What is Plastic Memory

This memory is contains a plastic film. It is a technique that store a megabit of data in a millisquare device. It is 10 times denser than current magnetic memories. Plastic Memory has the potential to become the next generation of storage media. In the new plastic device, each cell measures 17 square microns.

Structure Of Plastic Memory

A two-terminal device in which an organic semiconducting polymer is sandwiched between two electrodes, indium doped tin oxide (ITO) and aluminum. The experimental devices contain two polymer layers. The first layer consist of PEDOT:PSS to which an inorganic salt (e.g. lithium triflate) and plasticizer (ethylene carbonate, EC) have been added. The second layer consists of poly(3hexylthiophene) (P3HT) doped with the plasticizer. Motion of the ions present in the device under influence of an electric field is expected to induce switching between a high and a low conduction state, the so called ON and OFF state of a memory device.

Spin Electronic Structure

It Uses Electron Spin to Read/Write Data
It is a thin strip of dark blue organic-based magnet layered with a metallic ferromagnet and connected to two electrical leads. The data is recorded & retrived from it by controlling the spins of the electrons with a magnetic field.

PEDOT
PEDOT is unusual plastic because it conducts electricity. It is used as a anti-static coating in photographic film. In new memory card, data in the form of ones and zeros would be represented by Polymer pixels.

How Read / Write Data

The fuse would be read To store the as a zero; while an information, higher unblown one that lets voltages at certain current passes through points in the circuit grid is read as a one. would blow PEDOT fuse at those points. As a result, data is permanently fetched in to the device.

Facts About Plastic Memory

Plastic memory is fast. Lab-built devices with a 1GB storage capacity have yielded read/write cycle times that are 10 times faster than CompactFlash, which are typically 2-10MB/s read, 1-4MB/s write.

It maintains memory even when the power is turned off. It has very low power consumption.
