WHAT IS DEVOTIONAL SERVICE?

This means ANYTHING that we do in accordance with the will of God. What do this mean?

Prayer: MEDITATION, SELF-INTROSPECTION. Congregational worship: YAJNA; ATTEND MANDIR Visit to sacred places Caring for all of creation Love for all living creatures Helping our fellow creatures Preparing Prasad Charitable work Even cleaning our Mandirs is devotional service. Etc.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF DEVOTIONAL SERVICE?

The benefits are multiple, however, most individuals see the purpose as MOKSHA. Moksha is the ultimate result, but there is no need to focus on Moksha, the focus should be on the devotional service This requires conditioning with the end result being a SOUL fixed in a steadfast manner to the ways recommended by the PARAMATMA. Helping our fellow living creatures, respect for the departed and caring for the environment encompasses the PANCHMAHA YAJNAS

DEVOTIONAL: AI MAALIK TERE BANDE

Atma Geet Bhajan 20, page 18.

MOKSHA IS A NATURAL PROCESS!

The acquisition of MOKSHA is a natural process. However, it has to be earned The rules for MOSKA is DEVOTIONAL SERVICE; this is very simple. DO NOT be concerned with ASTANGA YOGA to free the soul from the body attaining higher planets. The LORD will execute the transfer if you have earned it! Let us remember that everything around us is temporary and it is our responsibility to ourselves to secure our salvation

THE POETRY CAUTIONS US!

Atma Geet, Bhajan 13, pg. 12 Aaye bhee akelaa Jaaye bhee akelaa Do din kee zindagee hai Do din ka melaa

You came into this world alone and you will leave alone. Life is like a fair lasting for two days.

WHAT DO THE SCRIPTURES SAY?

Asurya naama te lokaa Andhena tamasaa vritaah Taan-te pretyaapi gach-chhanti Ye ke cha aatma-hano janaah Shukla Yajur Veda Sanhitaa; Isa Upanishad vs.3 This is the infallible Vedic Wisdom

People addicted to the sensual pleasures are engulfed in the darkness of ignorance. They deny the existence of both God and their own souls. After death, they go to those states of experience that are commensurate with their experiences.

Varaha Purana Nayaami paramam sthaanam Arcir-aadi-gatim vinaa Garuda-skandham aaropya Yatheccham anivaaritah The devotee does not need to perform advanced yoga and become experienced before his transfer to spiritual plane, he needs devotional attitude and the transfer is done by the Lord himself!

Bhagavad Gita, Ch.18,vs.66 Sarva dharmaan parityajya Maam ekam saranam vraja Aham tvaam sarva-paapebhyo Moksayisyaami maa saucah Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender to me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.

YAJNA AND COMMUNION WITH GOD AS DEVOTIONAL SERVICE.

Yajna: the word yajna is derived from the Sanskrit verb yaj, which has a three-fold meaning of worship of God (devapujana), unity (sagatikaraa) and charity (dna). An essential element is the sacrificial fire - the divine Agni- into which oblations are offerred. Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati elaborates this as all activities done in accordance with Vedic Injunctions whether spiritual, scientific or otherwise.

PANCHMAHA YAJNAS AS DEVOTIONAL SERVICE

There are 400 Yajnas described in the Vedas; only 21 are considered compulsory These compulsory yajnas are called NITYAKARMANAS. The other types are for particular desires and are called KAMYAKARMA. Because of the complex nature of these Yajnas and understanding the philosophy, the Taitterya Aryanyaka Upanishad has summarized all of our Lifes actions as a part of the PANCHMAHA YAJNA (Taitterya Aryanyaka ch.2: vs.10)

WHAT ARE THE PANCHMAHAYAJNAS

Rishi-yajna honouring RISHIS by the study of holy sciptures. Deva-yajna GOD by pouring oblations into the sacred fire. This is done during the twilight prayers SANDHYA, UPASANA, and AGNIHOTRA yajnas. Pitri-yajna offering ACKNOWLWDGEMENTS to ancestors or PITRS. Manushya-yajna CHARITABLE offerings of food to fellow humans. Bhuta-yajna feeding animals such as COWS

(means any domesticated animal).

WHICH IS MOST IMPORTANT?

All the Yajnas are important and thus should be properly performed We should strive daily to attain this objective This must be considered the sacred MOSKA DARSAN AND SUTRA ALL the Yajnas can be done as an individual without the need for lots of money or material possessions. We need to be steadfast in SHRADDHA (faith) and BHAKTI (Devotion) We must perform EESHWAR UPAASANAA and become a CONDITIONED SOUL.

EESHWAR UPAASANAA: COMMUNING WITH GOD; HOW IS THIS DONE?

Maitri Upanishad ch.4, vs. 4 Vidyayaa, tapasaa, chintayaa Ca Upalabh-yate brahma By knowledge, austerity (sacrifice) and meditation is GOD appreciated. IF we follow these guidelines then we will become conditioned souls and sin cannot touch us; eventually we rise beyond the temptation of sin.

SIN IS HARMLESS TO A TRUE HINDU!!!

Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, Canto 4, Ch. 4, Vs.24 Naianam paap-maa tarati Sarvam paap-maanam tarati Sin and evil does not overcome an advanced soul, in fact, he overcomes all tendencies to succumb to wrong-doings.

SUMMARY

Devotional service is any activity done in accordance with the Vedic Literature Any non-Vedic injunction is unacceptable and based on irrational concepts e.g. appearing naked before the Purohita so a special sacrifice can be done, Exorcism using unsanctioned methods. Etc Follow the PANCHMAHA YAJNA formula to mould our lives Follow the Maitri Upanishad model of Knowledge, sacrifice and prayer. Cultivate proper friends so our actions are those of proud Hindus. Remember MOKSHA is a natural process that is earned (Vedas, Purana, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita etc) Everything in life is transient(temporary), perform only positive action today as we may not see tomorrow. Congregational worship is a great method of conditioning yourself and acquiring the correct company.
