaza, Rm 4114 New York, NY 10278

July 16, 2012 Dear Colleagues: Bienvenidos and welcome to New York City for the inaugural East Regional Fatherhood and Healthy Families Summer Institute. I am pleased to greet you on behalf of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families Acting Assistant Secretary, George Sheldon and the Region II office, representing New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Collaborations and partnerships are essential to our efforts to support and strengthen Families. I am very pleased that several components of the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Region IV and the African American Healthy Marriage Initiative (AAHMI), are partnering with the Fathers and Families Coalition of America and the Columbia University School of Social Work to sponsor this groundbreaking event. This institute offers us an opportunity to recommit ourselves to the vital work that is being done in support of strengthening families, healthy marriages and responsible fatherhood. Father absence and family breakdown is a growing concern in America; it is an issue that is at the root of many challenges that children and their families face. When dads aren't around, young people are more likely to drop out of school, use drugs, be involved in the criminal justice system, and become young parents themselves. Research tells us that fathers have a powerful influence on their childs well-being, including cognitive ability and educational achievement. For these and so many other reasons, clearly, we want to work to encourage fathers to be a positive force in their childs life. One very easy and successful way we can champion father involvement is through Dads Take Your Child to School, an effort to encourage fathers to actively participate in their childs education and school. ACF has been an integral partner with DTYCTS in New York State and New Jersey and I encourage all in attendance to get involved with an existing effort or begin one in your State. Last year in NYS, 9000 dads participated. You can find out more about Dads Take Your Child to School-New York at http://sites.google.com/site/dtyctsny. Through the AAHMI, Family Strengthening Coalitions have been formed all across the country. In Region II, we have established two coalitions; one in New York State and one New Jersey. We meet quarterly and invite your participation. ACF looks forward to supporting your great work. Best wishes for a productive and exciting few days in our great City. Sincerely,

Joyce A. Thomas Regional Administrator

Raised in East Orange, NJ, Kobie Brown was raised with a strong sense of community and purpose. Raised by a mother who was an educator and artist, and a father who was a nancial analyst, who spent his younger years as a member of SNCC (The Student's Non-violent Coordinating Committee), Kobie learned early on that the talents and gifts that he was given should be used to impact and change the world. Growing up in a home "full of books and records", his love for history, the arts and culture came from his family and provided the motivation to enter the music industry. Growing up in the hip-hop rich culture of the time, he formed bonds with local talent including: Queen Latifah, Naughty By Nature and The Fugees among others. While studying English at Morehouse College, he parlayed his relationships into a job working at Flavor Unit Records and Management with Queen Latifiah and her business partner, Shakim Compere. At Flavor Unit he was involved in everything from marketing to producer management and A&R. After leaving Flavor Unit, Kobie went on to work with the legendary production and songwriting duo, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis before returning to school to complete his studies and eventually continuing his career as a music executive at Jive Records. Browns love for lm comes from the potential of marrying the elements of narrative, music, and motion picture. But more importantly, it comes from his upbringing and understanding that "God has gifted each of us with unique talents and resources that should be used to breed ideas, opportunity, success, comfort and life that advance community and humanity." The path to his rst documentary, Fatherless to Fatherhood, began in the summer of 2008 when Brown began to toy with the idea of compiling a book of testimonials from friends and associates. His rst interview was with a Morehouse college classmate. As the discussion turned to fatherhood and his friend gave his recollection of the often inexplicable pain resulting from his absent father's shortcomings, Brown began to consider the pervasiveness of father absence and its social, political, emotional and economic implications. It was then that Kobie realized that a documentary lm might be an e ective way to address the challenges that many face, but most have the tendency to ignore / sweep under the rug. He began to research and does interviews with various people, from celebrities to the common man; Fatherless To Fatherhood is the result. It is a poignant testament to the importance of the male in the family structure and the results of his presence as well as his absence. Brown uses his childhood teachings, creative abilities, civic commitment and the voices of those in the lm as a platform in which others can see themselves. "The path of our individual and collective success, and failure, is shaped by the families and communities from whom we evolve. Unfortunately, examples of quality manhood, fatherhood and healthy relationships are not observed, displayed or talked about often enough that they can be readily identi ed in communities and households that need them the most. This lm serves to provoke thought, ignite discussion and hopefully engender transformative change around the ideas and practices that many have assigned to the value of fatherhood and family."
