House Etho
House Ethos
Pemberley House is home to around 50 boys who range in age from 13-18. Pemberley was purpose-built as a School Boarding House in 1904, and has offered a home away from home to generations of Bedford schoolboys for over a century. Boys education is wonderfully complicated. We at Pemberley are challenged to provide a safe, enjoyable and successful experience for boys who have so many other distractions as our world continues to change at extraordinary speed. The Pemberley boarding experience fosters in each boy an appreciation of the worth of others and the shared benefits of living in a community. Character-building values such as selflessness, humility, kindness and sportsmanship are taught and encouraged in a warm homely environment. Our Pastoral Care philosophy is guided by principles which we believe complement the overall ethos of the School. Students are treated as equals, regardless of ability, religion, culture, ethnic origin or class and are encouraged to show tolerance and understanding towards others. We provide the right conditions for students to develop their intellectual talents through a managed environment and atmosphere which values effort and is conducive to work. We aim to develop the sense of responsibility which students have for themselves, for others, and for the environment, while encouraging the development of leadership qualities. The firm and enduring relationships which exist between staff and students bear testimony to the process and are a pivotal influence in its success. The Housemasters door is always open to all boys. He works closely with his Tutors and Matrons, and is in regular contact with parents as he guides and directs the development, safety and welfare of his boys.

Bed Linen Bed linen can be provided, but we ask boys if they wish to personalise their bed areas to bring two duvet covers (one on the bed and one in the wash), which should be single bed size. Boys are encouraged to make their own beds every morning and strip their bedding for washing once a week. Bicycles These should be named and kept in good Th e H working order. Boys must obey the ous Highway Code and motoring law when e they ride bicycles (eg. lights must be fitted to bicycles at night). Boys must bring a good bicycle lock with them. All bicycles must be kept locked away in the House bike shed and not left unattended. We strongly advise boys to wear cycle helmets.

Chapel All full boarders, and any weekly boarders staying in the House at weekends, must attend Chapel services. Clothing Please ensure that ALL property, including mufti and shoes, is clearly marked with the owners name. Please send extra nametapes for use during term as needed (if necessary we can purchase additional nametapes during term-time, for which you will be bluebilled). Our friendly Matrons Delia and Giulia supervise the repair of reasonable wear and tear and will name any articles given to them if bought new whilst at school. Unnamed laundry is discarded or given to charity if not claimed by the end of term. During evenings and at weekends mufti is worn - casual jeans, sweaters etc.; this will be washed as time and space allow. Please ensure that all items can be washed on a normal 40 wash cycle and dried in tumble dryers; designer items which need special washing methods and temperatures should not be brought to School. We can send blazers to the Dry Cleaners during holidays and the costs are blue-billed.

Computers The House provides several computers and printers to which everyone has access and these are linked to the School network. All boys are expected to use ICT facilities appropriately for School work and are bound by the Schools Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). Laptops are by no means essential, but they do allow boys very flexible access to computing facilities. It is also possible to link these to the school network via a wireless link. Through this link, boys will be able to connect to the School server, from which they can access the internet ! and any academic materials which are xing stored on the School systems. Boys Rela can use their own laptops during Prep, but these will be confiscated temporarily if they are used for any non-academic purpose! On Friday nights laptops cannot be used between 9 & 10pm. We strongly recommend that the boys plug their laptops into surge breakers. Desktop PCs are not allowed in the House due to limitations on the electrical supply. Days Out If boys are invited out by local parents of day boys, we will confirm the arrangements with whoever has invited them out and we require written confirmation from both boys parents/guardians. Unless we have these written consents, the boys will not be allowed to leave the House. Full boarders who stay out on a Saturday night must return in time for Chapel on Sunday. Dress & Personal Hygiene Boys are expected to follow the School Rules applying to uniform and general appearance. Boys should not leave the House in mufti before 4.15pm on any weekdays, even during exam leave. Boys are expected to pay attention to their personal hygiene and shower or bathe daily. Duties Boys are expected to perform various duties, following a rota system that is organised by the Houseparents at the start of each term.

The Jack Beresford Games Room Jack Beresford, CBE, (1 January 1899 3 December 1977), is Pemberleys most decorated sportsman, a rower who won medals at five Olympic Games in succession, an Olympic record in rowing, which has since been tied by Steven Redgrave. The Games Room offers relaxation after a hard day of work and sports. A variety of activities is available, including pool, table tennis and table football. Boys can also keep fit by rolling out some miles on the exercise bikes.

