Alley Riding in the historic neighborhoods of Coldwater

I very much enjoy riding my
bike in the alleys of the older,
historical areas of Coldwater.
Possibly the young people living
in the newer sections of our village
may not know the original purpose
of an alley. An alley is described
at dictionary.com- as a narrow
street or passageway between or
behind city buildings, permitting
access to backyards, garages,
garbage pickup, etc. Coldwater
alleys comprise the center of town
with most running east and west
starting with Main Street. The
newer homes in the far East and
North West do not have alleys.
The village does a first-rate job
maintaining the alleys.
My intended purpose for alley
riding is to view the vicinity
looking at landscaping, trees,
gardens and the general goodness
of backyards. Some are boring,
utilitarian, or unexciting. Some
make me smile, and others leave
me feeling envious and green-
eyed. The plan is to share pictures
of alleys that catch my eye and
fancy with our readers.

Camping can be a relaxing,
family friendly adventure. We
recently sold our fold-down
camper, which brought back sweet
memories. I thought I would see
how families are packing, setting
up and enjoying the great outdoors
now.
State campgrounds and the
KOA sites are popular and almost
always well maintained. There
still seems to be a good mixture
of fold-downs and travel trailers
at all facilities. And as far as
popular goes, if you want to stay
at Yogi Bears Jellystone Camp
Resort near Fremont, Indiana,
book extremely early. Most
weekends were filled already in
February. But considering the
place has an indoor pool, game
room, mini-golf, boat rentals plus
dozens of other amenities along
with an award winning recreation
program, its understandable. This
is a vacation destination in itself.
As with many campgrounds now,
you dont need to leave to have
a full range of activities. Even
many of the smaller privately
owned properties have bingo,
hiking trails, playgrounds and
family movie nights. Bringing
along cards, sparklers, balls, board
and other favorite games can make
the experience as much fun as a
barrel of monkeys. One location
even has a priest come in to say
mass on Saturday evenings for the
convenience of the campers.
Rain does not spoil the fun, as
there is always the diversion of
shadow puppets on the wall, going
into town for a movie or another

10:00 a.m. at the Coldwater united
Methodist Church with Rev. Allen

Michael J. Zahn, 57, of Aurora,
Colorado, passed away at
Presbyterian St. Lukes hospital,
Denver, Colorado on July 4th. he
was born October 8, 1954 at Our
Lady of Mercy hospital to Marcellus
(Mike) and Mabel (Klosterman)
Zahn. he married Debra Calkins of
Aurora, CO., on January 21, 1989,
who survives. Mike graduated
from Ft. Loramie high School
1973, and was self employed in
Aurora. Mike loved to BBQ and was
a Coldwater Cavalier fan. Services
are being handled by Newcomers
Mortuary of Aurora, with 10 am
Mass on July 13, 2012 at Queen of
Peace Catholic Church, Aurora, CO.

Like the old saying; You
never miss the water until the
well goes dry. Well, I think
that applies to electricity also. It
sure was hard to find something
to do when the power went
off the other day. I thought I
would just read some and see if
I could finish this great book I
am reading. But I couldnt find
enough light to read by. And
then I thought why not watch
some old movies on tape since
the TV was off. That shows you
just how hard I was thinking
doesnt it? It never ceases to
amaze me just how much we get
used to having all the wonderful
conveniences we have. Then we
take them for granted. I guess
we will never learn.
With all the damage from the
high winds the town crew has
been busy for sometime in the
park here in Coldwater. We lost
several trees but it looked like
most of them needed to be cut
down. You could see how most
were hollow inside and needed
to be cut down in the near future.
Lots of homes lost shingles and
some had damage from falling
tress hitting the house. A lot of
roofers will be busy in the very
near future. The only really good
thing was we did get some rain
out of all the wind and damage
that occurred. The corn really
needs more rain if the farmers
are to have any corn at all. Lets
hope we get more soon.

Supreme Court decision on
OBAMACARE sit with you?
I think we may be in for lots of
trouble before it is all over with.
One thing for sure it will end
up costing all a lot of money.
Didnt we have a war with
England about taxes without
representation? Seems like we
are going to be taxed without as
much a whimper coming from
the taxpayers. I guess we will
just have to wait and see.

