Introduction
The heading of the project might have cleared the idea of the same

in your mind. If not take this below: Library with barcode technology have been implemented. Each book as well as a student details have been stored in the database. One just need to swap the book as well as his Id card in front of barcode scanner mounted in the library which is available to every one. Different settings like not more than 3 books in a week, penalty on submission of book after the due date etc can be done depending upon the use. This wont require manual power and would save the finance of the trust (most required) !!!!!

Planning of the project

Initially barcode scanner is to be developed. At first

the availability of basic components like battery gas gauge, PC card switch, CCD(Charged Coupled Device), LDOs and the basic PIC micro-controller are to be checked. Initial hardware and designing on the Printed Circuit Board are to be designed then. This total work is likely to be completed in 3.5 months. Programming of the IC is to be done in next 2 months.

The basic database is to be prepared in next one

month. This is what we are to do. Moreover parallely we are trying to get information about barcode generation circuit and if time and budget permits we will implement that too. Some future expansions like class attendance, tutorial submission can also be implemented just you need is the modification in database.

lets have the overview ........................

CCD(Charge Couple Device)

CCD is a sensor which is at the input side of the

barcode scanner. It will sense the barcode and produce an analog signal. Its working can be understood as: It uses a broad daylight source for illumination of image to be scanned. The barcodes will reflect the light which will be sensed by the sensor and equivalent signal can be obtained.

Continued.
There are two types of CCD.
1.Hand Hold Scanner 2.Fixed Mount Scanner

Hand Hold Scanner

As the name suggested it is the scanning hardware

device which we have to hold in hand. It uses LEDs for illumination. LEDs have better life time then the laser diodes. This are generally smaller, lighter and less expensive. It has rate of 45 scans per second or more.

Fixed Mount Scanner

As the name suggested it is the scanning device which

is fixed at a place. It also uses LEDs for illumination. It has more life time then any other lased diodes. This are generally Smaller and cheaper. The scanning rate is normally 500 scans per second or faster. The scanning rate is generally higher then hand hold scanner

ADC(Analog to Digital Converter)

The microcontroller understands the language of 1s

and 0s. Hence it is a necessity to convert the analog signal produced by the sensor into the digital language. The above aim is achieved by ADC.

Battery Management
It consists of sub blocks like:
Battery charger. Battery gas gauge.

Lithium-ion battery protector.

Battery gas gauge: Most of the battery management

contains only voltage measurement methods. This batteries compromises on accuracy by failing to account for elusive battery impedance.

Continued.
An alternative to voltage-based monitoring is to

measure coulomb in addition to voltage. Coulomb Charge, computed by integrating battery current over time, is a real representation of battery capacity. At the beginning of each discharge cycle, the coulomb counter remaining capacity is initialized to full capacity value if the charge termination is detected , and reset to zero when the battery reaches minimum voltage.

Continued.
Battery protector: Lithium-ion battery protectors are

fragile. Moreover to limit peak voltages we use battery protector. It also prevents battery from being discharged below a predefined voltage.

Power Management
It consists of sub blocks like:
DC/DC switching regulator. RF LDO.

PC card switch.
In some applications lot of LDO's are used under the

same power line , and require external capacitor to stabilize their operation. However LDO's sometime shows large power loss

Continued.
If one step down dc/dc converter which has large

enough current capacity is used and distribute the power with the load switches, the power loss can be reduced. The load switch itself cant regulate output voltage, but the drop out voltage is very small because of the low on resistance of internal transistor. The power loss of load switch is small and external capacitor are not necessary.

Output
The output side of scanner contain a computer or data

management device when we scan a id barcode it will open the student account. And after that when we scan book barcode the book will automatically issue in that students account. There is also a DAC ,amplifier and speaker that generate the sound which indicates that the barcode is successfully scan.

Future Expansions
We can attach a SMS module with our database so that

our system will remind the date of retuning of the book before a week to the student. We can also attach a portable scanning device such as PDA(Personal Data Assistant) with the system for instant scanning.
