nano3G: Access Controller

Overview
The nano3G Access Controller (AC) (3GPP HNB-GW) is a component of a simple, powerful solution enabling mobile network operators to address the challenge of getting 3G into hardto-reach places. The system generates a high quality 3G signal inside buildings and uses broadband IP backhaul for rapid deployment and low-cost operation. The nano3G system is typically used to provide coverage and capacity for offices, shops and other indoor locations. nano3G is an end-to-end turnkey solution, including the following components (see Figure 1): A family of Access Points (APs), including the E16/24 picocell and the S8/16 office femtocell, which can be easily installed by end customers An Access Controller (AC), which handles and routes all traffic between the APs and the operators core network An OMC-R and AP Management Server (AMS), which provide all the facilities needed for operating and maintaining the APs and the AC.

Proven in the real-world

nano3G AC is built on ip.access Oyster 3G technology, which is field-proven in one of the worlds largest femtocell deployments. Used by Cisco within its end-toend femtocell solution, Oyster 3G is the basis of AT&Ts 3G MicroCell, deployed nationwide in the United States. Extensive real-world deployment experience and expert knowledge are particularly important in the design of Radio Resource Management algorithms that deliver reliable cell reselection, handover and access control with minimal impact on handset battery life.

AC Chassis
The AC is built on a telecoms standard ATCA chassis with builtin redundancy to allow the chassis to reach 99.999% availability, and is used in the AT&T deployment of 3G MicroCells.

AC Flexibility
The AC chassis is a multistandard chassis that is capable of supporting 2G (BSC), 3G (HNB-GW) and 4G (HeNB-GW) blades all running in a single unit. The blades may be mixed in proportion to give the desired performance for each technology.

AC reliability
The AC has redundant paths for all interfaces and has dual backplanes and data switches, ensuring continuous availability during a component failure. Dual PSUs and Quad Fan trays allow continuous operation during swap-out; these and failed processing blades can be replaced without interrupting service. Extensive testing and bedding-in in live operation, for more than a year, has produced significant benefits in improved reliability.

The 3G Access Controller

The AC acts as an aggregator of the traffic from the Access Points, mashalling and concentrating the data from up to 180,000 APs into a set of links to the Core Network. The AC connects to the core network using standard Iu-cs and Iu-ps IP interfaces over Ethernet. The APs connect to the AC over an Iuh IP backhaul link using industry standard femtocell security (IPsec).