The Coldwater Emergency Medical
Services (EMS) was to hold an Open
house at their Squad house across
from the Library on July 13 to show the
community what they do and to recruit
new members.
The Fort Recovery FFA Poultry
Judging Team recently placed fourth of
46 teams at the State Poultry Judging
Contest. Team members were Matt
Barman, Matt Fortkamp, Rich Grisez
and Craig Link.
25 YEARS AGO (1987)
Cooper Farms had the official ground
breaking for their $7-million turkey
processing and deboning plant on the
East edge of St. henry on July 16, 1987.
Severe thunderstorms and high winds
overturned some 25 campers at Kozy
Campground near Montezuma Sunday
evening and another storm Saturday did
extensive damage in the Rockford area.
50 YEARS AGO (1962)
Coldwater Village Council announced
that the county Commissioners have
approved the annexation of 32.87 acres
of land on the southwest corner of the
Rosenbeck farm on the east edge of
town.

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of
earnings potential and a variety of investment options so its a great tool
for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used
properly to get the best results. Thats why you should review your 401(k) at
least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.
Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help
from your plan provider. But if that assistance isnt available, you might want to
consult with a financial professional to make sure youre getting the maximum
benefit from your plan.
As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably
be this:
How much should I contribute? At the very least, try to put in enough to
receive your employers matching contribution, if one is offered. If you dont
earn this match, you are essentially walking away from free money. Beyond
this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other
retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if youre eligible,
you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth
potential, provided youve had your account for five years and dont start
taking withdrawals until youre 59.
Of course, its not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines
its success its also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars.
(Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect
against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices,
such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right
investment mix, youll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:
Your age Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more
aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because
youll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down
periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat
more conservatively, but youll still need some growth potential in your 401(k)
portfolio.
Your goals Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might
want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to
work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and
pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income
needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your
401(k).
Your other retirement income sources If you have a variety of
retirement income sources a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse
with generous retirement benefits you may need to invest differently,
perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement
income.
Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and
choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out
of your plan? Heres a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and
acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You
might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly,
youll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment
approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate
retirement goals.
As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many
ways so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)s performance.

This week, Major League Baseballs All-Star Game is scheduled to be played in Kansas City.
Whether youre rooting for the American or National League, youll no doubt admire the ability and
athleticism exhibited by these tremendous ballplayers. Of course, any all-star team is made up of
players who bring different talents to the game. And this same approach of combining a collection of
skills toward one common effort can be found in other endeavors, one of which is investing.
Here, then, is one possible lineup of investment moves to consider:
* Diversify. All investments have both benefts and risks. As an investor, your goal is to help
maximize the benefts and minimize the risks and one of the best ways to do this is by diversifying
your money across a range of assets. Diversifying can help you reduce the impact of market volatility
that might affect your portfolio if all your money was tied up in one particular asset class, and that asset
went through a down period. Keep in mind, though, that diversifcation, by itself, cannot guarantee
profts or protect against loss.
* Rebalance. Even without your taking signifcant actions, your portfolio can evolve in ways that
may not be to your liking. For example, if some of your more aggressive investments appreciate greatly,
they may eventually constitute a larger percentage of your holdings than you had planned and in
doing so, elevate your overall risk level. To prevent this from happening, you should meet with your
fnancial advisor periodically to rebalance your portfolio.
* Seek quality. Many people latch onto hot investments, only to be disappointed when they cool
off. Instead seek quality vehicles the ones that generally lose the least ground when the market is
down and recover more quickly when the market rallies. When you invest in stocks, for instance, look
for those companies that have strong management teams, competitive products and good business
models. When you purchase bonds, look for those with high ratings from the independent rating
agencies.
* Stay invested. Its tempting to take a breather from investing when the fnancial markets are
volatile. But if you stay on the investment sidelines, you may miss out on the beginning of the next
market rally. If youve built a diversifed portfolio of quality vehicles, it may be easier to stay invested.
* Know your risk tolerance. If you fnd yourself constantly fretting about the markets ups and
downs, to the extent that your worries are affecting the quality of your life, you may have a portfolio thats
unsuited to your risk tolerance. Conversely, if youre dissatisfed with the growth of your investments,
you may be investing too cautiously, which could be a concern when youre striving to reach long-term
goals, such as a comfortable retirement. Ultimately, theres no one right way for everyone to invest, but
you do need to match your portfolios composition with your individual risk tolerance and time horizon.

