Tujuan facility layout untuk memaksimalkan: - utilisasi ruang, peralatan, dan tenaga kerja - efisiensi arus informasi, bahan baku, dan kerja karyawan. - Moral dan keselamatan kerja karyawan.
Hal hal yang perlu diketahui untuk menyusun layout yang baik: 1. Jenis produk 2. Urutan proses 3. Keseimbangan kapasitas antar mesin/bagian produksi dan kebutuhan ruang. 4. Pemilihan alat material handling yang tepat. 5. Keputusan yang berkaitan dengan estetika. 6. Pemahaman akan kebutuhan arus informasi. 7. Biaya penanganan bahan baku antar departemen.
Type layout
1. Fixed position layout
Layout yang didesain untuk pekerjaan yang bersifat proyek. Tipe ini akan membawa semua kebutuhan ke lokasi pembuatan produk, seperti bahan baku, tenaga kerja, mesin maupun alat produksi. Complicating factors mencakup limited space at site dan changing material needs.
2. Process layout
Layout yang didesain untuk pekerjaan yang membutuhkan ruang yang cukup luas untuk arus bahan baku, bahan setengah jadi, dan tenaga kerja saat memindahkan produk yang dihasilkan. Mesin-mesin peralatan yang memiliki fungsi sejenis ditempatkan pada area yang sama. Layout ini ditetapkan untuk proses produksi terputus-putus ( Process focus strategy) dengan variasi produk tinggi dengan jumlah produksi relatif rendah.

3. Office layout
Layout yang didesain untuk mengatur penempatan karyawan, alat bantu kerja, serta kebutuhan ruang agar memudahkan mengalirnya arus informasi.
4. Retail layout Layout yang didesain dengan tujuan memaksimalkan expose produk kepada konsumen.
5. Warehouse layout
Layout yang didesain untuk menyeimbangkan penggunaan ruang simpan dengan biaya penanganan produk.
6. Product layout
Layout yang didesain untuk dengan menempatkan mesin produksi di sekeliling produk yang dibuat. Layout ini ditetapkan untuk proses produksi terusmenerus (continuous process). Produk dibuat dengan special purpose mechine, variasi produk rendah dalam jumlah banyak, serta adanya keseragaman bahan baku dan kualitas produk akhir. Layout jenis ini terdiri dari: a. Kelebihan
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. variable cost per unit rendah. Biaya material handling rendah. Mengurangi persediaan work-in-process. Lebih mudah dalam melatih tenaga kerja. Menghasilkan produk dalam waktu singkat.
Kekurangan
1. Menghasilkan produk dalam jumlah banyak. 2. Terganggunya proses produksi di satu tahap tertentu mengakibatkan berhentinya seluruh rangkaian proses produksi. 3. Sulit untuk mengubah produk ataupun tingkat produksi.
Relayout
