EDITORIAL CARTOON

Is an illustration expressing opinion and interpretation.

Is one of the oldest and most notable items on the editorial page. The editorial cartoon, like the lead editorial, may also perform any of the three functions of the news press- to inform, influence, or entertain.

SUGGESTIONS FOR CARTOONING

If you decide to use a cartoon, make sure that it is done in good taste and that it should say something. Like an editorial, it should deal with only one topic. The purpose of a cartoon is to visualize an idea. Limit then, the use of words and labels. Unlike a picture in the news page, a cartoon does not need caption. Remember, a good cartoon, like a good picture, is worth ten thousand words.

You may use symbols like a dove for peace, a laurel leaf for victory or a heart for love. But be sure that the symbol is universal; i.e., it is easily understood even by an ordinary reader. Just like in news writing, cartoonize to express not to impress. The message is more important than the drawing. Be original. Dont plagiarize. Develop your own style. Cartoons like headlines and captions may also be the source of libel suits. The pictures in the bubbles may be funny, but they should not defame nor expose a person or object to hatred, ridicule or contemp.

Faces

Just as in life, where you watch a persons face for their response and mood, faces and heads are extremely important in cartoons and appear more than anything else when you are conveying a story. Even though in cartooning you can simplify or exaggerate to a great degree, it helps to get the basic shape and proportions right.

Hands

After the face hands re probably the most expressive part of the human anatomy. The face and one or both hands can often say a lot more than a whole figure.

Feet

Feet are notoriously difficult to draw; even rigorous figure artists may fudge on the issue. It is not always the actual structure of the foot itself that causes problems, but the need to show feet standing firmly on the ground, forming the contact point between the figure and its surroundings.

Figures

The human figure attracts the eye over and be any other subject in an image, because we naturally associate with the human element. So a quietly drawn figure doing nothing in the corner of your cartoon has the potential to become a focal point. Keep this in mind when you decide who should appear in your cartoon frame and what they are contributing.

Light and shade

You can use a variety of techniques for applying shading t your drawing, and the method you chose may depend on whether the cartoon is for reproduction and what are the limits of the reproduction process. With regard to the visual qualities of shading, and what it adds to your image, you need to think very carefully abut what function it serves, or whether you need it at all.

Stippling
Stippling is a form of non-directional shading, consisting f masses of small dots or similar marks. Stippling is an excellent method for imitating certain textures, but remember that you need to build up the forms as well, so take care not to stipple evenly all over the drawing.

CARICATURE

Is an exaggerated description generally by sketching. It is a pictorial representation of a person or an object in which the defects or peculiarities are exaggerated so as to produce a ludicrous effect.

This branch of cartooning is basically about drawing real people, though you can caricature a type. The viewer has to be given enough recognition factors to identify the person and understand the joke.

caricature

Caricature is possibly also the hardest cartoon type to master. It is not just a question of any old funny drawing of a famous face, but a matter of appropriateness, capturing a commonly held impressin of the person you are caricaturing.