Exercising Your Pet
Last week, I discussed the growing trend of pet obesity. Obesity leads to many health issues for the pet
and greater expense to the pet owner. Exercising your pet not only helps keep the weight off, but is also good for
balancing the major chemicals in the brain. The three major chemicals in the brain are norepinephrine, dopamine,
serotonin levels. These chemicals are responsible for mood. Unbalanced they can create emotional issues, such as
depression or anxiety. Awell-exercised pet tends to not be so wired indoors. They are also less prone to chewing,
barking, and other troublesome behaviors.
When exercising your pet there are many things to take into consideration:
If your pet is already out-of-shape, only exercise for a few minutes each session. Increasing a few minutes
each week. Work toward a minimum of 15 to 20 minutes of daily exercise. Ideally you want to exercise your pet 20
to 30 minutes daily.
Dont be a weekend warrior. Exercising a pet very heavily on Saturday or Sunday after none during the week
can aggravate issues and cause joint injuries or sore muscles.
Watch for signs of fatigue. Watch for extreme panting, dilated pupils, or ears back from face.
For pets with health conditions (asthma, breathing problems in snub-nosed breeds, heart murmurs), check with
your vet before exercising. Take it easy while exercising them. Stop if their breathing becomes raspy or labored.
Dont skip the cats. They need 20 to 30 minutes of daily exercise, too!
Dont use a retractable leash. If it does not retract quickly enough, it may become tangled in bikes, strollers,
or other dogs.
Dont tie your pet to your bike. Even if your leash does not get snagged, you need to remember that your pet
will tire before you do.
Ways to exercise your pet:
It is great to let your dog walk or run on packed wet sand. It is easier on the joints which will cause fewer
injuries than dry sand.
For active or young dogs, throw a ball up short fights of steps. This is a great cardio workout and can be
done in inclimate weather.
For cats, throw their favorite catnip toy or bell ball up the stairs.
Throw their favorite toy down a hallway for your pet to chase or play keep away with the toy with someone
while your pet tries to intercept it.
Use a small laser pointer and have them chase the dot.
Buy dangling feather toys and dangle them at your cat to chase.
If your cat is hard to motivate, place their food dish where they have to jump up to get it. You can also move
their litter box to a different level of the house so they have to climb the stairs.
Swimming is great exercise. Be sure to choose a clean body of water with an easy in and out.
When walking, jogging, or running, remember to keep your pets size in mind. Try to do 20-30 minutes but

Sister Carolyn hoying, a native
of Egypt who grew up in St. Joseph
Parish, is one of four Sisters of the
Precious Blood celebrating their
50
th
anniversary of religious life.
In addition, two sisters are
celebrating their 75
th
anniversary
of entrance to the community.
The congregation recognized
the jubiliarians with a special
tribute this summer and individual
celebrations at the sisters home
parishes and places of ministry will
occur throughout the year.
Sister Carolyn spent 37 years
as an elementary school teacher or
principal as principal at St. John
The Evangelist Catholic School
from 1986-2002, highlighting
a 37-year career in elementary
education. In 2007, the schools
newly constructed gymnasium
was named after Sister Carolyn
in recognition of her service to
the school. She also served as a
principal or teacher at elementary
schools in Ohio and Virginia.
She returned to Ohio and served
as the coordinator of vocations
ministry for the Sisters of the
Precious Blood from 2003-11.
She recently spent five weeks in
Guatemala working with young
Mayan women.
A native of Egypt, Ohio, Sister
Carolyn entered the Sisters of the
Precious Blood on Jan. 6, 1962.
She has 10 living siblings, and is
one of seven cousins and a nephew
who entered religious life. Sister
Carolyn lives in Dayton.
A Mass and open house to
celebrate the golden jubilee of
Precious Blood Sister Carolyn
hoying will be held Aug. 5 at St.
Michaels Church in Fort Loramie.
Mass begins at 11 a.m. with a
reception following. An open house
will be held from 2-4 p.m. The
church is located at 33 Elm St. in
Fort Loramie.

