What is a career?

Carrer is a sequence of positions/jobs held by a person during

the course of his working life The progress and actions taken by a person throughout a lifetime, especially those related to that person's occupations. A career is often composed of the jobs held, titles earned and work accomplished over a long period of time, rather than just referring to one position. According to Edward B. Flippo, a career is a sequence of separate but related work activities that provide continuity, order and meaning to a persons life.

The process of establishing career objectives and determining

appropriate educational and developmental programs to further develop the skills required to achieve short- or long-term career objectives. The major focus of career planning is on assisting the employees achieve a better match between personal goals and the opportunities that are realistically available in the organization. Career planning efforts need to pin-point and highlight those areas that offer psychological success instead of vertical growth Career planning is not an event or end in itself, but a continuous process of developing human resources for achieving optimum results. Individual and organizational careers are not separate and distinct, therefore, organization should help the employees in career planning

match an individuals needs, abilities and career goals with current and future opportunities in the organization It also includes learning new skills, and making improvements to help you in your career. Career development is an on going, lifelong process to help you learn and achieve more in your career. Career development encompasses acquiring of educational qualifications and certifications, career path, self-actualization as an individual, shifting of careers and career growth, learning curve, family life, accomplishments and recognitions or felicitations.