House Activities Boarding life can be intense there is always academic work to do, and music, sport, drama and extra-curricular activities place heavy demands on boarders time. Its vital therefore that we find time in our busy lives for rest and recreation as a House community, and so we organise House Trips from time to time to enjoy new experiences together as a community and to take a break from the stresses and routines of the term. Activities include going to see a show in Londons West End, paintballing, ten-pin bowling, indoor sky-diving, ice-skating, wake boarding, snow skiing, cinema trips and days out in Cambridge. The cost of these activities is added to the end of term bill.

At the end of the Autumn term, the junior boys traditionally perform a short play for the entertainment of other members of the House and any parents who are able to attend, which is followed by a Christmas concert given by our talented musicians. After being treated to some mince pies we all go to the Boarders Carol Service in Chapel. The last night of the Autumn Term sees the ever-popular House Christmas Dinner: a fine way to celebrate together!

We also enjoy a number of very important regular events in the Pemberley House calendar. House Singing is the first major event of the year: all members of the boarding community practise songs for an adrenaline-filled night of competition. In an electric atmosphere, somewhere between that of a concert and a football match, the six Houses compete for trophies and pride. Pemberley has a proud record of success in this competition (Unison Cup winners in 2009 & 2010), but win or lose, we always enjoy a party back at the house afterwards.

The House Quiz is another popular event at the end of Spring term. Boys pit their general knowledge against each other (and the House staff) in teams, with praise and prizes going to the winners. At the end of the Summer term the House BBQ (cooked by the Housemaster and OB/Masterchef winner Dhruv Baker) gives the boys a great opportunity to relax and unwind after a hard years work and the pressure of exams. Housemasters Business The Housemaster is always available for routine business. Money can be collected for specific purposes, chits can be issued for the School Shop, House cheques can be written. Any cost is added to the end of term bill. Major purchases will only be added with the specific permission of parents or guardians, and I will not issue more than 30 cash without parental permission. Internet Access Boys are only allowed to access the Internet through the School server, where there are strict limitations on access to certain sites. Boys Common Room The Boys Common Room is available to all boys and is where newspapers such as The Daily Telegraph, The Times and The Guardian are found. There is a flat screen LED TV with Sky subscription and a DVD player for general use. The TV may not be turned on before 5pm Monday-Saturday. The JCR is a great place to relax and enjoy the company of housemates. There is also a piano for the musically keen! Late Teas If boys are away from School and miss School tea due to a School fixture or event and return late to Pemberley, they qualify for 3.50 late tea money, which may then be used as payment towards a meal. Boys need to provide a receipt for the 3.50 purchase. Alternatively, the Houseparents may provide a meal. Leave of Absence The Housemasters permission is required for the following: To be absent from any School meal (except Saturday evening or Sunday) To leave Bedford for any reason To be out of the House after 7 pm on any day.

If a boy is going to be late back for any reason, he should phone the Houseparents on 01234 268324 to inform them. Boys can sign themselves out of the House (using signing out book held by member of staff on duty) for returns prior to 7pm. A clear destination must be stated, and no one is to be out of the House for more than 2 hours without prior negotiation. Only Sixth Formers may leave the House after 9pm, and only with the express permission of the member of staff on duty. This is normally just for a quick Budgens run. On Saturdays, 4ths and Removes are expected back in the House by 9pm, 5ths by 10pm, and 6th formers by 11pm. On Sundays all boys must return to the House by 9.00 pm, except by prior agreement. It is absolutely imperative that the signing out rule is followed. Anyone found to be abusing these guidelines will, in the interests of their own safety, have their freedom curtailed. Upstairs 19.45pm 10.00pm 10.15pm

Lights Out 10.00pm 10.15pm 10.30pm

Sixth Formers are expected to be in their own rooms and quiet by 11pm; this allows them to continue work for a short time if necessary. On Saturdays bedtime for all is 11pm. Boys are expected to be resting in bed after Lights Out and are not allowed to use torches, mobile phones, laptops or any other device that may stop others from sleeping. The use of personal music players after Lights Out is permitted, provided that the music is inaudible to anybody else. Quiet talking for a short time after Lights Out is tolerated, but must not be excessive in volume or duration! Meals, Dining Halls and The Dhruv Baker Kitchen All boys should eat breakfast, lunch and tea at School and they are expected to be on time for meals in the Dining Halls. There are facilities for making tea, coffee and snacks in the House kitchen. Provisions such as bread, butter, cheese, jam, chocolate spread, fruit and milk are available, and we provide a supper every evening at the 9 pm House Meeting. Boys are required to wash up after themselves and keep their kitchen area clean and tidy. There is space in the boys fridge/freezer and the kitchen cupboards for storing food.