The St. Marys Tri-Squares, a
western square dance club, held a
monthly dance on Saturday, June
23, at the Zion Lutheran Church
in St. Marys. Fifty-four dancers
enjoyed listening and dancing to
square dance caller Ed heuker and
round dance cuer Elaine Wintrow.

visiting clubs. Banners were re-

Beach House Memories

Olivia Rutledge loved the sea
turtles that came to the Isles of
Palms. Every summer she watched
in awe as the females labored onto
the beaches to lay their
eggs and then carried
their tired bodies back
to the sea. She had
kept a journal of those
activities since she
was a teenager. When
she was in her thirties,
a large development
company had purchased
a section of the island
and the sea turtles
habitat was in jeopardy.
Since the beach house
had belonged to her parents
since before she was born, this
potential change also threatened
her livelihood. When she married
into the respected, well-to do
Rutledge family, Primrose Cottage
was part of what she brought to
the marriage. The little seaside
cottage was the one thing that was
kept in her name, something that
she refused to let her husband sell.
Every year she and her children
would spend the summer there. It
was a nice respite to get away from
Charleston and the responsibilities
of her position. And since her
overbearing husband stayed in
town, that was an added bonus. In
the summer of 1974, a study was
funded to follow the nesting habits
of the sea turtles. Thats when
Lovie met Dr. Russell Bennett,
a biologist hired to conduct the
research program. At first they
clashed. Opinions, expectations,
and past experience told Lovie that
this professional would brush her
off like everyone else had. They
considered the Turtle Lady an
uneducated housewife who was
just keeping herself occupied
while away from her social
life. No one had taken her work
seriously. After a few encounters,
Russell discovered that Lovie
did in fact have the tenacity of a
scientist and kept accurate, precise
notes over the years. She even
had those dating back from her
fathers journals. Working closely
together they found they had a lot
in commonand more than just
the loggerheads.
The story progresses and a love
affair develops. All of this is told
from Lovies past recollections. As
the book begins, it is the
present time and she is
sitting on the front porch
of her beloved Primrose
Cottage, looking out to
sea. The story is a bit
slow getting started,
but I would advise the
reader to stay with it.
There are a few twists
and turns in the end that
make it a worthwhile
read. Southern ladies
were expected to act
and react in certain ways. This
novel touches on the reality that
things can look beautiful from the
outside, but be totally different
behind closed doors. Mistakes and
choices made have lasting effects.
Mary Alice Monroe does a good
job of taking the reader back with
the memories. Most of the novel
occurs as Lovies reminiscences of
1974. But the last chapter brings
us back to the present, where she
is still searching for the happy
ending she has desired for so many
years. You can find Beach House

Miranda Michelle Kunk was
recently crowned Queen of
the 2012 Nacogdoches (Texas)
heritage Festival. Queen
Miranda was also recently
named the Texas Association of
Private and Parochial Schools
Female Fine Arts Student of
the Year. Miranda will be a
senior at Regents Academy of
Nacogdoches next year and after
graduating, she plans to attend
Belhaven university in Jackson,
MS to double major in Violin
Performance and International
Studies. Miranda is the daughter
of 1980 Coldwater graduate
Michael Kunk and is the
granddaughter of the late LaVern
and Rita Kunk. Miranda resides
in Nacogdoches, TX with her
parents, Michael and Francesca,
and sister, Kelsey.

Nuclear Medicine Technologist
at Good Samaritan hospital,
Dayton.
The prospective groom is a
2007 graduate of Fort Recov-
ery high School. he graduated
from The university of Cincin-
nati with a bachelors degree in
marketing and is a marketing
coordinator at Cincy Magazine.
The couple is planning a
August 25, 2012, wedding at
St. Peter Catholic Church, Fort
Recovery.

