Episode 004 - Addictions with Menahal Begawala Guest Menahal Begawala a registered therapist and addiction counselor. Menahal Grew up in Queens New York she graduated from high school she went to al hood Institute in Karachi Pakistan and was taught by Dr. Farhat Hashmi She did her undergrad at NYU in general and special education she got a masters in literacy education, she went to study in Egypt and obtained ijaaza in Quranic recitation and tajweed. She then went back to school to for another Master's - this time in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She's been an active member of her community and regularly teaches classes on Islamic studies, conducting workshops on parenting, wellness, marriage and addictions. In this episode we cover: *Addiction and mental health *How to have a conversation with your children about types of addictions, the damage it can cause them, and how they can avoid it *Signs of addiction *The types of services available to families and people with addiction *What you should look for in an addiction counselor and clinic, and the signs of a shady counselor. Some of these points were really eye-opening for me. A lot of these are issues that our community is facing, but we are sometimes afraid or embarrassed to discuss them openly. It is important to also know the services and tools that our community needs in order to thrive mentally and emotionally.
