LEADERSHIP TRAINING MODULE

PART 1 DISCOVERING THE LEADER IN YOU Henry L. Aonuevo Jr.

To be an effective leader, you need to gain an understanding of who you are first. Leadership is basically extending our personality and life skills to others. So to become an effective leader, knowledge of ones thoughts, skills, strengths and weakness is imperative. In this part of the training, certain personality principles will be discussed in order to motivate each of you to dig deeper into who you are and what you can do so you can build people and produce better results and become a better leader. Session Objectives: Quotes What do self-awareness, self-image and self-esteem mean? How do we relate these terms to successful leadership? Play a related video at the beginning, in the middle and at the end. Administer a self-concept assessment test.

SESSION CONTENT: Introduction: Ask selected student-leaders these questions: o What three adjectives would you use to describe yourself? o What is your best asset as a person/leader? o What has been your best achievement in life so far? o What do you feel when others say something that youre not? o What are your weaknesses/strengths?

The task of leading others is as important as leading yourself. The better you know yourself, the more capable youll become of leading others. If you have lesser knowledge of who you are and what you can do, the possibilities are endless. Many aspects of your life can surely be affected by not knowing yourself and your abilities because leadership is you extending yourself-your beliefs, your ideas, your character and values-, to other people, those that you lead. Lecture: Here are important things you need to know and develop to be able to lead others effectively. Remember, Selfleadership is effective leadership.

A. A LEADER KNOWS HIMSELF (SELF-AWARENESS)

Self Awareness is having a clear perception of your personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions. Self Awareness allows you to understand other people, how they perceive you, your attitude and your responses to them in the moment. When you are self-aware, your leadership will be more effective because your visions, goals and decisions will be clearer. As a leader, it is important for you to be aware of yourself so that you would be able to understand those who follow you better.

When you are self-aware, you will be able to know what things about you and/or the group that you lead need changing or improvements. Knowing yourself is a prerequisite to a good self-image.

B. A LEADER ACCEPTS HIMSELF (SELF-IMAGE)

Self-image is how one perceives himself, positively or negatively. Self-image is important because how one feels and thinks about himself affects the way he acts.

Faulty Basis for Self-Image

Physique: Physical appearance cannot be a strong foundation for self-image because we age. Performance: Performance is undependable in that our performance can deteriorate. Possessions: Possessions is another shaky foundation for self-image because in an economic downturn, we may have to give up some of our possessions. Our possessions are not permanent ... they can be stolen or destroyed

As a leader, you need to develop a healthy self-image. As mentioned earlier, leadership involves sharing and extending yourself to the people you lead. So, how can you lead well and build up others if you yourself need a lot of building up?

Advantages of a good Self-image. A good leader to others Doesnt submit to peer pressure Is not a threat to others and cannot be threatened by others Believes in self and makes life successful Willing to experiment and try things Easier to make friends and have more meaningful relationships Know how to appreciate and look at life positively, not why me Failure is not devastating Can look at bad points and change them

C. A LEADER LOOKS UP TO HIMSELF (SELF-ESTEEM)

Self-esteem refers to the way we see and think about ourselves. Your self-esteem is made up of all the experiences and interpersonal relationships youve had in your life. Everyone youve ever met has added to or taken away from how you see yourself! Its your general positive or negative self-evaluation. Its the feeling you have about yourself.

Types of Self-Esteem High Self Esteem: People with high self-esteem possess the following characteristics: They like to meet new people. They dont worry about how others will judge them. They have the courage to express themselves. Their lives are enriched with each new encounter. They are nicer to be around. Their ideas are met with interest because others want to hear what they have to say.

They are magnets to positive opportunities! People with high self-esteem have an I think I can attitude!

Low Self Esteem: People with low self-esteem possess the following characteristics: They dont believe in themselves. They see themselves failing before they begin. They have a hard time forgiving their mistakes and make themselves pay the price forever. They believe they can never be as good as they should be or as others. They are afraid to show their creativity because they will be ridiculed. They are dissatisfied with their lives. They spend most of their time alone. They complain and criticize. They worry about everything and do nothing. People with low self-esteem have an I cant do it attitude. 12 Steps to High Self-Esteem Step 1: Forgive yourself for past mistakes. Step 2: Focus on your positive attributes. Step 3: Follow the example of successful people. Step 4: Become a self talker. Step 5: Exhibit a good attitude. Step 6: Get plenty of rest. Step 7: Make your work skills your own. Step 8: Practice your talents. Step 9: Become physically fit. Step 10: Learn new things. Step 11: Improve your personal relationships. Step 12: Dress well! Wrap-Up: As a leader, you need to know yourself. Be self-aware of your own ideas, likes, dislikes, emotions, thoughts, strengths and weaknesses. As a leader, after knowing yourself, you must develop a healthy self-image which can help you improve your self-esteem. As a leader, a positive or high self-esteem is necessary to lead people or groups well. It is difficult to solve problems, build up or motivate people if you are having troubles with who you are and how you feel about yourself. Know yourself, Develop a healthy self-image and boost your self esteem so that you will have a better self-concept. Remember, as a leader, you develop and lead yourself first before others.