Years ago, a Septuagenarian told
me that this Club house was used
by the guys to play cards and to
spend a social time together. In the
background of the park, tents are set
up, for the summer recreation for
families at the Lake.
Mercelina Park is located south
of Market Street, going south on
Buckeye Street, and east of Warren
and Logan Streets.
This land is the old site of the
original Mercer County Fairground.
In February 1872, the Agricultural
Society purchased the tract of land
of 17 or 18 acres, by the Reservoir,
Lake Mercer as it was called at that
time, from the State of Ohio. The
Mercer County Agricultural Society
was organized in 1847 and the first
Fair was held on October 28, 1852.
November 2, 1893, the Mercer
County Agricultural Society
purchased 18 acres of land from
John W. DeFord for $2700, which
is the site of the Mercer County
Fairground on West Market Street,
Celina, today. The first Fair was held
on this land, August 21-24 in 1894.
The last evidence of the Mercer
County Fairground at the old site on
Lake Mercer, was the destruction of
the Grand Stand by fire in March
1896. That Grand Stand had been
constructed in 1882.
The history of the Mercer County
Fair, can be found in the book,
The Mercer County Fair, Celina,
Ohio, 1852-2002, edited by Fran
Guilbault, Member of the Mercer
County historical Society, and former
American history Teacher, at St.
henry Schools. Michael Niekamp,
Mercer County Fair Board Chairman
had requested that the Mercer County
historical Society write a book for
the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Fair
for 2002.
After the Mercer County Fair
Ground was moved to its present site
on Market Street in 1894, the old Fair
Ground land on the Lake was used
as Celina Park, on the 1900 Plat
Map. Eventually, the land became
Mercelina Park. Mercelina hotel
was a major tourist attraction on the
Lake. As for the Phi Delta Kappa
Club house at Mercelina Park, I
can only ask those former Phi Delta
Kappa Club Members and friends, to
share the history of that Club house
with the Mercer County historical
Society. Preservation of Local
history is a long term project!

Celina Couple Receives Albert Heckler
Award from Cheryl Ann Programs
Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that theyd be-
come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.
They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celina
home. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door,
and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were a
typical family.
Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,
Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. With
that bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs lives changed forever.
The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,
but the Hoyngs couldnt afford to spend much time thinking
about their terrible luck. They had a son who needed them
more than he ever had. The first years after Brians accident,
which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult,
they said, as they searched for someone who could help them
help Brian.
Their school district helped as much as it could.Finally, then-
Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngs
knew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.
Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,
Louie Hoyng said. It gave Brian his life back.
The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everyday
life. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made new
friends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,
up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.
When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he would
just smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knew
how to make him laugh, Dorothy Hoyng said.
It wasnt long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-
pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.
Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the unique
equipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said Superintendent
Mike Overman, Louie would forget to send us a bill. He
also served a term on the county MRDD board and was the
board president.
For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf of
their son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at
the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is given
each year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service and
advocacy.
The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rate
advocates for their son, Overman said. They rarely ever
missed a day spending time with him, and they always spoke
up to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-
cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-
gram.
Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In the
years after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot about
patience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced the
Hoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outsidebut it
was a world where they found welcome and acceptance.
We met some wonderful people during our years at Cheryl
Ann, Dorothy Hoyng said. They worked their hearts out
helping us with Brian.

Stateline Writers Meet
At the April meeting of the Stateline Writers Club, members read
profiles they had written about someone, living or dead or make-
believe, and member Eileen Whitsetts special activity of having mem-
bers combine pictures of particular scenes with a person or people
assigned to them to put into that scene brought interesting results.
Sue Miller and Gretchen Bollenbachers proposal for a special
meeting designed to attract new members was described and approved.
Members will be hosted by the Coldwater Public Library in June for
a reading of their best work.
At the next meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16, mem-
bers will rehearse for their special program in June.
Stateline club members meet the 3rd Saturday of each month at
10 a.m. at the Celina Mercer County Library. Anyone interested in
coming to a meeting or becoming a member is cordially invited to
attend.
Celina Rotary Dog Park Dedicated

Opening day at the Celina Rotary Dog Park received
rave revues from the dogs. As the gates opened for the first
time on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-
ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3
acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced in
area. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs have
over 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest and
biggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-
try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,
Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is also
working on getting a State Dog Park in her home town of
St. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteers
worked many hours with the help of the State and Craig
Morton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.
Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-
ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of West
Bank Road
Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of the
Celina Rotary Clubs major donation and businesses as well
as individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-
tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.
At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of the
people who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, Past
Rotary President and Celina City Council Member spoke
as his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out the
park. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor of
the recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for several
days. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park Gand
Lake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of the
Division of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-
tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wise
lessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few of
which were: Never leave home without your leach and
your ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will get
what you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not a
real kiss.
One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-
cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,
professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs at
home but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-
mented that this was the first time his dog had this much
exercise since he got him a year ago.
There are a few small problems to work out with the
park, such as the water faucet would not shut off and there
was a small hole under the fence in the small dog side of
the park, which of course was found by one of the little
furry visitors on dedication day. These problems will be
easily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends are
being sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use of
the park is free to the public. One of the additions they
would like to have is benches added to the park for the
comfort of the owners.
The green stations placed around the fence for the dog
wastes were given at a discount by Florida based company
named DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-
ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to help
by giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-
biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Gary
flew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting and
opening of the park. More of their products can be found