11

Dhruv Baker (Head of House 1994) was the winner of Masterchef 2010, and opened the newly named house kitchen on December 8, 2010. For health and safety reasons, all cooked food is to be prepared in the kitchen and eaten in the JCR. As well as this, all leftover food and packaging is to be disposed of in the kitchen bin. Out of date food is thrown away daily. Medical Matters Medical cards must be brought to the Boy s K house by all boys who possess them itch Dr. Danny Fenske (2 Goldington en . Road, Bedford; Telephone 01234 .. 351341) is the House Doctor, and all boys are added to his list unless you wish to remain with your own doctor (in the case of weekly boarders) All new boys are given a full medical examination during their first term Matron must be notified of any allergies or medical conditions at the start of term Boarders pink slips must be completed and returned to us at the beginning of each term No medicines, pills, etc. may be taken without the permission of whoever is on duty All medicine, whether prescribed or over-the-counter, must be kept in the House Surgery and is dispensed from there. A record is kept of all medical treatment Matrons are available throughout the day (8.00am - 6.30pm Monday Friday; 8.00am 6.00pm Saturday) and boys are encouraged to visit for a chat if they have any concerns at all. If a boy feels ill during school time, he must report to the Medical Centre in the first instance and should never simply return to the House. Any vitamins, medication or supplements that come from home must be handed over the Housemaster or Matron upon arrival, and must be accompanied by a letter stating the reason for the medication, its dosage and frequency of administration. We may ask a doctors advice about this. Medical appointments (for example, to see a doctor if a boy feels unwell, or to see a physiotherapist to treat a sports injury) are organised via Matrons, who transport boys to appointments. Boys have the option of being accompanied throughout the consultation when appropriate. Boys will be transported to hospital by a member of

12

staff if they suffer a more serious accident which needs urgent evaluation and treatment. Any routine dental and optician examinations and treatment should be arranged and carried out at home during the school holidays please. If you do not wish your son to be given non-prescription medicines, please contact the Housemaster directly to discuss this with him. Mobile Telephones All boys with mobile phones need to register them with us at the start of year and inform us of any subsequent number changes. The payment scheme is a private matter between each boy and his parents. Please note that mobile phones are kept at School and in the Boarding House at the owners risk: the Schools insurance policy does not cover the loss, theft or breakage of mobile phones. Noise Noise should be kept to a minimum, particularly in the evenings when others will want to study. In particular, your music should not disturb any other member of the House; if requested, you should be prepared to listen to your music through headphones. Personal MP3 players are strongly encouraged! Pocket Money Each boy should normally have a personal bank account. Parents and Guardians can therefore pay any pocket money into this personal bank account so the boy can withdraw his money as required. All cash and debit cards must be kept locked away, and padlocks, lockers and cash boxes are available for this purpose. Prep It is essential that all boys regard prep time as a formal and quiet study period for the entire House for the entire 100 minutes. During prep there are to be no nonacademic activities or applications running on laptops, no TV, no movement from study bedrooms, and no telephone calls. Parents are therefore requested not to phone their sons during prep times. Roll Call There is a House Meeting at 9pm each day, with additional head counts taking place periodically throughout the day. On Saturdays and Sundays Roll Call takes place at 9pm in the JCR. All boys are expected to attend these House Meetings unless they have permission from the Housemaster to be absent.

13

Takeaways Takeaway meals may be ordered at the weekends to be delivered to the House, and should arrive by 9pm at the latest on these days. There is a variety of choice locally, ranging from Chinese, Indian and Italian to Mongolian or Thai. Boys should ask for the food to be delivered to their entrance door in the Link and wait nearby until it is delivered. It is discourteous to expect the delivery man to wait for you, or to expect your housemates to come and find you!

Telephone The house payphone and boys mobile phones may not be used during Prep. Incoming calls on our private line should be restricted to calls from parents and guardians and for emergency calls for boys only. Boys should memorise our number or key it into their mobile phones: 01234 268324.

