The requirement of successful implementation of mass customization is discussed in the project .The various challenging issues in these areas have been investigated and methodology to resolve these issues are presented.

Mass Customization

Mass customization may be defined as producing goods and services to meet individual customers needs with near mass production efficiency. Production of personalized or custom-tailored goods or servicess to meet consumers diverse and changing needs at near mass production rates enabled by technologies such as computerization , product modularization, and lean production , it portends the ultimate stage in market segmentation where every customer can have exactly what he or she wants.

Higher Profits : By providing tailored products to meet particular needs, you make comparative shopping difficult and you shift the focus from price to benefits . This in turn will open your product to a wider market. Lower Costs : Mass customisation allows the ordinary man or women in the street to acquire a product that has been produced to meet their own particular needs yet at a competitive price - thus providing exceptional value for money.

Several elements have to work well - both individually and together to make mass customization a plausible business strategy. Mass customization actually requires unique operational capabilities. Current technology can support large-scale customization at reasonable prices with reasonable response times for only a few attributes of a few products.

Challenges in MC

Adaptable, integrated equipment, processes, and systems that can be readily reconfigured . Processes that minimize waste and energy consumption. System synthesis, modeling and simulation for all manufacturing operations . Technologies to convert information into knowledge for effective decision making. Product and process design methods that address a broad range of product requirements . Software for intelligent collaboration system .

Addressing The Challenges Through Advanced Manufacturing Technologies

AMT is application of computer technologies for business activity. It consists of CIM,FMS,CAE,CAPP,GT,JIT,CNC, DNC,AHMS

AMT is an integrated combination of processes ,machine systems, people, organisation structures, information flows, control systems and computers whose purpose is to achieve economic product manufacture. For successful implementation of MC strategy is to have totally integrated manufacturing organization.

Technologies enabling Mass Customization

Virtual Prototyping

The primary goal of Virtual prototyping for customized product development is to provide a multidisciplinary design definition and rapid prototyping environment for concept development and a tailored, scenario-based simulation environment for concept evaluation within a single facility. This design environment facilitates that capture and utilization of information generated during the design phase, and the simultaneous generation, at design time, of manufacturing, materials, costing, and scheduling data, together with visual evaluation of customer perception on target products, hence supporting the implementation of concurrent engineering.

Fuzzy logic is a form of many valued logic; it deals with reasoning that is approximate rather than fixed and exact. Fuzzy logic addresses such applications perfectly as it resembles human decision making with an ability to generate precise solutions from certain or approximate information.

Fuzzy Logic in Mass Customization

Iterative product configuration method applying fuzzy logic which is designed to improve product configuration by replacing features which are of less interest to the customer with features the customer prefers is necessary. Fuzzy preference relations are used to evaluate the various configurations through the iterative product configuration process. To measure the level of customer satisfaction for each configuration, a satisfaction rate is also proposed.

. A fuzzy inference model is employed to establish the relationship between customer needs and alternatives for a multi-functional product. Then a fuzzy synthetic distance method is used to perform optimal searching for possible alternative combinations in the product.

Intelligent Manufacturing Systems

. A system which improves productivity by systematizing the intellectual aspect involved in manufacturing, flexibility integrating the entire range of corporate activities - from order booking through design, production, and marketing - so as to foster the optimum in the relationship between men and intelligent machines.

IMS in Mass Customization

Manufacturing systems should be based in distributed and autonomous entities, being possible the addition of new components without stopping or restarting processes. All these facilities point to the concept of agile manufacturing systems. The approach is addressed to encourage the usage of multi-agent concepts in traditional production lines. A methodology that includes the technological migration from a established flexible manufacturing structure (FMS) to intelligent and reconfigurable manufacturing system(RMS).

Latest Concepts for successful implementation of MC

Different distributed manufacturing system (DMS) conceptsare being studied to cope with the growing costumers demands. They have the ability to answer quickly and correctly to changes of the environment, and they differ from conventional approaches because they can adapt to changes without external interventions.

Fractal Manufacturing System

This system can handle inflexibility or rigidity of organization. It is an open system. It comsists of small components called Fractal units. Each unit has certain features.

Features of FMS

Self organization-Each unit arranges its internal structure based on previously assigned criteria. Self Similarity-A fractal unit is similar to another externally but internal structure can be different

Self optimization-Continuous search for Best performance is strived .Fractals are used to achieve goals like product output capabilities. Eg-Unit has own resources and it effects into systems that provide data required to manufacture products and allocate operational resources. These characteristics make fractal units dynamic that make it possible to work with constant changes and react quickly to extrnal modifications.

Bionic Manufacturing System

It suggests that the structural and behaviourial observation in a living thing ,from cell level to bionical beings is also applied to enterprize. BMS makes parallelisms among these biological characteristics and essential needs for future production system In short production unit is compared to human cell

Holonic Manufacturing System

The word holon is a combination of holos (a greek word for whole) with the suffix on which, as in proton or neutron, suggests a particle or part. It describes the hybrid nature of subwholes/parts in real-life systems, that is holons simultaneously are self-contained wholes to their subordinated parts, and dependent parts to a larger whole that contains it.

This observation comes from analysing hierarchies and stable intermediate forms in living organisms and social organisations, and simply reinforces that although it is easy to identify sub-wholes or parts, wholes and parts in an absolute sense do not exist anywhere.