If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that are
posted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide such
as:
Dogs should have their current shots
The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep
dogs in their own spaces.
Dont leave dog unattended
Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior
Keep small children under close supervision
Clean up after your own dog
Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness.
These are just a few precautions to remember. Check
the rules before entering the park and you and your dog
will have a great time The Park is open daylight to dark
everyday.

Ft. Recovery, Oh Thirty-

chaperones, and two advisors of
the Ft. Recovery FFA Chapter
recently attended the 84
th
State
FFA Convention in Columbus,
Ohio. Over 6,200 members
representing 320 FFA Chapters
across the state of Ohio were in
attendance at the convention.
The two-day trip was packed
with convention sessions, skills
contests, educational tours, and
good fun. During the convention
sessions, members heard from
keynote speakers Brook Gibbs,
Jon Petz and Gus Gustafson, as
well as state and national officers
and other supporters of agricultural
education and the FFA. Between
convention sessions, members
could participate in a career show
that featured nearly 50 exhibitors
from agriculture, business, and
education. Members participated
in the following skills contests:
Agricultural Engineering and
Poultry Judging.
The Ft. Recovery FFA Chapter
was fortunate to receive many
awards for the great success
this past year at the State FFA
Convention. Nine members
including Zach Bergman, Eric
Brackman, Keith Fortkamp,
Logan Jutte, Andrea Lennartz,
Gusty Link, Rachel Rammel, Jake
Vogel and Karissa Will, received
the prestigious State FFA Degree,
a degree received by only 2% of
Ohios 23,000 members each year.

I have always believed
the regular season of Acme
baseball to be somewhat
similar to summer basketball
open gyms. Acme ball starts
immediately after the regular
high school season. The seniors
are gone and coaches should be
giving numerous players the
opportunity to fill the vacant
spots. Family vacations and
camps for football and basketball
are known to decimate the ranks
at times. Acme tournament
play is a different situation.
Rosters and playing times are
stabilized and everyone is now
playing for keeps. The double
elimination tournament format
is also far superior to the single
loss and youre gone. The kids
seem to be a little more relaxed
knowing one defeat will not
send them home. The cream
will ultimately come to the top
when more games are played.
Baseball is a game meant for
warm, actually hot weather.
Pitchers and all players in the
field stay loose. hitters have
seen live pitching for months
and provide a better challenge
for the pitcher. Acme baseball
tournament is played under far
superior weather conditions,
with better trained athletes,
and a better format than the
high school spring tournament.
It is also a more economical
alternative to the pro game.
A Floridian once explained it
this way; You folks up north
spend all that money on heating
bills and stay inside during
the winter months. We spend
money on air conditioning and
stay inside during the summer.
I have never experienced
Florida weather in July, but
I have to believe it could not
be much nicer than what
we had around here last week.
I am not a good man at just
hunkering down. After about
a half day inside, I feel the urge
to just get outside to check
out any blizzard, flooding,
or wind condition. This is a
poor attitude for Alaskans in
January and submariners all
the time. Our thermometer
showed triple figures shortly
after noon when I announced
I was going to mow the front
field. The Bride gave me a
quizzical look, but knew I was
in my antsy frame of mind.
There really was not much
grass to mow, but the dormant
stuff at least allowed my tractor
tires to make visible marks
and I knew were to go when
the weeds were sparse. The
mowing process was actually
more relaxing than usual as I
could increase my speed and
not worry if I actually covered
all the turf. I gave some thought
to the lack of respect we give
to weeds. Our planted crops,
flowers, and vegetables are
wilting or dying without water,
but my weeds are thriving and
I was mowing them down. We
give these plants no respect.
We spray them, hack at them,
or pull them by the throat. Just
maybe we should join them if
we cannot beat them. They can
grow with minimal water or too
much of it, with excessive heat
or lack thereof, and they learn
how to resist our chemicals. Do
we know exactly how they do
that? I almost felt guilty cutting
off the only green things I found
in my lawn, but I did it anyway
because that is what we do in
farm country in the Midwest.