There is a pay phone in the House for the boys to use to make personal outgoing calls. There is a further telephone which accepts incoming calls only. This number is 01234 218054. Parents, guardians and friends may contact the boys at any time except during Prep (which is between 7pm and 9pm, on Monday to Friday), before 8am and after bedtime. Town During the School day the School rules on Bounds apply After the School day has finished and at weekends boys may go into town after signing out from the House. A destination must be specified, and boys must ensure that we are able to contact them by telephone in case of necessity Boys are urged to take all sensible precautions when going to town. Fourth and Remove formers must remain with a friend at all times when going to town. Fifth and Sixth formers are advised to do likewise Boys must return to the House and sign back in by 5:45pm on weekdays and by the 7pm roll call on Saturdays and Sundays, unless they have the express permission of the Housemaster (or AHM on weekends when the Housemaster is off duty) Fourth, Remove and Fifth Formers are not allowed into town at lunchtime on weekdays unless they have the express permission of the Houseparents Use of Rooms Dormitories and Sixth Form study rooms are not extra common rooms; they are the

15

personal areas where the boys will work, rest and relax! Boys should respect the space, feelings and belongings of their fellow-boarders, and may only enter another boys room if invited to do so by its occupant. In addition to these general guidelines, the following specific rules apply: All rooms should be kept tidy and clean at all times Boys are welcome to put up posters in their dorms and study areas. Drawing pins are allowed on notice boards only; other posters should be fixed to walls or cupboards with blu-tac. Posters which are considered to be inappropriate or offensive will be removed! Food (apart from sweets and crisps) are not allowed in dorms or bedrooms Litter must be placed in the bins provided Belongings should not be left lying around and only bags and shoes will be allowed on the floor Boots and trainers are to be kept in the Boot Room Suitcases and trunks must be kept in the attic All clothes should be kept in wardrobes or drawers Boys are encouraged to draw their curtains and make their beds each morning

Valuables Although Pemberley has a strong tradition as a family house with relationships being based upon mutual trust and respect, boys must exercise common sense in matters of personal and House security. All doors to the House must be kept locked shut at all times Valuables, wallets and cash must never be left lying unattended around the House Each boy is responsible for the care and safe storage of his own personal effects. Boys should accept personal responsibility for their belongings by locking away valuable items (such as laptops, mobile phones, electronic equipment and cash) when they are not being used. Each boy has a personal storage area which can be secured with a padlock, and soon all areas will additionally be equipped with a lockable cash box ; in addition any boy may request to be issued with a key for a central locker Passports, tickets and large sums of cash must be kept in the House Safe Lock-up each day will be undertaken by the House Option on duty according to the procedure in the Lock-up document Visiting Parents and Guardians are obviously welcome to visit whenever they happen to be in Bedford. We would appreciate it if Parents and Guardians could let us know when they are in the House and ask that they use our front door, not the boys entrance, unless they are simply picking their son up. Our sitting room is always available for private meetings if desired. Boys are welcome to have their friends visit the House during their free time. All

16

visitors must sign in and out of the House and are only allowed in the public areas such as the Common Room and Games Room. Only Sixth Formers may have visitors in their study rooms. All other visitors to the House (and all female visitors) must remain in the public rooms on the ground floor (JCR, Games Room and Kitchen). Weekends Weekly boarders are expected to leave Pemberley each weekend after school on Saturday. Please could parents inform us if their son is staying anywhere other than home. Weekly boarders may stay in the House at weekends under exceptional circumstances, but their parents should contact the Housemaster in advance for permission. There are one or two exceptions when we expect all weekly boarders to stay in the House: for example when we take the boys on various group activities and (for those involved in the Christmas play) the last weekend of the Autumn Term. Full boarders can go home or visit friends at weekends other than Exeats from time to time if parental permission is given in writing by the preceding Thursday evening. If the boy is going elsewhere other than home, we expect the host family to contact us in writing as well. Permission is rarely refused for any reasonable request. Parents and Guardians are very welcome to call in when they collect or return their son to the House, should time permit. We would be delighted for Parents and Guardians to join the House for the Sunday services in Chapel, particularly on the Sunday in each term which is designated Pemberley Sunday, when Pemberley House provides readers in Chapel and then offers refreshments back in the House an excellent opportunity to meet the Head Master and members of the House Tutor Team.

Accounts & Disbursements Termly accounts are issued by the Harpur Trust. They include tuition and boarding fees plus the various disbursement amounts. Disbursements (blue bills) represent spending over and above the boarding fee, and are placed on the termly accounts within various categories, including the following: School Shop: We operate a chit system with the School shop that allows boys to buy any items of uniform, games kit or stationery stocked by the shop. We order spare name tags from the shop, so we can keep a spare stock in the Surgery. Boys are always asked if they have their parents permission to buy expensive items. The shop provides each boy with an itemised statement at the end of term Dry Cleaning: We can arrange for blazers and suits to be professionally dry-cleaned over the holidays and charged to you via the blue bill House Trips: We organise recreational trips from time to time for members of the House. The cost of these trips are added to the disbursements bill Spending Money: The boys may need money to pay for School outings or events. This is added to the disbursements bill.

