Learning Opportunities in Research Lab

Learning objectives 1. Detail of organization 1. Name of the organization 2. Year of establishment.

Learning Opportunities

3. Parental body (e.g. DST, DBT, CSIR etc) 4. Major vision & mission 5. Head of the organization and administrative structure. 6. Name of scientists and para- scientific staff with specialization. 7. What are the major Central facilities in the organization such as library, Central Instrument facility, special facility etc. 2. Objectives areas 3. Major achievements and thrust 1. With what objectives the organization/research lab was established? 2. What is/are the thrust area of research? 3. What is the core expertise of scientist working in the organization? Major achievements since inception in terms of a) Product development b) Technology development c) Patents d) Paper published 4. Major research projects Project completed (give one paragraph for each project) Ongoing projects (give objectives of each project)

5. Classification of projects

Classify the projects based on three major categories: 1 Product Driven: Project aimed at developing product(s) that may fulfill one or more of the following criteria: a) Development of completely new product. b) Modification of existing product to suit consumer demand c) Development of product, which is not available in free market e.g. defense related products. 2 Technology Driven): Project aimed at developing new technology that may fulfill one or more of the following criteria: a) Cost effective b) Greener (eco friendly) c) Efficient in terms of Energy consumption/space utilization/ reducing the process time. Etc. 3. Research based projects: Research oriented projects are aimed at generation of new ideas and knowledge that may or may not have direct practical application, but may lead to the development of new area of researches which in turn be used for development of market based products or will fulfill the demand of society. Example is nanotechnology based projects.

6. Projects Life Cycle

Life cycle of the project describes the various stages starting from concept generation. Student is required to know the detailed process for the following steps: a) Explain the process involved in conceptualizing the project. b) Formulation of project with PERT chart c) Explain the processes involved in writing research proposal and identification of funding

agencies/sponsors. d) Explain the processes involved in internal evaluation / assessment. e) Explain the procedure involved in submitting proposal to various funding agencies/industry and defense f) Identification and process of appointing manpower for the project. g) Explain the procedure involved in procurement of equipment & consumables h) Management of working on the project i) How progress report is prepared, communicated and assessed. j) Processes involved in publications and patent k) Preparation of working manual (for product driven projects) or flow diagram (for technology driven projects). l) Processes involved in technology transfer from Lab to commercial use. m) Preparation and submission of the project completion report. 7. Measuring output Student will learn how the output of the project is assessed for each type of project mentioned in (item no.5) Category 1 (Product Driven) a) Is the product scalable for industrial production? Explain the factors that determine the scalability of the product and identify the bottlenecks. b) How the product competes with existing one in the market? c) Whether patent obtained or applied? Explain the processes involved in obtaining the patent / copywrite / trademark. d) Whether any research paper published.

Category 2 (Technology Driven): a) Compare the developed technology with the existing one. b) How does it meet the requirement of the Industry? c) Does it lead to the development of new product or a different process for existing product? e) Is the technology patentable? Whether patent obtained or applied? Explain the processes involved in technology patent. f) Whether the technology has been transferred to any Industry? Explain how (process involved) the technology is being transferred to the commercial use. g) Whether the project generated research papers? Category 3 (Research based projects): a) Whether all objectives stated in the projects are fulfilled? If not, state the reasons. b) What is the new addition in knowledge in the field? c) Whether this knowledge will lead to the development of new research field? d) Whether the outcome of project will have any practical applications? e) How many research papers published or patent obtained?