Mercer health Lake Festival
5K Run registrations are now being
taken at the Celina-Mercer County
Chamber of Commerce. This 5K
run is scheduled for Saturday, July 28
beginning in Lakeshore Park in Celina
at 8:00am sharp. A beautiful out and
bank course along West Bank Road,
this is a certified course. Deadline to
pre-register without a t-shirt is July

and it is $11. Pre-registration
with a shirt is $20 and July 10

the deadline. These are running tech

Dear Editor,

I have procrastinated in my duty to speak out, but I can
procrastinate no longer. The issue that I need to address is that of
religious freedom. If you recall from history, the Pilgrims came to
this new world in search of religious freedom and now our trusted
leader wants to take some of this freedom away from us. having just
celebrated the 236
th
anniversary of our nation, let us not forget the
words of the Declaration of Independence, We hold these truths to
be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed
by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these
are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these
rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just
powers from the consent of the governed. That underlined part is
what I want you to focus onthe government gets its power from
the people. This nation is a democracy not a dictatorship. We elect
our leaders to do our willthe will of the people. Our current leaders
were not put into office to run this country according to their own
agenda.
The ruling by this administration demands that non-profit religious
employers such as Catholic schools, hospitals, and charities must
provide employees with coverage for contraceptives. This is in direct
opposition of the truths that Catholics and many Christians hold to
be self-evident. I know what some of you are thinking, Oh, this is
a Catholic thing. But this is not a Catholic thing; it is an issue
addressing the right of any religious institution to say this is what we
believe in and we have the right to live our faith in such a manner.
We have a right as Catholicsno as Americans to live according
to our religious beliefs and this administration is demanding the
institutions associated with certain non-profit religious employers
(aka the Catholic Church) to implement policies that are in direct
violation of church teachings.
This administration is giving non-profit religious employers a
year to comply. I guess our trusted leader thinks that the election
will be over with by then and people will forget about this issue, but I
am begging you, please do not let this be swept under the rug. Please
do not be complacent. Please do something to stop this atrocity from
happening. If people just stand by and do nothing and this goes into
effect what will be the next right that is taken from the American
people?
I cannot help but think of the words of Martin Niemller who
tried to warn people against hitlers activities:
First they came for the communists,
and I didnt speak out because I wasnt a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didnt speak out because I wasnt a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didnt speak out because I wasnt a Jew.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
So, please speak out before it is too late. Let your voice be heard
do something. Pray, pray, pray that this will not happen in a country
that has its very origins rooted in religious freedom. Pray that we can
continue to enjoy our religious freedom that we as Americans hold
to be self- evident.

indoor activity such as a museum
to keep spirits high. Choosing
the destination and camping
makes a vacation possible for
many families. With the price of
admission tickets to parks and
attractions running in the hundreds
of dollars, spending the nights at
a campground instead of a hotel
can make these outings affordable.
Being able to cook meals instead
of eating out also saves money.
And cooking over an open fire
is possibly the best part of the
camping adventure. Pizzas in pie
irons, smores, burgers and crispy
burnt hot dogs are the favorite
foods. Most breakfasts are simple
with cereal or a special treat of
mini-muffins with chocolate
chips.
I spoke with the Bertke family
of Coldwater who go out about
two to three times a year, although
they wish it could be more often.
Many of the state parks arent too
busy, so a Friday through Sunday
weekend is still possible. At their
house, everyone is responsible for
packing their clothing and personal
items. But the kids look out for one
another and bring along the toy or
item they think a sibling may have
forgot. Swimsuits and sweatshirts
are necessities, as the weather can
change from one extreme to the
other. Summer is undoubtedly
the busiest time for our local
campers, but fall brings its own
set of beauty and awe. Waking in
the midst of peaceful serenity with
a chill in the air attunes all of the
senses to Mother Nature. With a
group or family only, camping is a
wonderful way to share the good,
and sometimes not so good, times
together. Either way, its what
memories are made of. It was a lot
of work to pack the food, clothing,
bedding and gear for a family
weekend trip. But looking back,
I am so glad that I agreed to this
activity. Experiencing the outdoors
with my children and friends was
something that I would never trade
for all the comfy bedding in the
Ritz Carlton.