Near the end of term, the disbursement total is given to the Harpur Trust Office and this figure is added in with the rest of the fees. I will provide you with an itemised statement of charges which I have added. If you are ever unsure about any item, please get in touch with us. Insurance The School has a group insurance scheme covering boys personal property in the House. The total sum insured is 4,000, with a single item limit of 2,000. The policy excess is 25. Items are replaced on a new for old basis if they are less than one year old. Bicycles are covered up to 250 if they are kept securely in the Bicycle Shed; regrettably mobile telephones are not covered under this policy. Private Healthcare Insurance - Arrangements have been made through Simplyhealth to provide private healthcare insurance for boarding pupils, if required. Parents wishing to take this up are required to opt in by contacting the Bursary by email for further information at: rtfifha@bedfordschool.org.uk

Electrical Items All electrical products must conform to UK safety standards. Parents are asked to ensure that all electrical equipment is safe. The House has an annual electrical safety check and any items that do not meet these standards are removed. Two pin and three pin adapters are not allowed, owing to the danger of overloading the electrical sockets: only strip style adapters which conform to UK safety standards can be used. We can provide these and blue bill parents if required. Owing to limitations on the electrical supply, boys are not allowed to bring items such as PCs, televisions, videos, DVD players, fridges and cooking appliances (including kettles), etc. The House provides these items for communal use. End of Term The House is closed during the School holidays. Boys should leave the House before 6pm on the last day of term. The only exception to this rule is for Upper Sixth boys who are attending both the Leavers Ball and the Leavers Service at the end of the Summer Term. They may stay in the House for one extra night. Boys do not have to take their belongings home at the end of the Autumn and Spring Terms. However, at the end of the Summer term, they may only leave small quantities of personal belongings here if they are boxed up and labelled and put into an area designated by the Houseparents. Exeats & Half Terms The House is closed over Exeats and Half Terms and boys must leave the House before 6pm on the last day of School, and return between 6pm and 9pm on the last day of the holiday. The House is locked between these times and the Houseparents may be away. We assume that boys spend Half Terms and Exeats with their Parents or Guardians and expect written notification from Parents/Guardians of any other arrangements. It is essential that all overseas boys have a Guardian who is based locally. Fire Drill We hold practice fire evacuations at least once a term, test the emergency lighting system monthly and fire detection system weekly.

20

House Inspection We inspect the House regularly and it is expected that all rooms are kept tidy, clothes are put away neatly and beds are made. Weekly boarders are expected to tidy their areas before leaving the House on Saturday. Out of Bounds The attics, boiler rooms, and all roof areas are out of bounds. Parents/Guardians who are away from home during term time If Parents/Guardians intend to be away from home, either on holiday or business, during term time, we ask for a contact number and address for use in case of emergency. Passports and Tickets Although some older boys prefer to keep their own tickets and passports, we ask all boys who have return air tickets and passports to give them to us at the start of term and we safeguard these in the House safe. We return them to the boys at the end of term. School Policies Pemberley House follows the Schools major policies which can be found on the intranet. Please follow this link: School Policies >> Study Leave during Public Examinations Study Leave is not free time; it is important that boys use their time productively to prepare for examinations. During periods when boys are on Study Leave, the following rules apply: All boys must be bathed or showered by 9.15 am to allow the cleaning staff to clean the shower and bathroom areas each day Boys on Study Leave follow the following timetable: 9.30am 10.45am Revision 10.45am 11.15am Break 11.15am 12.30pm Revision 12.30pm 2.15pm Lunch 2.15pm 4.00pm Revision Prep takes place as usual between 6.45pm and 9.00pm Boys may not watch TV or be in the Games Room during Revision sessions Boys may listen to music, but only through headphones No games of any kind are allowed during Revision sessions

21

Study Periods Fourths, Removes and Fifth Formers may take their study periods in the School Library, if a specific classroom is not specified on their timetable. Sixth Form boys are allowed back in the House to study, but only when they have a double study period or if their single study period is the last scheduled lesson of the school day. They can of course study at School if they wish. Each time Sixth Formers return to the House, they are expected to inform the Matron on duty of their presence and should study quietly in their own room. Visitors to the House are not allowed during these study periods.
